THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MARKETING PROGRAM IS HAPPY TO INTRODUCE OUR FIRST NEWSLETTER. The intention of the newsletter is to connect alums to the marketing program in an effort to continue to maintain a relationship between graduates and the university. Topics within the newsletter include current student activities, department and university events, faculty and alumni accomplishments, as well as information continuing to help the university marketing program and students grow, network, and improve. Please contact the UCM marketing program with any content that you find valuable to add to the next issue of our newsletter.

UCM Receives Top Award at State Farm Marketing Competition

THE TEAM OF UCM MARKETING STUDENTS KYLIE MARCONNET, CENTER, AND ROBERT HUGHEY, RIGHT, CAPTURED THE OVERALL TEAM AWARD AT THE ANNUAL STATE FARM MARKETING AND SALES COMPETITION. GINGER KILLIAN, LEFT, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MARKETING, IS ADVISOR FOR THE TEAM.

wo University of Central Missouri marketing majors won the Annual State Farm Marketing and Sales competition hosted by UCM. The team consisted of Kylie Marconnet of Maysville, Missouri and Overland Park native Robert Hughey. Marconnet and Hughey received the highest combined score in the Marketing Presentation and Sales Role Play portions of the competition. Robert and Kylie finished first and second place, respectively, in the individual combined competition. In total, the two received $14,500 worth of awards for their individual finishes. The top team does not receive a monetary award, however, they did receive a trophy for the combined victory. Professor Killian, the advisor for the UCM team had the following to say: “I am extremely proud of Kylie and Robert. Their hard work and preparation truly paid off. It was a tremendous honor to work with these two individuals and watch them showcase their skills and represent UCM.”

Faruk Capan

he AMA Distinguished Executive Alumni award is an annual distinction given to an executive who has made outstanding contributions to the discipline of marketing, as well as his or her local community. Additionally, the individual’s firm provides a key product regionally, nationally, or internationally. A list of previous years winners can be found at this link: www. ucmo.edu/efm/exec.cfm. Faruk Capan, CEO and founder of InTouch solutions, is the 2016 Distinguished Executive Alumni Award winner. He sports an exceptional résumé including working with major pharmaceutical companies Marion Merrell Dow and Teva Marion Partners. During his time with Teva Marion Partners, he was the brains behind the pharmaceutical industry’s first patient community portal, MSWatch, the largest online community for people living with multiple sclerosis. Inspired by this project, Faruk began InTouch Solutions, an international Pharmaceutical marketing agency, in 1999. Today, they boast revenue of over $100 million annually and a staff of over 650 employees located in Kansas City, New York, Chicago, and London. Capan and InTouch Solutions have been recognized for numerous prestigious awards. This includes Faruk receiving Ingram’s Top 40 Executives Under 40 recognition and being named one of PharmaVOICE Magazine’s 100 Most Inspiring People in the Life-Sciences industry. Faruk was named Med Ad News’ Industry Person of the Year. InTouch Solutions has received recognition as Innovative Marketer of the Year and a Top 40 HealthCare Transformer by Medical Marketing and Media.

AMA Distinguished Executive Award is typically the highlight of AMA news for the year, the past year was filled with other exciting news regarding the UCM chapter. At the beginning of 2016, USA Today, in relation to The Buzz application has given AMA a chance to work with them and market a real product from the ground up. The application offers information about the school, current trends, and worldwide news. This partnership with USA Today will likely prove to be extremely beneficial. WHILE THE

In February of 2016, AMA members were able to travel to the 55th annual St. Louis AMA Marketing Conference. The conference provided opportunities to network with marketing industry leaders. A limited number of participants were also afforded the opportunity to attend the AMA national conference in March. This conference is approximately the same in concept with a larger geographic scope. UCM Alum Awarded Top 50 Marketing Mind in the World

and Harbert (UCM class of 1985) was awarded Top 50 marketing minds in the world by Business Insider. Rand has been the Chief Marketing Officer for State Farm Insurance since 2011. His work to make State Farm stand out in the crowded insurance market is clearly the work of a marketing mastermind. The honor comes after Mr. Harbert’s efforts to change insurance from being “for when things go wrong” to being “for when things go right.” His new outlook on insurance has FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: provided a unique advertising campaign RAND HARBERT PRESENTS for the company. TODD MCCLURE

is a recent addition to the Marketing Department faculty. He comes from a background in the golf industry with experience working in and managing courses in various locations throughout the country. With this firsthand business experience, he recognizes the role and significance of marketing. McClure earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration at New Mexico State University in 2003. He then went on to earn his masters degree from NMSU in 2005. process his students go through as they develop personal knowledge and professional interests. He also appreciates collaborating with other members of the faculty, especially across different disciplines, and being a part of the community UCM has to offer. McClure maintains a unique situation in that he works within the same profession and department as his self-described “better half”, Dr. Ginger Killian. Outside of work, McClure’s hobbies include golfing, traveling, reading, Sudoku, and spending time with friends.

semester of their junior year, IBE students are required to concurrently enroll in three juniorlevel core business courses, along with an Entrepreneurship and Community Service Practicum course. The content coverage and many of the assignments in the core courses are specifically sequenced to support students in organizing and managing their business and service ventures. Students are able to make the conceptual connections across disciplines because, on an ongoing basis, they are using concepts and tools from all three core courses to guide their decisions in the business and service organizations. Marketing Professor Todd McClure had the following to say regarding the assignment, “The IBE program is a unique opportunity for our students and one that I’m excited to be a part of. The students are learning about the ups and downs of working as a ‘company.’ On a couple occasions this semester, the students have had an opportunity to engage with and learn from business leaders from a variety of industries.”

Longtime Department Chair Starts Scholarship Fund

L

arry Haase has left a significant impact on the UCM community over his 50 years at UCM from freshman student to business professor. Haase has recently retired and in his departure he has also created an alumni scholarship. Haase donated $20,000 dollars in an attempt to begin a movement of alumni to continue to support the UCM community and marketing students. He hopes that alumni can continue to support current students and assist in providing opportunities for the program to grow. There are many ways to give.

In 1990, 18 percent of college and university alumni gave financially or in service to their alma mater, according to the Council for Aid to Education. By 2013, that number had been cut in half to less than 9 percent—a culmination of a trend that has persisted for more than two decades. UCM Marketing students are working hard to start businesses from scratch, volunteering class and service hours to charitable organizations, and succeed in college, whether they are first-generation college students, working full-time jobs, and even providing for a family.
