Athletics Director Whit Babcock - @WhitBabcock Whit Babcock was officially announced as the University of Cincinnati’s 14th Director of Athletics on Oct. 22, 2011. Babcock, a former college baseball player, joined the Bearcats following five years at the University of Missouri, where he served as the executive associate director of athletics. The Bearcats’ leader has initiated a new administrative structure within the department, proposed a comprehensive vision and capital campaign for athletic facility enhancement including an $86-million renovation and expansion to Nippert Stadium, set forth a scholarship enhancement plan for Olympic sports, crafted a three-year strategic plan for all facets of the program, hired head coaches in football, baseball, men’s track and field, lacrosse, volleyball and women’s soccer and implemented numerous external relations strategies to connect and engage with Bearcats’ alumni, donors, fans, and students. His background in fundraising, marketing, promotions, ticket sales, licensing and multimedia partnerships were key attributes in support of his hiring. In his introductory press conference, Babcock cited three guiding principles for his vision for
the athletic department’s future: commitment to comprehensive excellence, centering the department’s focus on the student-athlete experience, and engaging the community. The department operates under Babcock’s ONE TEAM philosophy which is centered on the core values of Integrity, Respect, Determination and Excellence working together as 547 student-athletes, 150 staff, 19 sports and ONE TEAM. Over the past year, Babcock has implemented numerous changes in the academic area aimed at enhancing the student-athlete experience, reinstated and enhanced scholarship funding to Olympic sports, added men’s indoor track and field as the department’s 19th sport and streamlined his executive team to ensure better lines of communications across the department and University community. A native of Harrisonburg, Va., Babcock lettered four seasons in baseball at James Madison University and served as team captain his senior year. He earned his bachelor’s degree from JMU in 1992. In 1996, he received his master’s in sports management from West Virginia University.

The University of Cincinnati opened the Keating Aquatic Center in early 2006. The Keating Aquatics Center is named after Bill Keating, Sr., who was a Bearcats student-athlete (BBA 1950, JD 1950), member of the UC Athletic Hall of Fame, a recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Medal, and a former Chairman of the Board of the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees. Part of the $113 million Campus Recreation Center, the natatorium features an eightlane, 50-meter swimming course with an integrated diving well. The pool contains 12,000 square feet of water surface and includes a moveable bulkhead that will provide a high degree of flexibility in training course configuration. In March 2013, UC’s Campus Recreation Center was ranked the No. 1 most amazing campus student recreation center in America by bestcollegereviews.org. The Campus Recreation Center, as well as the natatorium, was designed locally by KZF Design, Inc., working with internationally renowned architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, based out of Santa Monica, Calif. It was built by Turner Construction, and features a leisure pool as well as the varsity pool, a six court gymnasium, locker rooms, recreation offices, a food court, a juice bar overlooking the gym, a study lounge, administrative offices, weight/fitness areas and a climbing wall.

HEAD COACH MONTY HOPKINS Now in his 26th season as head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming teams, former UC letter-winner Monty Hopkins has used his wealth of competitive and coaching experience to annually produce conference champions and NCAA qualifiers. After the past several seasons competing in the BIG EAST, Hopkins now leads the Bearcats into the American Athletic Conference with depth the program has not seen in years thanks to an aggressive plan to reach the full compliment of scholarships. This follows a 2012-13 campaign that saw fifth and sixth place finishes for the men and women, respectively, at the BIG EAST Championships. That improved on the team performances from the 2011-12 that included Liz Hansson winning her second consectuvei BIG EAST title in the 50-yard free style, giving UC its 12th individual BIG EAST championship. Through his time at UC, the Bearcats have won a combined 12 (seven women’s, five men’s) conference championships, and had two NCAA Champions (Becky Ruehl & Josh Schneider), 17 NCAA All-Americans, 14 Academic All-Americans, and three Olympians. He has coached seven Jimmy Nippert Award Winners, including four of the past five honorees. The Nippert Award honors the top graduating senior student-athletes at UC. The Bearcats have also earned a host of BIG EAST Conference Sport Excellence Awards, both individual and team honors, and numerous other academic honors. Hopkins was instrumental in the development of 2010 UC graduate and 2012 U.S. Olympic hopeful Josh Schneider, who won the 2010 NCAA Champion in the 50 freestyle, giving the Bearcats their first swimming national title since Charles Keating in 1946. Schneider left UC as a five-time all-America selection and seven-time BIG EAST Conference Champion. During the 2010-11 season, three school records were set and Hansson won the BIG EAST Championship in the 50 freestyle as the women finished a best-ever fifth at the BIG EAST Conference Championships. In 2009-10, Schneider was one of three Bearcats to earn All-BIG EAST honors, along with Jeremy Peter and Nathan Williams. Schneider won three individual league titles (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly), setting UC, meet, and pool records in all three events and was named the BIG EAST Men’s Swimmer of the Year for the second-straight season. Elinore de Jong and Schneider both won the 2008-09 and 2009-10 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. In 2009, the women’s team was ranked No. 2 in the nation academically by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The women’s squad also won the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for having the best team GPA in the league for the second-straight year. Schneider, an Honorable-Mention All-America honoree at the NCAA meet, was named the 2008-09 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Men’s Swimmer after winning three individual titles and setting three BIG EAST records at the league championship meet in February. Thirteen school records fell during the season and eight swimmers grabbed 15 All-BIG EAST honors
with their finishes at the league championship meet. The 2006-07 Bearcats finished fifth (men) and eighth (women) in the BIG EAST and a pair of UC records fell. Following the season, as is usually the case with a Hopkins-coached team, the Bearcats garnered several academic awards. Gerdien de Jong and Marcel Kleiner earned the BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar Athlete Award. Kleiner was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. Hopkins’ 2006-07 team once again excelled in the classroom as each team was ranked nationally by the College Swimming Coaches of America (CSCAA). The men were tabbed as one of 63 teams in the country to earn All-Academic honors, and also boosted the ninth best GPA in the nation. The women were also diligent in the classroom, having the 49th-best GPA nationally and were recognized as an All-American team. His 2004-05 teams had one NCAA qualifier, Ann Degenstein, who earned all-America honors after finishing 11th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Four Bearcats earned Academic All-America honors in that season, and the men’s and women’s programs each finished 10th nationally in combined grade point average. Hopkins directed the 2003-04 men’s and women’s teams to fourth-place finishes at the Conference USA Championships. Louise Gowens finished 32nd in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA Championships. UC’s women’s team was named a 2004 Academic All-American Team by the CSCAA. UC, under Hopkins, claimed two Conference USA Swimmer of the Year awards in 2002-03. Scott Davison qualified for his fourth consecutive NCAA Championship and was named C-USA Men’s Swimmer of the Year after setting a school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:24.82, nearly a full second faster than the old mark. Ann Degenstein was named C-USA Freshman Swimmer of the Year after winning the 200 butterfly, setting a new C-USA record of 2:01.50. The 2001-02 women’s team captured the first-ever C-USA Championship. Based on the overall team’s outstanding performance, Hopkins was named C-USA Coach of the Year. Four swimmers qualified for the NCAA Championships, with Ryan McNally and Maria Oberg each earning all-America honors. Oberg went on the become a five-time NCAA All-American In 2000-01, Hopkins directed the women’s team to its fifth-straight National Independent Conference (NIC) title and the men to a second-place finish. The teams combined to take home nine individual conference titles, and three Bearcats, Steve Davison, Ryan McNally and Oberg participated in the NCAA Championships. In 1999-2000, Nelly Jorgenson was an NCAA AllAmerican in the 200 freestyle and Sofia Svensson made the Top-8 in the 200 backstoke. Honza Vitazka (Czech Republic) and Jeppe Nielson (Denmark) both participated in the 2000 Sydney Olympics with Honza making the semi-finals in the 200 IM. Vitazka was a six-time NCAA All-American and was inducted into the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. The 1997-98 campaign proved to be one of the most distinguished
in the school’s history. The men’s and women’s teams both claimed conference titles, with the men finishing 23rd at the NCAA Championship and the women 25th. Blake Layda became the first Bearcat to break 20 seconds in the 50 free and Vitazka qualified first to the NCAA meet in the 200 IM. Steven McLeod also earned NCAA All-American honors in the 1,650 free. Hopkins’ 1995-96 women’s team left its mark when the Bearcats placed 16th at the NCAA Championships. Becky Ruehl became UC’s first female National Champion in any sport when she captured the 10-meter platform diving competition. She was named NCAA Diver of the Year for her efforts. Later that year, Ruehl made the U.S. Olympic team and placed fourth in platform diving at the Atlanta Olympics. Angie Trostel placed in both finals at the USA Olympic Trials and went on to be a nine-time NCAA All-American and four-time NIC Champion. Following the 1996 NCAA Championship, diving coach Charlie Casuto was named NCAA Coach of the Year and later selected as one of the U.S. Olympic Team coaches. UC’s first conference championship came in Hopkins’ third year both the men and the women won the 1992 N.I.C. Championship meet. Brent Ellery was the first swimming NCAA All-American for a Hopkins-coached team. In Hopkins’ first year as Head Coach at UC the 1989 Bearcats divers, Steve Bell, Dean Panaro and Diane Kelly, who were coached by Casuto, brought home six All-American honors. Hopkins became head coach at Cincinnati in 1989 after an 11-year club head coaching career, with stints as an assistant coach at Ohio State from 1981-83, Mission Viejo in 1985 and Louisiana State in 1988. He coached several worldclass swimmers and national qualifiers, as well as over 40 junior national qualifiers in nine years as a USS head coach at Westerville Aquatic Club (Columbus, Ohio), Texas Aquatics (Ft. Worth, Texas) and perennial national power Lakeside Swim Team (Louisville, Ky.). During his tenure at Lakeside, Hopkins coached a Pan-Am gold medalist and developed a 1988 Olympian. While at the Westerville Aquatic Club, he also coached the Westerville North High boys’ team for two seasons and the girls’ team for one year. Hopkins was a four-year letterman, a two-time conference champion, two time NCAA qualifier and a 1976 Olympic Trials qualifier while swimming at UC. He served as co-captain his senior season and was a recipient of the Jimmy Nippert Award as the top UC male senior student-athlete. A 1978 College of Business graduate of Cincinnati, Hopkins earned all-state honors at Mariemont High School and was an AAU Nationals participant with the Cincinnati Marlins before coming to UC. Hopkins and his wife, Celeste, a UC graduate from the College of Education and an elementary school teacher at Wilson Elementary in Anderson Township, have a son, Daniel, a sophomore at UC majoring in business and a daughter, Sarah.

ASSISTANT COACH MATT ENSE
University of Cincinnati head swimming and diving coach Monty Hopkins has announced the addition of Matt Ense to his staff as an assistant coach. Ense comes to UC following a year as head women’s swimming and diving coach at DePauw University (Ind.). “Matt is an energetic, intelligent and dedicated coach who is committed to our team and university goals,” Hopkins said. “He’s a Cincinnati guy who’s had the experience of living and coaching in several places, giving him a sincere appreciation for what a special place this city is and this university has become.” Ense added his excitement to join UC program. “I would like to thank Coach Hopkins for the opportunity to come back to Cincinnati and join the Bearcat family,” Ense said. “It is an honor to work with such a great staff and athletic department. I’m looking CINCINNATI SWIMMING & DIVING 22
forward to working with Coach Hopkins and the student-athletes to continue building on their successes in and out of the pool.” Ense spent the 2012-13 year as just the second women’s head coach at DePauw, where he led the Tigers to a third-place showing at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. His squad sent five studentathletes to the NCAA Division III Championships, earning DePauw a 27th place finish nationally. Prior to his time at DePauw, Ense was an assistant coach at Division III powerhouse Denison. Both men’s and women’s squads finished in the topthree nationally each season he was with the Big Red, while the men took home the NCAA Division III title in 2011 and ‘12. During his four years there, the women’s team broke 32 school records, 25 conference marks and six national records, while swimmers achieved All-America status on 178 occasions. The men’s team posted 35 school records, 15 conference marks and 10 at the NCAA level, while totaling 180 All-America performances. In 2012, he was named the CollegeSwimming.com Rising Assistant Coach of the Year, with long-time Denison Head Coach Greg Parini calling Ense his “best assistant coach in 25 years.” Before arriving at Denison, Ense worked alongside current Michigan head coach Mike
Bottom for three months in Key Largo, Fla., helping prepare 13 Olympians for the 2008 Summer Olympiad in Beijing. Trainee Nathan Adrian was part of the 400 free relay which won gold and set a world record. A graduate of Cincinnati’s Oak Hill High School, Ense went on to swim at Eastern Michigan, where he was a fivetime Mid-American Conference champion and MAC ScholarAthlete. He also competed at the 2000 US Olympic Trials, where he finished ninth in the 5,000. Hopkins is excited for Ense to get started with the Bearcats. “Matt is as eager to come back to Cincinnati and be a Bearcat as we are to have him on the team,” the head coach added. “He’s worked hard to learn as much about the sport from coaches as possible and now he gets the chance to contribute that knowledge to our ‘One Team’ philosophy.”

She worked mainly with the stroke/ IM swimmers, who all achieved multiple individual personal best times during her tenure. While at Clemson, Commons DiSalle set four school records, competed in the NCAA Championship meet four years in a row, was named on the All-
Atlantic Coast Conference Team three times, and was named to the ACC Honor Roll. She was also an NCAA Strength and Conditioning All-American in 2000. Commons DiSalle also competed in the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Prior to and upon graduation from Clemson, she returned to Cincinnati to assist coaching the Sycamore Flying Fish USS team. Commons competed for Sycamore High School where she was a three-time Ohio High School State Champion, and was recently inducted into Sycamore’s Hall of Fame. She earned a BS in economics from Clemson in 2003 and went on to get her MBA at Toledo in 2007. Commons DiSalle and her husband Eric live in Cincinnati.
DIVING COACH TORY MCKENNA
Tory McKenna joined the University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program in August 2012 after coaching for three season at University of New Hampshire. A two-time All-American and East National Championship qualifier in high school, McKenna earned
her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University. While diving for the Orange, she was a Big East finalist in the 3-meter dive and a Zone A Qualifier from 2005-2007. Additionally, she set the Syracuse 1-meter record and the Villanova pool record in 2005. McKenna double majored to receive a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, while graduating summa cum laud. Upon graduation from Syracuse University, McKenna came to New Hampshire and used her remaining year of eligibility to compete for the Wildcats as a graduate student. At the 2009 America East Championships, she placed third in the 1-meter dive and as a result was awarded the UNH swim team’s Coaches Award for her dedication, maturity and
leadership qualities. McKenna earned her Master of Science in Speech Pathology from UNH in 2010, while conducting research for acquired brain injury patients. McKenna began her coaching career at the Westford Swim and Tennis Club in 2001 and currently works with the New Hampshire based U.S.A. Diving Club and Charles River Diving North, where two of her divers won state titles in Division I and II in 2009. McKenna is also currently working for Peoplefirst Rehab in Maine. She is working toward her PhD in Speech & Hearing Pathology while coaching at Cincinnati.
