PSEAD Publication Foreword I am pleased to present the remarkable 10 and 5 week Pre-‐sessional English for Art and Design course students’ publication celebrating the astounding achievements of the 60 UCA Pre-‐sessional English for Art and Design course students from China, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Latvia. In the publication, the students evidence how the PSEAD courses enabled them to experience the stimulating academic environment in preparation for their main UCA FE, BA and MA courses in the various UCA Schools starting in September 2014. Flicking through the pages, you will discover how the students built confidence as university creative arts students, faced the challenge of academia and made friends to better adapt to the new life in the UK. On the respective students’ pages, you will discover the learners found a new ‘student-‐centred’ approach, not only fascinating, but also challenging -‐ something that we, in the ‘West’, take for granted. The culturally diverse classrooms provided PSEAD staff with international experience of teaching English with a vast array of opportunities to promote critical thinking and intercultural communication. The techniques to stimulate intercultural interaction embedded in the PSEAD programme offered students a rich learning environment where students developed the necessary skills to communicate in the multicultural environment, as well as extended their appreciation of inclusive understanding of knowledge, particularly in art and design. I am certain the students are genuinely prepared for the challenges of the main courses as the sociocultural theories of learning. In particular, intercultural dialogue, which offers ‘building bridges across the multiple truths’, was deeply embedded in to the PSEAD programme to further advocate students’ ‘cultural capital’ to activate their ‘schemas’ to drive higher level of engagement in learning. In addition, the students had a lot of opportunities to familiarise themselves with their future courses’ requirements through being exposed to the course handbooks, course websites and dialogue with the heads of schools and course leaders. During the course, the learners had a chance to engage with critical discourse through lectures, subject-‐related TED talks and documentary screenings, workshops, seminars and tutorials. The stimulating field trips to London, Oxford and Brighton and visits to museums and galleries gave students inspiration for the various projects. The projects required the students to produce several academic essays as well as pieces of reflective and evaluative blog writing, prepare presentations and take part in seminars. In addition, the students engaged with the course through sketchbook, twitter (#ucapsead) and course research file, as well as had an opportunity to develop technical skills in Prezi, InDesign and Issuu. I strongly believe the PSEAD courses equipped the students with essential strategies to allow them to excel academically in the main UCA courses and there is no doubt we will soon hear of their successes – watch this space! The pre-sessional course taught us not only how to write essays but also communication, research and problem-solving skills. After some sessions, I finally realized I could speak English fluently not only in my room, but also with other people face to face. Regarding my work, if I want to turn a painting to a real picture, I will just do it without second thoughts.

If you listen too much, you won’t be able to create.

--Carine Roitfeld

I have always found it enjoyable when I had to use my talent to choose party outfits and official dinner dresses for friends, advise my brother on casual wear, or take my cousin shopping for the very first suit to celebrate my admission to the MA Fashion & Lifestyle Journalism. Gradually, these enjoyable times turned into a dream career related to planning and selecting merchandize out of the full set of seasonal collections of designers and putting up the whole display

My future life is full of challenges. If i want to become a qualified journalist, I will have to focus on my work without being distracted.

Three years ago I worked on one of my projects called ‘Smart Casual Mania’. I chose clothes and accessories at a reasonable cost for those teenagers who cannot afford luxury brand ones, but who still want to dress in a smart and charming way. So, I just put them together, like a puzzle, to create charming combinations.

THE LIFE STYLE

LIVING IN FARNHAM AND LIVING WITH

PSEAD COURSE Farnham Park / photo by Medea

MA Fashion

According to the living style of Farnham, it has become a characteristic location. In comparison with London city, we could obviously felt that most products are cheaper and lots of impatient people wre running aroud us. Nevertheless, messy circumstance and crowded traffic are compeletly opposite direction to Farnham life. Most of people who live and work in London are yuppies; they spend most of their time at work and earn money. I would say, London is a place which is convenient for business; and Farnham is a place which is for rest and joy. In summary, those things I am talking about are advantageous for forign students who came abroad for the first time.

I have been influenced by my grandmother’s passion for clothes as she was a tailor for 60 years. The reason I chose to study Fashion is not only because I could connect with her, but also because I am interested in the fashion trends. I wish I could be a professional fashion trend journalist in the future.

The Observation of UCA Farnham

Farnham in the UK is my first experience of living overseas. It has been a wonderful experience as forigner as me who came from compeletly different culture. It is a safe place with people who usually walk slowly and wear leisurely. When we went on the streets, most of people we could saw were seniors or families. They were kind to forigner students like us. They would give you a feeling just like grandparents who were so gentle and so nice speakers. Tutors told us that Farnham is a place which is one of the richest places in the UK. People live here with high quality living style and attitude. That’s a reason we could see lots of expensive cars here; and also a reason we could extremly felt the peacefulness and safety.

Evaluation of PSEAD As I came here to learn English, people here would patiently told us much information than we asked with slowly pronunciation and clearly voice. Because of their nice attitudes, I can be more confident to speak English to them. Moreover, because of a high level living quality, we could see easily from there wearing clothes; most of them are wearing simple style with confidence. They don’t care too much of fashion trends or popular styles. The only thing they do are showing their own style, and showing who they are. When we walked on the street, we could see most of restaurants and stores were decorated by flowers and adornments. This is a symbal that we could see how they prode with living here; and how they love and care this city as well. Not only those stylist stores, but also those clean streets and roads. Every time when the sun goes work, we could see lots of people over everywhere, but we won’t see any of litters here on the streets.

I have learnt professional academic writing and speaking skills in the PSEAD course, but what I think I developed most is speaking skills. What I also learnt from this course is keeping thingst simple. For example, the presentation should be clear and linear. Another thing that I really enjoyed were TED talks - according to TED talk speakers, we should give our presentation purpose and use body language to catch audience’s attention. Using voice’s tone makes the presentation more vivid.Time management and time keeping is also an ability to be a smart speaker. The interesting thing learnt in PSEAD was the fact I learnt from a variety of sources, such as tutors and peers as well as videos and films. In my opinion, practice before presentation is the most useful thing that not only smooths my speaking and thinking, but also builds up confidence. I definitely feel I am ready to ‘rock’ my MA Fashion with all these new skills.

I studied Pre-sessional English course in Farnham for 10 weeks - I loved it! It is a rich district with a lot of people paying attention to their appearance, very noble and elegant I think. I am fascinated by Farnham women wearing beautiful clothes, fine jewelry and flowery hats. All these make them look so fancy (and pretentious!)

Xiaojing-Wu Beijing, China Chinese, English Fine Arts School Affiliated to China Central Academy of Fine Arts BA Fashion Design

When I first saw a British woman wearing a magnificent hat for Ascot I was surprised, because I had never seen it in China. I think that even mature men also pay a lot of attention to their appearance in the UK.

Beverley Edmondson Millinery is a hat shop in Farnham - see below. Maison Michel is one of my favorite accessories brands, it is a under the Chanel’s brand. Maison Michel is, unlike the British style, simpler, and more concise design. Founded in 1936, the Parisian millionaire made beautifully constructed hats that were considered mature and whimsy. Now, the label is a long-term collaborator with Chanel, and its fanciful hats, from cat-ear headbands in petal-fine lace to elegant straw fedoras, are handmade in the Paris atelier under the watchful eye of Laetitia Crahay (michel-paris).

In China, most people prefer a style that does not make them stand out from the crowd, even wearing a hat can be trated as exaggeration. So, now that I am here, I am fascinated by hats! Hats from Chanel Croisiere (2011) Maison Michel Paris. At: http://www.michel-paris.com/studio.php?lg=en

In the ten weeks PESAD, I really learned a lot of knowledge, which is I had not learned, and I also had not contact with the domain of knowledge when I study in China. In the next three years, I will study undergraduate courses in the UK. I think it will be very helpful to my English improved, which is very good foundation for my future study and work.

5-week PSEAD course

When I was a kid no one predicted that I would be related to fashion but here I am - writing my own publication for the School of Fashion cover. I followed my dreams, I was not afraid to say my dreams out loud, although a lot of people tried to crush them but I proved them wrong and found myself sitting with other international students in the Pre-Sessional course.

These five weeks were like an exciting roller coaster. I caught myself experiencing different emotions; when I needed to write an essay I felt lazy, when we went on trips I felt curious, but in lectures I experienced all possible kinds of emotions.

The 5-week Pre-Sessional course was the best decision that I could make before my main course. In these few weeks I improved a lot more than I had excepted. Fashion is not only about clothes and glamorous magazine pages; it requires hard work where research skills and critical thinking are necessary tools. I was able to improve all these features and a lot more only in 5-weeks. However, the most important skill that these weeks taught me was to be autonomous. I know that in the following years independence will play a vital role both in my studies and professional development. Independent not only as a writer but as a researcher through books, journals, independent as a researcher through practical experiences. Of course, I improved my speaking, reading and writing skills, gained confidence doing presentations, improved my critical thinking and research skills. What is more, all these features went hand in hand with independence.

I know that my future is only in my own hands and I know that I can reach my dreams only if I work hard and have a right work attitude. I do believe that I can travel around the world and be part of famous fashion photo shoots, I do believe that my stylistic creations will appear in famous magazine pages and that some day I can be an inspirational person to other new enthusiasts, who will try to get into the fashion industry.

All I can say is that I am so thankful for this Pre-Sessional course because just in 5-weeks I learned a lot that will help me not only in my main course but in my whole life as well. Fashion is my passion and I am ready to do almost everything to connect my future with it. And it does not matter whether I need to write more essays or not, because thanks to this Pre-Sessional course I know how to do it correctly. I.

In here, the way of life and education widened my horizon and made me more logical when I think. I think I will use these skills in my future course deeply. Finally, I think it will be the most precious memory in my life.

MIND MAPPING Throughout these ten weeks pre-sessional English course, for my personal experience, I feel that the UCA education system is totally different from what I learned in China.

These two clothes were designed when I was a undergraduate student, photo patterns have been used.

PATTERNS IMPACT FASHION In PSEAD course, we have visited 4 aplaces, which are V&A Museum, Oxford Museums, Brighton Museum of Art & Gallery and Tate Modern Museum. Like the last picture shows. I learned a lot from these museums. Especially, I have learned the structure of amazing exhibitions and enjoyed the details from the long culture history. When I visited this museum, I paid more atterntion to the patterns, because I thought that I could collect the patterns from all the exhibitions for the basis of my future main course fashion design. This pattern was collected from the door exhibition, and I think it can be using to lace.

During the 5-week pre-sessional English course I learnt a lot. I remember when I first attended this course I was told that it was not only a course about improving English skills, but also preparing international students for their studies in their main course. The most interesting part was when we were told that ‘our common language is not only English, but also Art!’. From that moment, I felt I had already learned something really important in the university for the creative arts! I have learnt a lot though the PSEAD course and I really had so much fun during this period. I learned how to cooperate with my fellow students and improve my academic writing skills. For example, I learned how to use library sources and how to write references. I also learned to listen to other people’s opinions and improve myself in seminars. These things are really useful for my main course which is Fashion. In addition, I have made a lot of new friends and I had a very friendly tutor, Nikoleta, all

If I can make people like the things that I like, I will feel very successful and happy. To make my dream come true, I will work hard in the university, I will improve myself step by step and most importantly I will never give up! I believe my future will be bright and I am already working on it! After the 5-week pre-sessional English course, I will major in fashion at UCA. Fashion is a really important part in modern society. Being engaged in fashion was a well thought decision. My dream is to establish my own brand and make it popular

London is a bustling city, it is a trendy and stylish gathering place with a lot of art students, street artists, very different than Farnham.

Introduction I come from China, I studied pre-foundation in London and Foundation in Cambridge before, and i will study BA Fashion as a main course in Sept 2014. I will attempt to overview fashion styles in the three places in the UK I have lived in. Farnham is a town in Surrey, England, within the Borough of Waverley. The town is 34.5 miles (55.5 km) WSW of London in the extreme west of Surrey, adjacent to the border with Hampshire. Before I came to this city, I did some resserch about Farnham. I realised a lot of people in Farnham go shopping in charity shops where they can get pretty good deals on branded clothes.

About Future:

I want to find a balance between individual creativity and market demands when I proceed to my main course. To establish my own brand, I have to be creative, develop problem-solving skills and learn how to work both individually and cooperatively. I am convinced that I will achieve my goals after studying in the UCA.

After I finish my MA course, it is certainly that I want to pursue my own career. But before that, I plan to gather more experiences in the fashion industry. I want to work in different positions in fashion to get to know more about this field. I believe this will be a solid foundation for my next steps.

Career

I majored in Fashion Design to acquire professional skills about fashion. In my final project, called ‘Urban Structure’, I was inspired by the architecture of cosmopolitan cities around the world. I used black, white and silver to depict the freezing feeling of the modern city.

After I graduated, I worked in fashion companies for three years. That experience transformed myself from a school student into a professional designer.

We also visited some museums. It was a great chance for me to familiarize myself with the Western culture, and see various kinds of artworks. This has opened my mind regarding my design works, which will be helpful after my main course starts.

Nowadays the fashion industry is constantly expanding and many people work in it. Its basic staff is the designers. Designers are very important in a company, because they decide the clothes for the new seasons and work with the marketing team to complete a design. If you want to become a good designer you need to have inspiration. You can find inspiration everywhere.

For example, inspiration can come from the nature, building architecture even books and movies. We can go to museums to get inspired from other artists’ work.

Many young people are influenced by pop culture. More and more designers like using rock styles in their design. Street style is good for fashion design, too. Some pop stars like this kind of design.

I decided to attend the 5-week english language course before my main course in fashion to improve my academic skills. During this english language course I learnt a lot about essays, referencing, presentations, individual and group work. All these have prepared me for my BA in Fashion, during which I will learn more about fashion . After this BA course I want to work in the fashion industry as a designer.

Since I was a college student, I have always wanted to study abroad. The reason was because Europe has abundant fashion resources and contemporary thoughts, which are the issues I have always been concerned about. This is why my creations often criticized established aesthetics and viewed modern society with scepticism.

After completing my BA course in Visual Communications, I worked for approximately three years to save up for tuitions in order to study in the UK. This plan has finally been achieved over these past days. Before I came to the UCA, I supposed that the pre-sessional course might have been a simple language program. However, such impressive things have happened during these days that changed my perception for the following three reasons.

Firstly, through intensive training I developed my academic skills, and learned how to write references, something I had never done before. Secondly, there was an abundancy of art and design stimulations on our campus, practical courses and plenty of students with their creative mind got together. They could exchange their ideas or do collaborative work. The third benefit for us was studying in a multicultural environment in advance, thus we learned how to respect different cultures, because we might need to cooperate with students from various backgrounds in the future. Above all, I now know that I will not panic when my main course begins.

During this course, we also visited some places that inspired me about fashion promotion. Many famous brands use various ways to promote their image widely. For example, a DJ I met, was playing 80’s electronic music inside a well-known shop in London and interacting with customers. That was a creative commercial strategy and far more effective than recorded music. So, everybody indulged into this playful atmosphere. I hope I will explore more about such fascinating ideas in the future.

PSEAD

After the PSEAD course, I think I am a completely different person, because I have enhanced my personal experience and learnt a lot of valuable knowledge from this ten week course. The most interesting is the education system in UK which is really different from the Chinese one. First of all, I have leant many useful skills throughout these ten weeks, such as communication skills and academic skills. For example, we need to express our idea in a faster, simpler, more effective and convenient way. At the same time, when we make a presentation and transmit the idea to audiences, we need to use use body language, eye contact and human element to communicate with the audence and make sure they follow our content in order to understand it. So, communication skills are very significant for me to explain my idea in design with my teacher and share my views for classmates. Secondly, academic writing plays an important role in our study, because I need to produce academic work in university as an essential requirement, using many characteristics, explanations, examples and a list of works to produce work. At the same time, references are also very important details, through this course, I know how to find the right evidence and how to write references in the right way and the most useful thing is how to use academic writing skill. To sum up, during the pre-sessional course, I feel that I have improved a lot. I have become more independent than before and my horizons have been brodaned. In addition, I have gained essential communication skills, so I believe I can manage my main course and make a good quality essay and report. The most important is that I really enjoy my life in this course. Moreover, pre-sessional course is like an effective tool to help reduce the difficult way to enter the main course, and I can use the skills that I have learnt from this course in my future study.

I think that London is the most amazing city in the world. Red color is the symbol of the city. There, you can feel very enthusiastic, happy and be spellbound by the diverse culture. When we went to V&A Museum and Tate Modern, there were a lot of amazing exhibitions. Through analysis of different colors, cutting techniques and styles in one of the exhibitions, I found out a lot of valuable and relevant information for my main course.

Brighton BLUE and WHITE are the main colors that I associate with Brighton. I think people in Brighton are quite relaxed and there is a laid-back atmosphere, mainly due to the fcat it is by the sea but also Brighton culture. When you walk alongside the beach, you will feel great and forget about all your troubles!

Oxford We also went to Oxford where we visited The Ashmolean Museum, The Pitt Rivers Museum and MOMA Oxford which was my absolute favourite with Barbara Kruger’s work was exhibited - I was impressed with thw way she used the gallery space to communicate her thoughts about feminism through graphic design - wow!

Graduated from Shih Chien University in Taiwan, majored in Fashion Design and now is going to study MA Fashion Promotion and Imaging in UCA.

When I decided to study aboard, I had to choose which country to study in. Then I soon made the decision to come to the UK, because its capital, London, is a modern city with a mature fashion

industry. Moreover, it is part of Europe, thus close to all the avant-garde fashion countries. Therefore, I can be closer to their fashion industry and travelling to these countries is easier. I majored in Fashion Design. I acquired some professional skills about fashion such as makeup design, hairstyling, pattern drafting and fashion editing. In my graduation project, I got inspiration from flowers and women, because I believe that different flowers have their unique characteristics and so do women. Because the Master course lasts only one year, I wanted to stay in the UK as long as possible, so I bought the earliest fly ticket to London for thePre-Sessional English course for Art and Design (PSEAD) and here my new life began! In the begin-

ning, I thought that the Pre-Sessional course would only focus on improving our English skills, but I was surprised when I realised that it is also very closely related to creative arts. Most importantly our tutor was always willing to give us more and more tasks :) During the Pre-Sessional course, we learned to write academic essays, prepared presentations and publications, and we also went on trips. These useful skills will not only remarkably help me in my main course but also in my future works. I am still in search of my future career and plans, so I hope everything will become clearer to me soon. Anyway, I am actually enjoying this self-exploration trip.

I like fashion since I was child and, I learned the textiles and clothing at the University of Japan. But somehow I thought it was not enough and I could not see the future, so I decided to come here to study more creative things I want to deepen the learning while being stimulated to unique and original fashion people of the UK.

Farnham Farnham is not a big town, but the atmosphere is good, also people who live in here are kind and is a suitable environment to study. It might be boring for students of fashion majors, but there are a few small secondhand clothes store and clothing stores, and charity shops in the town, it was interesting for me because I like old things. Charity shops are not common in Japan, but there is a habit to enjoy shopping in the charity shop on a daily basis in the United Kingdom. The charity shop, in short, is a secondhand shop, but some percentage of customers pay is contributed. It is a shop that has local atmosphere and they sell dishes and daily necessities and record apart from clothes. There is a chance that you can get cheap bargains here.

PSEAD project trip Ă— Fashion There were four trips which were to inspire the different projects in this course. It was a very good experience to be able to go to various locations as part of the class. On trips, I felt that the modern and classic architecture styles were mixed. Also, I realized again that UK is a country that loves the old stuff. As an example, various antique markets are being held in London. I visited the Old Spital Fields market. Shopping in a place where many things come together was like a treasure hunt. I also saw a lot of vintage shops in a Brighton trip. Of course, latest clothes are nice but clothes that capture history can be also also attractive. History and trends of the past are important to learn fashion. Through this course, I reassured that studying fashion in this country will enable me to learne about the merger of the old and the new.

l enjoyed the PSEAD course as it used social media in learning, took advantage of the sketchbook and it all seemed new to me. I was hesitant to at first, but I felt that it was necessary in order to study the art learning and academic in the main course in the future. If I participated in the main course from September without taking this course, I would start learning while facing a variety of problems and unknown points. I thought it was the right choice for foreign students to start with studying the PSEAD course being unfamiliar to the environment and learning system of this country. I could reseach things that were relevant to my main course in the project trips, because I could choose my theme in each project. I feel I am ready to start studying my main course, Fashion Promotion & Imaging beginning in September.

I think fashion is not just for people who like luxury, but also for ordinary people. I chose to study Fashion Promotion and Imaging to find the most cost-effective way of selling valuables. While studying the PSEAD course in Farnham, I passed by Goldsmiths shop very often. The wide choice of both, luxury and ordinary brands really struck me and I thought the shop could be accessible by various clients. Goldsmiths is a business with more than 230 years of tradition and experience (goldsmiths, 2014). The first showroom opened in Newcastle in 1778, and it’s still trading today on the very same site. There have been many notable achievements for Goldsmiths.

Today, Goldsmiths is the largest quality jeweller in the UK with over 100 showrooms in every major town and city from Aberdeen to Torquay, as well as five in Northern Ireland. Each offers the high street's finest selection of premier and designer watch brands, and gold and diamond jewellery. I think the pre-sessional course was not like a general language school, because I learned a lot of things to help me prepare for my main course in September. I am not afraid of academic writing anymore and I know how to write it perfectly. I now know how to structure a presentation and let everyone know the key point which I want to express. I will read more articles in English to learn new vocabulary and I will keep up with the speed of the film subtitles. One of the things that I most enjoyed while on PSEAD was making new friends from different countries. Because of the inherent unfairness, the reality we must work harder. Be brave to face challenges, not escape it. I am not like the general student still unknown for their future. I have a strong background and also I knew my mission, I have learned the most things in the shortest time, and then returned my home to help our family business: Weddings dress company. I have to work harder than others. I am ready to face my main course of the Fashion promotion and imaging. References: Goldsmiths, www.goldsmiths.co.uk, accessed on 20 August 2014

BA Fashion Design, IFA Paris

I want my fashion brand to be profitable and influential. Good design is the foundation. I realise it is significant to make a clothing brand in the ever-changing fashion world to survive and develop, my brand must be unique and excellent.

MA Fashion Management & Marketing

I come from Shanghai in China. I majored in Fashion Design on the IFA Paris, and studied makeup and photography there. I love fashion. I founded my own brand with my friends. I found myself more interested in fashion management and retail, and I feel I need to deepen my knowledge about fashion management and marketing.

This is one of my most satisfying designs at university. I tend to use black and white and gray colours as well as few prints. In my styIe, I want to use simplicity and tough futuristic silhouette.

After I graduated from the college, I worked for the fast fashion brand H&M Visual Merchandiser in Shanghai. But I wanted to establish my own independent designer brand and I began brainstoming ideas for it with my friends. The brand name is “TRIANGLE”. The brand’s style is simplicity and pure classic form. We have created the brand website, entered the physical stores and online stores as well.

When I first came to Farnham UK, I was attracted to many boutique shops, one of the most favorite ones is Whistles. The brand is a local brand. Its quality fabrics, the design is simple and practical and generous. Store display is also very simple and clean, the brand is black lettering on white background. This brand is greatly favoured by the British Princess Kate. She had attended the Olympics and other important occasions wearing Whistles clothes. The visibility of Whistels in the UK is quite high. And the brand is expanding sale channels. On the other hand, I found that British brands have tendency to sell tradtionally - in phisical stores, but they recently began to focus on the online sale, and website information is updated quickly, beautifully designed.

ABOUT ME

Studying in London

I studied in London at a language school last year for a few months. I did gradually improve my English and realized how massive and fantastic UK is. London is one of the most cosmopolitan city in the world, and it is just as romantic as a poem, as beautiful as a painting. I visited some famous spots such as The House of Parliament, the British Museum, and the South Bank as well as the highest building in Europe “Shard”.

Except for learning in a classroom, we still went outdoors to explore our new environment. We visited the Farnham Museum and Castle. The landscape and architecture here are different from those in London. As a result, I was exposed to two different perspectives, and all the things I observed could be considered as the beauty of art. However, fashion is also art, as it is an expression of both beauty and humanity. In addition, we also toured to Brighton, where I drew in my sketchbook what I saw.

Background

During my undergraduate studies, I worked parttime for a well-known women’s apparel company. I acquired marketing skills like store decoration, arrangement of product layout, and how to sell products to attract customers. I was even modelling for an event at this shop as a way of promoting our clothes. I cherished this experience, and I am pleased that my endeavors and persistence won my customers’ and employer’s recognition. However, what touched me the most was the feedback I received from customers.

In Future

Pre-sessional Course

In these five weeks, I have learned many useful research skills that I will need to apply into my future main course. Drawing a mind-map is also very helpful for organising my thoughts. Additionally, I familiarised myself with the TED talks, which facilitated me to perfect my oral presentations.

In the future, I want to work in my father’s business, which is a brand imported from Europe. Before I came here, I had a chance to work there. This experience made me realise that Fashion is actually a “concept” that I can insert into any industry. After the connection between my father’s business and fashion, I hope I will be able to insert fashion as an element in that brand. I am convinced that I will enhance my marketing skills through my MA, which will be my best guide in my new adventure.

Yang Wu Country: Chian University: South China Agriculture University

Through the pre-sessional English course, I acquired new skills and enhanced my abilities, such as academic writing and presentation skills. work I also learned how to both independently and as member of a group.

Main Course: MA Fahion Management & Marketing I studied economics and management and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Management. It was the time after I saw the movie “The Devil Wears Prada that I generated the first wish to become a fashion magazine editor. Being a freshman, I joined the Han Dynasty Garment Association, whose members explored the ancient Chinese traditional clothing the Han Dynasty Garments- to understand their history of development and designs. My department was in charge of the product design and the procedure of how to make the garments. I also made clothes with my own hands. From this project, I gained a lot of knowledge, which aroused my great interest in the fashion garment industry. So I choose the MA in Fashion Management & Marketing to enhance my knowledge and broaden my horizon.

About Myself

PSEAD

Course As far as I am concerned, it is necessary to attend a presessional course. International students need this adjustment period before moving to their main course, because the acquired skills will help them adapt to studying abroad better.

Main Course During my main course, I will learn a lot abou t fashion management, branding, public relations, marketing and marketing strategy formulation. So, I hope that after I graduate from the UCA I will be well-qualified to work in the fashion industry.

When I wrote my academic essay during the presessional course, I searched many books, and I acquired a variety of knowledge about my future course. Therefore, I am interested in the work of fashion marketing and public relations.

e r u t Fu

Being influenced by the movie and the books, I hope that in the future I will become a Fashion Public Relations Manager or work for a magazine publication company related to fashion. I think my main course will facilitate me to achieve my goals.

ABOUT ME Background

I worked in the marketing and planning sector at a large-scale fashion department store in my country for six years, where I developed a strong passion for the fashion industry. However, I decided to attend an MA in Fashion Management & Marketing in UCA, because I had no academic background in fashion-related subjects and I wanted to strengthen my English abilities at the same time. However, without a direct Englishspeaking environment, it was difficult to improve my English effectively. Thus, the school offered a 5-week pre-sessional English course (PSEAD course) to prepare students for their future studies.course) let us learn

PSEAD course in UCA

The PSEAD course enabled me to adapt not only to the learning but also to the living environment in advance, emphasizing academic writing skills. Following the course step by step truly helped me a lot. Firstly, the course aimed at providing an effective way of teaching academic writing skills, so that we are well-prepared for our future dissertation. Lacking these skills is undoubtedly a big obstacle towards the completion of our main studies. Secondly, the PSEAD course emphasized on inspiring students’ critical thinking, because we had to make a statement

and talk about our views on certain subject during class. I came to realize that the teaching method i n the western countries was totally different from that of the eastern countries, because the main purpose of education here is not to train students like robots.

My Future I had already set my mind on the relationship between the brand and the mass media. How to become an effective medium between the brand and the media and how to develop a creative marketing strategy through media are what I eager to learn.

For me, fashion is a means of communication and connection bet ween the most creative designers and a market which values people’s appearances and personalities.

Background I majored in International Business. In the Marketing course, I learned about ‘Classical Conditioning’, which inspired my interest in marketing. As a result, combining my interest in marketing and fashion, I decided to undertake an MA in Fashion Management and Marketing.

Pre-Sessional English Course Before the beginning of my main course, I attended the pre-sessional English course.

First, the pre-sessional English course made me get used to the new life in the U.K. that is quite different from that in Taiwan. Moreover, with my tutor’s encouragement, I became much more confident in expressing my opinions in front of my classmates. Second, I learned how to write references and bibliography. With the tutor teaching step by step, and the experience of writing an essay, I clearly understood how to write references and bibliography. Third, presentations will be a very important part in my future. With the help of my tutor, I have learned how to prepare and perform presentations effectively.

Finally, visiting museums was not only a wonderful opportunity to visit other cities, but also helped me gain deeper insights into art and cultivate my sense of arts, because my BA was not art-related.

Future Having attended this course, I believe that I may be ahead of my future fellow students who did not attend the pre-sessional course. Hopefully, a bright future in the Fashion Industry will be awaiting me after my graduation! I will work hard to make it!

As you know, this is a cool place that gathers young artists and designers together. Here is a university for the odd, strange and also creative pupils.

2. Sheep Farm

Behind the students’ accommodations, it has a big sheep farm that you can walk around. Some nights, you might hear the sound of sheep and you cannot sleep because of its. Joking, some students said they want to kill that sheep! However, actually, it is not too bad like that; it means you are so close with the nature and it is a good to relax after work with cute animals and nice farm landscape.

3. Waitrose

Waitrose is the closest supermarket for UCA Farnham students. It is very convenient to take only 5 minutes walk from school. Generally, Waitrose gives an illusion of superior quality. The prices of products are expensive in comparison with the others: Sainbury’s and Lidl. The qualitative of convenience foods such as sandwiches, soups, and ready meals is very nice. We recommend this supermarket if you want to buy foods with best quality, but it is quite too expensive for students.

4. William Cobbett

We found this fabulous place while we played a Treasure Hunt! Situated between the town centre and the railway station, this popular pub has a wonderfully dark interior with a number of drinking areas and a large outside area.

In the PSEAD course, one of the biggest problems is the interpersonal relationships. We all arrived at UCA which is a new environment. We all come from different countries and speak different languages so we must communicate with English which is very difficult for us because our English is not very good. At the beginning, we were all strangers to each others, so getting along together was very embarrassing. We did not know how to deal with interpersonal relationships. Party is a good way to meet each other and get to know everyone. At first, we had a small party with our roommates. Later, parties became bigger and all the PSEAD course’s students partied together. Each one of us had to prepare a special dish from our own country; we had dishes from China, Ta i w a n , Thailand, Japan and S o u t h Korea. We gathered

in a dormitory, with music and interesting games while we were enjoying food from different countries. Then we began to exchange our Facebook accounts and telephone numbers. Soon, we become familiar to each other and we started to feel that the language barrier was not a problem for us anymore. Everyone loved the party. It brought us loads of fun in the PSEAD course, it made our boring students lifes wonderful. We met a lot of new friends from different countries. At the beginning,we all felt that the PSEAD course goal was not only to help us with the main course we are going to study, but also to help us to adapt faster to the students life in the UK.

Background Nowadays, more and more students choose to study in the UK, and increasingly, they choose to study art at the UCA. I was one of them. However, the English level and the ability to adapt to the learning context of these students are different. Therefore, UCA opened a Pre-sessional English course for Art and Design to help student tackle this situation. The PSEAD course supports English language development and prepares students for their main course. It can help them to improve vocabulary and academic English skills.

Critical Thinking First of all, you have to learn to use critical thinking. Critical thinking is the study of clear and unclear thinking. It is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conception, applying, analyzing, and evaluating information. Because everything has a good side and bad side, i.e. a positive side and a negative side. Independent Study Secondly, we have to learn about independent study which is a very important ability to enhance self-learning, because there is not a fixed way of education. This allows us to better express our own learning ability and permits us to have more creativity. On reflection, the experience from independent learning makes me realize that education does not need to stop when the student leaves the class. Academic Writing The academic writing is one of the major subjects in the PSEAD course. ‘Academic writing is a social practice, and you always write with a purpose: to explain, to persuade etc.’ It is very good to try your best to be skillful on academic writing. The main reason is that in MA courses in the UK we need to write a lot of academic essays, and they are very different from the Chinese essays. In my opinion, if you want to write a good essay, it is important and helpful to implement a well structured planning. As a consequence, we do not have to be afraid of

event. After 5 weeks, we were ready to greet the new students here. So the welcome event was hold for new coursemates’ coming with a feast. Students socialised, exchanged ideas and their experiences.. We spent the whole afternoon making new friends. Friends are key

points in a learning life because people they inspire each other with cooperation. Another aspect of the course, the cinema afternoon research was an interesting way to be absorbed by students as well. Watching a film is a perfect form of teaching language. I think imitation is the key point of the way of learning because people learned things through our eyes and ears. Film is mixedㄇㄒ with sounds and images so we memorize them after our organs received resourc-

e s . Even cinema sessions is a kind of entertainment but it could be a perfect way of learning.

“If you mix two or three or more kind of life, you are the one. Be One, be unique one.”

Lecture

YU-Hung Kuo

that is why we can use mind maps to help us to take notes effectively.

Taiwan BA Culture Heritage Conservation 10 weeks PSEAD MA Product Design

I am pround that I attended this 10-week pre-sessional course, it not only prepared me for my main course, but also allowed me to experience UK life.

Target Introduce My name is Kuo Yu Hung, I am a student of product design. I did not achieve the IELTS’s score required for UCA, so, I had to join this course. But thinking about this course more, studying on the pre-sessional course not only improved my English skills, but also familiarized me with the educational environment in England. There are some parts of the course, which are different from studying in my country, especially, ‘lectures’.

Discuss

The important thing about lectures is that the lecturers can teach a lot of students in the same classroom, at the same time. In additional, different lecturers have different styles of delivery, for example, Mary-Lou, who was a lecturer on the course, talked about creativity. I think that the reason why she chose this kind of materials is that most of the students here belong to design areas and we need something to inspire our creative ideas. In order to ensure students participate and focus on the lecture, our tutors asked us to take notes by ‘mind mapping’, I think that some complicated words can be replaced by simple images,

I learned a lot from this course through a variety of different methods of learning, and I also believe that the things we learned can help us to our main course. I hope I can keep learning and be inspired with new ideas to add to my creativity. For me, I am in a new environment and I should experience it as well as possible.

Trip

Tokuda Kanako Japan BA Interior Design MA Design 5 weeks PSEAD

For example, in Brighton, I saw a lot of famous furniture in Brighton Museum!I was so pleased I shared each opinion with my friends through the trip! And I felt I could learn to English as well while discussing!

When I was at university, I learned many things that related to space, interior, and furnituredesign. And after finishing my BA, I decided I would like to study furniture design and installation design at MA level. So I chose to study ‘MA Design’.

Future

Anyway, I’m living in the UK. It means I can learn art and design because there are many chances to absorb knowledge and have new experiences and will influence my design work.In the future, I would like to work in the UK as designer. This course has been a great experience and opportunity for me.

Background My major is ‘Interior Design’! When I was at university, I learned many things that related to space, interior, and furniture design. And after finishing my BA, I decided I would like to study furniture design and installation design at MA level. So I chose to study ‘MA Design’.‘Trip to Brighton’ and ‘Trip to London’ were part of the PSEAD projects. The purpose of the trips to Brighton and London were to seek out things related to art and design especially related to our main courses. In these towns, there were many museum and shop related to my major.

‘Trip hammer’ by Richard Serra in Tate Modern

Classic furniture collection in Brighton museum It was quite exciting to see the sculptures in Tate Modern, London. The sculpture, ‘Trip hammer’, by Richard Serra was quite interesting for me, His work inspired me.I have seen this work on the Internet, But seeing it directly was much more attractive than just seeing some images.I hope it will be inspiration for me in the future.

Documentation

Tami Ishida Japan BA Glass 10 weeks PSEAD MA Glass

PSEAD course will be useful for my main course and my future career as an artist!

Discuss

In PSEAD 10 week course, I learnt a lot of skills that I need for my main course. The skills were not only academic skills such as writing or reading but also how to organize my imagination and ideas such as mind mapping, experiments and documentation. In my case, particularly experiments and documentation were very important skills that can organize and show my ideas and process of my work. I had experience as a freelance glass artist in my country, but I have lacked these skills. Therefore, these skills enabled me to show my ideas in the form of visual information. In many cases, showing information in this way is very effective as it can be understood easily and it is more interesting visually. Therefore, these skills will be useful for my main course, MA Glass, and my future career as an artist.

In addition, the London trip inspired me. I visited several markets in London to see contemporary crafts. In Spitalfields Market, I could see some crafts made by local people. The atmosphere of the marketplace was really lively and friendly, and crowded. In this place, people can communicate face-to-face and negotiate with artist about their work. Artist can also advertise directly to customer. In that case, documentation about the work would be useful to show the process and explain the idea. Therefore, I was really impressed with the energetic atmosphere in this market and the opportunity to communicate between people and artists.

Finally This summer, I leaned and experience a lot through this PSEAD course, and I believe that they will help me to improve in my future.

Mapping

Saki Yokota Japan BA Industrial Design 10 weeks PSEAD MA Product Design

To study here was a precious opportunity for me to learn about the education system and lifestyle in the UK. Making new friends pushes me further to learn English, because I want to communicate with them!

I learned ‘mapping’ in the first week of the 10 week Pre-sessional English and Design course. Mapping, or mind mapping, is a creative way to make ideas visible by writing key words on the paper. The importance of mapping is that it is not enumerations of short sentences. Mapping is applied to creative design processes too. Mind mapping is effective for product designers to solve the problems and to make decisions in working processes. I think it is important for designers to grasp their own opinions and positions. To draw a mind map makes my idea clear, and it leads me to the direction that I should go ahead through. In my experience, product designers have to grasp all necessary conditions of products when they start to design.

I felt improving my mapping skills profits me in my career as a product designer. When you explain something to other people, explanation by simple images and keywords is easier to understand than by mouth and long sentences. Mind map is an effective way to communicate my ideas to others. Moreover I found that there are beautiful maps like art works. I was impressed by them. I have not learned mapping skills to develop my ideas enough yet. But I am interested in mapping itself. My goal is not only developing skills to produce functional maps but also making beautiful maps.

Mapping of 30 years of my favorite things. During this course, I wrote mind maps five times to explore my interests about product design. I can choose key words, but I am not able to connect these words together through their relations. My map was still only putting keywords, and it needed to become more effective and creative. After I rewrote it again, I found that the map and my brain became clear and more specific. I think mapping is a useful tool to know my potential interests and where they can lead me.

Cinema

Meng Wang

China BA Accessory Design 10 weeks PSEAD MA Contemporary Jewellery Design

But during this course it helped create purpose to films and helped inspire ideas. For example, the films: ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘CoCo Chanel’ are different films but they introduced me to a certain era of fashion.

10 weeks pre-sessional course is very funny and interesting, and it very important in my future study.

Films can bring people colourful scenes, visual spectacle, real emotion and inspire ideas. Through films we can understand things like peoples lifestyle and clothing style. Music is also used to show different emotions. It was a very interesting and usefully part of the course. In the past, when I watched films in the cinema I did not ask questions and think about the context of the film or how it relates to my main course, I just appreciated the story and image and did not look deeply into theses things.

In the films women’s style of dress changed from formal and proper to free and spirited. The actresses in the films wore cloche hats, art deco jewellery, beaded headbands, had bobbed hair, and held long stem cigarette holder. Their fashion style represented their social status. The transitional shoes become freer with low-heeled shoes. It is interesting that the bob cut and the cloche hat, are still very popular in contemporary fashion, this made me consider how design and social life are connected due to film.

From this course, I discovered that the flapper style challenged and redefined women’s roles and was an important turning point in history. I know some students did not like this film and thought it was very boring and slept in the cinema. However I enjoyed the films and felt that through the films’ music and picture, you could feel emotions, like danger, happiness and sadness, and it inspired my idea of design. At last, I want to say that I enjoyed the films, and you will find more fun things to do in the cinema!

Sketchbook

Yu-Wen Chen Taiwan BA Product Design 10 weeks PSEAD MA Product Design

'Sketchbook changed my life', I started to use my hand to record my life.

While studying on the ten week Presessional English for Art and Design course, l learned many things. l am going to talk about one of the key points that affected my vision, awareness and visual impression.

The most interesting part of the course was the sketchbook; this was used for creative expression. During classes, lectures and trips everyone was using their sketchbooks, we were sketching, sticking photos and making mind maps. Most of the pages in my sketchbook do not have any words on them. This is a very new experience to me, before l used to use the sketchbook for my main course in university; l had never used the sketchbook like now for every day life.

“Sketchbook changed my life I started to use my hand to record my life, it has helped me see things l did not notice before. Now I can use this to look at people's work. Before I looked at things using my eyes, I did not think what the designer and artist want to produce. It is interesting to notice that when I photograph and draw the same thing the sketch and photo show different feelings to people. On the other hand, in the begging when I started to draw in the sketchbook I thought it was a waste of time.

Nowadays, mobile phones are very convenient; you can use them to take photos without any other tool. But, I found the problem was, you see something beautiful, so you take a photo, but a few days later when you see the photo again the feelings you felt at the time have been lost. A photo will not retain the feelings in the same way as a hand sketch.

Presentation

Ling Bao China BA Art Design 10 weeks PSEAD MA Ceramic Arts

The PSEAD not only improved our English language skills, but also helped us prepare in every way for our main courses.

Discuss Background Before I came to UCA, I choose to take part in the 10 week Pre-Sessional English language course. At the time, I just wanted to use these ten weeks to improve my ability to live and study better in the UK. When I took the course I found it was different to what I expected. At first, Teachers taught us different methods of learning, and we had a varied programme, such as trips, group discussions, use of sketchbooks, drawing mind-maps, presentations, tutorials, lectures etc. Through these we found ways to improve our English language and learning skills.

From the different things we did on the course I liked presentations the most. We had five minutes for each of our presentations to share our experiences. We spoke about what we felt was interesting during our journeys and at the end of the presentation the group asked questions. At last, each group chose a student to present in front of all the other groups. It not only improved our spoken English ability but also improved our power of expression, many students in the beginning were unable to present and read directly from their notebooks, but after a lot of practice they began to improve their speaking skills. I think this is very useful for us in the future.

Future I believe in the future I will still use the experience from this course to help me learn. I hope after the ten weeks, we can look forward to our main courses. I like pottery, so I hope I can use the knowledge that I learned in UCA to enhance my design of ceramics. I also hope the one year I will spend in UCA is unforgettable.

TED Talk

China BA Process and Identification of Jewelry 10 weeks PSEAD MA Contemporary Jewellery Design

Listening skills are the most essential part of what I learnt from TED.

Background I received my bachelor degree after my graduation in June 2013. In the past 4 years I spent most of my time studying jewellery design. And worked as a designer from 2012 to 2013.

TED Lectures Showed me a different learning system. ‘I'm not a smart man, but I work hard’, It has given me a new insight and I know more about different cultures, Practiced my listening skills: the TED Talks are available so you can listen a few times or whenever you want. I will study my main course in Rochester. In Farnham, I experienced many things from this short program about the UK lifestyle and education. The most meaningful aspect of the pre-sessional English course is independent learning, which is a method and philosophy of education that a student acquires knowledge by his or her own efforts and develops the ability for inquiry and critical evaluation. This approach also gave me the opportunity to collect information by researching. I have improved my research and time management skills. And we had study time for group discussion, so I have learned not only how to learn independently, but also learned how to complete a task with peers.

Finally I am very happy to have studied on the pre-sessional English course. Thank you to all the teachers and students.

Reflective Writing

Mengyan Chen China BA Industrial Design 5 weeks PSEAD MA Product Design

How wonderful the PSEAD course was! New life, new friends, useful classes and exciting trips. Everyday here is challenging and creating fun.

Introduce

In essence, the PSEAD is an English course, so it was inevitable that we had writing work such as essays and reflective writing. Because whether we can successfully finish our college course depends on it. Because I come from a country that has a totally different education system, I knew nothing about how to write an essay or reflective writing relate to my subject. Thankfully, PSEAD offered me an opportunity to improve my writing.

Discuss

Through exercises, I realized writing helps me to think deeper and organize my thoughts logically. For example, in the second week,

it said that I hadn’t written a comparative essay and that my essay was descriptive. After a discussion with my tutor, I rethought my essay and tried to figure out what had made me go wrong. Then I came up with the answer that I didn’t clarify what I wanted to argue about and how to write it down in a logical way. To be honest, that had been taught in the class, but I didn’t write notes in details. As a result, I learnt that part of academic writing the hard way. Moreover, I was too lazy. I started to write my essay in the last few days. Therefore, I was not able to think deeper and write carefully. That experience taught me that I should put down some key notes in order, to remind myself what I am going to write before I start to write. Although my essay was not very good, I have learnt to think more logical. I feel like information and thoughts in my head are no longer in chaos and have been organized through careful thought.

Target

As what I have mentioned above, PSEAD course not only improved our writing skills, but also improved our information management skills. Though I really don’t like writing, I am happy with what I have achieved in the course. In the near future, I will be careful about clarifying my main topic and organizing every paragraph logically in my writing. Hopefully, I can develop my thought in a more creative way and get a good mark in writing.

Essay

Yuqing Zhang

I wrote an essay comparing 3 chairs in several aspects, however, in my tutor’s feedback, In a word, bibliography is a quite an important part of essays, thought it is difficult for me.

China 5 weeks PSEAD BA Jewellery Design

‘Essay’ means we need to write our ideas objectively and analyse the advantages and disadvantages in 3rd person.

Summary

Bibliography I have learnt about how to write a bibliography in Harvard style. This is a special, and useful, list at the back of our essay. It was the first time for me to use it and it caused me a lot of trouble when I was writing. I always needed to record the webpage and the books’ pages and this interrupted my train of thought. However, I learnt that by using this it would show other people where my proof came from. Essays need to be written objectively and make judgements about the advantages and disadvantage of something. Therefore, the more references I use, the more it helps me to prove my ideas so that others believe my arguments.

Quotations Besides referencing, I needed to use quotations to analyse the advantages and disadvantages objectively in essay writing. It was a little difficult for me, because of my unclear key points and caused my essay to be confusing. When I used quotations, I needed to write ‘……’, which meant I borrowed arguments from books, websites, articles, etc.. However, in my view, all of these arguments should link with your opinion.

Essays are one of the most important parts in education. Apart from using referencing, to produce a great essay we need to plan first, this will help us decide the areas we want to research. After that, we must check our typing, structure and grammar carefully for mistakes. It would be silly to lose marks on these things!

Idea Sketch

Taisei Mishima Japan BA Environmental Science 5 weeks PSEAD BA Product Design

Discuss I have learnt a lot of things in the PSEAD course, in particular, this course taught me how to use a sketchbook. This skill will help me learn product design efficiently in UCA because it is the most basic and essential skill for product designer. There are two main reasons why it is important.

"I think that the PSEAD course is one of the greatest courses in the UK."

Target In the future, I would like to design products which people use for a long time, 50 years or 100 years. Moreover, I want to solve various problems with the power of design Finally, I will take over my father’s job which is the maker of baby goods. This is because I respect his job and want to design a wide range of products including baby goods.

Introduce My name is Taisei Mishima, and I will be progressing on to product design in UCA. Actually, I have wanted to study making products since I was a child. In particular, I am interested in sustainable design and biomimetic which imitates animal forms or functions. That is why I studied Environmental Science in Canada before I came to the UK. After I left the university in Canada, I worked as a Japanese maker in order to get experience and earn money to study abroad.

Firstly, every product is based on drawing in the sketchbook. In other words, initial ideas of product design are produced from the sketchbook. Secondly, I can develop these ideas by using a sketchbook. For example, first of all, I research products and draw prototypes in the sketchbook, and then analyse them. After that, I modify the part that does not work or need improvement. Through the sketchbook, I can do this process smoothly.

10 weeks PSEAD I am a 10 weeks pre-sessional English for Art & Design course student. For this 10 weeks presessional language course, I have learned a lot of things. Before I just graduated from the high school and I did not know how to write an essay, how to do the presentation, etc. And when I came here, everything was new. My IELTS was really low, and I really needed to improve it. So I think the Pre-sessional Course has been really helpful to me. It is not only English training, but also help us to prepare for the main course. And helps us to learn about the British life.

This 10 weeks Per-sessional course, I am more interesting about trips. We went on trips four times during 10 weeks. We went to Oxford, Brighton and twice to London. Because that time we can chose place, were not just museum. That was depended you. Because that time we can chose place, were not just museum. That was depended you. That time I was with our "group", we went to the shop, BRIGHTON PIER. And that night we stayed in Brighton. I can remember that night, untill 2:00, the bars still have lots of people. If you compare with Farnham, Brighton nightlife is really nice.

Why I chose International Foundation Course? Firstly, my English is not good, so I wanted to improve it. Secondly, I have a chance to study abroad for this year, why wouldn't I go? And I still need to apply for the BA Course. Before, my friend studied International Foundation Course in Farnham in UCA. She told me something about Foundation Course. It is like we will study some basic drawing, will have trips... In this year, the tutor will help us to choose major and then I will apply the BA course , again.

Introduction

This publication is about 5 week Pre-sessional course and International Foundation course. I have learnt several things in the Pre-sessional course, and also I will use my experiences and connect with my future.

my English skills "cannot hold a candle to others".I experienced understand teachers and friends.I had a hard time following the class, so I was completely lost every day. However, I got used to this environment gradually and I could address my weak points, so I realized what I had to do to improve my English skills, especially speaking and listening skills. For instance, to pay more attention to窶ツommunication skills. In addition, I realized about lack of my vocabulary. It is the main reason of the big and I. I could not speak to my friends and teachers because I had no vocablary, so I studied it. Moreover, we went to Brighton and London and I researched some art museums, it was a very good experience for me. I researched how to get to those museums by myself, and we could cooperate with my friends.

International Foundation in Art and Design

There are two reasons that I decided to study on the International Foundation three dimentional and so on, those are all attractive for me. I considered that I would try not only my area of weak point. The second reason is to try various things and to expand my possibilities. I believe that I will be able to discover some new things and widen my horizon. Although I could learn various things in the Presessional course, I will be able to study wider variety of subjects in this course. that what I want to do. I have been learning art since I was a junior high school student, especially I like to do oil painting. However, I would like to challenge myself, not only oil painting, it will connect to my future, I believe.

1.How you felt when you first saw accommodation?

MA Ducumentary Practice

First I came here, I passed outside and met everyone, honestly, not everyone just few students. Also walk around to know circumstance here. Actually, I spent almost two days to walk whole area here without tired, which was impossible, because I am too lazy to walk in my country. Haha…

Accommodation memory. “Study or Sleep in accommodation? No! Everyday is PARTY NIGHT!”

2.What did you think that live in the Farnham? Um…fIrst I saw this town, it’s quit small, you know, but it offers everything you want, which is amazing. You can find three supermarkets in the town, and also it provides clubs to have night activities. Most important thing is that inhabitant here are very very kind and it is totally safe in here. You won’t in dangerous I promise! The accommodation has always been a center of life for foreign students. There are two halls of residence on campus at Farnham, which are the Student Village and Main Hall. Most of the rooms are single with shared facilities but there are small number of twin rooms in the Main Hall and very limited number of ensuite rooms in the Student Village (these are normally allocated to students with a specific medical need for their own bathroom).

Tate modern is one of the most famous modern galleries in the world. There are a lot of interesting art works, art books and people who were tourists, students, family etc. I could see creative and historical art works at there. I have never seen these great art works before. At first I could not believe that entrance is free. It is an amazing point for students. When I went to other Europe countries, there were also great museums, galleries but most of them demanded admission fees.

Q: Which project gives you the most inspiration? Is it helpful for you? A: Projects offered me four opportunities to go to different museums, last time we went to TATE Modern Museum. I not only visited the exhibition Matisse, but also saw a lot of paintings of the masters of fine art. It was the first time I saw the famous paintings that I only new from books or the Internet so close. I also entered into the famous Rothko room, where I could feel the emotions of the artist. It really inspired me, I felt very excited. I wrote down some information I was interested in and I also painted an interesting composition and small sketches.

Q: Have you learned any new skills in this 5/10 weeks? A: I learned a lot of learning methods that I had never experienced in my country. These methods can help me to succeed in my major, e.g. academic writing, using prezi or InDesign. I also understood how to do a research and analyzed for artists and their artworks. Oh, and mind map, it is a fantastic method to document ideas.

Q: What kind of person would you like to be in the future? A: If someone asked me what my most desired thing was in the past years, my answer would be to be an artist. In grade two of my primary school, the teacher required us to write a composition named My Dream. At that time, most classmates wrote down their dreams of being a scientist, an astronaut and so on. What I wrote was to be a painter in the future. After so many years, I wondered how many people still held on to their dreams. Among all of my classmates, it was only I who was proud enough to say that I never changed my dream and that everything I did was to move towards it.

Q: So far we have done 4 projects, which project gave you the most inspiration? A: Actually, what gave me most inspiration is the trip to Oxford. The Natural History Museum was amazing, I just loved the interior architecture. Architecturally, it is the cast iron art work. It’s so beautiful, that reminds me of Harry Potter, haha....

Creativity is the act

of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Q: Could you describe your daily life in Farnham during this 10 weeks? A: Farnham is a beautiful market town surrounded by forest in my eyes. The sky is so blue. When strolling in town, I can feel the romantic atmosphere because of every household in front is decorated with beautiful flowers. The locals are very friendly, and when you need help, they will will always help and make you temporarily forget the sufferings of homesickness. However, I feel Farnham citizens consume a lot, so things are always, both, good and bad, but I still enjoy living here.

Q: What have you learned so far? A: I think the biggest reward in this course is how to write an academic essay in English. At first, when I wrote the essay, I felt a lot of pressure. I am very grateful to Adam who gave me a lot of help, he patiently explained to me what is the academic element. My last essay was with good feedback. So, thanks a lot to dear Adam! : ) Q: What do you think about Sketchbook? A: I think this is a very effective way to learn art and design, recording what you see and hear any time, and timely recording of inspiration. I think I will keep doing that.

Pre-research of The V&A Museum

Q: What is your expectation in the main course? A: Before I came to UCA, I was already an interior decoration designer. The reason why I chose UCA is because I wanted to learn and study about British interior design. I would like to see how British designers work. Also, there are so many design exhibitions and furniture expos in the UK each year. I look forward to studying and succeeding in the UK and hopefully bringing the latest design concepts and trends back to China. I would like to develop a passion and aptitude for art as it relates to interior spaces. An interior designer not only has artistic talent, but is also able to effectively communicate ideas to clients in the form of diagrams, material samples, and other visual and verbal forms of communication. Lighting, colour, balance and other elements contribute to the overall look of a space. Interior designers are able to convey these concepts to their clients in a way that is easy to understand and easy to visualize. I will definitely treasure the next year of studying in the UK.

Q: We have done many projects, which project gave you the most inspiration? Was it helpful for you? A: I quite enjoyed the first project, because I found an interesting issue that I had never thought about before which is “disability support” via the trip of Brighton museum, even though the project was about academic writing (kind of boring work).

Q: Have you learned any new skills in this 5 weeks? A: Let me think...yes. I started to get used to bringing a sketch book with me and taking notes or drawing something like mind map to record my life and also got some ideas from it when I got lost!!!

“Creativity is a sort of power that could make impossible become POSSIBLE!”

Q: Could you describe your daily life in Farnham during this 5 weeks? A: Someone said that when your living context is changed, your lifestyle also changes because we start to be aware of every decisions that we make. During these 5 weeks, I had a “healthy” habit which was jogging every sunny morning! I like the Farnham park which is near the UCA campus.

Q: I heard that every week you had a lecture and film screening or various activities. Did you enjoy it? A: Yes.... some of them were interesting but some of them were …..you know what I mean. To be honest, I slept several times in the cinema. (hahahaha)

Q: Can you talk about your tutor? How he or she helped you in the course. A: She is a nice tutor and willing to answer students’ questions, even though sometimes they are not quite suitable to ask, such as “Are you married yet?” but we got a answer that surprised us “Yes, last year!”.

Q: What kind of person would you like to be in the future? A: It is difficult to answer... uh.... For me, I would like to be a person who has empathic ability like an elephant. Because I think if people have this sort of personality, they would use different perspectives to analyse one thing and be fair, open minded and flexible.
