Dr. Santa Ono - University President Dr. Ono’s service in the community includes the Cincinnati Business Committee and the boards of Ohio’s Third Frontier, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, CincyTech, UC Health, Uptown Consortium, United Way, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Japan America Society of Cincinnati. He is a member of the Chancellor’s Ohio Completion Task Force of the Ohio Board of Regents as well as the Executive Committee of the STRIVE partnership and served on the Board of Advisors for Strive for College.

Santa J. Ono, PhD, is the 28th President at the University of Cincinnati. After serving on an interim basis for two months, he was appointed to the presidency on Oct. 23, 2012. President Ono first arrived at UC in 2010, serving two years as the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. As Provost, he led the development of an Academic Master Plan (AMP) aligned to the university’s strategic plan, UC2019. The AMP, unveiled in May 2012, outlined an initial investment of about $10 million toward long-term strategic goals set for completion in UC’s bicentennial year, 2019.

He has served on the Medical Research Council’s Medical Advisory Board and College of Experts and the IMS and HAI study sections of the National Institutes of Health. He has consulted widely for companies such as GSK, Cambridge Antibody Technologies plc (now part of Astra Zeneca), Johnson & Johnson, Santen Inc. and Oxagen plc. As a scholar and researcher, Dr. Ono has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Immunology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Immunology and the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology.

Dr. Ono is the first Asian American to serve as UC’s chief executive and one of only a few Asian Americans to serve as president of a major research institution in the United States. Dr. Ono also serves as Professor of Pediatrics within UC’s College of Medicine and Professor of Biology in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Ono’s principal research interests focus on transcriptional regulation in the human immune system, mechanisms of mast cell dependent inflammation on the ocular surface and the immune component of age-related macular degeneration.

Among his many honors and awards are the American Diabetes Association Career Development Award, the Investigator Award from the National Arthritis Foundation, the Brit Katz Award (Emory University), the Roche Laboratories Award for Excellence in Research, the Pharmacia International Award in Allergy Research. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012.

Prior to UC, Dr. Ono served at Emory University as Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives and Deputy to the Provost and then Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, also serving as Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Emory University School of Medicine. Earlier in his career, he also served in a variety of teaching, research and administrative positions at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School (and the Schepens Eye Research Institute), University College London (UCL) and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Dr. Ono earned his PhD at McGill University and his BA at the University of Chicago. His training in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard was supported by a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellowship.

Mike Bohn - Director of Athletics Mike Bohn was named the director of athletics at the University of Cincinnati on Feb. 6, 2014.

construction on the Vandal Athletics Center, the first athletic facilities improvement in two decades. Additionally, he spearheaded a 20% increase in the Vandal Scholarship Fund and a $350,000 surge in annual corporate support.

Bohn’s career spans thirty years and includes record-setting achievements at multiple institutions.

Bohn spent three years at Colorado State University as associate director of athletics. At CSU, he was responsible for all external revenue-producing operations, including: ticket sales; fundraising through the Greater Ram Club; licensing; corporate sales; signage; capital campaigns; broadcasting rights fees; and special events.

As director of athletics at the University of Colorado from 2005 to 2013, Bohn successfully led their transition to the Pac-12 Conference. CU won four conference championship titles within two years, including the first for men’s basketball in over 43 years. Meanwhile, Bohn enhanced academic support for scholar-athletes, resulting in departmental highs for APR and GPA.

Prior to CSU, Bohn served as Director of Marketing for the College Football Association. The CFA, the precursor to the current Bowl Championship Series, consisted of six major football conferences encompassing 67 universities. Bohn assisted with the CFA’s administration of a $67 million television package involving ABC, ESPN and ESPN2.

He oversaw several multi-million dollar capital projects and facility upgrades, as well as secured the largest corporate sponsorship in school history. In 2008, CU garnered national attention for launching the first zero-waste stadium initiative at the college or professional level. In 2013, CU was named the most economically efficient athletics department in the nation by the Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics at Texas A&M.

He began his athletic administrative career at the Air Force Academy, where he played a major role in increasing football season ticket sales from 6,000 to 20,000 and in implementing a fundraising campaign that generated $16 million for stadium improvements.

Prior to the University of Colorado, Bohn served as director of athletics at San Diego State University. Under his watch, SDSU football increased season ticket sales by 27% and game-day attendance by 59%, in addition to setting a SDSU single-game attendance record of 57,000 against Idaho State. The SDSU baseball team set a NCAA single-game attendance record of 40,000.

Bohn received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, where he was recruited as a quarterback and also played baseball, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University. He is married to the former Kim Zeren, and they have a son, Brandon, and a daughter, Michaelyn Tynan, along with a sonin-law, John Tynan, and a grandson, Chase Tynan.

As director of athletics at the University of Idaho from 1999 to 2003, Bohn successfully led their transition to the Division I-A ranks from the Big Sky Conference. Under Bohn, UI began

Head Men’s Track & Field/ Cross Country Coach

Kris Mack enters his first season as the head men’s track and field/cross country coach at Cincinnati after spending the last four years as an assistant coach with the Bearcats. On top of his head coaching duties, Mack will continue to coach the jumps for the men’s and women’s teams.

at various levels. In 2003, Mack served as an assistant coach at Bloomington North High School in Bloomington, Ind. In one year at Bloomington North, Mack led four athletes (two throwers/two vaulters) to the Indiana State Track and Field Championship meet and helped Bloomington North to the 2003 Sectional and Regional Track and Field Championship titles. While working as a graduate assistant coach at Indiana University from 2000-02, Mack worked with Dino Efthimiou as he placed fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pole vault (17’11.25) and claimed all-America status. In 2002, Mack earned his M.S. in Biomechanics from Indiana University, where he studied under Jesus Dapena, the Sports Biomechanics high jump specialist for USA Track and Field. During the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, Mack was an assistant coach for Sky Jumpers Vertical Sports Club and coached Paula Serrano to a 10th-place finish in the women’s pole vault. While working at Sky Jumpers (1996-2000), Mack assisted with the development of many elite high school pole vaulters, including Chelsea Johnson, Shayla Balentine, Monica Pacas, and Kasey Lundgren.

In his previous four seasons at UC, Mack has established the Bearcats as one of the strongest pole vaulting programs in the country. He has mentored a pair of All-Americans in MacKenzie Fields and Josh Dangel while also helping his vaulters snatch seven combined BIG EAST crowns. Mack has also helped his pole vaulters etch themselves in the UC record books. On the women’s side, he has coached seven student-athletes into the all-time Top 10 list including Fields, who holds the school indoor and outdoor records. She broke both records during the 2013 season by clearing 13’ 11.25” indoors and 14’ 3.5” outdoors.On the men’s side, he has helped Dangel and Tommy Marks jump into the Top 10 lists. His experience has also helped the Bearcats make their mark in the other jumping events. Brandon Fitch moved to second all-time on UC’s outdoor performance list with a clearance of 7’ 1” in 2010. Tariq Sanders and Michael Nwankwo also jumped into the Top 10 list in the triple jump during the 2012 season. Mack also aided Shayna Portis and Cameron Gardner in reaching the school’s top performance list in both long jump and triple jump. Prior to Cincinnati, Mack spent six seasons at Stanford working with the Cardinal’s pole vaulters and multis.

Mack completed his education at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in 2000, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Kinesiology and Biochemistry. While on the track team at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Mack obtained a personal best of 17-4 in the pole vault and his team qualified five pole vaulters to the 1998 and 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

During his time in Palo Alto, Calif., Mack had five athletes qualify for an NCAA Championship and coached them to a combined eight All-America honors. Pole vaulter Graeme Hoste is Mack’s most decorated protégé qualifying for the NCAA Championships five times and earning three AllAmerica honors. He also coached Whitney Liehr to two AllAmerica honors in just her second season at Stanford.

Mack and his wife Paula (Serrano), the 1999 NCAA Champion in the women’s pole vault, have three sons, Travis, Caleb, and Dustin.

Coaches Susan Seaton enters her fifth season as UC’s women’s track and field/cross country head coach after first serving as an assistant coach from 2004-08 and interim head coach during the 2008-09 season.

She has quickly elevated the UC program through a teamoriented and family-focused philosophy that has seen UC perform at record-breaking levels on the track while setting new standards for academic achievement. During her tenure, the team has set 23 school records, won nine BIG EAST Conference individual or relay titles, sent 36 athletes to the NCAA Regional Outdoor Championships, qualified 10 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, and produced three All-Americans. In 2012, she led the women’s teams to their bestever performances in the BIG EAST Championships, finishing second indoor and fourth outdoor. At the indoor championship, UC won four individual titles and swept the awards with Kathy Klump being named Most Outstanding Track Performer and Jasmine Cotton being tagged the Most Outstanding Field Performer. Klump and Cotton each went on to be named All-Americans in the 800-meter run and pentathlon. The Bearcats success continued outdoors with two additional conference crowns. A total of 12 athletes participated at the NCAA First Round with four advancing to the NCAA Championships. Klump became a twotime All-American in the 800 meters, while three other Bearcats earned honorable mention All-America honors. Seaton serves as UC’s throws coach and has helped her throwers etch their names in the school records book. She aided her student-athletes in garnering 10 of the 12 possible school records. Three of Seaton’s UC throwers have earned individual conference titles: Steve Kahle, shot put; Jo Young, hammer throw; and Brian Zimmerman, javelin. Additionally, Ian Jarman won the 2008 Penn Relays title in the hammer throw, and Emelie Larsson (javelin) and Frida Akerstrom (shot put) have each won Swedish National titles.

Head Women’s Track & Field/ Cross Country

mentored five All-Americans, 16 conference champions, and nine NCAA qualifiers and was part of 15 conference championship team titles and 10 NCAA Top 10 teams. A native of Saalfeld, Germany, Seaton earned her bachelor’s degree from the German College of Sports Science in 1991 and a master’s in exercise science from the University of Leipzig in 1994. Seaton was a standout athlete for the East German junior track and field team and competed for her German club team SC Motor Jena from 1984-87. She has competitive experience in the javelin, discus, shot put, multi events, high jump, long jump, hurdles and cross country. At the prime of her career she was a javelin specialist and took third place at the 1989 East German amateur national championships and finished in second place at the 1986 national club championships. Seaton has earned Level I and Level II USA Track and Field coaching education certifications, is a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy and a member of the Alliance for Women Coaches. In the fall of 2010, Seaton was selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Track and Field / Cross Country Committee and recently had her term extended to June 2015. Susan and her husband, Robert, who reside in College Hill, are parents to Patrick and Aidan.

Off the track, the UC women’s program has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Awards in cross country and track and field three times. UC also named 11 individuals to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team after reaching NCAA preliminary qualifying marks in their respective events while posting GPA’s greater than 3.25. Before joining the Bearcats Seaton spent six seasons as an assistant coach at the Wisconsin and three years as an assistant at Northern Arizona. During that time Seaton

Coaches Before joining the ACU staff, Burroughs was the assistant cross country coach and an assistant track and field coach at Iona College (N.Y.) for three seasons. Burroughs helped lead the Gaels to unprecedented success from 2005-07 as he was part of a program that posted three straight top-four finishes at the NCAA Division I national cross country championship meet, 4th in 2005, 3rd in 2006, and NCAA National Runnerups in 2007. While at Iona, Burroughs helped coach the Gaels to three straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles and helped the women’s program to its third straight MAAC title.

Sam Burroughs Assistant Coach/Distance

Additional coaching stops include Manhattan College and Boston University. Sam Burroughs enters his first season at Cincinnati as associate head cross country coach and an assistant track & field coach. He oversees the middle and long distance-runner runners.

Burroughs, who earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology in 2000 from the University of Buffalo, competed as a top member for their programs. Burroughs remained at Buffalo for graduate work, earning his Master of Science in Human Performance in 2002.

Burroughs comes to UC after a three-year stint at North Texas. During his time with the Mean Green, he saw a complete transformation of their distance programs. He coached six All-Conference performers in cross country: Patrick Strong (2010), Sara Dietz (2010, 2011), Ingrid Mollenkopf (2010, 2011), Jo Adams (2012), and Troy Taylor (2012).In 2011, Burroughs was named the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The success in cross county spilled onto the track for North Texas. Burroughscoached multiple athletes to a number of school records:Sara Dietz broke a 31 year old record in the indoor 800m and 3000m, Ingrid Mollenkopf rewrote her own school record in the 10,000m, Josephine Adams broke Dietz’s 3000m and took down two 1980 records in the indoor mile & outdoor 1500m, Charlotte Wilson chopped 30 seconds off the 3000m steeplechase record, and Matt Russ to rewrote the oldest North Texas indoor school record from 1974 in the 800m.Point contributions from the distance events was a key factor when the North Texas women’s program won back-toback Sun Belt Outdoor Conference Championships in 2012 and 2013. Prior to North Texas, Burroughs spent two years in the same position at Abilene Christian University, where he collected two Lone Star Conference Championships, a South Central Regional Championship and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA championship meet in men’s cross country. He was named the 2008 South Central Regional Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association as well as the Lone Star Conference Men’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and ‘09. In 2010, Burroughs coached Amos Sang to first place finishes in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs at the NCAA Championships as well as leading Sang and Cleophas Tanui to first and second place finishes, respectively, in the 10,000 meter run at the prestigious Penn Relays in 2009.

Coaches Nadine Faustin-Parker enters her first season with Cincinnati as an Assistant Track and Field Coach. FaustinParker, who is a former three-time Olympian in the 100m hurdles, will coach the Bearcats’ short sprinters and hurdlers. Faustin-Parker comes to UC after spending two seasons at Mansfield University (Pa.) as the Head Women’s Track and Field Coach/Assistant Men’s Coach. In her short time with the Mountaineers, she made an immediate impact on the program. A total of 26 school records were set in her two seasons, and she coached 15 PSAC qualifiers, three All-PSAC, two PSAC Champions, nine NCAA provisional qualifying mark performances, and one NCAA qualifier.Faustin-Parker’s efforts brought forth Mansfield University’s first female and male sprinters in history to win a conference title. She also developed the first male sprinter in the history of the program to qualify for the NCAA Championships. While the former Olympian led the Mountaineers, Benae Edwards won the NCAA crown in the 10,000 meters, which was the first in school history, and Mansfield had a freshman named the PSAC Freshman Track Athlete of the Year.

Nadine FaustinParker Assistant Coach/ Sprints & Hurdles professionals who are committed to civic engagement as well as philanthropic endeavors benefiting Haiti and Haitian organizations and causes. Faustin-Parker lives in the Cincinnati area with her husband, Anthony Parker, and son, Anthony Daniel Parker.

She came to Mansfield after serving four years as the Director of Track and Field Operations and Assistant Coach at her alma mater, North Carolina. She assisted the program with the multi-event athletes and hurdlers. During her tenure at UNC, she coached eight All-ACC honorees, three ACC Champions and five NCAA Qualifiers, inlcuding Mateo Sossah, who was an NCAA runner-up in the men’s decathlon. Faustin-Parker represented Haiti in the 100-meter hurdles in three Olympic Games (2000 in Sydney, Australia; 2004 in Athens, Greece; 2008 in Beijing, China). She was a semifinalist in Athens, posting a personal-best time of 12.74, which is a Haiti national record. She also holds the 60-meter hurles record in a time of 7.99. Faustin-Parker participated in the European Track and Field Curcuit from 1999-2008. She was a five-time semifinalist at the Indoor and Outdoor World Championships. Faustin-Parker graduated from UNC in 1999 as a studentathlete with All-America honors. She was inducted into the University of North Carolina Track and Field Hall of Honor in 2007. In 2012, she was awarded with the NCAA Women Coaches Academy Judy Sweet award. Several months later, she was named to the inaugural list of 25 people to be selected to The 1804 List of 25 Haitian American Changemakers in the United States by The Haitian Roundtable, an organization of Haitian-American

Coaches Wineberg was a two-time conference champion in the decathlon at UC and an All-American in 2004. He holds the school record in the decathlon, with a score of 7,584. Wineberg graduated from UC in 2004 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was also honored as the Legion of Excellence Award winner for graduating with the highest senior GPA of the team in 2004.

Assistant Coach/ 400, 800 and Multievents

Post collegiately, Wineberg competed at the national level for two seasons and placed as high as fifth at the indoor U.S. National Meet in the heptathlon. While training and competing at a national level, Wineberg also served as a parttime coach for the UC track program, working with the long and high jumpers.

Chris Wineberg enters his sixth season as a full time member of the University of Cincinnati coaching staff, with his responsibilities ranging from coaching the men’s and women’s sprint programs and multi-event athletes.

Chris is married to former UC 400-meter standout and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Mary Wineberg (formerly Danner). The couple welcomed a daughter, Brooklyn, in August 2009.

In 2006, Wineberg was hired as an assistant track coach where he strictly worked with the men’s and women’s sprint programs and now he coaches the sprints in addition to the multi-event athletes. In the past five seasons, UC has seen 23 school records fall in the sprint and multi events. Wineberg has coached 64 All Big East Performers, 25 Regional/NCAA First Round Qualifiers, 16 Big East - Top 3 Finishers, 6 Big East Champions, 4 NCAA Finals Qualifiers, 2 Big East Athlete’s of the Meet and 1 All American. Most notably, Wineberg coached Antione Drakeford, who broke the UC school record in the 400 meters with a time of 45.83 and eventually went on to earn All-American honors in the 400 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Additionally, Wineberg coached Jasmine Cotten as she went on to shatter the indoor pentathlon record at the BIG EAST Championships with a score of 4,073 en route to being named the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer. Cotten went on to place 14th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon and later finished 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon. Wineberg also coaches his wife, Mary Wineberg, as she continues her professional career in the 400m after winning Olympic Gold in 2008 as a member of the USA 4x400m relay team. Mary has been ranked as high as 8th in the World in the 400m dash. The 2011 season was an exceptional one for Wineberg and the Lady Bearcat Sprint group. The Lady Bearcat sprinters set school records in the indoor 60m dash, the indoor 200m dash, the indoor 4x400m relay, the outdoor 100m dash, the outdoor 4x100m relay, and outdoor 4x400m relay. They posted NCAA qualifiers in every outdoor sprint event and the 4x400m relay team of Portis, Arnold, Klump, and Rhodes brought home the first Conference relay title in program history winning the event at The 2011 Outdoor Big East Championships.

The restorations also included a regulation-sized soccer field with a FieldTurf Pro playing surface, which is sanctioned by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, for all levels of play except the World Cup finals and semifinals.

Gettler Stadium is the home for both the University of Cincinnati of the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams, as well as men’s and women’s soccer teams. The facility was renovated following the 2002-03 academic year and was named in recognition of the gift by Ben and Dee Gettler to the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village.

In the summer of 2012, the playing surface at Gettler Stadium was replaced with FieldTurf Revolution. The new, top-of-the-line monofilament surface offers the traditional FieldTurf surface, but with more of a soccer blend that incorporates longer and thicker blades of artificial grass compared to those used for football.

The upgrades included a new eight-lane, 400-meter track, permanent grandstand seating for 1,400, concession stands and restrooms, team rooms and a press box. These enhancements allowed Cincinnati to host the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Prior to the renovations made possible by the Gettlers, the facility also had a facelift in 2000 that saw the installation of new lights and a new scoreboard with message center.
