SPRING 2013
A MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM VICE PROVOST Anticipating the end of the spring semester and the academic year provides a time to reflect on Regional Campuses’ accomplishments over the past several months. There have been many, thanks to the efforts of everyone. UCF Valencia Osceola staff started the spring semester in the new Osceola Building 4. The new facility opened with five new staff and five new faculty members and the semester started without a hitch. Plans are to continue adding to the staffing and faculty over the next few months as budget allows. I want to extend appreciation to everyone who played a role in getting UCF’s portion of the building prepared for students within a short period of time. Advising and Student Services were effectively merged at the beginning of the spring semester. A search was initiated for an Assistant Vice Provost for Advising and Student Services and interviews will be occurring soon. AVP’s, directors, advisors and student service personnel all made significant contributions to the merging process and that initiative is well underway.
The College Access Summit was held this past week, with a focus on advising integration. It was wonderful to see the large number attending this year, with broad representation of individual colleges, K-12, and our partnering community and state colleges. Productive discussions occurred within various STEM and other majors, focusing on student success in completion of their educational pathways. The search interviews for the Vice Provost for Regional Campuses have been completed, and we anticipate an announcement as to the new appointment sometime soon. Due to the efforts of many, the new Vice Provost will inherit a Regional Campuses system with a well-defined vision, mission, goals, and initiatives. On a personal note, as we anticipate the arrival of a new Vice Provost, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing commitment and dedication to Regional Campuses and to the numerous contributions you make on a daily basis. I consider myself so very fortunate to have had the pleasure and opportunity of working with you over the past three years, and I look forward to continuing a working relationship with you in the future. - Joyce
O F F I C E O F A C A D E M I C I N I T I AT I V E S As the spring semester for 2013 comes to a close, we all have a lot to be thankful for. First, the revenue lost as a result of last year’s budget cuts is being restored. Second, the drastic cuts to our summer schedule have dissipated. In addition, we have done a lot of research over the past six months and have assessed every line and program at each campus. It should be noted that not once did we consider eliminating lines as a means of meeting our budget goals. I think this stands as a testament to all you do. The College of Education did propose the discontinuance of the “early childhood” program at three locations and at the main campus. However, no one at the Regional Campuses will lose his/her job. Working closely with the College of Education and their administrative core, our faculty members will be able to retain their positions: one faculty member will be assigned to UCF Seminole, spearheading the new track in early childhood education, and the other two will be joining the faculty at their respective campuses.

The State of Florida appears to be heading toward a new model for online education, a project that has been under study for the past year. The University of Florida has been selected to head up this new endeavor. While details have not been completely worked out, we are told that existing web-based programs will not be affected and will continue to operate automously at their host institutions. As a result, two of our largest programs are now set to announce that students will be able to complete a baccalaureate degree online in both psychology and criminal justice. Over the last three months, we have been involved in the search for a new viceprovost for Regional Campuses. Cece Rivers and I are privileged to be serving on the search committee. Two finalists have been brought back to campus for a followup visit. While we don’t know which candidate will be chosen, we feel certain that both are accomplished administrators who can step in right away and not miss a beat.
F L O R I D A
And, finally, we are beginning to place the finishing touches on faculty hires at Valencia-Osceola. This fall we will be adding positions in biomedical sciences, criminal justice and religious studies. We are very excited about completing these faculty staffing obligations at our new location. I know we don’t say this often enough but we, at Regional Campuses Headquarters, want to thank the faculty and staff for everything they do that makes UCF one of the best places in the country to work. I don’t think I have ever been around a more dedicated group of people who truly put the students at the center of everything they do. For this— and the opportunity to work with you— my sincere thanks. - Stephen Holmes

COLLEGE ACCESS SUMMIT April 1, 2013 Joyce Dorner, UCF Vice Provost, welcomed the 130 attendees to the 7th annual College Access Summit. The theme of the day was implementation and integration of advising for completion; hereafter to be referenced as Advising Alignment. Joyce introduced Ann McGee, President of Seminole State College, who shared with the audience the importance of DirectConnect to UCF to the community, the state and to the nation as a model for partnership. Dr. McGee is the only president who has attended all seven of the College Access Summits. To begin discussions on the future of higher education, Deborah Bradford, UCF Regional Campuses, introduced Professor Rosa Cintron, who pulled out her crystal ball and actively engaged the audience in discussing “the good, the bad and the ugly” as possibilities regarding the future of higher education. Building on the big picture of higher education, the future work environment was addressed by C. Mike Newton, CEO & Founder of CYBERfacturing. Mike shared the brave new world of integrating both creative and technical learning as the next step in producing a viable work force. “Baseline data STEM data from admission through completion” was presented by Sandra Archer, UCF UAPS. Balancing out the use of data for informed decision-making, Joyce Romano, VP Valencia, addressed a quantitative focus group study on how students at various steps in their pathways are experiencing their college and UCF experience. Moving from the big picture to data, the audience was asked to begin their work by addressing integration of academic advising at each step in the student’s pathway. The work groups were divided into general academic discipline areas determined by the data presented on the most popular academic areas. Ten areas reported out by answering four basic questions. Integration of advising models will be addressed through another work group under the DirectConnect to UCF umbrella. Three additional work groups were facilitated during the afternoon sessions using questions to guide their work and reports. The Johnson Scholarship Foundation “Scholars” program, the Resource Working Group, and the FL DOE/FCS 30-hour plan designed basic precepts for developing the next steps. Ange Peterson, UCF facilitator, led the round table report-outs. The College Access Summit information is available at www.collegeaccess.ucf.edu Joyce Dorner, Vice Provost, UCF Regional Campuses, closed the Summit with a round of thanks to participants and added an additional P=Prediction: “We need to lead rather than follow.”

STUDENT SERVICES and ADVISING Student Services and Advising professionals continue teaming together to engage our students and create experiences for their success and retention. The “can do” attitude of all concerned to provide access, service and coaching for prospective students and current students is evident with the flexibility of scheduling programs, activities and appointments. In the ongoing transition of integrating the two areas, the staff have taken leadership roles and shifted work areas to compensate for needed coverage. It has been a dynamic year of change and the vision for this unit within Regional Campuses and UCF is getting brighter. WELCOME TO THE RECENTLY APPOINTED COORDINATORS OF ACADEMIC ADVISING:
• Patricia Terrill, Southern Region • Crystal Flynn, Western Region • Robin Tinsley, Western Region • Kim Martinez, Central Region Special congratulations to Lisa Cruz, Assistant Director of Advising, for her new role in Central Region as she leads her team of advisors. NOTABLE HAPPENINGS
• NASPA held its national conference at the World Marriott Convention Center in March. Attendees from Regional Campuses included Angie Jones, Sheryl Schagen, Raphel Robinson, Darryl Greely, Pam Brady, Tanya Armstrong, Melissa Hanbery, Jim Smith, Carol Black, Ashley Squillante, Sean Armstrong, and Pam Cavanaugh. • Patricia Terril was recognized at AEP (Academic Enhancement Program) for completion of the Advising Fundamentals courses through CANVAS. • Angel Edgecombe and Angie Jones graduated from Supervisory Skills Series. • Pam Cavanaugh published “Florida Forges K-20 Access and Success” in AAC&U (Association of American Colleges and Universities) Fall 2012 Ramping Up for STEM Success: Pathways for Student Transfer. • Regional Campuses and Transfer and Transition Services hosted a NACADA-sponsored webinar, Advising Transfer Students: Strategies for Today’s Realities and Tomorrow’s Challenges, based on the newly edited monograph by the same name for advising colleagues on campus.
• Pam Cavanaugh and Chanda Torres, Assistant Vice President, Student Development and Enrollment Services, will co-chair the Transfer Success Committee, established to define transfer issues facing our students and to develop a plan to promote transfer success, progress, and graduation. SERVING SPECIAL POPULATIONS IN THE REGION
Student Services has worked diligently on new systems and processes with Student Disability Services (SDS) to provide more effective and efficient accommodations for students in need. Regional Campuses has partnered very closely with the SDS on integrating these systems. We have also worked closely with VARC in reaching out to our veterans. Dr. Bryan Batien has coordinated visits with the mobile veterans unit and hosted meetings with faculty and staff to orient them to the special needs of our veterans. We are grateful for our collaborative working relationship with VARC to enhance programming and services for our veterans. Regional Campuses staff and other VARC collaborators recently viewed “Serving Student Veterans in Higher Education.” DIVERSITY PROGRAMMING
Regional Campuses has championed diversity programming for its campuses through student programming and professional development for its staff. As part of the Diversity Initiatives team, we find ways to integrate their work with our plans. Barbara Thompson has the passion and commitment to assist us through personal visits to our campuses or by virtue of broadcasting the Diversity breakfast and Diversi-Tea sessions. Most recently, the broadcast of “Conversations about Africa” was exceptional and well received on our campuses. ACADEMIC SUPPORT
KnightsPrep, an academic support and pre-orientation advising program initially launched in the Central Region, has now been adopted by all the regions for use as a primer for students to get acquainted with online courses and other academic support information prior to meeting with an advisor and attending Orientation.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY With the merger of Regional Campuses and Division of Continuing Education, it became apparent the skill sets of the respective IT teams were highly complementary and there were synergies to be realized by blending the two teams and infrastructure together to better support the entire organization. Many of the accomplishments you’ll see below are the direct result of the incredible enthusiasm demonstrated by members of all RC-DCE IT working together as a team.
DCE IT DCE IT has been busy supporting CE initiatives and upgrading their unit specific capacities. Martin, Marcos, Christine, Ricardo, and Daniel began spring semester by putting the finishing touches on the new DCE facility, completing the transition that started in October when DCE moved from its former location to the new facility in the Innovation Center.

FACES BEHIND RCA FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING The faces behind Regional Campuses business and finance operations are Joe Schofield, Director Budget and Finance; Sonia Ugran, Coordinator of Accounting; and Sharon Littleton, Accountant. Among the three of them, virtually every expenditure throughout the RC’s is reviewed.
RC BROADCAST TEAM RC IT broadcasts events from the Orlando campus to all regions for the benefit of students, staff, and faculty. For the majority of these broadcasts the “man behind the curtain” is Eric Nielson. He has hauled broadcast equipment all over central Florida this year, at times on short notice, to ensure the regions have real time on-line access to the events occurring in Orlando or other regional locations. This year Eric takes home RC Best Producer, Director, Audio Engineering, Roadie, and best makeup/special effects awards for his work on multiple productions.

Continuing Education held a retreat at the Stoneybrooke Country Club on March 5. Our facilitator was Mark Tooms, a CE instructor and corporate trainer with Training Edge. We spent the day learning about communication and team building. We will hold a wrap up with Mark this month to review our DiSC assessments and each other’s communication styles.
HALF MARATHON AT WALT DISNEY WORLD Members of the CE staff also volunteered for the Half Marathon at Walt Disney World. Chris Rose, who has been participating for 5 years, was joined by several other staff members. They volunteer as a subgroup under the Fiserv Team that was started back in 2007. Their shift started at 3:30am— yes, that is AM! The group was responsible for the water/ PowerAde stop for all the runners that morning—setting up tables, stacking cups, making the PowerAde and distributing to runners, and disposing of trash and recycled items. This year there were 27,000 runners for the event. Plans are underway to initiate a separate UCF team next year, if we have at least 10 participants.
Our group this year consisted of the following: Louise Conine, Austin and Ashlee Companion, Amanda McCarthy, Kourtney Dinkins, Tobias King, Chris Rose, Kayla Rose (Chris’ daughter) and Monica Butcher.
Bunnie McPeek, administrative assistant, has retired after 16 years of service to UCF. We celebrated with a staff luncheon at a local restaurant where we presented Bunnie with a Kindle Fire and an album of photographs taken over the years. WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING “Mimi, you truly have a gift when it comes to preparing future law school students for the LSAT. The most beneficial part of your course, for me, was the importance you placed on teaching all of us that we CAN conquer this test. You eliminated so much of the fear that I previously had over this test, because you took the time to not only hammer in the practice, but to guide us on the psychology of the test. I know that I would not have been given that extra guidance at any other prep course.” (LSAT - The Law School Admissions Test Review Program)

CAMPUS NEWS STUDENT SERVICES A total of 27 participants attended the Diversity Certificate Series which began in March. This is the first time the Diversity Certificate Series (aka “Continuum of Life”) has been offered at the Central Region and turn-out has been excellent. Several UCF West instructors have supported the series by encouraging their students to attend. Participants must attend all four of the 2-hour sessions in order to earn the certificate. Students can use the certificate to build their resume and demonstrate their understanding of working with diverse groups of people while UCF staff can gain professional development certification. Barbara Thompson, Office of Diversity Initiatives, was the facilitator/presenter of the above-mentioned series; the group included 21 UCF students, two from Valencia College, and four UCF staff members. A second Diversity Series is planned for the fall 2013 at the UCF Valencia West campus. 13 education students have already indicated their commitment to attend. STARS The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program previously did not have a system in place to assist students who were having difficulties achieving academic success. The Student Tracking Alert Retention Systems (STARS) is designed to identify “at risk” BAS students who are in danger of not completing their program, being disqualified or withdrawing from the university. Working with basic data, advisors will be able to track these students and provide assistance. Assessments and completion surveys built into the program provide feedback on the students’ perception of their academic situation and the program in general. STARS was launched in March 2013 with the help and support of Regional Campuses advisors.
