In 2012, 308 alumni sponsors offered 511 externship opportunities in California and across the globe. Student interest was very strong for this in-demand program, with 933 applications. We are particularly pleased that over 39% of student applications came from Pell Grant recipients (367 out of 933).

Presenting student Career Destinations and the Career Center’s top strategic priorities
Looking Ahead: Career Center Top Priorities Augmenting Service for Letters & Science Students Addressing the critical needs of L&S students is one of our top priorities and we are adding staffing and resources to help these students find career paths while building the skills employers value most. We are also proud to introduce a multi-faceted suite of online tools called “Career Ladders for Letter & Science.” Expanding Internship Opportunities Today’s students see earning a degree as a critical investment in their futures and believe internships, externships, and their variations are integral parts of a meaningful college experience. Providing internships has always been one of our major priorities and going forward we are giving our already substantial internship function even more prominence and devoted resources by organizing a new internship structure at the Career Center. Embarking on the “Employer 100 Initiative” Our staff will visit a minimum of 100 employers in the coming year to learn the latest hiring and work place trends to inform our work with students. These outreach efforts will also lead to greater employer participation in Career Center events and more externship, internship, and job opportunities. Highly Valued by Students. While we usually place in the top five most important campus units in annual Committee on Student Fees surveys, students ranked us as the number one most important unit in the 2012-13 survey. The New Career Center. We moved to a conveniently located facility in fall 2012. Students, employers, and campus partners are very positive about its open and vibrant design. With our large event space, we held Employer Info Sessions for the first time. Career Ladders for L&S. Through the generous support of a Cal alumnus, we launched this innovative portfolio of online tools, including videos, a gallery of alumni testimonials, and an online skills tool. A Spotlight on Diversity. We serve all Berkeley students, and our Diversity Team presented programs with the Transfer Reentry Students Parent Center, Casa Joaquin, Incentive Awards Program, Cal Independent Scholars Network, and Cal Veterans.

International Career Counselor. This new staff member provides career services for our growing international student population through 1-1 counseling, special events, and partnerships with global employers.

Candid Feedback. We added a Pre Med Personal Statement Reviewer to our cadre of Mock Interview Consultants who give students expert feedback.

Oxford Exchange. University of Oxford-UC Berkeley Exchange. This unique arrangement saw one of our career counselors trade places with a UK counterpart.

Career Center Kudos. Business Week awarded career services for undergraduate business students an “A.” Our staff made a splash at national associations through committee involvement, publications, and presenting conference sessions.
