2011 Season Outlook The UCF rowing team looks to improve on its second-place finish last season at the inaugural Conference USA Rowing Championship by claiming its first league-crown in programhistory in 2011 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. This season the Knights will complete in the C-USA Rowing Championship as its own event, as in 2010, the event was held in conjunc on with the South/ Central Regional Championships. In 2010, both Jordynn Pauls and Chelsey Lauzon were named to the inaugural All-C-USA Rowing Team, while Lauzon also garnered her secondstraight CRCA All-South Region First Team honor at the conclusion of the season. This year, the league rega a is set to take place on May 14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where the Black and Gold will also compete in the South/Central Regional Championship the following day.

UCF is coming off a fourth-place South Region finish and an 11th place overall finish at the 2010 Aramark South/Central Regional Sprints and look to not only improve its mes in its individual event, but also look to move up the rankings among some of the na on’s best rowing programs.

WIth a challenging schedule during the regularseason, head coach Becky Cramer set the Knights up to succeed when it ma ers the most...at the C-USA Championship and the South/Central Regional Championships in mid-May.

The leadership of those eight seniors will be paramount to the Black and Gold’s success this season, as four of the seniors have experience rowing in the varsity eight boat.

The Knights will also travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., April 9 to face league-rival Alabama in a headto-head rega a on Black Warrior River, before welcoming Miami to the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center for its lone home rega a of the

UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center The UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center sits on the south shoreline of Lake Picke , just east of the UCF campus. The facility features a 12,000-square-foot boathouse with six individual boat bays for the team’s rowing shells. It also includes a locker room, as well as a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse that has plenty of room for erg training, mee ng rooms and coaches’ offices. This will be the fleet’s third season at the modern venue since the opening in spring of 2009.

Coaches Becky Cramer Head Coach - Third Season Becky Cramer enters her third season as the UCF head rowing coach in 2010-11. Cramer was named UCF’s head rowing coach in June 2008 a er serving as the Knights’ interim head coach during the 2008 spring campaign. Cramer is no stranger to the UCF rowing program, however, having spent six seasons at UCF as either the head coach or as an assistant coach. In UCF’s inaugural season in Conference USA in 2010, Cramer led her squad to a second-place finish at the league championship, while also guiding the Knights to a fourth-place showing in the South Region Championships. Under Cramer’s guidance, the Black and Gold placed 11th overall at the Aramark Sprints South/Central Regional Championships with 219 total team points. In her first season as the Knights’ head coach in 2009, Cramer’s squad put together a third-place showing in the South Region, while also placing 10th overall at the Aramark Sprints South/Central Regional Championships. During the event, Cramer’s varsity eight boat finished in fourth place in the Varsity Eight Pe te Final a er out-rowing Notre Dame and Kansas State.

Cramer served as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for two years prior to her arrival in Orlando. Her responsibili es there included training the novice women’s squad and ac ng as the primary recruiter. Before her s nt at USD, Cramer was the men’s novice crew coach at the University of Notre Dame for a year, while she also worked as an intern with the University’s Recrea on Services department. In recogni on of her contribu ons to the Figh ng Irish rowing program, the team gave her the Christopher J. Nye Award for integrity, leadership and unselfish dedica on - an honor tradi onally bestowed on a student-athlete. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, Cramer rowed for the Big Green and competed in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Rowing Championships. She was voted the team’s most outstanding freshman in 1996. In 2000, while finishing her degree, she served as a student intern coach in charge of the varsity four. From 1993 to 1995, Cramer trained at the Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center, where she was the stroke of the Junior Na onal Championship eight crew. She also was invited to U.S. Junior Na onal Team Selec on Camp in 1994.

In two seasons under Cramer, the Knights have earned three CRCA All-Region honors, two All-C-USA selec ons, a C-USA All-Academic Team selec on, 16 C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal recipients and 102 members of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

Cramer, who earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Dartmouth in 2000, earned her USRowing Level III coaching cer fica on in 2003 and has been a member of USRowing since 1994.

Susan Cohen Assistant Coach - Third Season Susan Cohen enters her third season as an assistant coach with the UCF rowing program in 201011. A er serving as the novice coach in her first season, Cohen took over as the Knights’ recrui ng coordinator beginning with the 2010 season.

helped with the development of an on-water training program as well as a weight circuit training program. Along with coaching the novice, she gained experience with the eights, fours and pairs. The Camels’ novice squad won a conference tle under Cohen, while the novice four earned the gold medal at last year’s New England Fours Championship.

In her me at UCF, Cohen has helped the Knights to two top-11 finishes at the Aramark Sprints South/Central Regional Championships, two top-four showings in the South Region Championships and a second-place finish in the inaugural Conference USA Championship in 2010.

Before star ng a career in coaching, Cohen was a member of the Ohio State rowing team from 2002-06. With the Buckeyes, she won the Na onal Buckeye Scholarship Award and also was an Academic All-Big Ten selec on.

Joel Furtek Assistant Coach - Second Season Joel Furtek enters his second year as the assitant coach for the UCF women’s rowing team for the 2010-11 season. Previous to becoming the newest addi on to the UCF rowing staff, Joel spent one year as rigger/ boatman and assistant coach at the University of Miami. During his me with the Hurricanes, he was responsible for maintaining all racing and athle c equipment, as well as designing and improving all equipment and accessories needed for the team. Mid-season, a er the head coach resigned during spring training, Furtek led the second varsity eight team to it best finish in program-history at the ACC Championships with a third-place showing. Furtek originally launched his collegiate coaching career in 1993 as the head novice coach at the University of Virginia. As the novice coach, Furtek directed recruitment, training and athlete development efforts, along with building awareness and interest around campus in regards to future rowing student-athletes. His exerons resulted in mul ple Southern and Central Champion crews and eight Na onal Championship medals for the varsity team. Furtek eventually returned to Virginia in 2002 as the assistant coach. Throughout his seven years at Virginia, he took charge in designing and implemen ng training plans and developing the fitness, strength and skill of the second- er varsity rowers. Furtek also assisted in recruitment efforts, planning and execu on of official visits and prospec ve phone calls. In his final year with the team, Furtek served as the squad’s rigger/boatman. His responsibili es included maintaining inventory of

racing shells, athle c equipment, maintenance and repair, building and improving equipment and transpor ng boats. In between his years with the University of Virginia, he accepted the posi on as head rowing coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 19972002. During the five-year period, Furtek directed the start-up and opera on of the Division I rowing team, put into ac on training and academic programs and recruited student-athletes and staff. In addi on, he was directly responsible for all fundraising while he maintained equipment and inventory. Under Furtek’s guidance, the UNC Varsity 4+ won the bronze medal at NCAA Tournament in 1998. Prior to his coaching days, Furtek was the coxswain at the lightweight selec on camp and open-team trials for the U.S. Na onal Team in 1993. He was at the camp which produced a World Champion 4- lightweight team. He also placed second in the open 4+ event at na onal team trials. Following his s nt as a rower, Furtek was posi oned as the sports equipment technician for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. There, he installed and removed the rowing, canoe and kayak venue and provided on-call support to the Olympic venue during the games. He also assisted in planning the original bid packages for Olympic contract. Furtek completed his bachelor’s degree in history at Yale University in 1990. While at Yale, Furtek coxed for four years in the collegiate sport and earned two varsity le ers. In his final season, the team was the undefeated na onal champion and went on to race at the Henley Royal Rega a in England. In 1990, he received the Babcock Award for outstanding spirit and also earned All-Ivy honors.

Karl Huhta

Graduate Assistant Coach - First Season Karl Huhta enters his first year as the graduate assistant for UCF rowing in 2011. Prior to enrolling at UCF, Huhta spent the last two years as an intern coach with the women’s rowing program at his alma mater Washington State University. Huhta was a four-year le erwinner for the Washington State men’s rowing program from 2004-08. In his senior year, he was elected team Commodore, was named to the 2008 All-Pacific 10 Conference Team and rowed in the Varsity 4+ that won the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Associa on (WIRA) Conference Championships, took silver at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRCs) and competed in the Intercollegiate Rowing Associa on (IRA) Na onal Championships.

In 2006, Huhta received the WSU Coaches Award for hard work and dedica on and, in recogni on of his contribu ons to the WSU men’s program, was honored with the Daniel K. Brevick Visionary Award in 2011. The award recognizes those who show outstanding commitment to the facilita on of change and advancement of WSU men’s crew. Huhta earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management with minors in business administra on and history from Washington State in 2009, before earning his USRowing Level III Coaching Cer fica on in December of 2010. He has been a member of USRowing since 2006. Huhta is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sport leadership and coaching from UCF.

Peter Billings Boathouse Director Peter Billings was named UCF’s boathouse director on Dec. 10, 2007. A 1973 graduate of the Massachuse s Ins tute of Technology, he was a rower on the United States Na onal Team from 1971-74, as well as in 1981. Billings was a naonal lightweight rowing champion from 1971-74, and con nues to be a na onal masters rowing champion da ng back to 1983.

Billings then served as the coach for the MIT men’s freshman lightweight crew for four seasons and became the vice president at Composite Engineering, Inc., where he was responsible for management of rowing shell produc on and repair, all nonrou ne communica on with rowing customers and was engaged in the design and produc on work on projects outside of rowing shell produc on from 1975-2000. In 1984, Billings supervised rowing shell and oar repairs, performing most of the repairs himself, at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
