WELcOME Student activity plays an integral part in the life of any university. UCD’s student societies help to mould and shape our students’ experiences during one of the most important and influential stages of their holistic development. Providing and supporting co-curricular challenges through their activities, through academic, social, spiritual, and intellectual means, our student societies continue to contribute to the impact that University College Dublin makes on the state, society and our global community, through our network of graduates and alumni. This report is a collection of, and reflection on, what has been a significant year for the student societies operating in Ireland’s global university. With a record membership across all schools and colleges, augmented by an increase in the activity of, and representation of, student society activities in international and domestic orientation, community and school outreach programmes, addresses by community leaders, and the countless tea and coffee mornings and social gatherings, the 2015/2016 academic session includes many memories for the thousands of students that have engaged at various levels over the past 12 months. Throughout the pages of this report, you will note various changes in presentation, layout and content - it is intended as such. At the end of each year, each of our student societies reflect on, and record, their own year: the highs and lows, the laughs, the tears, the sleepless nights and lifelong friendships. Provided with guidance and a framework that allows for individuality to shine through, while ensuring the necessary metrics and requirements are met, these reports inform the measure and impact student societies have on their own membership, on the wider membership of the Societies Council, and, ultimately, the quality of their influence on the greater University community. Each society, often through the leadership of its auditor and committee, has full poetic and artistic licence to communicate their year in their own way. This report is both a collection of, and celebration of, what continues to be UCD’s largest and most diverse student population. The resources available to our student societies continue to 4
be challenged. As our student body expands, and the needs of our students increase, student societies respond with augmented levels of activity, new and more diverse events. New student groups, not previously known to the campus, identify areas and spaces for further support and development. The network of student societies, through the Societies Council, strive to provide for, and celebrate, the opportunity for all students to participate, and to excel, in the contribution they make to their time in UCD. Thank you to all those who have contributed to this report, and to those who have played a part in the support and development of student activities over the past year. To those students who have made the choice to get involved, may these pages serve as a reminder of the lasting impact you make to our community.
