Southland Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary in 2013: Celebrating a half-century of academic achievement and competitive success, the Southland Conference embarks on a special commemoration of its 50th anniversary in 2013. The celebration coincides with the Southland’s 17 championship sports during the 2013 calendar year, starting with the league’s 50th season of men’s basketball and continuing through the 50th football season next fall. Founded on March 15, 1963, five institutions of higher learning – known then as Abilene Christian College, Arkansas State College, Arlington State College, Lamar State College of Technology, and Trinity University – formed the new consortium that campus officials at the time stated “will be guided by officials who aim to operate the conference on high academic levels and sound ethics.” Further, officials touted “The Conference hopes to give two states – Arkansas and Texas – a bright new era of added athletic excellence. In addition, the conference will fill the needs of five modern, growing colleges with athletic competition calculated to build an increasing host of fans.” While the original intent of the Southland founders was to soon add other “like-strength” colleges after the conference’s formation, the original five members

Southland Conference Will Grow to 14 Teams for 2013-14: Oral Roberts University is the new kid on the block in the Southland Conference this season, but it will become an instant veteran of the league in 2013-14 when the conference welcomes four more schools into the fold, increasing the membership to 14 institutions. The league announced last November that Houston Baptist University would join the Southland, but this past August Southland commissioner Tom Burnett announced the addition of three more schools. The University of New Orleans, Abilene Christian University and the University of the Incarnate Word will be welcomed into the conference July 1, 2013, giving the Southland members in key population centers Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans, all home to significant student-recruitment and alumni bases. Additionally, original Southland Conference member Abilene Christian, one of the most decorated athletic programs in the NCAA, will return to the league after a 40-year absence. ACU and UIW will be transitioning from NCAA Division II and will not be eligible to win the conference championship during their transition periods, which should be complete in time for the 2017-18 season.

The conference encourages its member institutions and student-athletes to help promote the campaign by joining the social media conversation by using the #SouthlandStrong hashtag to tell why someone or something is Southland Strong. | Full Release Looking Back at the 2011-12 Season… McNeese State Claims Second Consecutive Southland Conference Tournament Championship: Redemption found its way toward Caitlyn Baggett, which led to McNeese State finding itself back in the NCAA tournament. Baggett, who missed a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in the championship, knocked down a pair with five seconds remaining to give the Cowgirls a 62-58 win over Stephen F. Austin for the school’s second consecutive Southland Conference tournament championship and an automatic bid to the Big Dance for the second time in as many years. McNeese State Plays SEC Regular Season Champion Kentucky in First NCAA Tournament Appearance: McNeese State’s women’s basketball team came into NCAA Tournament as the 15th seed and gave second seed Kentucky all it could hand despite falling 68-62 in the first round. Caitlyn Baggett ended the game with a game high 22 points, four shy of tying her career high. Baggett was hassled all game by Kentucky’s defense but managed to dish out four assists also. The Cowgirls committed 13 turnovers in the game, the lowest number by a Kentucky opponent this season. McNeese ended its season with a 26-8 record and tied the school record with 26 wins set by the 2010-11 team. Central Arkansas Makes First Appearance in WNIT: For a half, Central Arkansas traded blows with Oklahoma State and looked poised to score the upset victory at Gallagher-Iba Arena, but the Cowgirls proved too much in the second half as they pulled away from the Sugar Bears for a 72-51 victory in the opening round of the WNIT. UCA shot 41 percent in the first half, including 43 percent from 3-point range, as they hung with the Cowgirls. Junior guard Micah Rice led the Sugar Bears with 17 points, hitting 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Destinee Rogers had 12 points in her final game at UCA. Sam Houston State Makes First Postseason Appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational: The WBI marked the first time in Sam Houston’s 25 years as a member of the NCAA Division I Southland Conference that the Bearkats have advanced to a national post-season tournament. In the first round for the Bearkats, Britni Martin scored 22 points and Sequeena Thomas pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Sam Houston State to a 73-55 victory over Rice. The Bearkats advanced to the next round to take on Northern Iowa but fell 78-69 in Huntsville. Sam Houston was led by Britni Martin with 19 points. Sequeena Thomas scored 13 points. Angela Beadle and Chanice Smith each scored 11 points. Smith led the Kats with 10 rebounds. Sam Houston ended the season with an 18-12 record. Stephen F. Austin Hosts First Round of WBI: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were unable to slow down a dynamic Northern Iowa Panthers’ offense in an 83-67 loss in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational at William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA had four players score in double-figures, including a team-high 16 points from Annette Davis but the Ladyjacks could not slow down a Panthers’ team that shot 51 percent from the floor, including 41 percent from 3-point territory. The Ladyjacks finished the 2011-12 season with one of their best campaigns this century, making their first appearance in the postseason in the Brandon Schneider era and winning at least 23 games for the first time since 2005.

Prior to their win against the Golden Hurricane, the Ladyjacks spent nearly an entire month away from Johnson Coliseum where they found the going tough against non-conference foes by compiling a 1-4 record. In the win over Tulsa four Ladyjacks scored in double-figures for the third time this season, including a career-high 17 points from sophomore forward Daylyn Harris…SFA is allowing opponents to shoot just 25 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (36-of-141), which is good enough for the 40th-best mark in the country . Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Senior Jessica Jammer powered the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women’s basketball team for the second straight game with 14 points and seven rebounds on Saturday in the Islanders’ 69-38 road loss to TCU…The Islanders dropped 10 of its 11 non-conference games, including eight in the month of November…Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tallied 15 steals against TCU and also scored 24 of its 38 points in the paint...freshman Janae Blount has scored in double figures in seven of the Islanders’ 11 games this season. Blount leads the team with 10.6 points per game and has a team-high 20 steals…Jammer also has a team-high 20 steals and is second on the team with 7.4 points per game. She leads the glass with 5.9 boards per game…Marquesha Anderson-Sparks leads the team with a free-throw percentage of .857…Coach Royce Chadwick has used four different starting lineups this season…the Islanders will ring in the 2013 year with Southland Conference action starting on Friday, Jan. 4, at Sam Houston State.
