This year’s special recognition will be in honor of longtime Sugar Bear basketball coach and UCA Sports Hall of Famer member Ron Marvel. Marvel coached the Sugar Bears for 24 seasons from 1980-2004, retiring as the winningest collegiate women’s basketball coach in the history of the state of Arkansas with 489 wins. Marvel briefly returned to the Sugar Bear sideline in 2008, coaching the team on an interim basis for the remainder of that season, pushing his career win total to 494. In his 24 full seasons on the UCA sidelines, Marvel’s teams advanced to the postseason 21 times, including the program’s first Division II Elite Eight appearance in 2003.
