HOMESICKNESS: Students get homesick whether they admit it or not. Students should try to stay at UCCS most weekends. This is the best way for them to make friends, join organizations, and adjust to life away from home. Parents, remember when students do come home, your relationship with them and expectations of them (i.e., curfew) may need to be discussed. Also, they will probably bring every piece of their dirty laundry home when they visit. MAJORS: On average, a UCCS first year student will change majors two times during the course of their college career. Students should not feel pressured to select a major too soon. They will have experiences and coursework that will impact this important decision. A great resource is the Student Success “Most UCCS Center for academic students work advising and career planning. part-time. We

veryone is nervous at the beginning of a new experience. In order to make this year a good one, here are a few tips for students and parents. ALCOHOL: This has been a popular discussion topic at Orientation. No alcohol is permitted in Summit or Timberline Villages regardless of age. MAIL: Students love to receive mail, often checking their mailboxes 3-4 times/day. The Summit Village Front Desk is open daily from 8am-10 pm for students to pick up packages and ask questions. Parents, please send your child cookies, letters, money, toys and love. Timberline students receive their mail at Timberline. Packages are available from 5-9 PM daily.

MONEY: Parents, ten hours work with your child week. to develop money management skills. Workshops are also offered on campus. These skills will come in handy (for both of you) in the future. Most UCCS students work part-time. We recommend ten hours per week. WEEKENDS: What will students do with their free time? During Welcome Week there will be many opportunities for students to get involved. Throughout the rest of the year, there will be other events planned... intramurals, village social events, and ongoing campus activities. Parents, encourage your child to get involved and participate in events on campus.

elcome to UCCS! You are now part of a campus and housing community that is committed to sustainability. What does this mean? We strive to ensure the University community is working towards utilizing the resources of the earth in a way that ensures there is enough for the many generations of students to follow. This means consuming less and living life more simply and consciously. Residence Life efforts towards sustainability include recycling, energy and water conservation, the greening of residence halls and apartments, and annual events such as RecycleMania and the move-out Goodwill donation program. Consider the few simple ideas below. The UCCS Bookstore offers a good selection of sustainable and recycled products including power strips, fluorescent light bulbs, water bottles, clothing made from recycled soda bottles and elephant “poo” paper.
