chosen field and explore recent developments on key subjects specific to the discipline in question.
The aim of the graduate certificate programmes taught by the School of Veterinary Medicine (Dairy Herd Health, Equine Sports Medicine, Canine Sports Medicine and Veterinary Practice Management) is to educate veterinary graduates to a higher level in specific fields of veterinary clinical practice as well as offering the opportunity to undertake business training specific to the veterinary sector. Such specific education is beyond the scope of the existing MVB programme and this level of additional training is becoming increasingly more important for vets wishing to practice in specific disciplines and run successful businesses.
The School of Veterinary Medicine Strategic Plan is a ‘cradle to grave’ education for the Veterinary profession and these programmes give qualified vets the opportunity of continuing education throughout their career, maintaining their standards and introducing the latest techniques to their chosen field. The development of these programmes is also in keeping with the mandatory requirement of the Veterinary Council of Ireland for all registered veterinary practitioners to engage in Continuing Veterinary Education.
The programmes equip veterinary professionals with the necessary skills, knowledge and competencies vital to pursuing a high level of practice in their

ELIZaBETH ELLIOTT School of ARCHAEOLOGY Class of 2009
‘This course is the perfect choice for anyone keen to advance their interest in History to graduate-level with the opportunity to gain practical experience and knowledge of contemporary Irish Media. Key skills in communication and research gained at undergraduate level will be improved and refined to a professional standard. The MA, is in my opinion, unparalleled with any other graduate course offered in an Irish third-level institute. The opportunity to combine academic learning with practical skills, such as learning how to script and edit an historical documentary provides the student with a variety of skills that will set them apart in the eyes of employers.’
‘In my current Job as project Manager for a Fortune 500 company I leverage the skills I developed at the UCD School of Archaeology on a daily basis. From day one, my enthusiastic and highly-skilled professors taught me to embrace innovation and always question the status quo. While working on my thesis, they helped me to develop strong analytical capabilities and project management skills. My experience studying in a different country, hugely enjoyable and memorable, gave me the invaluable experience of learning in a different culture. Thanks to my experience with the UCD School of Archaeology, I developed a unique skill set that allows me to design and manage projects across the corporate and cultural divide and create sustainable solutions at work.’
Admissions and Entrance Requirements
For Higher Diploma, Graduate Diploma and Masters courses, applications can be made immediately through our UCD Applications system www.ucd.ie/ apply For research degrees it is advisable to talk through your proposal with a prospective supervisor in the College in advance of submitting a formal application. Full faculty listings can be found on School websites – see www.ucd.ie/colleges.html for more information. Unless otherwise stated, applications can be made at any point up to the beginning of the academic year. However, early application is advisable, as demand on courses can be high.
For our diploma programmes, a good 2.2 result in the BA is normally the minimum entrance requirement. The standard entrance requirement for our Masters programmes is a 2.1 in a primary degree (or 3.2 UCD GPA equivalent). Some programmes have slightly different requirements and may consider applicants with slightly lower qualifications. If you have any questions about your eligibility for a programme, it would be worth speaking in the first instance with the relevant admissions tutor prior to submitting an application. For our research degrees, prospective students will normally hold at least a 2.1 in their BA qualification, with a similar level of performance in a masters programme.

“For me, the MA in Gender, Sexuality and Culture was both life-changing and life-affirming. It challenged my assumptions and opened up new ways of thinking, new fields of knowledge. I came to the Masters as a mature student and it was apparent from the outset that the instructors valued the life experience and points of view that I brought to the classes, which really built my confidence. The instructors allowed me to gear my learning curve and assignments around my field of interest and provided me with the in-depth theoretical and historical frameworks that I needed to progress to the PhD. But, as a mature student, the programme worked for me on many other levels. The teaching team helped me fine tune my critical writing skills, all the while being sensitive to the needs, flexibility and support systems that mature students need at this level. While writing the thesis, my Masters supervisor set deadlines and meetings that suited my family commitments. When the time came to apply for a PhD and find a supervisor I received excellent support and guidance, which is still in place today. Cormac O’Brien, MA in Gender, Sexuality and Culture, Class of 2009

Maeve Farrell, MSc in Strategic Management and Planning, 2011. Management Consultant at Accenture, Ireland.
“For me, the Masters of Accounting was the perfect stepping stone to professional accounting exams and to a career in taxation. A strong focus on technical accounting facilitated an ideal learning environment resulting in enhanced knowledge and understanding of the subject areas. In addition, the skills acquired through the MAcc qualification provided graduates with an ‘edge’ over their prospective professional colleagues in what has become a highly competitive profession. Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience and a thoroughly fulfilling year.”
“Learning from world class faculty and working with a diverse group of students, the MSc in Strategic Management Planning allowed me to develop my teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The experience has proved invaluable to my career in consulting so far.”

Student Profile:
Prof Tony Fagan, College Vice-Principal for Research & Innovation & Graduate School Director (Research)
Laura Tobin PhD Candidate in Optical Engineering (Solar Energy)
UCD School of Electrical, Electronic & Communications Engineering
I have really enjoyed being part of and contributing to UCD during my time here. I’ve had many opportunities and experiences given to me that I would not otherwise have had, in areas that I never thought possible. I have organised and participated in outreach events nationally and internationally (South Africa). While studying at UCD, I have been able to participate in workshops such as REACH (Researchers Engaging Audiences & Communicating Highlights) to improve my communication and media skills to promote my research and have obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the Innovation Academy. My postgraduate study hasn’t just been about achieving my PhD but learning a wide range of new skills that can be applied to both my professional and personal life.
Prof Tony Fagan is Director of the Electronic and Computer Engineering programmes in UCD. Professor Fagan’s main research interest is in the application of DSP (digital signal processing) techniques to advanced digital fixed-line and wireless communications, with a particular interest in equalisation and detection methods. He also has interests in the areas of speech, audio and image processing.

”For as long as I can remember I always wanted to do engineering, and I chose to do Mechanical Engineering in UCD because I had a ‘hands on’ approach to all things mechanical (especially engines) while growing up, and I wanted to learn how and why things work the way they do. After I finished my undergraduate degree, I did a masters course (MSc) in racing engine design in the UK, after which I decided to come back to UCD to do my PhD research in gasoline emissions. I’m nearly finished my PhD research and I’m currently employed by Ferrari in Italy, where the work I do on engine design and testing feeds into my research. I’ve worked really hard to make this dream of working on high-performance cars a reality and UCD has given me the platform.”

Staff Profile:
Student Profile:
DR Mark scott, Head of UCD School of Geography, Planning & EnVironmental Policy
Dr Jennifer Hayes, Principal Clinical Psychologist, Health Service Executive
The overarching theme of Mark’s research is to investigate the role of spatial or territorial policies in building more sustainable or resilient places (cities, regions and rural areas) in the face of increasingly complex ecological, social and economic challenges. His research interests revolve around three themes – rural development; spatial planning and the geographies of housing; and environmental planning, design and policy. Mark has held research grants from the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences, the Royal Irish Academy, the Environmental Protection Agency’s STRIVE Programme, and the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government totalling over 1.6m Euro. He has acted as a consultant on spatial and environmental planning to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the Northern Ireland Assembly Environment Committee, and the Joint Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) Committee for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. Mark is currently a Leader of the Environmental Policy & Economics Cluster in the UCD Earth Institute.
I would consider my training with the UCD School of Psychology as one of the key factors in launching my career as a clinical psychologist. This training equipped me with all the skills that I needed to work as a clinical psychologist in the health service and enabled me to contribute in a meaningful and significant way to the provision of clinical psychology services. The emphasis on evidence-based practice and research is palpable at every juncture and the high quality of teaching provided is at the cutting edge of national and international psychological knowledge. Teaching staff go about their work with enthusiasm, dedication and a determination to support and empower psychologists in training to develop into competent, confident and effective clinicians.

staff & Research strengths:
The central strategic priority area to which much of the activity in the College of Human Sciences relates is ‘Culture, Economy and Society,’ of which ‘Society and Economy’ is a key theme. The world’s major socioeconomic problems are complex in nature, they are systemic in form, they are interconnected in expression and they demand urgent attention by government and scholars. Against a backdrop of global financial crisis and economic downturn, researchers in the College are investigating the intended and unintended impacts and consequences of public policies. The role, rights, and welfare of individuals in contemporary society are being explored and the changing perspectives on belonging, identity and citizenship in what is an increasingly urbanised modern setting are being disentangled.
The following are the core areas of focus for this domain:
• • • •
Identity, Conflict and Inclusion Innovative, Ethical Public Policy and Enhancing the Public Sphere Human Development and Flourishing/Child and Youth Wellbeing Smart Cities
Research being undertaken in the College also maps to another key theme ‘Culture and Change,’ and to the University’s strategic priorities ‘Health,’ ‘Information, Computation and Communications’ and ‘Energy and Environment.’
Career Opportunities:
Human Sciences subjects are chosen by many of today’s leaders in business, administration, the arts and the media at home and abroad. The College of Human Sciences also includes professionally accredited programmes in Psychology, Education, Library Studies, Social Work, and Urban Planning. Students obtain important life and employment skills such as critical thinking and analysis and learn how to be adaptable and flexible in a constantly changing socio-economic, political and industrial society. Graduate programmes in human sciences open doors to a huge array of careers including media and publishing, education, the environmental sector, community development, business, international trade and diplomacy and government among many others.
Human Sciences subjects help graduates to develop an understanding of the rich diversity of different cultures and gain an awareness of social, political and philosophical debates. Graduates’ capacity to connect different ideas and concepts enables them to propose solutions to social, business, personal, governmental and environmental problems, useful in many employment situations. Employers also appreciate graduates’ ability to understand, manipulate and draw policy inferences from large quantities of information and to identify key priorities for public and private sector policy. Being able to present yourself, your ideas and those of others to specific audiences also enhances your employability.

Graduate Studies 2014 Course Listing – UCD Online
In 2013 UCD Online introduced five exciting new online/ blended courses designed and delivered by academics across four Colleges and ten Schools within UCD. Existing online/blended education offerings that predate this initiative are also accessible via the UCD Online website which has become a portal for all UCD online courses.
UCD Online is a new University College Dublin offering based on 150 years of experience in delivering high quality academic teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Combining increasing student demand with rapidly evolving advances in technology, prospective UCD Online students can look forward to the same quality academic material and support as our campus based students. Studying online provides a flexible option for students who aim to achieve a UCD degree but are not positioned to attend campus due to location, work, family, or other constraints. There is no difference between a UCD qualification obtained on campus or online.

Graduate Studies
Degrees Explained Taught Degrees:
Research Degrees
Graduate taught programmes, such as Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas or taught MA or MSc programmes, the majority of the programmes will consist of taught modules, often with the addition of a large thesis or dissertation module for Master’s level programmes.
A research degree such as Masters by Research or PhD involves the sustained and in-depth study of a specific topic, which is then written up as a thesis for examination. Research degrees, involve students carrying out their own research and academic study under the supervision of a principal academic supervisor with the support of a Masters or Doctoral Studies Panel. The precise focus of research is agreed between the supervisor and the student. Research can be carried out at Masters or Doctoral level.
Taught graduate programmes have associated levels assigned to them in accordance with the NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications). For further information please see www.nfq.ie.
Research Masters Degree (Level 9)
Higher Diploma - Level 8 (60 Credits)
Research Masters degrees provide education and training in a particular subject through original exploration and research. A Research Masters usually takes one to two years full-time or two to four years part-time to complete. The research culminates in a thesis which sets out the conclusions of the research undertaken. The assessment and award of the degree is on the basis of the thesis.
The Higher Diploma is normally awarded following completion of a programme of 1 year duration. Progress and transfer routes include transferring to programmes leading to Masters degree/Postgraduate Diploma. These are often referred to as conversion programmes as they allow the student to gain knowledge in an area not covered by their undergraduate degree.
UCD Structured PhD (Level 10)
Professional Diploma - Level 7, 8 or 9 (20 -30 Credits)
The UCD Structured PhD aims to enable UCD PhD students achieve the best possible experience of graduate research and training. Making a substantial and original contribution to knowledge, normally leading to peer-reviewed publications remains the core objective of doctoral studies. The Structured PhD includes several innovative measures designed to support you in achieving your academic and professional objectives. A PhD typically takes 3 year fulltime (6 year part-time) to complete. Assessment for the award of a PhD is on the basis of a thesis which is assessed at a viva-voce exam.
The Professional Diploma can be a Level 7, 8 or 9 Special Award. Programme Award credits can vary, please check programmes specific information. Graduate Diploma - Level 9 (60-80 Credits) The Graduate Diploma is normally awarded following completion of a programme of 1 year duration. Progression and transfer routes include exemptions from a programme leading to a Masters Degree or in certain instances it can be offered as a completely separate programme.
For further information on the National Framework of Qualifications please see their website at: www.nfq.ie
Masters - Level 9 (90-120 Credits) The taught Masters Degree is awarded following completion of a programme of one to two years duration. Some of the progression and transfer routes include progression to programmes leading to Doctoral degrees.

Entry to UCD’s Graduate
programmes Entry Requirements The normal requirement for entry to a taught Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. However intending applicants should check the individual requirements listed on the School website, since some degrees may require a higher standard for entry.
For Master’s by research degrees, course work and examinations may also be specified by the College at entry; normally these have to be satisfactorily completed in the first year of a Master’s degree programme. To be eligible to enter one of UCD’s PhD programmes, a candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree may also be required. In certain cases, a candidate may be able to provide other evidence to the School in order to satisfy the entry requirements of the programme.
For applicants who do not have the required minimal entry standard, a year-long qualifying course may be available in some cases. In addition, many Master’s programmes have an associated Diploma course which, if passed at an appropriate honours level, may provide part of the necessary academic qualification for entry. In this case relevant work experience may be an essential requirement.
