UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI FINANCIAL AID GUIDE 2020/2021

We want you to worry less about the “how” and more about the here and now. That’s why we take action to keep college affordable and help you graduate with less debt. Opportunity should be available to everyone, and we work hard to keep it that way – that’s why our costs are lower than most colleges in Missouri and well below the national average.

LOANS

BORROWED MONEY YOU NEED TO PAY BACK WITH A LOW, FIXED INTEREST RATE – AVAILABLE TO BOTH STUDENTS AND PARENTS

This type of funding can help bridge the gap of your total cost to attend after your financial aid funding has been applied. Loans are borrowed, accumulate interest and must be repaid.

Federal Loans The federal government offers low-interest loan programs to help you attend UCM. Loans must be repaid after graduation. • Stafford Loan (student) – Minimum of $5,500 for dependent students and $9,500 for independent students per year. • Subsidized loans – You must demonstrate financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while you’re in school at least half-time, for the first six months after you leave school, and during a period of deferment. • Unsubsidized Loans – There’s no requirement to demonstrate financial need. You’re responsible for paying the interest during all periods. If you choose not to pay the interest while you are in school during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, your interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan. • PLUS Loan (parent) – Equal to the cost of attendance minus other financial aid received annually

Private-Educational Loans Private lending organizations offer loans to assist with your education and living expenses. For certain private loans, principal and/or interest payments can be deferred until after graduation.
