New scoreboards start of next wave of facilities upgrades 2010 was an exciting year of progess in terms of athletics facilities at UCA, highlighted by the installation of turf and other improvements at Bear Stadium; upgrades to the Farris Center including a re-designed court, new goals, courtside seating and locker room enhancements; and increased seating capacity and some cosmetic improvements in the Prince Center along with changes to the coaches’ and players’ area. The year ended with the installation of new scoreboards and a large video board in the Farris Center to enhance the gameday environment and fan experience. The new year has started in

similar fashion with new scoreboards installed earlier this week at the baseball and softball fields. Farris Field is also undergoing another major change as new stands are in the process of being installed in anticipation of the season. The luxury suite project at Estes Stadium will be ongoing between now and the 2012 football season, but announcements about major facility enhancements – including a big change at Estes Stadium – could come as soon as next month.

Director of Athletics:

Dr. Brad Teague Our 2010 year brought much change to athletics. We had coaching changes in Men’s Basketball and Baseball; updated our trademarks with great accolade; passed the first ever ten-year DI NCAA certification study; were fully admitted to active DI NCAA Membership; installed a state-of-the-art video board in basketball among other nice updates in the Farris Center; renovated the baseball complex creating a true ballpark feel; and sold the new SkyBox project to our loyal fans and supporters. It was quite a year. Now the spring semester begins with great excitement. We await the impact of our 2010 successes. Winter sports are doing well and the spring sports begin practice and competition very soon. We look forward to many more teams joining our volleyball program in participating in post season play soon. Our Purple Circle kickoff is February of each year. We will begin our series of Purple Circle meetings around the state soon starting in Conway in March. Our schedule will be posted shortly. Happy New Year and Go Bears and Sugar Bears. Brad

FORMER SUGAR BEAR STAR SIGNS PRO DEAL Former UCA volleyball standout Chloe Smith has reached an agreement with the Kuusamon Pallo-Karhut volleyball club in Finland, becoming the first former Sugar Bear to play professionally. The team plays in Kuusamo, which is just 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle. According to Google Maps, it is a 1,991 mile trip northeast from London. The season runs through March 5, with playoffs to follow. Smith left UCA as the career leader in kills (1,689), kills per set (3.78) and attempts (4,182), fourth in attack percentage (.286), sixth in blocks (336) and eighth in service aces (115).

HERBERT CONTINUES TO EXCEL FOR SUGAR BEARS Sophomore forward Megan Herbert (Rogers, Ark/Shiloh Christian) was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 17 after averaging 23 points and 15.5 rebounds per game in wins over Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. After netting 15 points and 2 rebounds in limited action in a 91-56 rout of Nicholls, Herbert put together a 21-point, 18-rebound effort in a close loss to Lamar. She got the Sugar Bears back on track with 18 points and 7 rebounds in a 69-65 win at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday – including scoring the Sugar Bears’ last seven points over the last 77 seconds to secure the win. For the season she is averaging 16.2 points and 11 rebounds – one of just six players in the country with at least 16 ppg & 11 rpg, and ranks 8th in the nation with 12 double-doubles.

UCA STUDENT-ATHLETES BOAST STRONG SEMESTER ACADEMICALLY IN FALL ‘10 UCA’s student-athletes turned in another strong semester academically during the fall term, combining for a 2.85 GPA for the semester and finishing the term with a cumulative GPA of 2.92. For the semester, 14 of the school’s 15 teams had GPAs greater than 2.6 with five teams finishing above a 3.0. Cumulatively, eight teams

are above a 3.0 and the other seven are above 2.5. “Our coaches have certainly placed an emphasis in academics and demonstrated a commitment to the student-athletes’ education,” said UCA AD Dr. Brad Teague. “I continue to be pleased with the heightened academic standards of D-I

sports. The best attribute regarding our reclassification to D-I is the enhanced academic requirements. Our GPAs, graduation rates and student quality have all improved dramatically. I commend our coaching staffs for recruiting quality students to UCA and emphasizing the importance of their college diploma.”

UCA FOOTBALL GREAT CLIMBING COACHING RANKS Mike Norvell (‘01-’05), the UCA career leader in receptions and No. 3 in receiving yards, was recently named the Co-Offensive Coordinator, Director of Recruiting and Wide Receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh – following head coach Todd Graham from Tulsa.
