About the Program The Criminology, Law and Society Ph.D. program is consistently ranked #3 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The program focuses on the causes, manifestations and consequences of crime; the impacts of crime on society; social regulation; the civil justice system; the social and cultural contexts of law; and the interactive effects of law and society. With high caliber faculty and an interdisciplinary perspective, the program aims to develop students’ theoretical and methodological sophistication to prepare them for faculty positions at major universities and colleges or for research, training, and administrative work in the justice system.

World-class faculty include former presidents of the American Society of Criminology; former presidents of the Law and Society Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the American Psychology-Law Society; and fellows of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. Home to the national Forensic Science Center of Excellence, which helps ensure judges, lawyers and investigators can effectively utilize the results of forensic analyses by developing new probabilistic methods and statistical tools. Home to the Center of Evidence-Based Corrections, which helps corrections officials make policy decisions based on scientific evidence. Host of the National Registry of Exonerations, which collects, analyzes and disseminates information about all known exonerations of innocent criminal defendants in the United States, in order to prevent future false convictions by learning from past errors.
