LETTER FROM THE VICE PROVOST AND DEAN Dear Friends, I am proud to share our Annual Report with you. This past year, we made significant strides toward our mission thanks to the dedication of our staff, faculty, students, and partners on campus and around the world. We recognize that this is a time of deep challenges and suffering for many people around the world. Global conflicts, natural disasters, and social injustices have intensified, reminding us of our shared responsibility to foster empathy, inclusivity, and support across borders. UC Davis remains committed to being a welcoming space for all, and we continue to promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion as central pillars of our work. This year marks a major milestone for us: 25 years of catalyzing global engagement at UC Davis. This report includes a few highlights on pages 5-6, and we have a special webpage with additional details, including a brief timeline of key accomplishments. In 2023-2024, we continued advancing our goal of providing Global Education for All and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by engaging more than 10,000 students in global learning opportunities, supporting faculty research and strengthening meaningful partnerships on campus, with surrounding communities and worldwide. We hosted a forum that brought together higher education representatives to discuss and share approaches to advance the SDGs, co-edited a book entitled Global Goals, Global Education: Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and jointly released a Voluntary Local Review with the City of Sacramento that aligns the SDGs with Sacramento’s city plans. Each initiative reflects our commitment to help create a more sustainable, interconnected world. We continued to host two exceptional global professional programs—the Humphrey Fellowship Program and Mandela Washington Fellowship—and provided critical services for over 9,000 students, faculty and researchers from over 100 countries. In partnership with the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and Universiti Malaya, we co-hosted the first inperson summit of the Asia Pacific Women in Leadership Mentoring Program at the University of Auckland. We also joined UC Davis leadership in delegation visits to Australia, Chile, and Hong Kong to facilitate and elevate equitable and transformative partnerships. This year, we celebrated the close of a successful multi-year fundraising campaign at UC Davis, which brought in $2.25 billion to support students, research, innovation and other academic efforts. We thank the alumni, friends, and community partners whose generosity contributed $7.02 million to Global Affairs, reaching 140% of our campaign goal! Thank you for joining us in our mission! I look forward to what the next 25 years bring for global engagement, and I am grateful for your continued partnership in building a brighter, more inclusive future for all. All the best,

Joanna Regulska Vice Provost and Dean - Global Affairs Distinguished Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies University of California, Davis 2

AIEA THEMATIC FORUM Higher Education Representatives Shared Approaches to Advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

UC Davis hosted an AIEA Thematic Forum on April 11-12, 2024, bringing together 40 UC Davis speakers and participants and 38 attendees from other institutions in the U.S. and other countries focused on integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals through their university’s internationalization efforts. The forum, “Integrating the SDGs in Comprehensive Internationalization Strategies: Approaches for Research, Teaching and Engaging Communities,” addressed the strategiclevel issue of how to integrate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development throughout university internationalization efforts, specifically via research, teaching and engagement with communities. The event, co-sponsored by UC Davis and the Association of International Education Administrators, or AIEA, was held at the UC Davis International

Center. The forum featured conversations among Senior International Officers (SIOs), international educators, faculty, researchers and administrators from universities around the world to share best practices and build a community among those in universities who are actively engaged in this global agenda. The event included welcome remarks from UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May and Vice Provost and Dean of Global Affairs Joanna Regulska, along with AIEA Immediate Past-President Jeet Joshee, Ambassador Ronaldo Filho Costa, Consul General of Brazil in San Francisco, and Earth University President Arturo Condo. The forum featured speakers from across UC Davis and other institutions and deep-dive strategy sessions for participants to hear examples of initiatives that promote SDGs in research, teaching and engagement with communities and students. As universities continue to adapt and evolve in an uncertain and complex world, this forum provided a crucial platform for fostering collaborations at every level to achieve shared, global goals for people, the planet and prosperity. Partnerships on campus, in communities and at the regional and international levels are crucial ingredients to advance innovation and shared solutions to these complex challenges.

‘Face to Face’: Strengthening Student Advising

Ask campus staff and faculty the best part about working at UC Davis and a common answer appears: the students. On an episode of “Face to Face With Chancellor May,” the podcast featured an interview with two campus leaders – Kayton Carter, Executive Director for Academic Advising Enrichment (Undergraduate Education) and Stephanie Zarate, Advising and Outreach Lead (Global Affairs) – about their roles in increasing advising opportunities for undergraduate Aggies to equip them for their futures.

Finding Global Community at UC Davis and Beyond

here, Jeff completed his Bachelor’s in Engineering in 2019 and further pursued a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering with a specialization in artificial and machine learning, graduating in 2023. Aspiring to help other students and professors by serving as a Teaching Assistant, he turned to Language and Culture Coaching within Global Affairs for help.

Supporting our International Community

Attending college for the first time can be an overwhelming experience for anyone. Attending college for the first time in a new country where you don’t speak the language adds an entirely new level of challenges. Fourth-year international student Rikiya Hatano is no stranger to this feat. Getting involved with campus programs, Hatano became a Global Ambassador Mentor Fellow in Spring 2023. Previously a mentee when he first entered UC Davis, Hatano found community through the program and later applied to be a mentor himself. Always eager to try new things, Hatano feels that the more he has gotten involved on campus, the easier his transition into life in the U.S. has been.

Enrichment and Opportunity through Language and Culture Coaching

As part of UC Davis Global Affairs, Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) is helping to build a campus community that includes students and scholars from over 100 countries and six continents. Each year, SISS serves more than 9,000 international students, faculty and researchers and their accompanying family members who come to UC Davis. With expertise in medical imaging, Emilie Roncali is one such international scholar. scholar. A leading biomedical engineer and physicist, Roncali focuses on medical imaging and the effectiveness of medical treatments for cancer patients.

Fostering Safe Global Travel Global Affairs continued to provide critical travel security resources and tips for UC Davis travelers— from pre-trip preparation and registration to real-time updates and responses—to mitigate the impact of unexpected weather, health, and security incidents. This year, we added resources for LGBTQIA+ travelers.. travelers Looking to expand his horizons, Zhengfeng “Jeff” Lai transferred to UC Davis, Davis, from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, as a senior undergraduate. TELLING GLOBAL STORIES Creating Meaningful Impact Within the UC Davis Community and Abroad

In college, it can be challenging to balance school, work, extracurriculars, and a social life. With rigorous academics and a wide range of work and extracurricular opportunities, UC Davis students are well-accustomed to the balancing act. Mahiri Comeaux is one of these multi-talented students who did not waste a single moment during his years at Davis.. Davis

With an emphasis in dermatology and wound healing, Lyle has an extensive background in the medical field and wants to use his knowledge to promote global health worldwide. Given his interests and background, Lyle became involved with the One Health Institute, which works at the interface of animals, people and the environment to solve complex health and conservation challenges.

Addressing Food Insecurity With UC Davis Student Farm

Experiences Abroad and At Home Valeria Becerra Angulo, a UC Davis student, has just one thing to say to students about studying abroad: “Just do it.” Valeria is an international relations major with a minor in French, Human Rights, and Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning. Originally from Mexico and having moved to America in her teens, Valeria knows how difficult it is to learn a new language and live in a new environment away from home. Fortunately, she has found a second home in Davis, but she wanted to continue her international experiences. 15

Ranked first in the country for agriculture and forestry studies, UC Davis has a unique relationship with agriculture. This is especially relevant to the university’s Student Farm, a designated teaching tool for students to practice sustainable agricultural practices and mitigate food insecurity

within the campus and Davis communities. Within this organization, the Student Farm focuses on several SDGs, including SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 4: Quality of Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Global Education for All Fellows partnered with the Student Farm to run the fourth “Student Farming Around the World” virtual symposium.

Checking In With Chancellor May: Preparing Students for a World of Opportunity Chancellor May’s August campus community email focused on the importance of global learning and the diversity of opportunities available to UC Davis students, faculty and staff. Global learning experiences, through domestic, online and abroad programs, help our community expand their knowledge about the world around them. These experiences enhance critical thinking skills

and encourage independence, which is important for academic, career and personal development. Chancellor May shared, “We will continue to welcome the world to UC Davis and bring UC Davis to the world. The exchange of ideas and learning of new cultures — all of which come from being a part of a global campus — are more important than ever.”
