COURSE SYLLABUS Course Title: Splash of Watercolor Instructional Goals and Purposes: The purpose of this course is to provide learners with skills, knowledge, and creativity to produce work in the watercolor medium. General Course Objectives: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of watercolor materials. 2. Demonstrate basic watercolor techniques and vocabulary. 3. Arrange and develop a watercolor composition. 4. To demonstrate an aesthetic judgment. 5. To critique their work. Specific Course Objectives: 1. Students will apply knowledge of watercolor materials-­‐paper, brushes, and other tools. 2. Students will demonstrate basic wash techniques-­‐flat and graded. 3. Students will create different values in the watercolor scale. 4. Students will use Visual Elements and Principles of Design to create a strong composition. 5. Students will demonstrate a wet-­‐in-­‐wet technique 6. Students will apply watercolor vocabulary. 7. Students will experience painting landscapes, buildings, still life, and flowers. 8. Students will show an aesthetic judgment in their work. 9. Students will create special effects such as dry-­‐brush, salting, scraping, scratching, spattering, and masking. 10. Students will use their photos to create a composition. Course Content: 1. Students will create a flat and a graded wash. 2. Students will create a value scale in black watercolor. 3. Students will create a still-­‐life. 4. Students will demonstrate a wet-­‐into-­‐wet technique in a painting of trees. 5. Students will create a landscape and sky-­‐scape. 6. Students will create a building. 7. Students will create an abstract. 8. Students will critique their work. Methods of instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, and Hands-­‐on. 501 505 8373 Paper : Arches Pad, 9x12, 140lb. cold press 12 sheets 4010-­‐608 ( not a watercolor paper block ) 4010-­‐609 Paints: Reeves Water Colour Set, 12 tubes, 12ml. Must be transparent watercolors. Or the Pelikan 12 pan set of TRANSPARENT watercolor paint. Palette: White dinner plate or white plastic plate or palette. Brushes: These are highly individualized tools and you will collect your assortment over the years. Your choices will depend on your style, size of work, and textural effects. To get started buy: a nylon watercolor, round # 8 . Robert Simmon. Eraser: Kneaded ( small) Support Board: Foam core board at least 10” by 13” and at least ½” thick. Pencil: 2 HB Container: plastic container 16oz. for clean water. Paper towel: one roll Sponge: small kitchen sponge Other: old tooth brush, salt, old credit card, a ruler and small spray bottle. Note: These are suggestions. I priced them at Hobby Lobby. If you want to buy more brushes get rounds #2 , #10 and a flat 1”. If you have items that are similar, do not feel the need to duplicate them. Bring what you have. The paper should be 140 lb. weight.
