SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP INTRODUCTION Welcome to the University of Colorado Sports Medicine Fellowship located on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus - the largest academic health center in the Rocky Mountain region. The Sports Medicine Fellowship received Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation on July 1, 1998. It is a 12-month program and is currently limited to one fellow per track.
OUR MISSION: The Sports Medicine Fellowship program will provide Colorado, the nation and the world with leaders of excellence in: • Education – through the provision of sports medicine educational programs to medical students, allied health students, graduate students and house staff, practicing health professionals and the public at large • Research – through the development of new knowledge in the basic and clinical sciences, as well as in health policy and health care education;

DENVER HEALTH WINTER PARK MEDICAL CENTER — WINTER PARK, CO This medical center is located at the base of the Winter Park Ski Resort (about 1.5 hours from Denver). All acute trauma and medical injuries are triaged by ski patrol and then brought into the medical center, as needed. The management of acute trauma and orthopedic injuries the fellows see and treat during this month are invaluable. There are also many acute medical issues that the fellow may see including acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, high altitude pulmonary edema, and many others. There will always be direct supervision by 2 attending physicians. Prior to their rotation, the fellows will complete Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training.
The University of Colorado Sports Medicine Center is a referral site for primary care providers at the University of Colorado and in the community. Services such as musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided injections (dedicated ½ day every week), management of acute/chronic sports injuries, consultation with orthopedists, PM&R specialists and athletic trainers, and other procedures such as Tenex, PRP, medical bike fits, and exertional compartment pressure testing are incorporated into the training experience. Shared training at this site occurs with medical students, orthopedic, family medicine, pediatric, physical medicine and rehabilitation residents and orthopedic sports medicine fellows.
The UCH AF Williams Family Medicine Center is a primary care clinical site for the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency program. There will be opportunities to work with primary care sports medicine faculty at this site during dedicated sports medicine clinics. If the fellow has a background in Family Medicine, they will complete their continuity clinic at this site. If the fellow’s background is in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or PM&R, the continuity clinic will be arranged at a UCH site according to prior training. All of these training sites are shared with medical students and other residents. Time: 1 half day/week

This is a longitudinal experience, which occurs throughout the year. Peak season is the fall season. The fellow will work closely with the football, volleyball, and lacrosse athletes throughout the year, but will see athletes from all sports in this training room clinic. Clinic time allows the fellow to follow-up with acute orthopedic and medical issues in CU athletes. Time: 1-2 half-day/week

FELLOWSHIP CURRICULUM PRIMARY CARE & PEDIATRIC SPORTS MEDICINE The overall educational goals of the Sports Medicine fellowship encompass four, equally important areas: General Knowledge, Exercise, Sports Injuries and Team Physician experience. The longitudinal curriculum is designed to provide knowledge to evaluate and treat sports medicine related injuries while becoming an active professional in the field of Sports Medicine. Fellows will work one-on-one with faculty in the following locations over the training year. The fellowship’s two tracks share curricular similarities which are detailed below. But, they also have separate and distinct components that make them unique. And, both tracks with keep you busy with a full schedule of opportunities for Fellows throughout the year. CONTINUING EDUCATION/CONFERENCES Fellows will have the opportunity to attend three national conferences as part of their fellowship training and is expected to present a case and research project at the national conferences. DIDACTICS The didactic component of the sports medicine curriculum is presented at conferences, journal clubs and continuing medical education courses over the 12-month curriculum. The fellows teach at many of these conferences, especially at the Wednesday morning sports medicine conferences at CU. They are required to do at least 4-6 presentations at different conferences over the course of the year. All required national conferences and local conferences are paid for by the program. Attendance is mandatory at required conferences.
SPORTS MEDICINE SCHOLARLY/ RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS Fellows are required to complete an original research project and present their work at one of the national sports medicine conferences — AMSSM or ACSM Annual Conference. They are also encouraged to participate in other research activities and have at least one publication by the end of their fellowship year. Fellows are required to present an interesting sports medicine case at the AMSSM and ACSM Annual Conferences. In addition, fellows are required to teach didactics sessions for medical students, residents, and other sports medicine faculty/fellows.

SPORTS COVERAGE Fellows have the opportunity to be involved in team sports coverage and major endurance race events. Fellows’ sports coverage includes Division I Collegiate football, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, and gymnastics depending on each track. Fellows take a leading role with the University of Colorado women’s volleyball and lacrosse and the University of Denver women’s soccer and volleyball teams. Fellows may work at youth soccer tournaments, high school athletic events (football and wrestling), and professional sports events (Denver Nuggets basketball and Colorado Avalanche hockey).

In my “free” time I enjoy volunteering with the non-profit Hope Shines, Inc. that works with orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda as the medical consultant and volunteer coordinator.

Tidbit About Yourself: I have been a program coordinator with the University of Colorado for the past thirteen years. I recently transitioned to the program coordinator position for the Sports Medicine Fellowship, Addiction Medicine Fellowship & the Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship I am excited to work with the wonderful physicians, fellows and staff in the program and serve as a representative of the Department of Family Medicine in Graduate Medical Education. In my free time, I enjoy doing anything creative; home remodeling, cooking, gardening, flower arranging.

In 1998, I created the primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado. In 2000, I was one of the first sports medicine doctors in the United States to use musculoskeletal ultrasound. I developed many of the initial approaches and techniques for diagnostic and interventional MSK ultrasound. I am a team physician at the University of Denver and have been the Men’s soccer team physician for 12 years. I have competed in road and mountain bike racing, triathlons and running races, including the Boston marathon and was a 2010 Leadman, completing all the Leadville races in a single season including the Leadville 100 Ultramarathon and Mountain bike race. My husband and I foster retired racing greyhounds in search of new homes, and spend the rest of our free time working on our ‘fixer-upper’ home in Boulder.

Tidbit About Yourself: I am the co-director of the Concussion program at Children’s Hospital Colorado, team physician for Thornton High School, and medical director for multiple area soccer clubs. Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, snowboarding, hiking with my husband and 2 dogs, and reading.

HOW TO APPLY ELECTIVE ROTATION REQUESTS
ROTATION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Elective rotation requests for the University of Colorado Sports Medicine Fellowship program and all required documentation must be submitted 90 days prior to the requested rotation date. Rotations are limited to two-week blocks; 1-15 or 16-31 of the month. If approved for an elective rotation with the University of Colorado, you will be notified via email.
Status/Eligibility: Visiting residents must be currently enrolled in an ACGME or AOA accredited training program.
Please send one email with the following information to laurie.lemmel@cuanschutz.edu to request an elective rotation. 1. Letter of Support: A letter of good standing from your program director. Program Letter of Agreement (PLA): The University of Colorado requires a current PLA (provided by the University of Colorado Sports Medicine Fellowship program coordinator) with the rotating resident’s home institution prior to the rotation. Malpractice Insurance: Proof of professional medical liability with coverage amounts no less than $100,000/ claim and $300,000/aggregate. Workers Compensation Coverage: Documentation of Workers Compensation Coverage from home institution. Criminal Background Check: Documentation of a cleared Level 1, or above, background check with the date the background check was performed. • Social Security Number • Criminal County • Criminal State • National Criminal/Sex Offender • Last Employment • Education Confirmation • License Confirmation (if applicable) • HHS Sanctions – GSA/OIG Government Sanctions Drug Screen: Evidence of a ten-panel drug screen. Influenza Clearance: Documentation of current influenza vaccine.

Health Clearance: Documentation of immunizations. • Documentation of two MMR vaccinations or laboratory evidence of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella. • Documentation of two varicella (chicken pox) vaccinations or laboratory evidence of immunity to varicella. A history of the disease is NOT acceptable. • Documentation of Tdap vaccination (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis). • Documentation of two tuberculin skin tests (TST) within the last twelve (12) months; or one InterferonGamma Release Assay (IGRA) (for example, T-spot QuantiFERON) results in the past twelve (12) months. • Documentation of a completed hepatitis B vaccination series (three doses). If the individual has declined the hepatitis B vaccination series, proof of a signed declination statement shall be made available to the University of Colorado upon request. Course Certification: • ACLS Certification – Must be from an approved provider and card must display AHA logo. • PALS Certification – Applies to only those residents interested in a Sports Medicine Pediatric rotation. If approved for an elective rotation with the University of Colorado Fellowship programs, the visiting resident is required to complete the University of Colorado’s Application for Clinical Rotation form. Program Coordinator will send application with the rotation confirmation email.
