In an article posted by UCF Today on June 6, 2013, Dr. Jones’ letter to the UCF search committee was quoted as saying, “My entire 28-year career has been devoted to serving regional campuses of state universities.” Jones wrote that his experience will help balance “the demands and desires of our local students, faculty and staff with the need to successfully collaborate within a large, complex university system.” Later the same day, Dr. Jones and Dr. Young met with the leadership of our partner institution Eastern Florida State College to discuss collaborations, mutual interests, and future initiatives. We appreciated Dr. Jones’s visit to our region and look forward to his leadership in continuing to improve the support and offerings we offer our students. You will need to go to the EFSC Cashier’s office (Cocoa: Bld 11, Rm 208; Palm Bay: Bld 1, Rm 135) and take your UCF ID card and your vehicle’s tag number.

Students are charged $20 plus tax for their permit which will expire on June 30 of the following year (ex. 2013-14 school year student permits expire on June 30, 2014). Faculty and staff receive free permits with no expiration date. Please place your permit on the left rear window or left rear bumper. You are REQUIRED to have a permit to park on the Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses. Unpermitted cars or cars with expired permits will be ticketed by EFSC security.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon In celebration of, and as a thank you to, the staff that make the UCF Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses so successful, catered luncheons were held on both campuses at the beginning of June. Regional Campuses administrators Interim Vice Provost Joyce Dorner, Dr. Stephen Holmes, and Dr. Pamela Cavanaugh, joined the Cocoa celebration. Thank you to our staff for all you do!
Happy 50th UCF The University of Central Florida is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. UCF began as Florida Technical University in June 1963 when Governor Bryant signed Legislative Bill 125. FTU grew and thrived under the careful guidance of Dr. Charles Millican, the first president, until his resignation in 1978. Later that year, Governor Askew signed legislation approving a name change to University of Central Florida. Dr. Millican was followed by Trevor Colbourn from 1979 to 1991. Our current president, Dr. John Hitt, stepped into office in 1992. Hitt has helped shepherd UCF from a small regional university to the second largest public university in the nation. He has proved there is nothing we cannot accomplish.
On May 15, the Cocoa campus, in partnership with our neighbor, Florida Solar Energy Center, hosted an Atlas Launch viewing party to celebrate 50 years of “reaching for the sun and stars in Brevard County.� A UCF cookie cake was served along with popcorn and fresh fruit. This gave the members of the two staffs a chance to mingle and get to know each other. The event also helped mark the 30th anniversary of the Cocoa campus. The Palm Bay campus also joined in the fun and hosted a concurrent Atlas Launch viewing party complete with Rocket Pops for refreshment. The Early Childhood Education majors joined staff at the party.
Faculty & Staff Achievements Three Cocoa & Palm Bay faculty members were among the 39 UCF faculty whose promotions were announced this summer: Nancy Brasel, associate instructor, Education; Dr. Jerome Randall, associate instructor, Criminal Justice; and, Dr. Karen Mottarella, associate lecturer, Psychology.
Krisann Draves, Nursing, received a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of South Alabama. Nancy Brasel, Education, was a recipient of the UCF Teaching Incentive Program award. continued on next page

Faculty & Staff Achievements continued Dr. Barbara Kinsey, Political Science, and Anca Turcu presented a paper, “Parties of the Left and the Burqa Ban: An Organizational/Electoral Competition Model,” at the 20th International Conference of Europeanists. Jacqueline LaManna, Nursing, received a PhD in Nursing from the University of Central Florida. Her dissertation was titled, “Acute and Intermediate Hospital-to-Home Transition Outcomes of Older Adults Diagnosed with Diabetes.” Dr. John Lynxwiler, Sociology, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association titled, "Religion, Spirituality, and Attitudes toward Same-Sex Marriage," which was coauthored with David Gay and Patrick Smith. An additional paper, "Cohort, Spirituality, and Religiosity: A Cross-Sectional Comparison," co-authored with David Gray was accepted for publication in the Journal of Religion & Society. Dr. Shelley M. Park, Philosophy, presented a keynote address at the conference for the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement, entitled “’Good’ (queer) mothers and ‘bad’ (queer) mothers: Contested representations of polygamist women in popular culture.” An earlier version of this work was presented in May 2013 at the Cultural Studies Association in May 2013. Her book, Mothering Queerly, Queering Motherhood: Resisting Monomaternalism in Adoptive, Lesbian, Blended and Polygamous Families was published by SUNY Press in June 2013. Leandra Preston-Sidler, Women’s Studies, received a UCF Teaching Incentive Program award. Dr. Adam Pritchard, Sociology, had his article, “Lethal and other serious assaults: Disentangling gender and context,” featured as a key article by the international website Psychology Progress. http:// psychologyprogress.com/lethal-and-other-seriousassaults-disentangling-gender-and-context/ Congratulations to Christine Suleski for her 20 years of service to UCF and Felipe Mendez for his 5 years of service. Angel Edgecombe has had two proposals accepted by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for presentation at the annual conference. UCF

The presentations are “How to Maximize Your Peer Mentor in a Classroom Environment,” and “Academic Advising and Career Development: Why they go hand in hand.” Angel was also accepted into the Diversity Track of the 2013 Summer Faculty Development Conference. Dr. Lauren Miller presented “Doing More with Less” at the 2013 Annual Florida Association of Branch Campus Administrators conference. She is also the treasurer and annual conference chair for FABCA. Nick Pantloni and Jessica Houts attended FACRAOFlorida Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers conference in July. Patricia Terrill and Sheryl Schagen participated in the Enrollment Services and Advising Services Staff Retreat on May 29, and the Student Services and Advising Services Staff Retreat on May 30 to discuss Strategic Planning. Andrew Todd was the winner of the 2013 Excellence in Librarianship Award. Barbara Thompson, Office of Diversity Initiatives, presented the diversity certificate series Race: The Power of Illusion at the Cocoa campus in June. Staff and faculty from Cocoa and Palm Bay participated along with staff members from Orlando. The following staff received certificates: Paula Cepero, Jim Costa, Elaine Cruz, Al Davis, Angel Edgecombe, Darlyne Egan, Megan Haught, Todd Jennings, Angie Jones, Darlene Kraft, Dan Miller, Dr. Lauren Miller, Lisa Leininger, Wendy Perez, Dr. Jerome Randall, Sheryl Schagen, Sue Sorensen, and Teresa Youngman. Barbara Thompson also presented a session on “The Purity Myth” for Cocoa and Palm Bay faculty and staff. Environmental Health and Safety conducted an American Red Cross CPR certification class on the Cocoa campus for faculty and staff. In attendance (and receiving certification) were Elaine Cruz, Cara Dixon, Megan Haught, Wendy Perez, Christine Suleski and Teresa Youngman.

Community Involvement Dr. Deborah Rhyne, Criminal Justice, volunteered over 100 hours with the Brevard Public Schools for the 2012-2013 school year preparing and proctoring FCAT testing, working in the classroom with teachers, chaperoning field trips, and working in the media center for which she earned a Volunteer Certificate. She also volunteers with her granddaughter, Kendyll, at the North Brevard SPCA as a “Bark Buddy.” They walk dogs and assist with adoption events at PetCo on Saturdays. Sue Sorensen volunteered to clear trash out of Constitutional Bicentennial Park, Nicole Park, and along the Pineda and Melbourne causeways for Brevard County Parks and Recreation.

If you were able to CC or BCC them, it would end up in their calendar, probably not a desirable option. A work-a-round is to: Create the meeting and send it to attendees. Open the appointment Go to Actions | Forward message. In the To: line, send this to whoever needs to know that the meeting is happening, but do not plan on attending.

College of Arts & Humanities/College of Sciences The College of Sciences would like to welcome two new faculty members to the Cocoa campus: Dr. Marisol Parra in Psychology, and Dr. Hyung Sam Park in Sociology. Dr. Parra previously taught at Florida Atlantic University and the University of Alabama and her dissertation was titled, “False recognition driven by semantic and lexical similarity: A manifestation of the interaction of two languages in bilingual memory.” Dr. Park comes to UCF Cocoa from University of Texas at San Antonio, East Tennessee State University, and Texas A&M. His dissertation was titled, “A Longitudinal Analysis of the Environmental Movement Sector's Litigation Network in the United States 1970-2001."
College of Nursing The Student Nurses Association elected new junior officers. The first SNA event will be a back to school event on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Health screening and health education will be provided for the north Brevard County community through a joint effort with United Methodist church. The senior cohort of Nursing students graduated at the end of the Summer term on August 3, 2013.
Cocoa & Palm Bay Social Media Team Facebook tips: Keep information accurate and current. Maintain a constant and a consistent presence on the site at least 35% of Facebook users are over 35 years of age; users spend 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook; 200 million active Facebook users access the site through their mobile devices; and Facebook is the second most frequently visited site on the Internet (after Google) Twitter boasts more than 175 million users, who send out more than 95 million messages per day. Twitter messages – "tweets" – are limited to 140 characters. Tweets should be concise and to the point.

Enrollment Services Nick Pantloni and Sonya Curtis attended Brevard Workforce training events in Rockledge and Palm Bay to share information about Regional Campuses with over 80 Brevard Workforce employees. Enrollment Services held Knights Connect Application Day on July, 26th to assist students with the UCF application process, financial aid, and completing their Fall 2013 applications. Sarah Sacra and Nick Pantloni staffed an information table set up in front of the EFSC bookstore the first week of summer classes to provide information and to answer student questions.
August 1st, was Sarah Sacra’s last day with Enrollment Services. Sarah has worked with us since August of 2011, and is now moving on to pursue her Master’s Degree at the Orlando campus where she will continue to work for UCF as a graduate assistant in the Department of Sociology. During her time with us, she has assisted with office functions providing much needed coverage during our transition with new staff changes, attended job fairs, coordinated classroom visits, created how-to-flyers, attended welcome back events at EFSC and UCF, assisted with Direct Connect, and as always, has assisted with the many individual student requests that we get every day. UCF Joint Use Library New! Alexander Street Press Streaming Video Collections Alexander Street Press (ASP) is a respected academic publisher of award-winning, online collections and videos for scholarly research, teaching, and learning. They are notable for their excellent production, quality editorial standards, and commitment to comprehensive coverage of topics. The agreement allows fair use of the content for educational purposes, including embedding links into Canvas webcourses. Access is available off campus with EZproxy. Just check the library catalog, Alexander Street Press database, or OneSearch to locate a video. They are viewable on the web using a browser and standard plug-ins. They can be streamed to mobile devices. This page, http://guides.ucf.edu/aspvideos, gives some visuals on embedding a video or clip. If you do this within a webcourse, students are already logged in and can click on the link to view. Collections include: American History, Ethnographic, Art and Architecture, Counseling and Therapy Volumes I and II (more than 700 titles), Education (about 4000 titles), New World Cinema, Filmakers Library, LGBT Studies, Nursing Education (about 300 titles), and World History. Only some of the films are captioned in the traditional sense (as in, captioned at the bottom of the screen) and that includes the films in New World Cinema. For the other films the transcript does scroll synchronously with the video, but to the right side of, or, coming soon, below the film. Not all of the films have a transcript yet, but eventually they all will. If you need online or in-person library instruction, or have any questions about the streaming videos, we’re here to assist you. Additionally, if you have any recommendations for items to purchase for the library (books, ebooks, dvds, or streaming video titles), please send your ideas to us. New Additions Paula Cepero began her new position as a Program Assistant in Academic Advising in July. Prior to this position, she worked for UCF under a FIPSE Grant as the Veteran Services Program Specialist in Cocoa.
Darlyne Egan was hired in May to fill our new USPS Program Assistant position in the Cocoa Student Services Office. Since March 2008, she had served as an OPS Program Assistant in the same office. Darlyne previously worked at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the School of Medicine’s Center for Clinical Skills and in the Cooperative Education Program.
