UCC DELEGATION TO TRAVEL TO COP27 SUMMIT IN EGYPT
WRITES JAMES KEMMY An envoy of students and academics from UCC will travel to the city of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt this week for the COP27 global climate summit. The twelve-day event, held from the 6th-18th of November, aims to coordinate efforts in the fight against environmental breakdown and serves as an urgent opportunity to promote the climate agenda on an international level.

The group, which comprises of six students and four faculty members from the college, will attend and participate in the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) over two weeks. This follows UCC’s presence last year at COP26 in Glasgow, at which it was the only Irish university delegation to be granted official Observer status, signaling its prominent green credentials and leadership efforts in
campus sustainability. Preparations for the visit were seen at last month’s Mock COP initiative, held on campus during UCC’s Undergraduate Open Day. This event was designed as a mini simulation of summit negotiations conducted by students whereby climate modeling software was used to facilitate emission reduction debates. Furthermore, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC), a crucial institutional agreement which has 197 member state signatories. Undoubtedly, the international context surrounding COP27 marks it as a highly consequential event. Following the Paris Agreement in 2015 which established a harmonised global effort to limit greenhouse gas emissions to 1.5 degrees Celsius and last year’s COP26 summit in Glasgow which fell short of the national commitments needed to achieve such a reduction, the forum in Egypt will
