Maroons Coaching Staff Head Coach Mike McGrath Mike McGrath starts his 18th season as head men’s basketball coach at the University of Chicago in 2016-17. He is the school’s all-time leader in wins with an overall record of 254-178, including a 150-90 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. A three-time UAA Coach of the Year, McGrath has guided UChicago to a NCAA Division III Elite Eight berth and Sweet 16 appearance, as well as four UAA titles. McGrath garnered UAA Coach of the Year accolades in 2007-08 after leading the Maroons to their second-straight UAA championship and NCAA Division III tournament appearance. UChicago, which finished 18-8 overall and 11-3 in conference play, ranked 25th in the final D3hoops.com poll. In 2000-01, McGrath guided the Maroons to their best-ever NCAA Division III finish, as UChicago advanced to the Elite Eight round of the national tournament. McGrath enjoyed a highly-successful debut campaign in 1999-00, as he led the Maroons to a 23-4 record, the UAA title and a NCAA Division III Sweet 16 appearance. Over his career at UChicago, McGrath has been named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Coach of the Year four times – 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008. McGrath spent seven years as an assistant coach to Pat Cunningham from 1992-99. During that time, McGrath helped lead the Maroons to an overall record of 107-73 (.594), including an 82-23 mark (.781) from 1995-99. Under Cunningham and McGrath, UChicago garnered two UAA championships and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 on two occasions. During McGrath’s 24 years as head and assistant coach, UChicago teams have compiled a combined record of 361-251 (.590), won six conference championships, and made six national postseason appearances. McGrath is a 1992 graduate of DePauw University, where he spent three years as a student assistant coach. During his tenure at DePauw, the Tigers advanced to the 1990 NCAA Division III championship game. In 2003, McGrath and the other members of that team were inducted into the DePauw Athletics Hall of Fame. A native of Bartlett, Ill., McGrath earned a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 2004. He resides in Chicago with his wife, Kari.

Assistant Coach Jason Petti Jason Petti enters his sixth season with the UChicago staff in 2016-17. He previously served as volunteer assistant coach for two seasons and was named a full-time assistant coach in May 2013. Petti’s responsibilities include coordinating the recruiting efforts, player development and scouting of opponents. Over his past three years as a full-time assistant coach, the Maroons have a cumulative record of 48-27. A graduate of North Central College, where he earned a degree in exercise science, Petti spent three years coaching at WheatonWarrenville South High School prior to joining the Maroons. During those three years, Petti served as a varsity assistant and head coach of the freshman team for three seasons. Jason lives in Chicago with his fiancé, Kendra.

Assistant Coach Bryan Joel Bryan Joel is entering his second season with the UChicago men’s basketball staff in 2016-17 as an Assistant Coach. He has been involved in recruiting, player development, game planning, scouting and statistical analysis as part of his coaching duties. He finished third all-time in three-point field goal percentage, third all-time in steals and fifth alltime in assists. He is also in the top 10 for three-point percentage in a season and steals in a season. Joel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and is currently getting his master’s degree in sports predictive analytics from Northwestern University.

Ratner Athletics Center In the fall of 2003, UChicago Athletics entered a new era with the opening of the $51 million Gerald Ratner Athletďťżics Center. Designed by famed architect Cesar Pelli, and named for Gerald Ratner (an outfielder at UChicago), the 150,000square-foot facility includes a 1,658-seat competition gymnasium which is home to the UChicago basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams. In addition to the competition gymnasium, the facility features the 50-meter Myers-McLoraine Pool, the Bernard J. DelGiorno Fitness Center, a dance room, classrooms, the Athletics Hall of Fame, locker rooms and offices. In 13 years under Head Coach Mike McGrath, the Maroons have posted a 112-50 overall record and a 65-26 UAA mark at Ratner.

Maroons Summer Work Alex Gustafson Worked At: Belvedere Trading As An: Education and Training Intern “I worked as the Education and Training Intern at Belvedere Trading. I worked for Belvedere last summer and had a truly great experience, so I decided I wanted to come back and do it all over again ... I’m definitely looking forward to having a new role in the same company. I think it will hopefully help broaden my experience, while still enjoying the culture I already know I love, here at Belvedere.”

Tyler Howard Worked At: Stout Risius Ross As An: Investment Banking Summer Analyst “I worked as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst for Stout Risius Ross (SRR). Last summer I applied and got accepted into a three-day finance program at SRR. I was then offered an internship for summer 2016 ... I chose to get into investment banking because I wanted to try something new and challenging ... During my time at SRR this summer, I look most forward to learning more about a wide range of different industries, as well as getting a hands on experience with several projects.”

Blaine Crawford Worked At: Sidley Austin LLP As A: Summer Project Assistant “I chose this particular internship because I was interested in getting experience working in a law firm as well as insight into litigation, establishing connections in the field, and working with legal practitioners first hand ... I was able to secure this great opportunity through networking. In terms of what I’m looking forward to most, I would say just learning from everyone around me, along with working on projects that I can see the outcomes in (ex. actual court cases). I was interested in getting a close look at the intersection between law, corporations, and politics and I feel that Sidley is one of the best places to do just that.”

Waller Perez Worked At: Ariel Investments As A: Summer Intern, Equity Research “I chose this particular internship first, because it was in Chicago. Also, I believe it is going to give me an immense opportunity to learn about how to provide a recommendation in order to buy/sell a stock. Overall, I knew some of the skills I would learn could be applicable to other areas in finance likewise. I was able to secure this internship through networks within our basketball program and I am very thankful for this opportunity ... I look forward to learning financial modeling, and being able to fully understand the thought process of some of the strategies used to make a decision on whether to invest in a stock or not. I also look forward to hear about people’s experiences within the firm in order to learn and grow from them.”

Maroons Summer Work Collin Barthel Worked For: Anthem Inc. As A: Summer Analyst, Investment Management Group “The way I approached trying to receive an opportunity like this was networking early in the year. My roommates/ teammates and I were extremely proactive in doing our research and applying to internships that had strong upsides and ones we knew would help us in the future. This opportunity working in investments and learning about finance was the right fit for me ... What I’m looking forward to the most is gaining a strong foundation in the finance industry and understanding what type of time commitment and work ethic is necessary in the world of investments and asset management.”

Jake Fenlon Worked At: Bank of America Merrill Lynch As A: Wealth Management Intern “Well, securing an internship for this summer involved cold-emailing as many firms as I could. This particular opportunity, however, arose in a funny way. A few member of my family were eating out at a restaurant and they happened to meet a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. After a quick conversation the advisor gave them his business card, I reached out to him, and the rest is history. So it actually ended up being a much easier process than I had anticipated ... I am looking forward to learning as much information as I possibly can. There is a lot to know in finance and I am in the process of sifting through it all and determining what I am most interested in pursuing after college. This summer will be a great opportunity to finally gain hands on experience in the field.”

Ryan Shearmire Worked For: Lakeshore Food Advisors As An: Investment Banking Summer Analyst “I secured this internship by cold calling many, many investment banks. Most investment banks do not offer internships after sophomore year so I had to be proactive to receive an interview. I chose Lakeshore because I loved the small firm feel not only for its collegial atmosphere, but I feel I will learn the most at a leaner firm ... First and foremost I look forward to seeing if investment banking is right for me. But I’m also curious to learn not only the hard banking skills, but also the soft skills that I can use in any career in the future. Plus I love meeting new people and it will be nice to spend the summer in Chicago.”

“Besides being assets on the court, our student-athletes also make sure that they succeed in the real world. By taking a rigorous course load and studying hard, they position themselves to attain highly sought after internships and jobs.” - Head Coach Mike McGrath

Maroons Foreign Travel

UChicago in Australia in 2015

UChicago in Australia in 2015

Traveling to exciting destinations, both international and domestic, has been a significant feature of the UChicago basketball program. Most recently, the Maroons men’s and women’s basketball teams made a joint trip to Australia and New Zealand in September 2015. The trip to Australia and New Zealand is the fourth trip the Maroons have made, having also been to Italy in 2006, Argentina and Chile in 2009 and Ireland in 2012. “From a team standpoint, these trips accomplish two goals,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike McGrath. “The players and coaches develop a stronger connection to one another while traveling in a foreign country and stepping outside of their comfort zone. On the court, the chance to compete in international play and the additional 10 days of practice prior to the trip really has an impact on our development as a team. “Additionally, a trip like this is an amazing cultural experience,” continued McGrath. “This isn’t a vacation. And we won’t only be playing basketball. There will be a lot of fun and basketball will be a focus, but much of what we’ll be doing is centered around learning about a different culture, which is a huge part of the University of Chicago experience. The guys will also get to be a part of something that many players before them did too; this will further build the connection between past and present Maroons, and contribute to what it means to be a basketball player at UChicago.” The team visited Queenstown and Christchurch in New Zealand, and Cairns and Sydney in Australia, where they had many great experiences on the trip. First, they went zip lining and took an ATV tour of the mountains in Queenstown. In Christchurch, there were a youth clinic, games against Canterbury, and dinner with the players on the opposing team. The highlight in Cairns was a snorkel/scuba cruise to the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a beach trip, getting up close with kangaroos and koalas at the zoo, and a team cookout along the ocean. Sydney afforded a trip to Bondi Beach, surfing lessons at Manly Beach, climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge, a tour of the Sydney Opera House, and an amazing seafood dinner on the last night. The generosity of UChicago’s basketball alumni made the trip possible for the current players and staff. “Opportunities like these are possible because of the generosity of our alumni,” explained McGrath. “Our former players are very proud of the experience that they had at UChicago and want the current team to have the greatest opportunities possible while playing here. Most importantly, our alumni made great friends here and they want to help these guys develop the same connections.” On the final day in Australia, senior Jordan Smith reflected on the trip, “As the trip came to a close, it was clear to all of us that we would remember every moment of the past 14 days for the rest of our lives. We grew as individuals and as a team by taking some of our biggest fears head on and stepping out of our comfort zones at every opportunity. We couldn’t be more appreciative and thankful for the incredible experience. Go Maroons!”

Maroons Season Travel

Travel during the season is a fun and unique opportunity for basketball players at the University of Chicago. During league play, the team travels annually to Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, New York, Pittsburgh, Rochester (N.Y.) and St. Louis. Every year, the Maroons have the chance to stay in hotels in the heart of these cities, giving them the chance to explore each place. There are also additional perks, such as alumni dinners with former Maroons in Atlanta, Boston and New York. This is a great way to not only embrace the culture of the place they have traveled to, but also connect with Maroon basketball alumni. “I love spending time with the current players – hearing the stories, challenges, and struggles of trying to be a student athlete in 2016,” explained Eric Nelson, Class of 2000. “It’s funny to me how similar things are, even if it’s 15 years later. I have had the chance to meet some great kids over the past few years, and look forward to seeing Mike and the gang each winter.” “Sitting down over dinner with the team is the perfect opportunity to relive the glory days,” said Scott Green, Class of 2004. “I have an absolute blast trading stories, with only modest exaggeration, about Coach McGrath and the program. It really reinforces the University of Chicago basketball family.” “The dinner in Boston is a great opportunity to connect with the young men and women who are going through the same experience that was so pivotal in my own life,” said Craig Kelleher, Class of 1999. “Getting to know them personally really makes watching their journey enjoyable.” The current players love it too. “One of my favorite parts about traveling to large cities such as New York, Boston, and Atlanta is going out to eat with alums,” said senior guard Tyler Howard. “It’s great to exchange stories with them about their playing days and their current career lives. I always leave those dinners wanting to be in their shoes one day.” “Traveling was definitely a factor in my decision to commit,” stated sophomore forward Ryan Jacobsen. “Being able to fly to places like New York and Atlanta for games and getting a chance to explore those cities and get dinner with the alumni who live there is a great experience.” Additionally, the program has been fortunate enough to travel to various other cities for non-conference games and tournaments over the years. In 2016-17 for example, the team will be taking its third trip to Memphis during Coach McGrath’s tenure. It is an adventure the Maroons love to embark on, as it includes stops such as the Civil Rights Museum, enjoying the music on Beale Street and indulging in some southern barbecue. “When I’m graduated from UChicago, I think looking back on traveling with my best friends will be among the most memorable,” said sophomore guard Noah Karras. “I’m looking forward to going to Memphis this year for sure!” Recently the team has also traveled to Seattle where they got to experience the sights and sounds of Pikes Market, the beauty of Mount Rainier and some delicious seafood. The Maroons have visited Baltimore as well, which included a captivating tour of the White House, monuments and Congress, and some tremendous soft-shelled crab. “Some of my favorite parts about traveling during the season have been the trips we’ve taken in November (Washington D.C. in 2014, Seattle in 2015),” recalled senior guard Alex Gustafson. “Visiting the White House was an incredible experience and one that all of us are extremely grateful for. Seattle provided some beautiful scenery and unique exploration that brought us even closer as a team.” “One of my favorite team trips was our thanksgiving tournament in Seattle,” Howard said. “We got to explore Mt. Rainier and downtown Seattle, then ate thanksgiving dinner as a team; that is something I’ll never forget.” Over the years, the program has also provided trips to Cleveland, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and San Antonio. “The best part of our schedule is the UAA allows us to compete in one of the top conferences in the country,” said Jim Waichulis, Class of 2001. “Traveling the distance and to the cities we do, only makes the games more challenging. The opportunity to see and experience different places and cultures is an added bonus. The fact that our team gets to connect with so many of our former players enhances the culture of our basketball program and that it transcends many eras.” The one-of-a-kind experience that the Maroons get to be a part of while traveling during the season is both why many players were attracted to the program in the first place, as well as become some of the best memories the guys have as alumni. “Travel during the season was a tremendous opportunity to grow as a team and see different parts of the country,” recalled Tom Watson, Class of 2009. “Looking back at it, you really appreciate this opportunity to travel together and realize that not many college student athletes at any level get that chance. Even when travel took you away from family during the holiday breaks, the players and coaches created a space to celebrate together and be thankful for the opportunities given to us.”

Maroons in the Community

UChicago Men’s Basketball with Disney Elementary students

UChicago Men’s Basketball at Relay For Life

Service work and engagement in the community have been important aspects of the basketball program at the University of Chicago over the last 20 years. The team has participated in a number of activities, most significantly in the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life”, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) “Ticket to Reading Rewards” program, and youth basketball clinics in Argentina, Ireland and New Zealand while on foreign trips. “Both ‘Ticket’ and ‘Relay’ were very positive experiences for our program,” said Head Coach Mike McGrath. “Through ‘Relay’, the team was able to raise thousands of dollars for cancer research, while also advocating for activities like various forms of cancer screenings. A few years ago, the team had a number of players who had been directly impacted by cancer in their immediate family. “Ticket was a program that was coordinated by the NABC and Arne Duncan, who at the time was the director of the Chicago Public Schools system. The concept was to go to schools and have athletes discuss the value of reading and promote literacy. Students at these schools were given tickets to college basketball games as a reward for reading books. Research had shown that the percentage of middle school students that attended college increased exponentially when they actually stepped on a college campus; basketball and reading where designed to be the conduit for this. The team enjoyed this participation and hundreds of students attending UChicago basketball games as a result.” In part due to the success of Ticket participation, the Maroons have started a new service initiative this season that has already been tremendously successful. The team is serving as “mentors” to 36 students at Disney Elementary, a Chicago Public School. The collaboration, developed by Coach McGrath and former Maroon player Paul Riskus (who recently became an assistant principal at the school while completing his PhD in education after graduating from UChicago in 2011), has thus far been an excellent experience for both groups. “The mentorship partnership provides our boys the opportunity to see the importance of balancing academics and education,” explained Riskus. “After spending a day with their U of C mentors at the university, our students begin to see themselves as college men. The impact this has had on our middle school participants is unquestionable; the advice, exposure, and confidence that the U of C mentors provide our students is creating a lasting effect on their lives.” “Meeting with the students from Disney Elementary for the first time was an incredible experience,” recalled senior Tyler Howard. “It was great to hear about their future aspirations and how excited they were to participate in the mentoring program. Our hope for this program is to be role models for the students, and show them firsthand the benefits of going to college and being a part of an athletic team. At the same time, I think our team can learn a lot from the students and their optimistic, positive attitudes on life.”

Ticket to Reading Rewards

Howard was not alone in describing mentoring as a two-way street. Junior teammate Jake Fenlon agreed. “Mentorship has served an invaluable role in my life thus far,” Fenlon said. “I have been fortunate enough to develop relationships with several of my older peers, resulting in the guidance of my decision-making and the establishment of long-term goals. The education and advice I have received from these people have been pivotal in my personal development. I am grateful for these relationships and I would love to pay it forward by providing a similar experience for my younger peers.” Sophomore Justin Jackson also marveled over the experience. “Meeting all of the kids was a great experience; they were so excited to talk to us about school, basketball and college life at 7:45 AM that it put a smile on my face,” Jackson said. “We got into small groups and discussed their athletic and academic aspirations and gave them tips on how to make those dreams come true. All of the kids that we met with were selected by their teachers after applying to the program, so everyone was all ears. It truly was amazing to have kids really care about what you had to say and it put what we do day in and day out into perspective.” As for first-year Sam Sustacek, he cannot wait to dive deeper into the program. “Going to Disney was an awesome experience, and having them at practice was really fun for everyone,” said Sustacek. “We met a bunch of extremely smart and funny kids, and I’m really excited to continue this program. We get to show the kids a really great team and group of guys and connect with them through basketball, and I’m fortunate to have that opportunity.” The Maroons are honored to be able to make a difference in the community. “As a member of the basketball team and of the Order of the ‘C’, we partake in many different service opportunities including clothing drives,” said junior Collin Barthel. “I truly enjoy helping people around the community through UChicago.”

Maroons Basketball Alumni Class of 2002 (15th-year anniversary) “My time at UChicago really taught me to think and look at things in different way; this has helped me to solve problems at work and especially to seek to understand people and different points of view. I see this every day as I try to teach my children and help them to have that UChicago mentality where they ask questions and actively listen. My favorite part of being there was walking to new neighborhoods, checking out a pass from the library to see all of the museums for free, or just finding some outdoor event to crash. Basketball sure was a lot of fun and I loved the competition and opportunity to get better and stronger physically every day. I still tell stories about games and teammates on a weekly basis. Class of 2007 (10th-year anniversary) “Attending the University of Chicago was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I had my eyes opened up to a whole new way of thinking. The blend of being able to play varsity basketball, attend a world-class institution, develop new strategies for critical thought, and explore the city of Chicago make the UChicago experience incredibly unique. I had a wonderful basketball experience too. What I valued most was the opportunity to travel the country, play in one of the premier Division III athletic conferences, and to compete for a conference championship. Going to the NCAA tournament my senior year was a career highlight for me. What's more, we were able to do this while developing lifelong friendships with teammates. These are guys that are going through the same things you are - studying for tests, searching for internships, going to office hours - and yet you are all able to come together on the court and compete.” - Jesse Meyer (Class of 2007)

are ones that I’ll cherish forever. My favorite times as a player were playing on the road in hostile UAA environments with my best friends. Also, our trip to Italy before my senior year was a trip that I’ll never forget.” - Drew Adams (Class of 2007) “I would not have had the opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to have with respect to my career, if not for my University of Chicago education and the connections fostered through various university and athletic alumni. At this point, I can honestly say there is literally no price I can place on the value of the education I received in my four years at UChicago. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the basketball program and to be able to call so many teammates my friends to this day. Maybe more than during our playing days, I take great pride in sharing in the current successes Woodhead, Vismantas, Adams and Meyer at the Adams wedding

of my former teammates and I always know that in tough times, I can count on them to be there.” - Jason Vismantas (Class of 2007)

Class of 2011 (5th-year anniversary) “The education I received at The University of Chicago continues to have a lasting impact from both a personal and professional standpoint. In terms of campus life, that was unique because its proximity to downtown made it possible and practical to be able to experience the city and all it has to offer. As for playing basketball, that was an unforgettable experience. However, the most lasting impact from my four years will be the friendships forged during that time, which continue today.” - Michael Sustarsic (Class of 2012)

Maroons Basketball Alumni “The education offered at University of Chicago is unrivaled, and that is recognized everywhere I go. My undergraduate experience has more than prepared me for law school, professional life, and living a well-rounded life in general. Hyde Park is a special place - it is the perfect balance of a quintessential college campus and the resources of a world-class city. I loved the way the beauty of the gothic campus blends in with such a unique neighborhood. Playing basketball at UChicago was a life-changing decision for me and a true privilege. Beyond the amazing opportunities that being a Maroon offers - such as conference games across the country and a trip to South America - I became best friends with all of my teammates. Being a part of the basketball team has given me an incredible network of friends and connections for the rest of my life.”

Athletics at UChicago Overview The University of Chicago Department of Athletics and Recreation aims to enrich the life of the whole person. We are invested in competitive excellence as we challenge our studentathletes to develop into their best selves as athletes, teammates, students and ultimately, citizens of the world. As athletes they embody physical strength and learn the value of movement to incorporate healthy activity and habits into their lives. Through sport we are committed to teaching how to work collaboratively to reach performance goals, how to embrace diversity of thought and culture, how to persevere through failure with resiliency, how to compete with integrity. We strive to engage our community through fitness and recreation to encourage holistic and healthy living, to build confidence, and to confront challenges physically and mentally.

The UAA UChicago, which sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports, is a charter member of the University Athletic Association, an NCAA Division III conference formed in 1986 as a bold statement of what college athletics can and should be — that it is highly desirable and possible for a group of committed institutions to seek excellence in athletics while holding the student-athlete and the institution’s academic mission as the center of focus. The eight members of the UAA include Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, the University of Chicago, the University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis. With its membership in the UAA, UChicago offers its student-athletes the opportunity to compete against athletes and teams from among the top research institutions in the country, as well as travel opportunities comparable to those offered by members of major Division I conferences. UChicago has played a major role in helping the UAA attain its goal of achieving the proper balance between athletics and academics. In Reclaiming the Game: College Sports and Education Values, author William Bowen –– president of the Mellon Foundation –– posed the question, “How has the UAA managed to mount what is, by all signs, a successful intercollegiate program without paying the academic price that is so evident in other similar college athletics conferences?” Bowen continued, “The active involvement of the University of Chicago, with its emphasis on core academic values, has without question been a help in achieving and maintaining this policy.”

Success on the Playing Field In 2015-16, UChicago finished 14th in the nation among 323 NCAA Division III institutions in the final standings for the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which recognizes the top overall athletic programs in the country. UChicago teams notched national top-15 finishes in men’s tennis (top 4), women’s tennis (top 8), women’s swimming and diving (14th) and men’s swimming and diving (14th). That same year, the Maroons also featured 30 All-Americans, 39 national qualifiers, 25 all-region selections, 3 UAA MVPs and 122 All-UAA performers.

Athletes & Academic Excellence The intercollegiate program at the University of Chicago directly supports the College’s commitment to excellence, and helps to produce scholarathletes whose primary focus is on their academic achievements. The University of Chicago has a long history of outstanding student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom. During the University of Chicago’s early years as a member of the Big Ten Conference, the athletics program counted numerous distinguished scholarathletes among its ranks, including 1910 Rhodes Scholar Edwin Hubble, a basketball player who later became a distinguished scientist for whom the Hubble Space Telescope is named. UChicago has furthered that tradition in recent years as its student-athletes have continued to compile an extraordinary record of academic and athletic accomplishment, highlighted by four Rhodes Scholars since 1996, and 302 UAA All-Academic Recognition Award recipients in 2015-16.

Award-Winning Facility In the fall of 2003, Chicago Athletics entered a new era with the opening of the $51 million Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. Designed by famed architect Cesar Pelli, the 150,000-square-foot facility includes a 1,658-seat competition gymnasium which is home to the Chicago basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams. In addition to the competition gymnasium, the facility features the 50-meter Myers-McLoraine Pool, the Bernard J. DelGiorno Fitness Center, a dance room, classrooms, the Athletics Hall of Fame, locker rooms and offices. In short, the University of Chicago provides student-athletes with what might be the best balance in higher education: an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence recognized all over the world, a high-quality intercollegiate athletics program consistent with its academic mission, unique conference travel and competition, and outstanding athletics and recreational facilities.

University of Chicago Basketball 2016-17

The University of Chicago Ranked in 2016 as the nation’s thirdleading university by U.S. News & World Report, the University of Chicago is one of the world’s great intellectual communities and centers of learning. It has achieved particular distinction in faculty scholarship, the training of graduate students, and for its renowned undergraduate education that emphasizes critical thinking, intellectual depth, and cultural breadth. Founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller, the University opened its doors for classes on October 1, 1892, with an enrollment of 594 students. President William Rainey Harper presided over a faculty of 103, which included eight former college presidents. Today, the University features a total enrollment of approximately 14,467 students — including 5,369 undergraduates — and a 2,168-member faculty. The University is private, nondenominational, and coeducational, and it includes the undergraduate College, four graduate divisions, six graduate professional schools, the library, the Graham Center of General Studies, and the University of Chicago Press. The University also features several cultural resources, including the Oriental Institute Museum, Court Theatre, Renaissance Society, and the Smart Museum of Art. Extending along both sides of the Midway Plaisance, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and used for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, the University occupies a 190-acre campus. The English collegiate Gothic style set the general tone for the design and development of the campus. Around a series of tree-shaded quadrangles, imposing buildings of gray limestone with red-tile roofs, and deep-set rectangular windows show off elaborate ornamentation, gargoyles and chimeras, and decorated towers. These quadrangles are dominated by Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, with its 207-foot tower, and by the Joseph Regenstein Library, one of the largest academic libraries in the United States. Many campus structures have been designated national historic landmarks, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House and the site of the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear reaction marked by the Henry Moore sculpture Nuclear Energy. Chicago has had a major impact on American higher education — inventing the four-quarter system, developing extension courses and programs in the liberal arts for adults, establishing a coherent program of general education for undergraduates, and initiating a full-time medical school teaching faculty. Chicago also pioneered orientation week and gives the nation’s oldest teaching awards. Since the University’s founding, more than 80 recipients of the Nobel Prize have been students, researchers, or faculty. The University is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities. About 65 percent of the University’s faculty and their families and nearly all of its students live in the Hyde Park neighborhood. One of Chicago’s biggest tourist attractions, the Museum of Science and Industry, is located here, as well as the DuSable Museum of African-American History and the Weiss Museum of Judaica. Just 15 minutes north of Hyde Park is the Chicago Loop, where students and faculty regularly attend an array of theater, movies, art exhibits, museums, and restaurants. Some of Chicago’s main cultural attractions are the Art Institute, the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony, the Goodman Theatre, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Scores of other professional and community theater, dance, and visual arts organizations are active in the city. Architecturally, Chicago is the home of many major developments in 20th-century architecture and urban design. One of the nation’s greatest sports cities, Chicago is the home of two Major League Baseball teams – the White Sox and the Cubs – as well as the National Basketball Association Bulls, the National Football League Bears, the National Hockey League Blackhawks, the Major League Soccer Fire, and the Women’s National Basketball Association Sky.

UAA & NCAA Division III The UAA

NCAA Division III

In 1987, Chicago became a charter member of a new and unique NCAA Division III conference, the University Athletic Association. Comprised of some of the nation’s leading research institutions, UAA members include Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, the University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis. Since its founding, the UAA has continued to serve as a bold statement of the vision of its founders — that the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence are complementary goals and can be achieved without the compromise of one by the other. Implicit in this vision are three assumptions: • The academic enterprise is the primary element. Studentathletes are just that — students first and athletes second. • Athletic excellence is not to be confused with a win-at-allcosts attitude. It properly relates to the caliber of experience offered to students who participate in intercollegiate athletics. • Athletics should not only complement the academic experience, but should also reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. Division III is an approach to athletics — not a synonym for third-rate. Since joining the UAA, Chicago teams have captured 55 conference championships, made 80 NCAA tournament appearances, and posted 12 national top-four finishes. In addition, the Maroons have claimed 17 NCAA individual titles and three have been selected as the national player of the year.

The University of Chicago has competed at the NCAA Division III level since it was established in 1973. The largest of the three NCAA Divisions, Division III counted as members 450 institutions (19 percent public, 81 percent private) in 2015-16.

The UAA in Theory • Academic excellence and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive. • The academic enterprise is the primary element. • Athletic excellence properly relates to the caliber of experience offered to students. • Athletic programs should reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. • A consistent and challenging level of athletic competition should be provided for both women and men.

The UAA in Practice • In 2015-16, 37 student-athletes from UAA institutions were recognized as Capital One Academic All-Americans and nine were named NCAA Postgraduate or Fulbright Scholars. • 148 UAA student-athletes received All-American honors with 30 garnering individual/relay national championships or national Player of the Year accolades. • In 2015-16 NCAA championship competition, 22 UAA teams finished in the top 10 in their national championships, while another 17 finished in the top 20.

What is the NCAA Division III? • Division III features student-athletes who are subject to the same admission standards, academic standards, housing, and support services as the general student body. Division III studentathletes are not permitted to receive athletically-related financial aid. • Division III offers an intense and competitive athletics environment for student-athletes who play for the love of the game, without the obligation of an athletics scholarship. • Division III athletics departments place special importance on the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on the spectators. The student-athlete’s experience is of paramount concern. • Division III athletics provides a well-rounded collegiate experience that involves a balance of rigorous academics, competitive athletics, and the opportunity to pursue the multitude of other co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. • Division III places primary emphasis on regional in-season and conference competition, while also offering 36 national championships annually. • Division III playing season and eligibility standards minimize conflicts between athletics and academics, allowing studentathletes to focus on their academic programs and the achievement of a degree. • Division III athletics departments are dedicated to offering broad-based programs with a high number and wide range of athletics participation opportunities for both men and women. • Division III affords student-athletes the opportunity to discover valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership, which in turn make student-athletes better students and responsible citizens. • Division III encourages student-athletes to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them, both within and beyond athletics, so that they may develop their full potential as students, athletes, and citizens.
