OPENING THOUGHTS FROM DEAN PAUL JARLEY, PH.D.
Welcome to the UCF College of Business Administration. The landscape of business is changing. Our objective is to help students get to the ONE… • Who gets the job • Who starts a business • Who makes the sale • Who mentors and gives back And most importantly, the one who makes a difference. In the end, business is all about becoming the ONE. Students that successfully “get to the ONE” have four qualities we hope all of our students acquire while at the UCF College of Business Administration: 1. They are comfortable getting out of their comfort zone and understand the value of embracing risk. 2. They effectively communicate and collaborate with people, particularly those different from themselves. 3. They understand how to collect, analyze and use data in real time to make decisions. 4. Above all, they are problem solvers. The UCF College of Business Administration provides students with the resources and opportunities to achieve this through four key platforms:
1. Student Experience We are providing students with experiences in and out of the classroom that contribute to a unique college culture. 2. Entrepreneurial Culture UCF is the cornerstone within the foundation of Orlando’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. From unique business competitions and events to the UCF Blackstone LaunchPad, students have access to services and opportunities to acquire and perfect the skills of an entrepreneur. 3. Thought Leadership Whether in the classroom or delivering a talk at the Dean’s Speaker Series, faculty members are engaged in the latest research and program development to bring the next generation of business leaders to market. In addition, UCF College of Business Administration alumni are leading businesses throughout the world, and often return to share their experiences and knowledge. 4. Unique Place of Opportunity Orlando is one of the world’s fastest growing economic centers and widely recognized as one of the top travel destinations. This community has some of the most interesting and exciting new economic centers from Lake Nona’s Medical City to the Creative and Health Villages in Downtown Orlando. In addition, UCF is the second-largest university in the United States, providing an unparalleled opportunity to work with the most diverse and dynamic student body. UCF Stands for Opportunity and the College of Business Administration delivers opportunities each and every day.
GET TO
THE ONE! In the fall semester of 2014, we developed the concept of “getting to the ONE” as a part of our Professional Development curriculum. To illustrate how employers evaluate candidates and make hiring decisions, we created a platform to illustrate this point and effectively tell students what steps they must take to be a great employment prospect. Our objective is to teach our students how to distinguish themselves in a crowded and competitive marketplace. We surveyed over 1,000 incoming students as part of their registration for our Professional Development class. The 13–question survey simply asked them to identify the different activities, clubs and leadership positions they had or aspired to as a student. Starting with identifying the students by major, we were able to create a decision tree for filling a job in a company. In fact, we chose an actual job description to build our scenario. Scenario: We were “hiring” for a financial analyst working with non-governmental organizations worldwide. There are 1,200 students enrolled in the Professional Development class.
1,070
registered for Welcome to the Majors event (required first day of class)
468 took the survey (only 44% showed up for the job opportunity)
32 FIFTY-SEVEN are in or want to join a club (engaged in their college)
aspire to a leadership position (took risk and initiative to be a leader)
92 were Finance majors (the base line requirement)
NINE
interested in becoming College of Business Student Ambassadors (further distinguished themselves and worked with Dean of the College)
1
3 plan to study abroad (international experience)
two volunteer in the community (company values community service)
has determined what they want to do (clearly communicates well) and got to the one.
We help students acquire the skills they need to understand business, build a great career and contribute to society. In addition, our culture encourages faculty members to passionately teach and participate in the research that helps define and refine business. I invite you to find your place here with us and BE THE ONE that makes a difference.
Paul Jarley, Ph.D.
