Beginning and Basic Sewing Course Syllabus

The class will cover: •What to look for in a pattern (as well as suggestions for easy modifications that you can make) •Which fabrics to look for, and how to prepare them •Hemming, tapering, and small alterations or repairs •Machine care and maintenance •Getting to know your machine •How to use different stitches and machine settings •How and when to use different types of thread and possibly more if time permits. Beginning and Basic Sewing Material List

1. Sewing machine (must be electric, in good repair, and be capable of a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, adjustable stitch length and width, and adjustable needle position.) Owners manual or user’s guide for machine is required. If you cannot find yours, contact the manufacturer or visit their website. Most all companies have these manuals available for free download or will happily mail you a hard copy. 2. Extra bobbins which fit your machine. 3. General purpose presser foot which fits your machine. 4. All purpose thread, any color. 5. 2 yards broadcloth, any color. 6. Scissors. 7. Quilting or sewing pins. 8. Measuring tape. 9. Washable marking pen or fabric pencil, or chalk. 10. Machine needles to fit your machine. Most come in multi-­‐size packages. Be sure you have at least 3 size 14 needles.
