WELCOME
Residents at the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency come from medical schools across the United States. Our residents forge close relationships with each other and with the faculty and staff, becoming a central part of our residency “family. While we certainly work hard together and value our roles as health professionals, we also take time to enjoy each other’s company, laugh, and to get know and appreciate each other as people. Our residency benefits from the leadership of innovative and nationally recognized faculty. While they have broad interests and academic pursuits, they are drawn together by the desire to do the best possible job of educating the next generation of family physicians. Our faculty members are here not only to provide a good education but to support and nurture our residents though the challenges of becoming excellent family physicians. 2
MEET OUR RESIDENTS RESIDENTS – PGY 3 Sydney Dittman, MD Denver Health/Montbello BA, Wesleyan University, MS, Georgetown University, MD, Baylor College of Medicine Houston, TX Hello! I was born in Houston, TX and after spending a some time away from the heat for college and grad school, I ultimately returned to study at Baylor College of Medicine. I studied Neuroscience and Religion at Wesleyan University in Connecticut with a particular interest in Tibetan Buddhism. Through a windy path that involved traveling in India and Nepal, learning about Tibetan Medicine and working on a farm, I ultimately decided to go to graduate school in Washington, DC to study Complementary and Alternative Medicine. My education there informed my interest in primary care and choosing a specialty where I could work with the whole person and over the course of an entire lifetime. During medical school, I spent some time in a free clinic for the homeless and developed an interest in working with the underserved and in better addressing the social determinants of health that have such a major impact on people’s well being. I continued to be interested in integrative medicine and the ways in which we in health care can support both physical and psychological health. I also developed a special passion for working with older adults. I knew when I entered medical school that I wanted to go into primary care, but as third year came to a close and it came time to solidify my choice of specialty, I felt confident that Family Medicine was the absolute right choice for me as it is a profession that lends itself to addressing social health and mental well-being in addition to physical. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my partner, Geoff, and our pup, Costume. I guess you could say I am an amateur fermentation experimenter / weird food enthusiast and Geoff and I have experimented with brewing several batches of mead. As I imagine most
in Colorado do – I am also a mountain/nature-lover and have tried my very best to spend all of my recent vacations hiking and backpacking in the mountains.
Leslie Guerrero, MD Denver Health/Montbello BS, Loyola University of Chicago; MD, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Kalmazoo, MI I am originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, home of Bells Brewery, Gibson Guitars, and Stryker Medical Instruments. I grew up with a physician father, nurse mother, and two older sisters who now practice nursing and physical therapy. So family certainly played a strong role in my decision to pursue medicine as a career. My interests in healthcare, and in particular in family medicine, grew during my undergraduate education at Loyola University Chicago. Volunteering both at home in the city hospitals of Chicago, and abroad in a small clinic in Cuzco, Peru, I got to see the direct impact primary care has on disadvantaged communities. The same can be said for my experience at Michigan State College of Human Medicine, where I spent much of my time training in Flint, MI, infamously known for the recent lead crisis. Having the opportunity to train at University of Colorado, not only do I get to join an already incredible group of healthcare professionals, but I get to explore my passion for full spectrum family medicine. For years, my husband and I have taken trips to Denver to go backpacking, hiking, climbing, snowboarding, skiing, and you name it. He’ll be joining me to train in Radiology at the University of Colorado, and we will certainly be taking advantage of all that Denver has to offer.
Kenny Herring, MD – UH Track University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine I grew up in beautiful Greenville, South Carolina at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains before heading off to undergrad at Clemson University (where my blood turned orange). After graduation, I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina for an opportunity with Teach For America and ended up teaching high school chemistry for three years. I then moved across the state to attend medical school at the University of North Carolina, where I found my home in family medicine. During my time in medical school, I helped lead a nutrition program for area elementary students, worked with a pipeline program to expose underserved high school students to opportunities within health care, and established a FMIG in Charlotte with a classmate. When I interviewed at the University of Colorado Family Medicine program, I truly felt at home— the residents and faculty were incredible, and I knew the training would foster my passions within family medicine. Outside of medicine, I enjoy great food, good breweries, movie nights, and backpacking. I am excited to explore all that Denver and Colorado have to offer with my wife and our dog, and I hope to knock out a handful of fourteeners and pick up snowshoeing during residency.

RESIDENTS Morgan Hungenberg, DO – Rural Track A.T. Still University of Health Sciences School of Osteopathic Medicine Arizona I am a native of Colorado, raised in Greeley for most of my life. I completed my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Denver. For medical school, I attended A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine Arizona. I loved living in Arizona and working in rural areas in the northern part of the state with several diverse groups of Native American populations. Though Arizona is an amazing state, I am very excited to return to Colorado! I first became interested in rural medicine when doing research exploring how to retain physicians in rural Colorado between my first and second years of medical school. One of the communities involved in the study just happened to be Fort Morgan. I feel like I already know the community and how great the people are. I can’t wait to practice and live in Fort Morgan as a family medicine resident and physician. As a Colorado girl, I love everything about the state from the mountains to the plains. When I am not working, I enjoy horseback riding, reading about historical events, and, of course, watching the Denver Broncos!

Naomi Malam, MD, MSPH – UH Track University of Massachusetts Medical School Hello! I am a Colorado transplant and thrilled to be out in the wild, wild West for residency. I grew up in Massachusetts, but ventured south for college at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana where I studied public health, international development, and French. I stuck around to complete a Master of Science of Public Health in Tropical Medicine & Parasitology before returning home for medical school at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester! I was elated to match in Denver with my boyfriend, RJ Luraschi, who is starting in the pediatrics program here. I fell in love with family medicine after working with homeless, immigrant, and otherwise marginalized populations and seeing how powerful robust primary care can be for those populations. I’m also very interested in addiction medicine and palliative care. In my free time, I love to hike, practice yoga, cook, travel (especially road trips!), and spend time with family, friends, and my cat, Chip!
Alisa Malki, MD – UH Track George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences I was born and raised in Redlands, California, and I am so excited to be in sunny Denver in this incredible program for residency! I received my undergraduate degree in International Development Studies from UCLA and did a post-baccalaureate, premedical program at Johns Hopkins University. Before starting medical school, I did HIV research at UCSF in San Francisco and in Uganda. I graduated from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in the Global Health track and have now officially moved across the country 3.5 times. Within health care, I have a strong interest in global health, preventive medicine, and health advocacy. When I am not in the hospital or clinic, I enjoy learning how to ride my new tandem bike with my husband and attempting to hike in altitude. I also love all things food-related like cooking and exploring Denver’s food (read: ice cream) scene. I am thrilled to be a part of University of Colorado’s program because of the passionate, kind, and interesting people and the program’s focus on making primary care better for everyone.
Anita Mathews, MD, MPH – DH Track Tufts University School of Medicine A native of Nashville, Tennessee, I am proud to come from a family of compassionate physicians who taught me early on that there is no greater privilege than to be fully invested in giving back to my community. I attended college at Brown University, where those family values merged with a passion for social justice and health equity. Before starting medical school, I worked as a health policy fellow in Washington, D.C. on issues of food insecurity and women’s health. I then received my medical and public health degrees from Tufts University, which fueled my drive to become a family physician caring for the underserved. My first visit to Colorado was for my interview at UCFMR, where I was delighted to find a group of residents, faculty, and staff who were devoted to championing comprehensive primary care. As part of the Denver Health track, I am eager to develop the skills not only to address my patients’ complex medical needs, but to attend to the social determinants of their health. I knew that this program would also prepare me to grow as a clinical educator and push for progress in our health care system. I strive to promote wellness not only for patients, but for providers as well, and fully believe that balance and gratitude are essential in the practice of medicine. In my free time you can find me cooking and baking with friends, painting, exploring coffee shops and restaurants, and taking in the Denver sunshine.
Cristina Rabaza, MD – UH Track University of Florida College of Medicine I’m Cristi Rabaza, and I am so excited to be training in Family Medicine at CU Denver! I was born and raised in Miami with a huge Cuban family and then headed five hours north for college at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where I majored in Journalism. I loved it so much that I stayed there for medical school, where I spent a lot of time learning about health equity and patient literacy, especially among Spanish-speaking patients, both locally in the college’s mobile bus clinic system, as well as globally, by participating in and leading our short-term medical outreach trip to the Dominican Republic during my first three years. It was my interest in patient-centered care and practice innovation that attracted me to UCDenver’s Family Medicine Residency program in the first place, and working alongside a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about primary care tells me I made the right choice! In my free time I enjoy weightlifting and riding my road bike. I’m excited to explore Colorado’s great outdoors as well as its many indoor breweries!
Morgan Schiller, MD – DH Track Saint Louis University School of Medicine A Pacific Northwest native and recent Midwestern transplant, I am thrilled to have landed at CU Denver! I grew up in the beautiful and eclectic (if wet) city of Portland and went to college at Western Washington University, where I studied biochemistry and Spanish and performed materials science research on biocompatible electrodes. Just after graduation, I married my high school sweetheart and we headed east for me to start medical school at Saint Louis University. During med school, I followed my passion for providing primary care to the underserved and improving community health: as a clinic volunteer and patient navigator, teaching preconception health, and establishing a free vaccine program at St. Louis’ low-cost Spanish-language clinic. I’m confident that the Denver Health track will give me the opportunity to provide high quality care to a diverse group of underserved patients both in the hospital and in clinic. This experience, combined with the teaching and resources here, will prepare me for a career practicing primary care medicine at a safety net clinic and doing public health advocacy. In my free time, I enjoy low-key outdoor adventures like hiking, canoeing, and camping. I can also be found singing around my house or with friends and hanging out with my husband, my friends, and my adorable dog and cat.

RESIDENTS Ashley Schinske, MD Denver Health/Park Hill BS, University of Detroit; MD, University of Michigan Medical School Paw Paw, MI Hello hello! My name is Ashley and I am originally from Paw Paw, Michigan- a town so nice they named it twice! I completed my undergraduate degree in nursing, while running track and field, at the University of Detroit Mercy. After undergrad, I began work as a medsurg nurse in Detroit, before heading off to medical school at the University of Michigan. For the first time in my life, I was missing the “athlete” part of my student-athlete identity. To remedy this, I started playing women’s tackle football for the Detroit Dark Angels. This turned out to be a wonderful decision, as I ended up meeting my wonderful wife, Lindsay. During medical school, I took a brief hiatus to become a NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and complete an Olympic sports strength and conditioning internship in the athletic department at the University of Michigan. Additionally, I managed to continue working as a med-surg nurse, followed by a stint in school nursing and then rounding out my career in geriatrics. Family medicine always appealed to me because of the breadth of medicine involved at the ability to emphasize preventive care across all ages. My specific interests within the field include geriatrics, LGBTQ health and preventive medicine. Outside of the clinical setting, I enjoy working out and sports of all kind, trying to cook and spending time with my wife and adopted malti-poos: Lily and Dexter.

Most importantly, I am blessed to share my life with my wonderful wife, Chelsea.
Jeff Utter, MD – UH Track University of Arizona College of Medicine Hi! I come from the state of Kansas, having lived in Kansas or Missouri most of my life. I obtained a bachelor’s in Microbiology, a bachelor’s in Latin American Studies and a master’s of Public Health from the University of Kansas. More recently, I finished medical school at the University of Arizona – Tucson in the lovely Sonoran Desert. I have experience in a variety of research settings, from virology to public health. I was also deployed as an Army medic attached to a combat support hospital outside of Tikrit,
Iraq in 2007. My medical interests include providing health care for Native American, migrant and refugee populations, addiction medicine, and small office procedures. In my free time, I like to play guitar, go to comedy shows, and make attempts at exotic cooking, among a number of other outdoor- and event-related activities. I am very excited and grateful to be a part of such an excellent family medicine residency program and look forward to providing my best care for our patients, and developing into the best physician possible, throughout the course of my training.
John Weeks, MD – DH Track Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine I’ve been a Virginia boy for most of my life but am thrilled to be able to come out and do my residency in Colorado! I studied at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, getting a degree in Neuroscience. I worked for four years as an interpreter and health promotor for migrant farm workers on the rural Eastern Shore of Virginia before coming back to study at Virginia Commonwealth University, where I received my medical training. Stemming from my prior work with farm workers, I take great pleasure in working with underserved and Spanish-speaking patients. I also enjoy sports medicine and procedures. I was very excited to come out to Colorado to enjoy the great hiking, mountain biking, and snow sports that the Rockies have to offer. I also enjoy playing soccer and basketball with friends. I’m excited to join the team and look forward to taking care of patients!
Alicia Wong, MD, MPH – DH Track Boston University School of Medicine I grew up in the beautiful coastal town of Westport, Connecticut, and am so excited to be out here for residency. I completed undergrad at Bowdoin College in Maine (GoUBears!), where I studied sociology and chemistry. After graduation, I moved to Boston to do health services research at Massachusetts General Hospital in The John D. Stoeckle Center for Primary Care Innovation. My projects included being on the CAHPS Quality Improvement Team for the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality; helping to open MGH’s Ambulatory Practice of the Future (APF); and studying how safety net practices improve their patient experience of care. During those formative years, I had amazing colleagues who were inspiring clinician-researchers, and I ultimately decided to pursue an MPH and MD at Boston University. While in grad school, I helped the APF apply for PCMH Level 3 accreditation, worked with BU’s Family Medicine Department to create a QI curriculum for medical students, and interned at the Center for Child & Adolescent Health Research and Policy to study healthrelated quality of life amongst adolescent and young adult tumor survivors. I chose the University of Colorado because of its dedication to teaching, the diversity of its clinical sites, and the ability to have continuity clinic at an FQHC. More importantly, the residents I met on my interview day seemed genuinely happy and told me that they felt well supported. My interests in medicine include care for people with disabilities/complex conditions, transitions of care, QI, patient safety, health informatics, and medical education. In my free time, I love to play the piano, hike/run, do yoga, cheer for Boston sports teams, visit the botanical gardens, and spend as much time as I can with family and friends. 7
RESIDENTS RESIDENTS – PGY 2 Sean Buck, MD – DH Track University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Having grown up in the Denver area, I’m excited to be back and enjoying all that Colorado has to offer. As an undergraduate at Colorado College, I studied anthropology and community engagement while running cross country and track and field. I then headed out to Moab, Utah to work at a free clinic doing volunteer recruitment and grant writing. I still serve on the board of the clinic, and I love spending time in the canyons of the Southwest. After Moab, I went north to Madison, Wisconsin for medical school where I was involved with student government and LCME accreditation. I’m interested in health policy, medical anthropology, addiction medicine, and health care administration. I’m excited to be back in my home state and I hope to find enough time to enjoy trail running, skiing, and backpacking throughout residency.
Kelley Collier, MD – UH Track University of Vermont College of Medicine Hello! Welcome to family medicine at the University of Colorado! As the daughter of a military physician, I moved many times and have had the opportunity to live in the Pacific Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, and now the West! Attending Wake Forest University for undergrad, I found my people in the art and anthropology departments. I developed an interest in medicine while working with an art therapist on the oncology floor of a children’s hospital in WinstonSalem, North Carolina and while researching domestic violence in migrant farmworker communities in Wilson, 8
North Carolina. After graduating from Wake Forest, I taught English to middle school students in Chateauroux, France, worked in outdoor retail in Seattle, obtained my Wilderness EMT certification, and helped train Haitian EMT students in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I completed my premedical coursework at Bryn Mawr College, where I also met my husband. After working at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for one year, we moved to Vermont to start medical school together. While in medical school, I enjoyed completing a narrative art and medicine project as a Schweitzer fellow, developing a capacity-building cervical cancer screening program in rural Tanzania, and working on a research project with two incredible mentors examining interpregnancy interval and uptake of family planning among pregnant women with opioid use disorder. I fell in love with family medicine for many reasons, including the philosophy of care, the potential to build relationships with patients over time, and the opportunity to work with a variety of patient populations and communities with different sets of needs. My interests in family medicine include women’s health, community medicine, adolescent health, preventive medicine, and addiction medicine. Outside of medicine, I enjoy trail running and cycling with my husband, drop-in community art classes, painting, spending time with my family, cross country skiing, and drinking good beer! I am thrilled to be at the University of Colorado and to be joining such a supportive community that’s passionate about primary care, and to have the chance to explore the West and Southwest in my time off!
Sydney Davis, MD – UH Track Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Medicine Although I was born in Aurora, I grew up in Virginia and consider Virginia Beach my hometown. Eating Filipino food, roller skating, playing Nintendo 64, and frolicking on the
beach with my two younger sisters are all fun memories from my childhood. After graduating Bayside High School (go Marlins!), I went on to study biology at Old Dominion University. Here, I discovered my passion for teaching as an athletic tutor and also got involved with fertility research. Outside of college, I volunteered as an EMT. It was this experience that helped me realize how much I value building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients and initially got me thinking about family medicine as a career path. Determined to combine my interest in teaching with my love of medicine, I attended Virginia Commonwealth University for medical school and was dually admitted into its Family Medicine Scholars Training and Admission Track (fmSTAT). Being part of fmSTAT allowed me to immerse myself in the wonderful family medicine community at VCU and ultimately solidified my desire to become a family doctor. I am so excited about coming full circle and returning to my birthplace to train alongside my amazing colleagues in such a supportive, innovative environment! Outside of the hospital, you can probably find me running around with my labradoodle (I used to be a dog walker), enjoying Denver’s awesome cuisine, or watching a scary movie!
Daffer Ghanim, MD – Rural Track James Cook University, College of Medicine and Dentistry Hello! I hail from beautiful Calgary, Alberta. I pursued a degree in Engineering at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. However, I have always been interested in health care and underserved medicine. While at McMaster University, I had the immense opportunity to travel to Australia, where I studied medicine through a unique program in Queensland that focused on full-spectrum rural, remote, and underserved medicine. During my time in medical school, I expanded my world
view by traveling all over Australia, living in different rural communities, working at the remote hospitals that serve these communities, and practicing full-spectrum rural medicine. My experience with these communities and their hospitals allowed me to find my passion for primary care and full-spectrum medicine. I then proceeded to complete the majority of my clinical years in Canada and the U.S. I went through multiple sub-internships at the University of Calgary, and I worked at The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Maryland, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and The University of Virginia in Charlottesville. I was also the Rotary International House Residential Manager, a PBL small group facilitator, an anatomy lab prosector, and Senior Associate Director and National Executive Director for the Australian Medical Student Journal. I feel very fortunate to join an academic program on the front line of primary care. The University of Colorado has innovative, exceptional training, and it is filled with incredible people. The University of Colorado was the perfect fit for me, and I am so happy to be in this residency program! My medical interests include full scope family medicine, rural/underserved medicine, research/academic medicine, and emergency medicine. In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and playing sports.
Swetha Iruku, MD, MPH – DH Track Tufts University School of Medicine Hi there! I am an East Coast native making the transition to beautiful, sunny Denver! I was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland to two immigrant parents from India. I spent most of my summers growing up traveling to India to visit family, which was crucial to my
development and my desire to pursue medicine and work with underserved populations. I went down south to Duke University for undergrad (Go Blue Devils!) where I majored in Neuroscience and minored in Cultural Anthropology and Global Health. I made my way up to Boston for medical school right after graduating from college, where I received my MD/MPH degrees from Tufts University. I found a home in family medicine during my clerkship years, and was thrilled to find UCFMR while on the interview trail. The Denver Health track fits perfectly with my dreams of providing medical care to a diverse, underserved, patient population while also tackling social determinants of health. In my free time, you can find me running with my dog and exploring Colorado’s breweries, restaurants, and its great outdoors!
Allie Johnson, MD – DH Track University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine Born and raised in beautiful Boulder, I am thrilled to be back home in Colorado for residency! I first left home for college at Stanford, where I majored in Human Biology with a concentration in health care in underserved communities and minored in African Studies. I spent most of my junior year in Cape Town, South Africa, where I discovered my passion for maternal and child health while working at a community-based organization serving local mothers. After graduating, I stayed on at Stanford for a year, teaching in the Human Biology Core before embarking on the next big adventure: moving to Philly for medical school. I fell in love with family medicine after doing a rural clerkship rotation in Lancaster and remained consistently inspired by the field’s genuine commitment to caring for vulnerable populations. For residency, I sought out programs that shared my values: a robust commitment to care for the underserved, excellent training in maternal and child health, and the
development of residents as teachers and leaders – and feel incredibly lucky to have found a perfect fit right here at home! I’m so excited to spend my non-hospital hours with my family, catching some powder turns, climbing hills on my bike, and drinking excellent Colorado craft beer.
Katharine Kelly, MD – DH Track University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine and Public Health I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. After high school, I ventured east for my undergraduate degree at Amherst College in Massachusetts, where I studied French and anthropology and played ice hockey. I attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and had the good fortune to participate in the Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH) track. As a medical student, I was active in Medical Students for Choice and the Wisconsin Medical Society’s Legislative Council, and I worked on a population health data project at Milwaukee’s Center for Urban Population Health. I’m excited to live in the beautiful mountain west and to be a part of this wonderful residency program. My clinical interests within family medicine include women’s health and reproductive health care, refugee health, pediatrics, procedures, and health equity. I remain interested in the intersection of health care, policy, advocacy, and politics. Outside of medicine, I love to ride my bike, hike, boogie board (when possible), read non-medical books, and spend time with my husband, friends, and family.

RESIDENTS Eric GR Kim, MD, PhD – UH Track Wayne State University School of Medicine Home for me has been many places in the U.S. through the years. More recently(ish), I completed high school in Northwest Ohio and college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The nine years I spent in Detroit working on my MD and PhD (in biomedical engineering) was one of the longest periods I’ve ever spent in one place! There I worked with homeless and drug rehabilitation patients in a volunteer clinic, with an evidence-based, student-run clinical question journal, and with the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians as a student representative on the education committee. I also got to engage with my love for medical technology, completing my dissertation in medical microtechnology in the College of Engineering. My time there had a profound impact on me, and wherever I find myself, I will always be a Detroiter at heart. My passion for medical technology makes me a bit of an oddball. That said, I see this interest in a similar light as the central tenants of family medicine. Alongside our skills or our relationships, our tools play a large part in shaping our practice. The more we experience firsthand, the greater and more whole our perspective, and the more we can help our patients. For residency, more than anything else, I wanted a program that reflected this interdisciplinary attitude, and I am so happy to have found it here! I am excited to work in the complex, progressive environment that is the Denver community and to collaborate with the diverse and exceptional people who make up this program. I’m also eager to engage with the local historical martial arts and fencing communities, since there’s no denying the nerd inside me.

Franklin Niblock, MD, MPH – UH Track University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Hi All! Congratulations on your decision to become a family physician and thanks for your interest in practicing medicine in Denver. I am originally from Concord, North Carolina and I attended the University of North Carolina (UNC) for undergrad (Go Heels!). At UNC I majored in Health Policy and Management through the Gillings School of Public Health and spent a lot of Saturday mornings building homes with Habitat for Humanity. My education in public health fostered an interest in primary care and, specifically, underserved care. After undergrad, I worked for the North Carolina Office of Rural Health before returning to UNC for medical school. My time with the Office of Rural Health showed me the impact a family physician can have in a rural community and ultimately prompted me to pursue a MPH, as well as help start a service year organization for recent college graduates interested in underserved medicine. I was fortunate to be educated in North Carolina surrounded by strong primary care role models, and I was drawn to Colorado for similar reasons. The University of Colorado has an incredibly robust Department of Family Medicine filled with supportive faculty and residents. Each person I met on interview day was someone I felt I wanted to spend time with inside and outside of the clinic. Not to mention, Denver is a short drive away from some of the most gorgeous country in the United States. In my free time, I enjoy hiking and camping with my wife, Shelley, and our Labrador companion, Julep. When Julep and Shelley are busy, I try to explore the trout streams of the Rockies.
Lauren Oberle, MD – UH Track University of Colorado School of Medicine I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri (Go Cards!) and went to the University of Missouri for undergrad where I studied biology and Spanish. I came to the University of Colorado for medical school after a gap year working as a scribe and traveling, and I have loved being in sunny Denver. I always thought I wanted to work in some sort of primary care because of longitudinal patient care and the variety. I also became interested in preventive care through healthy lifestyles and empowering patients. During medical school, I worked with a local NGO to teach health care workers in rural Peru; helped organize preventive health lectures; and helped teach a student-run, medical Spanish class. My special interests are sports medicine, women’s care (especially gynecology), and geriatrics. The CU Family Medicine Residency program was exactly the fit I was looking for in a residency: innovative, integrated, and intellectually challenging with diverse patient populations. Plus, I get to work with an awesome group of people. Colorado has also been the perfect place for all of my favorite activities outside of medicine: running, hiking, biking, skiing, eating ice cream and just being outside in the sunshine. I cannot express how happy I am to get to join this amazing program, and I am excited to see where the training takes me!
Riley Smith, MD – DH Track Ohio State University College of Medicine I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, then headed to Chicago for undergrad at Northwestern University. There I majored in gender and sexuality studies as well as global health, a combination which helped spark my interest in LGBTQ health and health care for the underserved. I attended The Ohio State University for medical school (#GoBucks), where I was heavily involved in a student-run free clinic and the LGBT & Allies in Medicine student group. I have also done global health work in South Africa, Tanzania and Thailand and spent part of M4 year biking across the U.S. to raise money for global health charities. I fell in love with primary care and family medicine because it offers the opportunity to connect with and care for patients of all backgrounds, to improve health in communities, and to practice full scope medicine. I am particularly passionate about transgender health and immigrant and refugee health, and am ecstatic to have matched at the University of Colorado’s Denver Health track to continue to work with these populations. Outside of medicine, I love all things outdoors – hiking, camping, running, biking, breweries with patios, etc. My wife (an OB/Gyn intern!) and I are so excited to be here and can’t wait to explore everything that Denver has to offer!
Alexandra Targan, MD – UH Track Wayne State University School of Medicine Hailing from the great state of Michigan, I have spent my entire life in and around Detroit and its many lakes. In college, I studied environmental health and sustainability at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and learned about the vital role that our surroundings play in our health. Completing my medical school training in Detroit opened my eyes to the far-reaching impact that the primary care physician can have on a community, even with limited resources, and especially through prevention and education. I was inspired by astute clinicians who not only knew how to diagnose and treat complex medical cases, but also how to care for patients without access to transportation, stable income, housing, or support systems. I was looking for a specialty with a similar appreciation for social determinants of health, and Family Medicine was a clear choice. Denver was the first city I visited on the interview trail, and I quickly fell in love with the neighborhoods, the environmental conscience of the community, and the emphasis on living healthfully to prevent diseases that ravage our nation. The University of Colorado’s program was at the top of my list because of the concrete steps they are taking to improve primary care delivery, the comprehensive training they offer, and the bright, warm-hearted people I met on my interview day.
Caroline Vu, DO – Rural Track West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Hi! I am a first generation American born and raised in Fairfax, Virginia. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine after spending several years working with a student-run free clinic on the Mattaponi Indian Reservation. I completed my medical education in West Virginia. Being fully immersed in rural medicine helped me decide that becoming a primary care provider in a rural area was right for me. What I look forward to most about being in the Rural track is the patient population I will serve and learning more about rural medicine in Colorado. I intend on joining the Indian Health Services post-residency (location TBD!). My medical interests are family planning, LGBTQ health, American Indian health, rural medicine, and addiction medicine. My hobbies are being outdoors, backpacking, reading, and hanging out with George, my 17-year-old Congo African Grey parrot. A fun goal I set for myself is to become a licensed falconer at some point during residency. I am so excited to be part of such an innovative Family Medicine program and look forward to starting the next chapter of my life in Colorado!
Within health care, I am particularly interested in women’s health, medical education, health equity, integrative medicine, and preventive medicine. Outside of the hospital, you can find me playing soccer or exploring national parks to offset my foodie finds, recycling, or spending time with the people I love. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to train with leaders in primary care innovation who also love staring at mountains and enjoying local brews as much as I do. 11

Hello. I’m a Midwestern gal, born and raised in Minnesota. My grandmother, who was so committed to healthcare that she moved to the US from Chile to become a nurse, was always my inspiration for choosing a career in medicine. She was passionate about working with underserved communities and addressing healthcare inequities, and I must say she passed that on to me. I went to the University of Minnesota for undergrad (Go Gophers!) where I double majored in Genetics, Cell Biology, & Development and French. I then became a Double Gopher when I attended the University of Minnesota for medical school. I am so happy to have found myself in Denver- on interview day I was blown away UCFMR’s commitment to innovations in primary care delivery, physician wellness, and advocacy for the communities they serve! My interests within medicine include full spectrum family medicine, refugee health, treatment of substance use disorder, LGBTQ+ healthcare, HIV primary care, medical education, and quality improvement. Outside of medicine I enjoy spending time with my dog Canon, performing abysmally at trivia and karaoke, practicing aerial silks, and snuggling up to watch a horror movie.

Hello! I am new to Denver and so far I am loving it! Originally from Maryland, I stopped in Memphis, Tennessee, for my undergraduate degree then returned to Maryland for medical school. At Rhodes College I served as the Director of our all campus community service program and made alternative spring break trips to the Dominican Republic. During medical school I continued to foster my many interests, especially mentorship, underserved and rural medicine. I was a pen pal & mentor for multiple area high school students who were initially in danger of not graduating. Separately, I did two rotations with the Indian Health Service, in Chinle, Arizona, and Zuni, New Mexico— which were some of my mostly influential experiences to date! I was also the founder and president of our school’s Latino Medical Student Association. I was drawn to family medicine because I hope to practice in a rural area, and I think family docs are best equipped to fulfill the various needs of these smaller communities especially with the versatility and adaptability in family medicine. UCFMR was attractive because of the robust academic training that is built in to the similarly robust Rural Health Track. I also fell in love with the Fort Morgan community during my interview, and am excited to be serving them! This program also engages my interests in LGBTQ+ health, community engagement, and complementary and alternative medicine. Outside of clinic I enjoy cooking, reading (especially unpublished works), national parks, beaches and collecting holiday decorations.
Hey, my name is Ally from the great city of Boston. I attended college at Emory University in Atlanta and studied Anthropology & Human Biology, and Music. After graduation I worked as a project manager at the EMR company, Epic. During these two years, I developed a passion for understanding the connection between healthcare systems and clinical medicine, motivating me to pursue my MD/MBA at Tufts. While I Tufts I helped lead a student-run organization called Medstart, which promoted building multi-disciplinary relationships in healthcare. Our annual conference brought together bench researchers, physicians, healthcare executives, and students and provided them with a forum to discuss how we can all work together to benefit healthcare. At Tufts, my research focused on evaluating the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) to see if the measures are evidenced based and patient centered. I fell in love with FM at UCFMR was because of their dedication to EBM as well as their emphasis practice transformation. My interests in FM include quality improvement, population health, reproductive health, addiction medicine, academic medicine and mentorship. I also love music, doing anything outside including running/ hiking, Broadway musicals, cooking and eating, bodies of water, bars and doing barre.

Princeton, NJ I was born in California, raised in New Jersey, and have now settled somewhat in the middle here in Denver. I attended college at Rutgers University where I studied animal science and had the pleasure of working on the Rutgers farm. I realized I would be remiss to not work closely with people in my career, and so switched to human medicine. After a year of coordinating clinical trials in Princeton, NJ, I enrolled at the Rutgers RWJMS. My passions during medical school were in my extracurricular activities. As class president, I had the opportunity to cultivate a community focused on wellness, professionalism, and safety in the clinical learning environment. I also worked at our student run free clinic and created a prescription produce program that provides patients with vouchers to use at farmers markets. Importantly, I was the founder of my school’s cheese club. I chose family medicine because of my love for people and providing care within patient’s social context. The UCFMR program had everything I was looking for: a wellbalanced socially-oriented academic program with plenty of opportunities for OB, procedures, sports medicine, and a supportive and flexible faculty that was willing to engage in my interests. These interests include community health, social determinants of health, sports med, and health policy. Outside of medicine you can find me playing squash, running, gardening, and enjoying local flora and fauna.
Hi there! I’m so excited to be in Denver and part of the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency. I’ve spent most of my life on the plains, and being up here in the mountains has literally left me breathless. I grew up in Kansas, but went to college in Tulsa and stayed in Oklahoma for medical school, where I also got the opportunity to study public health. In medical school, I spent some time working with local nonprofits doing women’s and sexual health education. I also got really interested in academic medicine and medical education, as well as incorporating public health and medicine. I’m glad to be a part of a residency program that has a strong academic foundation and faculty that will support my interests. Outside of medicine I spend my time hiking, cycling, cooking, and running a moderately successful cat Instagram.
Hi everyone! I grew up in California (West Coast, Best Coast) and went to Stanford University, where I completed my BS and MS in Biology, but was NOT pre-med. Thinking I wanted to work in philanthropy or public health, I spent a year working at a public health non-profit and then moved to San Francisco to work in economic consulting. During this time, I became more aware of and invested in the health care concerns of my community – the San Francisco Bay Area. From healthcare for the homeless, to mental health care, to serving communities of color and immigrants, threads from my undergraduate career and my work experience came together to point me in the direction of direct patient care – medicine. I moved to Boston to complete a Masters in Psychiatric Epidemiology before ending up in the great state of Michigan for medical school. Clinically, I am interested in urban underserved care, particularly in communities of color and immigrant communities. I am passionate about mental health, women’s health, and LGBTQ care. Lastly, I hope to leverage my background in economic research and epidemiology to contribute to strong, evidence-based policy to promote the welfare of families and communities throughout the US. I am proud to train at the UCFMR, which brings together strong academics, primary care innovation, and deep community engagement to train excellent family physicians and provide excellent care. Outside of medicine, you can find me devouring novels, hiking, biking, Spikeballing, and planning my next overseas vacation.

Hello, I’m Sean and I spent the formative years of my life in NYC. Before that, I grew up and went to school in Utah. There, I was a competitive swimmer and when I stopped swimming competitively, I coached high school swimming. After that, I moved to Washington D.C. to work at the National Cancer Institute where I worked on an HIV vaccine. Finally, I moved to NYC to start the MD/PhD program at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Hi there! I am originally from Western New York where I spent many glorious years singing classical Indian music, playing lots of board games, and just generally pulling off shenanigans. Fast forward several years and I am still doing all three of those things, but I am also lucky enough to be practicing family medicine. My undergraduate degree was in anthropology which I believe fits perfectly with the patient and community-centered nature of primary care.
It was in NYC that I discovered myself and my true passions in life and medicine. At school, my PhD focused on the effects of diet upon the gut microbiota and health. My research opened the door to family medicine for me because I saw how important diet is upon health and it gave me the time to volunteer in our student-run primary care clinic. Personally, I’m passionate about LGBTQ+ history, cooking, baking, backpacking, and hiking. In NYC, I was able to explore the thriving LGBTQ+ scene and became the mother to the House of Cocker.
Throughout my journey through medicine my interests/ projects have centered around geriatrics, medical anthropology, interprofessional education, refugee wellbeing, and recognition of bullying and child abuse. One of my favorite aspects of this program is that there are many opportunities to expand my interests and I look forward to learning more about and engaging with the communities here in Denver.
Now, I’m here at UC Denver in the University Track. I chose to come here because I’m very interested in continuing clinical microbiota research with researchers at CU Boulder and performing research in practice transformations. As an MD, PhD, I want to bring more research into primary care and use my research to change healthcare policy.

My husband and I drove all the way from Syracuse, New York to Colorado when I started residency and we are loving it here. We are outdoorsy people and enjoy hiking, camping, star/moon gazing, playing Kan-Jam, dancing, you name it! We will probably try anything at least once. Even though we miss our families back out east, we are in love with the beautiful mountains and I am thrilled to be at UCFMR. My co-residents are incredibly kind and intelligent and I cannot wait to see how we all grow during residency.
San Diego, CA Hi y’all! My name is Jeremy. I am originally from San Diego. I went to UCLA for undergraduate and moved to Texas Tech University for medical school. My interests in medicine include primary care innovation, community engagement, sports medicine and palliative care — to name a few. I love to cook (especially Korean food), hike, play basketball, snowboard, read, write and go to concerts (most recently Local Natives). The University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency has some of the best opportunities for community engagement, primary care innovation, health and public policy. I’ve also already made some amazing friendships with my fellow residents and faculty, and am stoked to be here!

I am from the San Francisco Bay Area, and went to Washington University in St. Louis for undergrad where I studied Engineering, Psychology and French. Shortly after graduation, I went to Uganda for my Peace Corps service, and I taught health topics in elementary schools with a focus in sexual health and reusable menstrual pads. Through this experience, I realized my future career path in medicine. Once back stateside, I went to Scripps College for my post-baccalaureate and DGSOM (UCLA) for medical school. Along the way, I married a Colorado native, who just couldn’t wait to get back to the mountains (he’s very happy to be here). We have a 6-month-old daughter and a dog. We like to go out hiking and are excited to explore the trails here. I also like running, yoga and eating. I am hoping to pick up a few winter hobbies too. I am so excited to be part of the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency (UCFMR) family! I chose this program for many reasons, including: ample teaching opportunities, sites at academic and county hospitals, an innovative clinic environment and the ability to pursue my interests in women’s health and adolescent health. However, I ultimately chose UCFMR because of the supportive, welcoming, wonderful people I met on my interview!
Hello! After many years on the East Coast and a stint in the Peace Corps in Guinea, I am thrilled to be starting my residency here in Colorado and am so excited to begin the process of becoming a great family doc. As an intern on the Denver Health track, I am enjoying the chance to learn from our very diverse patient population in a supportive and vibrant clinic community. I am also interested in federal and state level health policy and am already benefiting from our faculty’s incredible primary care research and advocacy activities. I am interested in primary care payment and delivery reform, as well as the development of more equitable health systems that better serve vulnerable populations. Aside from work, I love to get outside as much as possible and have already had many chances to explore beautiful Colorado.
Daniel (Danny) Wells-Prado, MD Denver Health
Molly to Denver. I became interested in medicine early on because of my fascination with the complexity of the human body and the personal relationships with patients. Family medicine was a natural extension from these interests and I never looked back. In college I studied Genetics and Spanish while volunteering in FQHCs and participating in a semester-long program about inequality in the United States. After college I moved to Philadelphia for the National Health Corps/ AmeriCorps program and served in a FQHC performing health insurance enrollment (yay Medicaid expansion!). I returned to the Twin Cities for medical school where I was active in our White Coats for Black Lives chapter and LGBTQ+ student group. Through RPAP I spent nine months in a rural critical access hospital during my third year experiencing the full-scope practice of family physicians. My interest in the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency stemmed from the hybrid of academic and community settings and opportunities to learn full-spectrum family medicine with passionate faculty. I was also drawn to the staff who work at Lowry Family Health Center and Denver Health, especially their collective passion for underserved healthcare. I also cannot wait for opportunities to work with the LGBTQ+ community and the ability to explore my interest in HIV primary care. Outside of medicine, I enjoy running, television dramas, kayaking, and exploring the world of Denver ice cream (Smith+Canon the best thus far).

I grew up in Massachusetts in a big family (eight siblings!) and completed my undergraduate as a psychology major at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. I have dual interests in research and clinical work with a focus on management of chronic illnesses and behavioral health. I’ve worked on a variety of clinical research trials at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as well as the University of Washington in Seattle before moving to Colorado to complete a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology at the University of Colorado Denver. I’ve lived in Colorado for six years and love it! From hiking to skiing, to snowshoeing, to trail running, I continue to enjoy the Rocky Mountains with my husband and dog. This year I’m also looking forward to starting a family (baby due in October!) and finishing my dissertation.

Daniel Kortsch, MD As an interim CMIO and physician, I provide medical care for patients of all ages while leading multiple projects at the departmental, enterprise and state levels. As a practicing family physician, I directly care for outpatient and hospitalized patients who are primarily comprised of the medically underserved populations of Denver. Within this role, I have been recognized many times for my quality, productivity and innovation. Within Denver Health, I work closely with our medical staff to coordinate multiple enterprisewide projects. As the lead physician for clinical informatics in ambulatory care, I helped coordinate the implementation of our medical software system, as well as pioneer the innovation that accompanied such a massive project. As one of the principal clinical faces of technological medical innovation, I coordinated much of the required change management while facilitating business strategy in executive-level committees. I apply this population health management expertise as a state leader in tobacco control where I manage or chair a variety of multimillion dollar state- or system-level interventions around tobacco education and cessation through my work with Denver Public Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. In these roles, I regularly work with elected members of the Colorado Senate and House and have provided expert opinion on state legislation. As an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, I teach medical knowledge and skills in multiple clinical arenas. Through my directorlevel roles, I coordinate components of their education and directly oversee the clinical practices of medical residents and medical students. 29
