THE HONORS PROJECT

ENJOY HANDS-ON LEARNING The Honors Project is a four-credit-hour capstone course that exemplifies University of Central Missouri’s reasons to believe: • Culture of Service • Engaged Learning • Future-focused Academics • Worldly Perspective As an Honors College student, you'll have access to dedicated funding for research and/or creative activities. You’ll work one-onone with a UCM faculty member of your choice. This faculty member will oversee your progress and help to facilitate your project’s completion. Participation in an Honors Project also prepares you for life after college, including future employment or graduate school.

”The Honors Project gave me the chance

to use my skills to create a film that I can show to the world, and it allowed me to tell the stories of individuals who have influenced me.”

- Alyssa Clifton

Research consistently finds that independent study with a faculty member significantly increases overall student satisfaction and leads to higher rates of degree completion.

CHOOSE RED to discover learning to a greater degree. ”The Honors Project gave

me the opportunity to work directly with a faculty member and to expand my understanding in research, as well as biomedical sciences. It has undoubtedly been a key factor in my acceptance into medical school and has provided an excellent foundation to build upon in my future.”

- Matthew Caviness

STAND OUT Showcase your creative aptitude and your independent research abilities with your Honors Project. The most rewarding projects are those that combine your chosen program of study with your passion and career goals. Your project may explore an important local or global issue, showcase artistic talent or build upon coursework in your major – the choice is ultimately yours.

GET STARTED It's important to start thinking about your Honors Project topic early in your academic career. Contact The Honors College office to schedule an appointment with the undergraduate research coordinator who can assist with all phases of topic creation from brainstorming to defining the scope of your project. This meeting is required before moving through the approval process. The process is as follows: • After meeting with the coordinator, you’ll receive an email message regarding your Honors Project proposal. • Choose a faculty mentor to assist in the preparation of your proposal. • After your mentor approves the project, submit your electronic “Honors Project proposal.” Plan to submit your proposal at least one semester before intended enrollment. • The undergraduate research coordinator and the dean of The Honors College will review proposals and, if approved, students will receive an email confirmation.

After completion of the project, the faculty mentor will assign a final grade and provide a confidential project assessment evaluating the project content and quality. If you have any questions regarding the Honors Project or the project proposal process, please contact The Honors College office.

”Working on my Honors Project not only has given me an advantage over others applying for law school and a head start in my career, it also has opened several opportunities for me to travel the world.”

- Emily Carney
