Psychology Faculty Members Featured in Regional Campuses Newsletter … The Psychology Research Team, the brainchild of Drs. Karen Mottarella and Shannon Whitten, fosters a culture of scholarly inquiry among students and demonstrates the professors’ commitment to student research as a part of undergraduate coursework. They meet regularly with student research assistants and Honors in the Major (HIM) students to conduct empirical research. Dr. Karen Mottarella is a licensed clinical psychologist who joined UCF’s faculty in 1998. Her research areas include the psychology of women and the scholarship of teaching and learning. As the founding psychology faculty member at UCF Palm Bay in 2001, she recalls, “We held office hours in the library while our building was being built!” Dr. Mottarella’s commitment to excellence has been recognized multiple times by the university: University Faculty Award for Excellence in Academic Advising in 2002, Teaching Incentive Award (TIP) for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 2006, and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award (SoTL) in 2007.

Dr. Shannon Whitten received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Memphis in 2003. Her research interests are in Psychology of Language; specifically, how language use in various media affects cognitive and psychological processing. On the importance of mentoring, she said, “There is nothing more important or rewarding to me than helping the next generation of students achieve their goals. Through undergraduate mentoring we not only have the opportunity to train students in research and scholarship; we also are able to facilitate confidence, critical thinking, and social awareness . . .” According to Department Chair Dr. Bob Dipboye, “Drs. Whitten and Mottarella have done an amazing job in developing the undergraduate program as seen by their initiation of a chapter of the Psychology honor society (Psi Chi) at UCF Palm Bay and the many students they have involved in conference papers and presentations . . . Dr. Mottarella also serves as the faculty coordinator for the forensics certificate which Psychology offers, in conjunction with several other departments. “ Dr. Alvin Wang, head of the honors program notes, “Drs. Karen Mottarella and Shannon Whitten are committed to offering their students the best possible undergraduate experience. Their dedication is not only evident in the classroom, but also in their labs where students are actively engaged in the pursuit of new psychological knowledge . . .” Alumnus Ashley Harper said, “This research program had a huge impact on me . . . After my first semester at UCF, I was selected to join the research team. With HIM, I was able to start working on my undergraduate thesis and was guided through the whole research process. I won First Place at the Showcase of Undergraduate Research. My presentation was also accepted for a special Interactive Poster Session at the Southeastern Psychological Association conference. We are currently working together to publish the results of my study.” The quality of the mentoring given in this research program is evident based on the number of awards and juried presentations or publications. Palm Bay students have won and placed in the university-wide Showcase of Undergraduate Research (SURE) award program in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Further, honors students have presented their honor’s related research at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference, Annual Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Conference, and the Statewide Faculty Symposium on Undergraduate Research , and were published in CyberPsychology &Behaviour.

BCC Welcome Back Highlights the Future and UCF Partnership The King Center was nearly full with hundreds of returning staff and faculty members from all four campuses of Brevard Community College who were attending the annual welcome back session. President Drake spoke about the 50th Anniversary and the college's mission. During these comments he introduced Dr. Denise Young and highlighted the close relationship between UCF and BCC, particularly the regional campuses in Cocoa and Palm Bay. Each of BCC Vice President highlighted changes and upcoming events for their divisions. After the general session, Dr. Young participated in the Faculty Working Lunch Meeting in the Rotunda, and the Curriculum Cluster and Discipline Meetings for the Social Science Cluster.

Turkish Nile Foundation Representatives of the Nile Foundation and their families gathered at the home of Denise Young to celebrate the end of Ramadan and to commemorate the addition of students in Brevard County to their annual K-12 art and essay competition . The Nile Foundation is a 501©3 non-profit, non-governmental, and non-partisan organization established in 2003 to promote better understanding and closer relations between individuals and communities in Central Florida and Nile Foundation engages the public in dialogue through its three main departments: Education, Culture and Humanitarian Works. After the Nile Foundation was established it opened a cultural center to promote the intercultural relations between the all people from different nations and called this cultural center as the Orlando Turkish Cultural Center. The foundation provides learning opportunities for K12 students on a variety of subjects such as language, science and art

classes during school periods as well as summer times through summer schools and camps. The center also organizes seminars and lectures for adults through partnership with departments and student organizations in universities. Nile Foundation values and supports the unity of Turkish and American Community across the board on issues and matters that are on the Turkish Agenda. They recognize that the issues are now global, and they are not just the issues of Turkey and the Turkish people alone. They are very pleased to share our culture and heritage with friends like you and we welcome your continued participation and interest in the Turkish and American community and the Turkish interests at large, here in Central Florida and throughout the world. In the past two years Nile has sponsored learning trips to Turkey that have included UCF faculty and administrators. BCC/UCF Fulbright Grant Denise Young and Provost Slaughter (BCC) with the support Dr. James Drake, President, Brevard Community College, submitted a grant application for a one year joint UCF/BCC Fulbright grant. The objective of the Fulbright Scholar-in Residence (SIR) Program is to bring scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. colleges and universities to internationalize host institutions’ campuses, curricula and communities. In addition to co-submitter, Provost Slaughter, many Brevard Community College personnel provided support for this gran t application including: Provost and Dean of FacultyPhil Simpson; Provost Ethel Newman, Cocoa Campus; Professor Marina Baratian; Professor Wayne S.

Faculty & Staff Achievements Barbara Alderman, Andy Todd, and Barbara Rau Kyle presented a recap of their Information Fluency project, “Multiple Partnerships for Student Information Literacy: Library, Writing Center, Faculty, and Administrators,” at the 7th Annual Georgia Conference on Information Literacy in Savannah on October 1. On Monday November 2, 2010 Angel Edgecombe and Angie Jones attended the 2010 Diversity breakfast. The theme for Diversity Week, which began Monday, Nov. 1, was “A Nation of Nations.” This year’s speaker was Dr. Lee Bitsoi, the Minority Action Plan Program director in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bitsoi has dedicated his career to enhancing opportunities for minority students. He directs a recruitment plan for minority students in genomic sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Angel Edgecombe, Angie Jones, and John King attended and volunteered at NACADA's (National Academic Advising Association) 34th Annual conference hosted by the University of Central Florida October 3-6, 2010, at the Coronado Springs Resort at Walt Disney World. Angel Edgecombe and Angie Jones are participating in two webinar series for 2010-2011: "Foundations of Academic Advising" and "Academic Advising for Student Retention and Persistence". These webinars help advisors to realize that a strong conceptual foundation helps advisors understand the big picture of academic advising as well as tailor advising activities to the individual needs of the student. This webinar also defines the term conceptual in relation to the advising experience, outline the components of the conceptual framework, and discuss the theoretical underpinnings of the academic advising experience. NACADA President Jayne Drake and Past President Nancy King will demonstrate that, when done right and well, advising, like teaching, is a shared and reciprocal responsibility between students and academic advisors who are clearly connected to the teaching and learning mission of higher education.

Dr. John Lynxwiler had a paper titled “The Homogeneity of Extreme Abortion Attitudes Among Women,” published in the International Journal of Sociological Research Vol. 3, Nos. 1-2: 35-46. The paper was co-authored with Dr. David Gay. Dr. John Lynxwiler, associate professor of sociology, was appointed as the chair of the Stanford M. Lyman Memorial Scholarship Committee. The Stanford Lyman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Ph.D. candidates who are working on a dissertation in sociological theory, symbolic interaction, race relations, law, or ethics. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to applicants whose university and/or faculty are associated with the Mid-South Sociological Association. Dr. Donna Malvey’s recently published book, The Retail Revolution in Health Care, was selected for review by the American Librarian Association and recommended for adoption by public libraries and university libraries. It was co-authored by Myron Fottler and published in February 2010 by Praeger. Professor Daniel Marien gave a public lecture on "The Brave New World of Oil and Gas: Unconventional Sources of Fossil Fuels" on October 28, 2010, in West Melbourne, FL, at a meeting of the Turtle Coast Sierra Club. He gave a second public lecture on November 20, 2010, on climate refugees at a meeting of the Unites Nations Association in Orlando, FL. Professor Marien also read an academic paper on "Obama’s Leadership in Climate Politics: an Interim Assessment" at the Northeastern Political Science Association, in Boston, MA, on November 13, 2010. In addition, he has given a several radio interviews discussing the U.S. midterm elections on the French-speaking network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Dr. Barbara Kinsey co-authored journal article, "Location of Public Goods and the Calculus of Voting: The Seattle Monorail Referendum." Social Science Quarterly 91(3): 741761.

Florin Mihai has co-presented a paper titled “Making the Transition from Traditional to Online Teaching: Challenges and Solutions” at the 2010 Southeast TESOL Regional Conference. Another paper titled “Integrating Technology in Online Teacher Education Courses: An ESOL Infusion Course Example” has been accepted for presentation at the Florida Association of Teacher Educators Conference in October.

Barbara Rau Kyle and Andy Todd, along with a BCC librarian and UCF peer writing consultant, conducted clicker -based Information Fluency workshops at four BCC Communication classes in October.

Community Involvement Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted a Best Business Awards Gridiron Gala on October 8, 2010, where members of the UCF Alumni Chapter sponsored a table for  dinner and also staffed a table with UCF items. Every person who entered the door (over two hundred) was decorated with black and gold beads, regardless of the team jersey  they wore to the event. The Chapter won the competition to see which university-sponsored basket earned the highest price in the silent auction. The basket included many UCF logo items and football tickets. There are 16,400 UCF alumni in  Brevard County. The UCF Southern Region took part in the Florida State Employees Charitable Campaign (FSECC) again this year. Even with a sluggish economy faculty and staff members dug deep to raise funds for the campaign. This year’s total was $3,440, which is a 3% increase from last year. These funds will go to  support the following local charities: Brevard County United Way; Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Florida; The Nature Conservancy; Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida; Central Brevard Sharing, Inc; Salvation Army of North Central Brevard County; Central Brevard Humane Society; North Brevard Charities Sharing Center, Inc; The Haven for Chil dren; Canine Assistants; and Homes for Our Troops. As part of her community activities on behalf of UCF, Dr. Denise Young, Southern Region Associate Vice President, par ticipated in many events. Over the course of the Fall 2010 term, she attended the following: 

Attended September 10th 2010 Roast & Toast of the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. Mike Rein with United Launch Alliance was honored as the Public Relations Professional of the Year, and  Lisa Rice, President of Brevard Workforce was roasted.



Attended The Economic Development Commission Community of Distinction Council meeting on September 14, 2010.



Represented UCF at the BCC Center for Global Education & Exchange & the Intensive English Program when it hosted an International Student Reception & Luncheon at the BCC Cocoa Community Dining Room on September 22, 2010.



Attended the September CivMil Dinner on September 23, 2010, which was hosted by active duty military, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the DoD Civilians. The event was held

Attended the Viera/Suntree Area Business Council Quarterly Meeting, a initiative of the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida on September 28, 2010. Represented UCF at the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast Board of Directors Meeting on October 6, 2010. Served as a panelist the International projects to Promote Sustainability at the Engaging STEM and Sustainability in Central Florida Service Learning Day which was sponsored by the Karen L. Smith Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning on October 8, 2010, at the UCF Orlando campus. Attended the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast, Brevard County and Space Florida sponsored the Florida Space and Technology Forum, Diversifying Florida's Economy for the Future at the Florida Solar Energy Center on October 11, 2010. Dr. Miller attended the Annual Meeting of the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast that was held October 20, 2010. Participated in the Nile Foundation's 7th Annual Dialogue Dinner, "Empathy; Walking in Another's Shoes," on October 21, 2010, at the Orlando Sheraton Downtown. Speakers were Robert F. Stuart, Orlando City Commissioner & Executive Director, Christian Service Center for Central Florida, and Elvan Aktas, Ph.D., Istanbul Center Outreach Representative & Assistant Professor of Finance, Valdosta State University. The Master of Ceremony was Kelli Cook, Central Florida News 13. Attended the Invitation Only Harris Corporation Annual Meeting of Shareholders was held October 22, 2010 in Melbourne. Demonstrations of some of their products, systems and services were given prior to and after the meeting. Attended as a member of the Florida Solar Energy Center Policy Advisory Board which met on Monday, October 25, 2010.

Karen Mottarella and Shannon Whitten of UCF Palm Bay Psychology program presented their research "What Students Really Want in an Undergraduate Faculty Mentor" at the National Academic Advising Association's (NACADA) Annual conference on October 5th. DeAnn Collins, a former undergraduate research assistant on the UCF Palm Bay Psychology Research Team and current student in the Masters in Social Work program at UCF Orlando, co-presented. Drs. Whitten and Mottarella also presented at 3rd annual Florida Statewide Symposium on Engagement in Undergraduate Research at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. They presented on "Exploration of Good Vs. Bad Undergraduate Research Mentoring from the Student's Perspective." Dr. Karen Mottarella of the UCF Palm Bay Psychology program began her second three-year appointment as a review editor for the NACADA Journal, the premiere journal in academic advising and student success. A Samaritan, a short documentary by Aleksey Siman and Ben Michel was featured in the Global Peace Festival running in Winter Park and Orlando this week in September. The film describes " Animal Safehouse", Leandra Preston's (English) nonprofit organization that provides foster homes for pets of women who are living in shelters as survivors of domestic violence. This service ensures do not have to give up their pets during this traumatic time. Leandra Preston presented "From Cyborgs to Cybergrrls: Redefining Girl Power through Digital Literacy" at the *Reimagining Girlhood* conference hosted by SUNY Cortland in Cortland, NY on October 22, 2010. Leandra Preston presented at the National Women's Studies Association conference in Denver, CO the weekend of November 11-14. Her presentation was titled "(Re) Envisioning Men in Feminism," and focused on the role of masculinities in Women's Studies and men in feminist activism.

Drs. Maria Santana, Director of Women's Studies and Denise Young, Southern Region Associate Vice President, submitted a grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the program for Digital Humanities Initiative Level 1 Start Up Funding. The proposal is entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the Transformation of the American Woman: An Imagology Studyâ&#x20AC;? and focuses on digitizing the artifacts left as an historical trail of the lives and deaths of lower class women immigrants to the United States in the last century. Irina Morozova, Professor, Department of Comparative Studies, Institute for Philology and History, Russian State University for Humanities, Moscow, is also a partner in the grant. Dr. Morozova has worked with Dean Fernandez and Dr. Young over the past several years on other initiatives at UCF (including the Zora! festival, and in Moscow). Dr. Maria Santana, UCF Women's Studies Director, hosted a Reception for New Women Faculty Members on October 8, 2010 at the UCF Student Union. Dr. Denise Young took part in the event. Dr. Denise Young and Sonya Curtis received Taino Awards on November 12, 2010, from the Florida Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for their work gaining recognition for the original Ponce de Leon landing spot which is in Brevard County.

Dr. Denise Young co-presented with Dr. Diane Chase and Ms. Heidi Watt, at the 115th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). They presented a paper titled "RED ALERT!: Developing an Early Warning System for Substantive Change." Dr. Young also served as a mentor for a first time SACSCOC attendee and as a Roundtable moderator.

Fall 2010 Course Innovation Project Southern region faculty members participated in four workshops (each two hours in length) to innovate or refine teaching techniques and learning activities. Workshops included a series of hands-on experiences and discussions which led up to a final presentation of course innovations. Each full-time participant received a $300 grant upon completion of the project and submission of the deliverable. Selections were made based on clarity of the proposal and feasibility of the project. Participating in the project were Susan Craig, Tino DiBernardo, James Katt, Barbara Kinsey, Barbara Kyle, Virginia Ludwig, Daniel Marien, Irina McLaughlin, Florin Mihai, Jane Moody, Leandra Preston, Deborah Rhyne, and Jerry Sublette. Topics covered were: Advanced Online Teaching, Building Community and Community-Based Research, Learning HTML to Enhance Webcourses, and WebVets: Final Sharing by Participants.

Attended a Community Leaders Luncheon hosted by Anthony Catanese, President, Florida Institute of Technology, on October 26, 2010, on the FIT Campus.



Attended the UCF Community Advisory Board, Department of Health Management and Informatics quarterly meeting at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) in Cocoa on October 29, 2010.



Took part in the annual UCF Diversity Breakfast being broadcast to the Palm Bay campus in November 1, 2010.



Joined the Palm Bay Psi Chi and Psychology Club in celebrating a Spooktacular Halloween on November 1, 2010, where prizes were given for Best Psychologythemed Costume, Best General Costume, Yummiest Halloween-themed Food, and Spookiest Food.



Attended the Brevard Workforce Development Board, Community Involvement Committee, convened on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, to address Corporate Goal 1 - Convene the community and conduct community awareness campaigns regarding workforce issues.



Traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica,(not supported by university funds) as part of a UC F delegation visiting the University of Costa Rica. This visit is part of a SACS Dr. Avalina Gonzalez. Dr. Denise requirement in anticipation Young, Dr. Consuleo Stebbins, and of creating new study abroad Ms. Maria Maunez opportunities, and establishing new partnerships with international universities. During the trip, the President of UCR signed an agreement that designated UCF as a UCF Strategic Partner.



Attended the the 3rd Annual International Breakfast in Orlando on November 15, 2010.



Attended the Brevard Workforce Directors Meeting on November 19, 2010.



Hosted COHPA Associate Deans, Pamela Kirby, who toured the Cocoa Campus and met with faculty members on November 22, 2010.



Attended initial Course Innovation Project workshops that were held on the Cocoa Campus this Fall.

Participated in the Southern Region Thanksgiving potlucks. The Palm Bay campus celebrated on November 17, 2010, and the Cocoa campus on November 22, 2010. Canned goods collected at the events were donated to a local food bank.



Joined with other UCF Palm Bay faculty and staff for the Brevard Community College Palm Bay campus for a Thanksgiving luncheon on November 23, 2010. Also attending were Sonya Curtis, Shakira Guice, John King, Barbara Alderman, Barbara Quaintance, Nancy Brasel, Jerry Sublette, Alex Armstrong, Jim Costa, Cara Sirman, and Felipe Mendez.



Hosted Lynn Becker, an Instructor for the Department of Management, College of Business Administration; and Drs. Shannon Whitten, Erin Murdoch, Warren Waren, and Karen Motterella on December 1, 2010, to begin the process of establishing an Undergraduate Research Program in Cocoa and Palm Bay.



Attended President Hitt's Open House on December 8th, also attended by Michelle Aybar-Tapia, Diana Soltys, and Al Davis.



Hosted Dr. Robert Chandler, Director of the Nicholson School of Communication and, Assistant Director, Boyd Lindsley’s visit of the Cocoa and Palm Bay Campuses on December 9th.



Assisted with party preparations for the Connected by 25 annual Holiday Party for the kids on December 9th at Travis Park in Cocoa.



Nursing Program Recognition in the Brevard Business News Cocoa’s College of Nursing program received extensive publicity in the November 15, 2010 edition of Brevard Business News. The program, which is limited to 36 students and managed by Jacqueline LaManna, has consistently earned photo credit: BBN recognition for the large Adrienne B. Roth number of students who participate in the Honors in the Major (HIM) program and are included in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Featured in the article are Jackie LaManna, who won the UCF College Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and is currently working on her doctorate; Mindy Klaproth, who graduated in

August with Honors and a listing in “Who’s Who”; Allison Rogers, another August graduate with a “Who’s Who” credit; and Kelly Sullivan, another August Honors graduate and 2009 – 2101 Student Nursing Association Chapter President, who earned the Chloe Trammel Memorial Award at the 2009 Florida Student Nursing Association Convention. Other recent HIM Nursing graduates include Giselle Hively, Lindsey Kimmerling, and Lydia Watkins. Joining these students in recognition of nursing excellence in Cocoa are Jennifer Watts, who was the 2010 Founder’s Day College of Nursing winner, and Barbara Green, a Florida Nurses Association scholarship winner.

Connected by 25 Support in 2010 The UCF Southern Region once again supported Connected by 25 Brevard for the second year as our holiday charity in lieu of gifts. Our campuses “adopted” 25 former foster children and their babies or toddlers for this holiday. . When the Director of Connected by 25 came to pick up the donations she said she was so surprised and touched by our generosity. She said that the children are really looking forward to the gifts and that they will be so excited. We were able to give each child clothing and toys, and we provided small gifts for the parents as well. The “LIFESIZE” stockings were packed (see picture) with many much-needed items. A decorated tree was donated to their Christmas party by one of our employees and was given to one of the foster kid parents at the end of the party.

Saying Goodbye to Lynn For the past 12 years, Lynn Mitchell has been a much loved fixture on the Cocoa campus. From her start as a student assistant in Engineering to her later role as gatekeeper for Advising, Lynn’s kind and generous spirit brought smiles to the faces of students, faculty and staff alike, and if you had a question about a little tidbit of trivia, she would always know the answer. As part of her Mexican themed retirement party, large quantities of staff provided dishes were consumed and much laughter was shared. There was a different kind of beginning to this very special party. Dr. Dan “The Magic Man” Ezell, an Education professor, performed a magic show for the staff’s entertainment. Dr. Ezell also provided a delicious cake and beautiful floral arrangements. Lynn, you will be much missed on campus, and we hope you find great pleasure in your retirement!

College of Arts and Humanities/College of Sciences Jamesha Cox, student ambassador/office assistant for UCF Cocoa Enrollment Services, was selected to be a UCF Legislative Scholar. During the 2011 Florida Legislative session, this Political Science (Pre-Law) major will be an intern for a member of the Central Florida Legislative Delegation. This internship provides housing and a stipend for students to live three months in Tallahassee during the legislative session while earning up to 12 credit hours. Olivia Mettot is the new managing editor of Sociological Spectrum, a sociology journal with an international circulation that is housed on UCF’s Cocoa campus. Olivia is a Direct Connect student who received her A.A. degree from Brevard Community College and her B.A. degree in sociology at UCF’s Cocoa campus. This fall, Olivia was admitted to the M.A. graduate program in sociology at UCF and awarded a tuition stipend. Rebecca Shillings, a former Cocoa Psychology undergrad and UCFVolunteer Coordinator, was nominated for Florida Today’s Volunteer of the Year. Included in the places Rebecca volunteers are Habitat for Humanity, Daily Bread, Eckerd Youth Alternatives, the American Lung Association, Brevard Cultural Alliance, and Children’s Miracle Network. Rebecca is continuing with her education as a graduate student in Social Work on the Orlando campus. Tori Harwood, LCSW spoke about her private practice and work with adults and couples. Another speaker, Miriam Vermiller, LMHC, spoke about her work as a BCC psychology instructor and in private practiceOver 20 students attended this panel discussion and received advice and answers to their questions about psychology careers, masters programs, being a therapist, and private practice. This was a truly uplifting, motivating and helpful panel for psychology students. 7th Annual “Very Spooktacular Halloween Party at Palm Bay” On Monday November 1, the UCF Palm Bay Psychology Club & Palm Bay Chapter of Psi Chi hosted the Seventh Annual Very Spooktacular Halloween party for psychology students, and the entire UCF Palm Bay Faculty and Staff. Laura Emory was awarded Best Costume for her Karen Horney’s fear of success costume. Drs. Mottarella, Whitten, Murdoch and Storm dressed up in a group costume as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator! The UCF Palm Bay Psychology students as well as staff and faculty at Palm Bay enjoyed costumes, spooky/delicious food and each other’s company. Psychology Club and Psi Chi County First Annual Epilepsy Walk UCF Regional Palm Bay Campus Psi Chi and Psychology Club’s participated in the Brevard County’s First Epilepsy Walk at Gleason Park in Indian Harbor Beach. The clubs raised over $300.00 in support of Epilepsy research and enjoyed a beautiful Saturday morning walk in Gleason Park. Palm Bay Psi Chi and Psychology Club Community Projects Palm Bay Psi Chi and Psychology Club chose Project Response and The Women’s Center (both of Melbourne) as community projects for the Fall 2010 semester. Members have been gathering clothes, personal hygiene items and much needed supplies to replenish the food pantries for both community services throughout the semester. Hundreds of items were collected and will be dropped off on November 29. Psi Chi and Psychology Club Psych in the Cinema Psi Chi and Psychology Club were treated to a private showing of Social Network at the Oaks Theatre in Melbourne on October 12. Special thanks to Psychology Club member Chantal Bailey who arranged the event! The night was complete special prices on admission, popcorn and drinks, and a UCF marquee for our private theatre. Members enjoyed the show and then stayed for a lively discussion. Our second Psych in the Cinema is planned for December 1, with more on the calendar for our Spring 2011 semester. Psi Chi Induction On Friday November 12 at 7:00 PM, the UCF Palm Bay Chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, hosted their Fall Induction Ceremony for both the UCF Palm Bay and Cocoa Psi Chi chapters. The event was beautifully organized and coordinated by UCF Palm Bay Psi Chi President, Meg Tworkowski, and a magnificently decorated Psi Chi cake was homemade for the event by Morgan Goetzfried, a Palm Bay Psi Chi inductee and the Historian of the UCF Palm Bay Chapter. UCF Palm Bay Inductees Kimberly Davidson, Sally Clausen and Morgan Goetzfried also helped to set up and decorate for the ceremony. Along with Morgan, Kimberly and Sally the following UCF Southern Region students were also inducted and recognized for their outstanding academic achievement in psychology: Jennifer Ahearn, Erica Baxter, Steven Case, Laura Emory, Morgan Fettig, Brian Johnson, MaryBess Leech, Sarah Lentini, Chris Madsen, Thomas Milbourne, Cassie Norsworthy, Christopher Sharpe, Debra Stagman, Bianca VonFeldt, Pilar Walker, and Pamela Willett. Dr. Karen Mottarella, Psi Chi faculty advisor for the UCF Palm Bay Chapter, gave the Welcome address and noted the outstanding achievements of the inductees. The inductees were honored to have the outgoing international president speak at their induction! Dr. Alvin Wang, Dean of the Burnett Honors College and 2009 International President of Psi Chi, served as the guest speaker. Dr. Shannon Whitten and Drs. Erin Murdoch and Margo Storm, faculty advisors of the UCF Cocoa Chapter, led the induction ritual and congratulated the inductees. The event was truly a special evening in which parents, spouses, family and friends as well as the Southern Region Psychology faculty convened to honor the scholarly achievement of the inductees.

College of Education On Wednesday, October 20, 2010, the students of SCE 4304 traveled to Orlando to attend a field trip at the Rainforest Cafe. The trip was a preview of the types of educational programs offered by the Rainforest Cafe for elementary aged student field trips. Students learned about the care of the fish in the many aquariums in the restaurant, about the types of animals featured in the exhibits, and conservation efforts to help save the rainforests around the world. Students in the early childhood elementary program are currently working within early elementary school classrooms within Brevard County and will apply their knowledge as they continue to work with Brevard County students during the upcoming semester. The members of the University of Central Florida, Cocoa Liaison Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi are going to host a special "Read Aloud" event at Books-A-Million on Tuesday, December 14, from 6:00-7:00. We will also accept donations of new children's books to give to Rolling Readers, a nonprofit literacy program. Together, KDP and Rolling Readers promote literacy and are working together to develop children's desire to be lifelong readers. Please bring your children (pre-k through 5th grade) to this event; members of KDP will read aloud and delight young readers, help them to make reading selections, and promote the love of reading! Please join us. Students in Shloe Kerness's SSE 3312 Teaching Social Science in Elementary Schools class brought in a variety of artifacts that represented a themed lesson plan to be used in

elementary classrooms. One of the students brought in a live turkey to demonstrate the type of livestock that Native Americans raised in Florida. She raises turkeys on her farm and uses them in educational settings. This turkey, named Boy, received a Thanksgiving pardon long ago. HAPPY Hour Development Series Shloe Kerness, the Instructor/Internship Coordinator for the College of Education on the Cocoa Campus, hosted HAPPY Hour sessions for Education majors. College of Business Charles Viggiano's Cornerstone students at UCF Cocoa are conducting service-learning projects where they are raising money, collecting food, supplies, clothing, and raising awareness for Brevard area non-profit organizations. Some of these organizations include: Handlebars for the Holidays, Central Brevard Sharing Center, Veteran's Administration Outpatient Clinic, Liberation Surf and Skate Ministry, North Brevard Charities Sharing Centers, Deveraux, and Yellow Umbrella.

College of Nursing Greetings from the UCF College of Nursing (CON), Cocoa Campus. We have been very busy in our third semester, meeting demands for a full class load and clinical rotations. Our clinical rotations were held at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for: Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Labor & Delivery; and Palm Bay and Parrish Hospitals for Adult I. We’d like to thank all of our clinical instructors for working so hard to provide such an excellent learning experience. Our group has been actively participating in the community at such events as: the VA Stand Down in Titusville on September 18, 2010 for Brevard’s Veterans and homeless, The Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk in Cocoa Village on October 23, 2010, and Light Up the Night, in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Saturday, November 13, 2010. Our local chapter of the UCF Student Nurses Association (SNA) has also been very busy, planning fund raisers, community participation events, and budgeting for the big National Convention in Utah in April 2011. Upcoming events include a Christmas Party, Adopting a Study-Buddy from the incoming class, and a Christmas Toy Drive for the Holmes Regional Medical Center’s Pediatric Unit. Our campus achieved 100% registration at the FNSA convention in Daytona Beach October 28-29, 2010, and many positive comments were heard about this experience.

By far, it seems unanimous that the most inspirational speaker at the convention this year was Dr. Sally Karioth from FSU. Amy Dowling stated it was her favorite part of the convention because it made her realize, “what you can do (as a nurse) to change the lives of others.” Katie Valenti followed this up with, “ (Dr. Kairoth) had a way of getting a serious point across that could silence the whole room, and you KNOW that everyone was feeling what she was saying… it was really inspirational and reminded us of why were doing this.” Finally Jodi Mugele stated, “(Dr. Karioth) gave an amazing and quite encouraging speech....best part of the conference!” Congratulations to Barbara Green and Amber Major, who were both recipients of recent nursing scholarships. Barbara received the District 3 Scholarship from the Florida Nurses Association (FNA) Foundation on September 25, 2010 and Amber received a scholarship at this year’s FNSA convention in Daytona Beach. Furthermore, eight of our senior nursing students from the Cocoa Campus have added the challenge of participating in the UCF Honor’s in the Major Program (HIM). In addition, all of the Brevard 2010 graduates from the CON have taken their National licensing exam to become Registered Nurses, and the Campus pass rate was 100%!

College of Health and Public Affairs CourtWatch Brevard Nancy Dunwoody St. George, a UCF Cocoa senior in Legal Studies, founded CourtWatch Brevard. This organization allows UCF students to take their theoretical knowledge into actual courts to research and define injustices victims of domestic violence face when using the legal system that prevents victims from escaping violent relationships. Student interns compare and contrast judicial styles to find a jurisprudence that effectively halts further acts of domestic violence and child abuse critical to ending the cycle of violence. Detailed reports are released to the judges and the public periodically that specify decisive changes. These interns earn community service credit through VolunteerUCF. Thirty students have worked with the program to date. The CourtWatch Brevard website has gone through renovations thanks to UCF Digital Media senior David Smith and will be back up soon. Brevard Welcomes a New Visiting Professor Dr. Deborah Rhyne has joined the Southern Region as a visiting professor teaching both online and face-to-face courses. Dr. Rhyne is a long and loyal UCF supporter after having earned multiple degrees here: B.S. Criminal Justice (1974), M.A. Education (1988), and PhD. Curriculum and Instruction(1998). She also holds a M.A. in Criminal Justice from Rollins College in Winter Park. Dr. Rhyne brings 20 years of teaching experience and 17 years in law enforcement experience to our campus. Enrollment Services Kristina Watkins, Assistant Director of Cocoa Enrollment Services, gave a Financial Aid presentation at the BCC Collegiate High School workshop on September 24th, on the UCF Cocoa Campus. UCF Orlando staff also participated in the event. Shakira Guice, Direct Connect Advisor, and Kristina Watkins, along with student ambassadors, Jamesha Cox and Phyllicia Jarrett, talked with prospective students about the Direct Connect program at the International Sounds and Flavor Festival on September 25th at Wickham Park in Melbourne. The Palm Bay campuses hosted the monthly Regional Campus Enrollment Services meeting in October. Everyone enjoyed the Palm Bay campuses and appreciated the hospitality of the staff. The monthly meeting is held at a different campus each month, so that the Enrollment Services staff can become familiar with each campus. To show support for Breast Cancer awareness month the Enrollment Services staff wore pink to the meeting and had a group photo taken. UCF Cocoa and UCF Palm Bay sponsored Boo at the Zoo at the Brevard Zoo on Halloween weekend. Information about both campuses was disseminated to adults while the children were treated to candy. Four thousand three hundred and thirty (4,330) people attended the event.

Advising Center Angel Edgecombe, Cocoa Campus and John King, Palm Bay Campus advisors attended the annual Education breakfast on Tuesday Septmber 2, 2010 hosted by the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida which was held at the Holiday Inn in Viera. They set-up a table with resourceful information regarding programming and upcoming events. They also handed out brochures to many of those in attendance. Angie Jones and Sheryl Schagen UCF advisors on the Cocoa campus attended the "Launch Your Job Search" workshop at the Kennedy Space Center on September 22nd and 24th. They participated in the mini education fair by showing their wares to help those touched by the changes occurring in our Nation's Space program. On Thursday September 30, 2010, Angel Edgecombe, and on Wednesday October 20, 2010, Angie Jones, Cocoa Advisors attended the evening sessions of Brevard Community College's Community Workshop in Cocoa. They specifically presented at the "New Directions Seminar" that made students aware of the various opportunities in their neighborhood and the various resources available to them. In an effort to reach out to the transitioning workforce these events are designed primarily to assist displaced workers in navigating the retraining opportunities available to them, provide coping skills to deal with the anxiety and pressure of major life changes, as well as offer employment and retraining resources. Angie Jones visited DRS Tactical on Hibiscus in Melbourne and represented the UCF Cocoa Advising office in their

annual Education Fair held on Thursday, July 22 from 1-3 p.m., Angie set-up an informational table and shared vital educational opportunities with their staff. Retirement Our long time Program Assistant, Ms. Lynn Mitchell, here in the Cocoa Advising office is retired September 30, 2010 after over 10 years of service to UCF. We had a celebration with festivities including gifts, a magic show, flowers, and well wishes. We will miss Lynn's advice and knowledge on everything from flowers and cooking to every species of animal known to man. Student Services and Student Government RSO Orientation held @ UCF Cocoa and UCF Palm Bay On September 15, Regional Campuses Student Services hosted the 2010-11 RSO Orientation at both the UCF Cocoa and UCF Palm Bay Campus via polycom from Regional Campuses Headquarters in Orlando. Eleven officers representing six (6) Student Organizations (National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association, Psi Chi - Cocoa, Psi Chi - Palm Bay, Psychology Club - Cocoa, Psychology Club - Palm Bay and Student Nurses Association) attended this interactive session with Matthew Betz, Coordinator of the Office of Student Involvement as the facilitator. Completion of this session, along with submission of an Update Form and Financial Training satisfied the requirements for each to be a Registered Student Organization for 2010 - 11. On September 30, a follow-up session was facilitated by Jim Smith, Coordinator, Regional Campuses Student Services with the help of a pre-recorded session broadcast with Adobe Connect technology. Three (3) student organizations (NSSLHA, Student Council for Exceptional Children and the Single Parent Student Club) were represented by four (4) officers who attended this session. Mr. Smith completed each session with an overview of local policies, procedures and resources available to all student organizations at the UCF Cocoa and UCF Palm Bay campuses. The total attendees for both sessions were 15 representing all 7 current student organizations and one organization in the initial approval process with the Office of Student Involvement. UCF Cocoa and Palm Bay Transfer Orientation It seems hard to believe, but transfer orientation for spring admitted students is in full swing again. There are a steady stream of students registering for both the virtual orientation and on-campus orientation options. On-Campus Orientation dates are UCF Cocoa Tuesday, November 16, 2010 and Wednesday, January 5, 2010 and UCF Palm Bay Wednesday, December 1, 2010. All sessions are 9:00 to 1:00.
