CENTRAL ARKANSAS LOCKDOWN The Sugar Bears rank 7th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 48.2 points per game, and are 11th in field goal percentage defense at 32.2 percent. They held Central Baptist College to 21 points earlier this season, breaking both the school and Southland Conference record (later broken by Lamar, which held Northwood to 19 on Dec. 18) for fewest points allowed in a game. It broke the Sugar Bears’ own Southland record of 22, set on Nov. 25, 2009 against Central Methodist. The Sugar Bears have held an opponent to fewer than 50 points seven times this season. Last season, the Sugar Bears did so a program-record 12 times, eclipsing the mark of seven set by the 1980-81 team. The Sugar Bears surrendered just 52.5 points per game during the 2011-12 regular season. CHANGING OF THE GUARD This season the Sugar Bears are replacing a pair of all-conference guards in departed seniors Nakeia Guiden (3rd team) and Destinee Rogers (honorable mention). The duo combined to play nearly 3,700 minutes and start 118 games over the previous two seasons, and combined to average approximately 16 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals per game during that span. Aside from veteran guard Micah Rice (out with a knee injury), the Sugar Bears have turned to a trio of transfers in senior Tracey Parsons, sophomore Kelcia Bufkin and redshirt freshman Kelly Hays; along with true freshman Jameka Watkins. ON THE REBOUND Coming back off a torn ACL suffered during last season’s Southland Conference Tournament in March, senior forward Desiree’ Rogers is having her best season rebounding to date – tying her best season average of 6.4 and putting together the best stretch of her career, stringing together four straight games of doublefigures rebounds for the first time in her career from Dec. 8 to Dec. 22. She averaged 12 rebounds per game over that period, getting 12 at Arkansas State, 14 against Southern Arkansas, 11 at ULM and 10 at Southern Miss. In the Southern Arkansas game, she also had 20 points - her first 20-point effort in 35 games.
