Welcome to the Historic
UC Davis Horse Barn
Built in the early 1900s, the UC Davis Horse Barn (shown above) began as a carriage house for draft horses and mules used in agricultural work for the UC Berkley university farm. The Horse Barn later became a remount station for the US Army, standing several stallions including the thoroughbred stallion Gunrock, the son of Rock Sand and relative to the famed Man O'War. Gunrock (pictured below) started as the mascot for the men’s basketball team in 1924 and later served as the official mascot for the University!

Today, the UC Davis Horse Barn is the oldest structure on the core campus still used for its original purpose. The barn sits in the Harold Cole Facillity Complex, home to Animal Science teaching and research. A herd of about 40 UC Davis owned horses call the Horse Barn home. The horses housed here are used for teaching and research, and the UC Davis Horse Breeding Enterpris es. From choosing the breedings, to foaling out mares and training yearlings, student interns gain hands-on experience in the production of our yearlings. The experience culminates at the end of each school year with the UC Davis Horse Barn Production Sale.
