KAREN YODER Head Coach 8th Year Cal State Hayward ’96

Bringing coaching experience from all levels of collegiate softball, Karen Yoder enters her eighth year as head coach at UC Davis. During her tenure, she has been instrumental in guiding the program through its transition from Division II to a member of Division I and the Big West Conference. Along the way, she has continued the program’s longstanding commitment to both academic and athletic excellence. In 2010, Yoder brought UC Davis to another milestone when the Aggies qualified for the NCAA Stanford Regional – the program’s first Division I postseason appearance. For her part, the 2010 season included two personal milestones. Yoder claimed her 100th UC Davis victory during the opening week, then picked up her 300th collegiate win on March 26 against Sacramento State. Yoder also kept busy off the field in 2011, being chosen to attend Dimension II of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in Chicago, Ill. In 2010, she chaired the NFCA’s All-America Committee and served a second term as that organization’s Pacific Region representative. Along with these positions, she was elected as a member of the NFCA Ethics Committee. Meanwhile, back at UC Davis she served as the head coach representative for the university’s Title IX Athletic Administrative Advisory Committee. Yoder previously earned a spot with the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in 2008. In 2007, just her third year with the Aggies and the final year of the school’s transition to Division I, she guided the team to a 31-27-1 record. That record represented a 16-win improvement from the previous season. The 2007 season also included a perfect record at the National Invitation Softball Tournament in Sunnyvale, Calif. A year later, the Aggies set a new school record with 60 stolen bases while finishing second in the Big West in strikeouts. The pitching staff was equally successful a year later, compiling the second-best ERA in the conference. It also once again ranked second in strikeouts. In all, Yoder has 338 career victories, picking up her 200th win early in the 2006 season. For reaching that milestone, she was honored by the Easton Victory Club at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Convention in December 2007. The team’s success on and off the field has resulted in several individual accomplishments in Yoder’s tenure. Prior to the Aggies move to the Big West, six players were named Division I Independent First Team All-Conference. In 2008, Jessica Hancock was named Big West First Team All-Conference while two additional Aggies received honorable mention. In 2010, Big West postseason honors for the Aggies included the top freshman field player, a first-team selection and four with honorable mention. Alex Holmes, who will serve as a student assistant coach in 2012, earned her third straight All-Big West first-team nod in 2011. She also captured the NCAA statistical championship in triples. Off the field, multiple Aggies have been honor with either ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District or Big West All-Academic.

Yoder came to UC Davis from Napa Valley College, where she served as head coach during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, compiling a 45-40 mark. She led Napa to the Bay Valley Conference title in her first season, earning BVC Coach of the Year honors. In 2004, Yoder guided the Storm to a runner-up finish in the league’s West Division. Prior to her stint at NVC, she served as head coach at North Carolina Greensboro where she guided the Spartans to a 31-27 mark in 2001 and a 35-30-1 finish in 2002. Yoder held her first head coaching position at Cal State Hayward (now known as Cal State East Bay), where she guided the Pioneers to an overall record of 80-56-1 in three years. She twice won Cal Pac Conference Coach of the Year accolades, posting a combined league record of 32-3 during 1999 and 2000. Yoder had served as an assistant coach at Hayward for two years. As a collegiate player, Yoder lettered three years as a catcher and designated player at New Mexico from 1991 to 1994. She previously played at West Valley College, where she was selected as NorCal Catcher of the Year in 1990. She won All-America honors as a catcher the following year at the ASA national tournament. After her collegiate career, Yoder played two years in the Women’s Professional Fastpich League as a member of the Georgia Pride and the Durham Dragons. In fact, she was a teammate of UC Davis All-American Trisha Reinhardt (Hayes). Yoder earned her B.S. in kinesiology/professional perspectives from Cal State Hayward in 1996 and added a master’s degree in that field in 1999. She served as an instructor both at Hayward and at Napa Valley College. Yoder and her husband, Shawn, have three children – Jenna, Michael and Natalee.

Assistant Coach 1st Year Cal State Hayward ’99

Assistant Coach 1st Year Cal State Northridge ’94

Stines joined UC Davis in the fall of 2011 after serving four years as head softball coach and senior woman administrator at Menlo College. She also held the post of California Pacific Conference president for three seasons. While at Menlo, Stines produced 17 All-CalPac performers, 26 Dean’s List honorees, three All-Region players, two Academic All-Americans and an overall, four-year team GPA of 3.02. Stines also had her lone senior win the Collis Steer Award in 2011, presented to the female studentathlete with the highest GPA. Stines came to Menlo after amassing an impressive playing and coaching resume. In 2006, she served as the head coach at Foothill College, where two of her players earned All-Conference honors. Prior to that, Stines served three years as assistant coach and one year as head coach at Cal State East Bay. She amassed a 105-36-2 record in those four seasons, including a 26-9 ledger as a head coach, while guiding one of her student-athletes to an NCAA Division III Independent Player of the Year award. Furthermore, she helped the Pioneers qualify for the NCAA West Regional in 2004. As a player, Stines twice earned all-conference honors at Moorpark College then was a two-time All-Far West selection (NCAA Division II as a junior, NAIA Division II as a senior) at Cal State East Bay, then known as Cal State Hayward. As a senior, she led the CalPac with a .614 batting average to earn conference Player of the Year honors. In just two years, Stines set the Pioneer season and career home run records. She continues to rank among CSUEB all-time leaders in homers (15), RBI (73) and batting (.387). After graduating from CSUEB, Stines served one year as an assistant for her alma mater under the direction of Karen Yoder. In that season, the Pioneers posted a perfect 15-0 CalPac record and finished as NAIA region runner-up. Stines then moved to the opposite coast to become an assistant at Elon and UNC Greensboro, respectively. On the ASA circuit, Stines competed on the California Stars tour to Appledoorn, Holland, where she batted .564 to earn tournament MVP accolades. She is also a two-time ASA All-American as a member of the HI Five Women’s Softball team where she won back-to-back national titles in two different classes. In 2011, Stines was inducted into the Fillmore High School Sports Hall of Fame for her achievements in softball and basketball. She holds a BA in sociology and a MS in kinesiology with an option in athletic administration.

2012 UC DAVIS SOFTBALL

Rios began her UC Davis coaching career after serving as an assistant at Sacramento City College from 2009-11. While coaching the Panthers, she assisted with infield, hitting and slapping instruction. Rios was also involved in fundraising and a facilities improvements. Sac City, which has four all-time state championships, has been regarded as one of the most successful junior college programs in California. Prior to Sac City, Rios was an assistant coach at Riverside Community College from 2008-09. In addition to her duties as a physical education professor, she served as the coach for infield and hitting. In 2009, Rios and the Tigers made the first state championship appearance in program history. From 2003 to 2008, Rios served as the associate head coach at UC Riverside. On the field, she assisted with the infield, hitting and slapping. Off the field, Rios held responsibilities with recruiting, fundraising and travel arrangements. She also had stops as an assistant coach at Cosumnes River College (2001-03) and San Jose State (1999-2001). Her extensive coaching career started at Santa Clara, where she served as head coach from 1997-99. Rios began her collegiate playing career at Sac City College, earning team MVP and all-state honors while helping the Panthers capture the Camino Norte Conference title and finish third at the state tournament as a freshman. In 1992, she helped Sac City to both conference and state championships, earning both All-CNC and all-state accolades. She also served as team captain and won her team’s Defensive Player of the Year award in each season. Rios transferred to Cal State Northridge in 1993, where she earned All-Western Athletic Conference honorable mention and helped her team win the conference title and reach the final eight of the Women’s College World Series. As a senior in 1994, she capped off her career by leading the Matadors to the another WAC championship and a secondplace finish at the Women’s CWS. Once again, Rios garnered All-WAC honorable mention and received her team’s Most Inspirational and Outstanding Defense awards. Following her collegiate career, Rios was drafted to play in the Women’s Professional Softball League. She also played on a women’s select team that competed against international teams such as China, New Zealand, Taipei and Canada.

ALEX HOLMES Undergraduate Assistant 1st Year UC Davis ’11

After assembling the most decorated career in UC Davis softball’s Division I era, Alex Holmes remains with the Aggie program to serve as a student assistant coach. Holmes earned a total of five All-Big West Conference awards, including four first-team honors. She made the league’s top squad as a designated player while adding honorable mention on the mound in 2009, claimed first-team acclaim at both positions as a junior in 2010, then picked up a first-team nod as a pitcher in 2011. Holmes was selected as the Big West Pitcher of the Year and added All-Pacific Region second-team accolades in 2010, helping UC Davis advance to the NCAA Regional. On the mound, the left-hander won 48 games – including a teambest 16 in each of her final two seasons – while fanning 549 batters in 705.0 career innings. She finished with a 2.87 ERA, ranking among the top four in the Big West as a sophomore (1.83) and senior (2.60). At the plate, Holmes hit .306 for her career, including .345 and .321 in her junior and senior years, respectively. As a senior, she led all NCAA Division I players with 0.16 triples per game (eight total). A graduate of JSerra Catholic High School, Holmes is completing her defgree in psychology at UC Davis.

Triple Threat Senior Alex Holmes led all NCAA Division I players with 0.16 triples per game, and tied Fordham’s Jocelyn Dearborn for the national lead in overall triples, earning her an NCAA statistical championship. Holmes, the only Aggie to start all 50 games in 2011, also led her team in hits (53), doubles (11), slugging (.503) and walks (21); while posing an another All-Big West Conference season as a pitcher. On the mound, she won 16 games with a 2.60 ERA, striking out 209 batters in 220.2 innings. Alex Holmes has stayed with the Aggie softball program to serve as an undergraduate assistant in 2011. Kathy DeYoung, Hall of Famer Former Aggie head softball coach Kathy DeYoung entered the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame during induction ceremonies last June. At the softball helm from 1979 to 2004, DeYoung guided UC Davis to a 777-402-2 record and 13 NCAA postseason appearances, including the program’s national title in 2003. She also served as the Aggie volleyball coach for 10 seasons (1978-87) and the women’s golf coach for three (2006-08).

Pitcher/Infielder • Fr. Bats/Throws: R-R Bakersfield, Calif. Stockdale HS ’11

In recent years, UC Davis has added several upgrades to its newly refurbished softball facility, located on campus at the corner of La Rue Road and Russell Blvd. In January 1999, La Rue Field was recognized as the “Softball Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association. Augmenting what was already considered one of the best playing fields in the region, grandstands, dugouts and permanent stadium fencing have been added, as well as new batting cages and storage facilities prior to the 1998 season. In 2009, a new scoreboard was installed. Future plans call for such amenities as concessions, a new seating configuration and permanent restroom/locker facilities. Previous work and upgrades resulted in the Aggies being selected to host six NCAA Division II West Region Tournaments from 1994 through 2002, one of few schools in the nation to have such an honor.

UC Davis comprises three colleges (Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Letters & Science), five professional schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine) plus the Division of Biological Sciences. With 103 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate programs, the university offers the most expansive and diverse range of academics among any of the University of California campuses. Additionally, students also have the opportunity to combine majors or customize their field of study by creating an individual major. For those interested in graduate degrees – whether it be a master’s degree or a doctorate – UC Davis offers advising services to help students craft their education toward those goals. An estimated 86 percent of UC Davis students applying to graduate schools earn acceptance to either their first or second choices.

COMMUNITY

With a population of approximately 60 thousand, Davis is widely known for being a safe, active and socially innovative community. The downtown area boasts a multitude of specialty shops, restaurants, theaters and art galleries; while the city’s numerous parks offer recreational opportunities for active students.

ACTIVITIES

On campus, UC Davis students can rally around the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, fraternities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government. For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue. In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the surrounding communities.

GETTING AROUND

Nestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sacramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean’s top beaches. Within Davis and its neighboring towns, both Yolobus and the student-operated Unitrans bus systems offer free transportation to registered undergraduates. The town boasts more bicycles per capita than any other city in the nation. More than 50 miles of bike paths make the entire town conducive to both riders and pedestrians.

CAMPUS LEADERSHIP LINDA KATEHI Linda Katehi became the sixth chancellor of the University of California, Davis, on August 17, 2009. As chief executive officer, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission. Chancellor Katehi (kah-TAY-hee) also holds UC Davis faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she chairs the President’s Committee for the National Medal of Science and is chair of the Secretary of Commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is a fellow and board member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of many other national boards and committees. Previously, Chancellor Katehi served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University; and associate dean for academic affairs and graduate education in the College of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and

FRED WOOD Fred Wood assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on August 1, 2007. Dr. Wood oversees programs and services that enhance the academic and personal development of students, including intercollegiate athletics. He also provides administrative leadership to a Division of over 50 student support programs and to a team of over 800 staff members. In addition, he manages a budget of over 30 million dollars. He advises the Chancellor on matters relating to students, enrollment, access, retention, and campus climate. Wood earned his bachelor’s and Ph.D. from UC Davis in Chemistry in 1980 and 1984. Soon after graduating, he began his faculty appointment in Chemistry and also served the College of Letters and Science as the Associate Dean, a position he held for 13 years. Most recently he served as the Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies and Interim Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. He is a 2003 graduate of the Harvard University Executive Leadership and Management Institute, and also a graduate of the University of California Management Institute. Dr. Wood is a member of several professional organizations including American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the National Association of College and University Busi-

UC Davis Chancellor computer science at the University of Michigan. Since her early years as a faculty member, Chancellor Katehi has focused on expanding research opportunities for undergraduates and improving the education and professional experience of graduate students, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups. She has mentored more than 70 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students in electrical and computer engineering. Twenty-one of the 42 doctoral students who graduated under her supervision have become faculty members in research universities in the United States and abroad. Her work in electronic circuit design has led to numerous national and international awards both as a technical leader and educator, 16 U.S. patents, and an additional six U.S. patent applications. She is the author or co-author of 10 book chapters and about 600 refereed publications in journals and symposia proceedings. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1977, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

Several priorities he is focusing on in Student Affairs include building bridges within Student Affairs and with academic affairs; increasing the diversity of our student population by reaching out to students who are disadvantaged and underrepresented; recruitment and admissions; increasing the number of students transferring to UC Davis from community colleges and helping with their transition; develop an inclusive community for all of our students; work to help new students effectively navigate the university; improve retention and graduation; improve accountability and transparency; improve student health; increase fundraising efforts to help support our units and their needs; maintaining affordability for students to attend college; and keeping up with the latest technology to provide our staff, faculty and students with the most up to date and accurate information. Dr. Wood continues to teach undergraduate students while serving in his administrative role and maintaining a focus on continually improving the services available to undergraduate and graduate students.

UC DAVIS ATHLETICS NONA RICHARDSON Nona Richardson was named Senior Associate Athletics Director at UC Davis in March 2007. She brings extensive experience to her role at UC Davis which includes overseeing compliance, student services and sports medicine programs, as well as sport supervision. Richardson has experienced intercollegiate athletics from a variety of roles, most recently during her tenure at Ball State, where she served as the senior woman administrator. There she oversaw daily operations for sports medicine, and strength and conditioning while also supervising seven sports, including women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. Her contributions at Ball State also included student-athlete services, community outreach programming, career development education, student-athlete awards, and other related areas while also serving as a Title IX and gender equity resource. Prior to Ball State, Richardson was Associate Director of Athletics and SWA at Valparaiso University for seven years, where she served in similar capacities while also serving as Compliance Coordinator for the 18-sport athletics program. Her duties also involved student-athlete eligibility, event management and other key administrative responsibilities. Richardson has served on numerous committees throughout her distinguished career, including the NCAA Division I Volleyball Committee (2000-02) and Volleyball

Interim Director of Athletics Officials Sub-Committee (2001-02). She has also been a member of committees for the Mid-Continent Conference and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), the latter for which she also served as a board member. Richardson has presented at several national conferences, is a member of NACWAA and the National Association of Girls and Women in Sports, and has won several awards including NACWAA’s Dr. Nell Jackson Award (2000). Her athletics administrative tenure was preceded by a volleyball coaching career that was highlighted by head coaching positions at Eastern Michigan (1987-95) and Valparaiso (1996-99) and an assistant coaching assignment at Kentucky (1984-87). Richardson was also an assistant coach at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in 1991. Richardson was a standout volleyball player at Michigan State (1978-81) where she was a team co-captain, MVP and a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-State team. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Michigan State in 1983 and her Master of Arts and Liberal Studies in Human Behavior and Society from Valparaiso University in 1999.

HOME OF THE AGGIES The palatial Activites & Recreation Center (ARC) offers a wide array of fitness areas, including fullsize basketball courts, a multi-use activity center for indoor soccer or hockey, a running/jogging track, weight rooms, aerobics facilities, squash and racquetball courts, and a rock-climbing wall. Additional amenities include a wellness center, student lounges and opportunities for conferences and special events.

THE PAVILION

HICKEY GYMNASTICS CENTER

The Pavilion, formerly known as Recreation Hall, serves as home court for UC Davis basketball, volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics, as well as concerts and special events. With a seating capacity of nearly 8,000, the Pavilion ranks as one of the largest on-campus arenas in Northern California.

The former Lower Hickey Gym, the first home of women’s athletics in the post-Title IX era, was converted to a first-class practice facility for the Aggie gymnastics team in 2005.

LA RUE FIELD Recognized in 1999 as “Softball Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association, La Rue Field hosted five NCAA West Region Softball Championships in the past decade. Recent additions include batting cages, covered dugouts and improved press areas.

SCHAAL AQUATICS CENTER The Ted & Rand Schaal Aquatics Center hosted its first event in January of 2004. The complex features an Olympic-sized pool, locker rooms, team rooms, office space and permanent seating for approximately 500 spectators. The aquatics center will allow UC Davis to host championship events, including the 2006 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championships.

TOOMEY FIELD & WOODY WILSON TRACK Built in the late 1940s, Toomey Field has hosted numerous championship events for football, track & field and lacrosse. During the 2000 Olympic Trials, standouts Marion Jones and Michael Johnson used the Woody Wilson Track as a practice facility.

Dobbins boasts one of the finest playing surfaces in Northern California. In 2002, the stadium was enhanced to include a press box, a renovated entrance and permanent concession/restroom facilities.

MARYA WELCH TENNIS CENTER Dedicated in April 2005, the Marya Welch Tennis Center represents an expansion of the former Hickey Tennis Courts. Recent additions include grandstands and canopied benches for the north courts.

AGGIE STADIUM

TOOMEY WEIGHT ROOM UC Davis student-athletes welcomed the expanded weight room, located inside Toomey Field. In addition to nearly tripling in size the previous facility, the upgrade also included all new equipment, restrooms and office space.

Aggie Stadium serves as the home facility for the football, womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lacrosse and womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s field hockey teams. The multiuse venue features an all-weather Sportexe playing surface, a first-class press box, full locker rooms, restrooms and concessions. The initial design has seating for 11,000 to 15,000 spectators, with an eventual build-out to as many as 30,000.

Michelle Roppeau Director of Athletic Academic Advising

UC Davis ranks among the leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and Academic AllDistrict/America honorees, and has claimed a record three winners of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Student-Athlete Academic Services deserves much of the credit for these accomplishments. The office started in 1988 with a single staff member serving as a centralized resource for academic advising, eligiblity information and campus referrals. The office has since expanded to include additional academic advisors, an athletic aid coordinator, an assistant eligibility coordinator and an administrative assistant. It is headed by Nona Richardson, senior associate director of athletics. The Student-Athlete Academic Services office provides a range of services to student-athletes on all 26 intercollegiate athletics teams, including assistance with course and major selection as well as interpretation and clarification of eligibility rules and issues.

UC Davis student-athletes typically have a minimum of three academic advisors: an athletic academic advisor assigned by sport, a college advisor, and a major advisor (if the student has a declared major). Although appointments with the athletic academic advisors are not mandatory at UC Davis, student-athletes might choose to see their athletic academic advisor for issues including: • General education (GE) requirements • Dropping/adding courses • Time management/study skills • Assistance completing the mandatory Academic Plan Form • Study hall for student-athletes • Personal issues that affect academic performance • Choosing a major/career • Declaring or changing a major • Exploration of opportunities beyond athletics • Preparation for graduate programs • Preparation and application for NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and other national awards

Jeff Hogan Head Athletic Trainer

Known collectively as “The Healer of Champions”, the UC Davis athletic training staff comprises five full-time certified athletic trainers, a full-time physical therapist/certified athletic trainer and approximately 24 student athletic trainers. Together, they are responsible for providing medical care to the 800-plus studentathletes that compose UC Davis’ 26 varsity teams. The student athletic trainers serve two to three years with the program, logging in more than 1,500

hours and gaining valuable clinical education in a hands-on environment. The internship is ideal for any student interested in a graduate program in athletic training, as well as any medical or allied medical profession. The ARC Pavilion training room contains extensive resources and equipment for the rehabilitation of injured athletes. The staff physical therapist is headquartered there as well.
