Furtherdatarevealedinthe SeptemberRedCpollfoundthat,ofa staggering70%ofpeoplewhoare generallystrugglingtomakeends meet(thisfigurewasjust33%last year),anearmajorityintendtovote forSinnFéin.Consequently,itseems unlikelythattheirsupportwill significantlydissipateinthenear future,withMaryLouMcDonald’s frontbenchnowseriouslypreparing forgovernmentafterhavingcemented themselvesasapotentandoutspoken oppositioncauseforthelastseveral years,aidedbyanumberofeffective spokespeopleandastrictlyunified organisationalapproach.

AccordingtoDrReidy,SinnFéin’s recentsuccessesarenotmerelythe resultofpoliticalopportunismwhilea tenuousandfragmentedcoalition persists,butofalongertermstrategy andincrementalgains.Sheargues thatoverthelasttwentyyearsorso, thepartyhascreatedadistinctive profileforitselfbyvigorously presentingFiannaFáilandFineGael aspoliticallyinterchangeableand equallycomplicitinproducing,orat leastfailingtoalleviate,thecountry’s socialandeconomiccrises.Similarly, McDonald’spartyhassoughtto presentitselfasstronglyantiestablishmentandanti-elitist,with keyfigureandhousingspokesperson, EoinÓBroin,claimingthathisparty is“unashamedlypopulist”inEurope’s NewPoliticalEconomyPodcast, despitethenegativeconnotationsthat suchatermmayhave.Althoughits definitioniscontested,populismis generallydescribedasapolitical

TheresaReidyclaimsthereisnow clear“evidenceofpopulistattitudes” withinIrishpolitics, althoughsucha phenomenonisnotnecessarilynew, withFiannaFáilemployingsimilar tacticsinthe1990sunderTaoiseach BertieAhern.Inthesameinterview, ÓBroinlikenedhispartymovement tothelikesofSyrizainGreece, PodemosinSpainandtheUK LabourPartyunderJeremyCorbyn, wherebyalarge-scalegrassroots movementismobilisedwitha socialist, andinthiscase, republican, agendaatitshearttocombat conventionaleconomicliberalism.

Interestingly,thesepolling developmentspointtothepossible emergenceofIreland’sfirstreal ideologicaldivide-onebetweensocioeconomicclassesandgenerations.

Thiswouldintroducesomethingofa structuralclasselementintoIrish politics,aphenomenonwhichhas beenlargelyabsentinourcountry’s electoralhistoryduetothedefining Treaty-basedschismofour traditionallydominantparties.

Similarly,itispossiblethatIrish politicalculturecouldnowevolve fromaparochial,localisedstyletoa morenationalissues-focusedone, wherebyintergenerationalloyalties aredeemedlessrelevant.

Relatedtothisarenewideason Ireland’sfiscalmodelfromthe CommissiononTaxationandWelfare, particularlythedesignofitstax burdenandplanstoshiftitawayfrom incomeandontoassets.Withrecent findingsfromtheNationalYouth CouncilofIrelandrevealingthat70% ofyoungIrishpeople(18-24year olds)plantoemigrateforabetter qualityoflife,this,andother Commission-endorsedproposalssuch ashikinginheritanceandsavings taxeswouldappeartoalignwith muchofSinnFéin’spolitical messaging.However,therearealso severalinstancesofSinnFéin’stax plansclashingwiththeCommission, notably,theparty’soppositiontolocal propertyandcarbontaxesandits promotionofathirdrateofincome taxforearnerson€140,000and above.Asaconsequence,andasSinn Féinedgesclosertogovernment, thereisincreasingscrutinyontheir policyframeworkandaccusations fromopponentsthataspectsoftheir plansareinfeasibleanddisingenuous, suchasthepromisetobringthestate pensionentitlementagebackto65.

Returningtomoreelectoralissues,it isclearfromendlessSinnFéin statementsthattheirpreference followingthenextelectionwouldbe toformanewgovernmentwithout thetwolargecentre-rightparties, insteadoptingforaleft-wingcoalition ledbyMaryLouMcDonald. However,lookingatthemathematics andpracticalitiesofgovernment formation,thingsmaynotappearas

Whileitisduetobebrought forward, thisautumn, the Governmentcouldconsider bringingforwardthis legislationasamatterof urgency.Dr.DeSondy,who stronglyarguesforthe introductionofthislegislation conveysthat“gettingthehate crimelegislationthrough governmentwillpushthat structuralchange[toaddress racism]”.Thislegislationwill certainlyhopetoadoptazerotoleranceapproachtoracism.
