ANNUAL REPORT – INTRODUCTION Dear Bruins, Our athletic department began the 2018-19 school year with the grand opening of Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Aug. 17, 2018, as the women’s soccer team earned win No. 1 of the season for the Bruins. Since then, we collected 353 more wins in all competitions for a final head-to-head record of 354-125-2, compiling a 74% win percentage across all our sports. To put that number in context, the Dodgers set an L.A. franchise record for wins in 2017, when their 104 victories equated to a 64% win percentage. Along the way, we had more special moments than I can list on this page, but it’s only appropriate to start with national championships for the beach volleyball and softball programs. These two teams reached the peak of competitive greatness in 2019, and we could not be more proud of Stein, Jenny, Kelly, Kirk, Lisa, the student-athletes, and the supporting staffs for these accomplishments. While not every team could end their season with a victory, congratulations are also in order for the gymnastics, men’s water polo and women’s water polo teams for their Top 3 finishes. In addition, our women’s soccer and women’s tennis teams had runs to the Elite 8 in their respective postseason tournaments. Four programs secured Pac-12 titles in 2018-19, including our gymnastics, softball, baseball and men’s tennis teams. The baseball program had the distinction of earning the No. 1 overall seed heading into postseason play after having been ranked No. 1 in the country for 11 consecutive weeks. Our department also enjoyed watching the football program triumph over our rivals at the Rose Bowl, as the offense compiled more than 300 rushing yards and our team scored 13 unanswered fourth quarter points to cement the victory. This all added up to another special campaign in Westwood, marked by broad-based excellence. We were proud to learn that UCLA finished sixth overall in the Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup. That marks our department’s eighth top 10 finish in the last 10 years. More than any other metric, the Directors’ Cup reflects the collective accomplishments of the entire department, as 18 teams scored points and every single staff member contributed to this achievement. Our athletic success was paired again with another year of academic excellence. We had 136 student-athletes reach the ultimate goal in June, walking across the stage at our Student-Athlete Graduation Celebration before their coaches, families and friends. No other
night of the year better captures our purpose. Earlier in the school year, we announced a department-wide Graduation Success Rate of 90% for the first time in UCLA history. This mark is a testament to the resilience of our student-athletes, who compete in an increasingly competitive academic environment at UCLA and still get the job done. To ensure continued success for future generations of student-athletes, we also announced our new goal to fund and build the Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes. Looking at several individual accolades, Rachel Garcia of the softball team earned one of the highest recognitions in all of college sports when she was honored with the Honda Cup as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. She won the fifth Honda Cup in UCLA history, joining an illustrious list that includes Natasha Watley, Lisa Fernandez, Jackie Joyner Kersee and Ann Meyers Drysdale. We also had six UCLA student-athletes earn individual NCAA National Championships in 2018-19. Gymnast Kyla Ross won vault and floor exercise titles. Maria Polyakova of the swimming and diving team won the 3-meter dive individual title. Our men’s tennis doubles duo of Max Cressy and Keegan Smith and the women’s tennis doubles team of Ayan Broomfield and Gabby Andrews also won NCAA titles. Katelyn Ohashi of the gymnastics team assembled a floor routine that remains the most watched sports video of the year, as it recorded nearly 44 million views.

Frankie Amaya was the top selection in the MLS Draft, marking the sixth time in which a Bruin went first overall. Other draft selections included Hailie Mace (No. 2, NWSL), Kennedy Burke (WNBA), Jaylen Hands (NBA), Caleb Wilson (NFL) and a school-record 13 selections in the MLB Draft, highlighted by Michael Toglia being a first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies. As we reflect on the 2018-19 school year, we want to say a final goodbye and thank you to a pair of coaching legends, as Coach Val Kondos-Field and Coach Cyndi Gallagher have hung up their respective “whistles”. We will miss each of these coaches immensely, but we also have a feeling they won’t be too far. We’re looking forward to the 2019-20 athletic seasons, when we will see the debut of four new UCLA head coaches. Coach Ryan Jorden will be the first out of the gate at the helm of our men’s soccer program, followed by Coach Mick Cronin (men’s basketball), Coach Chris Waller (gymnastics) and our newest head coach, Coach Jordan Wolfrum of the swimming and diving team. Our athletic department is excited to take part in the University’s Centennial celebration in 2019-20. This is a fantastic milestone for UCLA, worthy of a yearlong celebration. We look forward to incorporating the University’s celebration within the athletic seasons for all 25 sports, and we can’t wait to have you join us at these games, meets and matches. This is an exciting time for our University, and your support means so much to us. Thank you for your continued contributions and dedication to our student-athletes and coaches, and I look forward to seeing you in 2019-20. Go Bruins!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
UCLA’s beach volleyball and softball programs captured NCAA titles in 2019.
Beach Volleyball Repeats as NCAA Champs
Softball Downs Oklahoma to Win NCAA Title
The UCLA beach volleyball team entered the 2019 NCAA Tournament having lost three consecutive matches to crosstown rival USC, the Bruins’ only setbacks of the season. UCLA avenged those losses in the NCAA Championship match on Sunday, May 5, repeating as NCAA champs with a 3-0 victory over No. 1-seed USC.
The UCLA softball team won in dramatic fashion against Oklahoma in Game 2 of the Women’s College World Series, as Kinsley Washington lined a run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Jacqui Prober from second base.
No. 2-seed UCLA defeated USC to win second straight NCAA title.
Kinsley Washington’s two-out single snapped a 4-4 tie at the WCWS
The thrilling victory helped UCLA capture its 13 national championship in softball (12 NCAA titles) before a capacity crowd in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Tuesday, June 4.
The Bruins concluded their 2019 campaign with a 35-3 overall record after defeating USC in the championship match at Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Senior Izzy Carey and freshman Lindsey Sparks registered a 21-16, 21-15, triumph over Cammie Dorn and Mollie Ebertin on court five, making the score 2-0 in UCLA’s favor.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Oklahoma belted a two-out solo home run to tie the contest at 4-4. The Bruins responded in the bottom half of the frame. Taylor Pack reached safely with a base-hit, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and was out on an ensuing fielder’s choice that allowed Colleen Sullivan to safely reach first base. The first pitch to Washington got away on a wild pitch, allowing Sullivan to take second base before UCLA inserted Prober as a pinch-runner. Washington stroked the next pitch to left field, allowing Prober to scamper home with the game-winning run.
Needing just one win in flight two, consisting of courts one, two, and three, the Bruins got off to a great start, winning all three first sets. The championship-clinching victory took place on court three, as senior Zana Muno and freshman Abby Van Winkle defeated USC’s Haley Hallgren and Alexandra Poletto (22-20, 21-13). The win for the Bruins’ pair snapped a three-game losing streak to the Trojans’ pair, as well.
“They were convicted and they bought into the process,” UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. “They had each other’s back. There were so many selfless teammates, as far as not everyone got to get what they wanted, but they were committed to doing whatever they could to help this team. They’re a really gutsy, relentless team, and I’m so proud that they enjoyed it.”
Seniors Megan and Nicole McNamara took the first set against Tina Graudina and Abril Bustamante, 21-18, and were tied 19-19 in the second set when the match was called.
The Bruins had opened the 2019 WCWS Finals with a 16-3 victory against Oklahoma, tying the WCWS record with 16 runs scored and four home runs. The Bruins had knocked off Minnesota (7-2), Pac-12 rivals Arizona (6-2) and Washington (3-0, 10 innings) to reach the best-of-three-game championship series versus the Sooners.
UCLA opened the dual against USC in style, winning in straight sets on courts four and five in the first of two flights. Juniors Madi Yeomans and Savvy Simo took down Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser (21-16, 21-19) on court four to put UCLA ahead, 1-0.
Senior Sarah Sponcil and junior Lily Justine also took the first set against USC’s Sammy Slater and Terese Cannon, 21-18, and led 19-10 when the dual was truncated.
UCLA led the WCWS field in 2019 in batting average (.310), earned run average (1.84), home runs (12), on base percentage (.392), runs scored (37) and slugging percentage (.574). UCLA led the entire NCAA Tournament in average (.317), runs (79), slugging percentage (.548) and home runs (18).
Both of the Bruins’ pairs on courts three and five, Muno and Van Winkle, and Carey and Sparks, were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. After the season concluded, UCLA landed a program-best four first-team All-America selections, as selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (Megan McNamara, Nicole McNamara, Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil). UCLA’s duo of Megan and Nicole McNamara became the first pair in program history to have secured AllAmerica honors in four consecutive seasons.
Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia was named the WCWS Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-WCWS Tournament Team by Washington, junior Bubba Nickles and redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan. Garcia, the 2019 Honda Cup Award winner and back-to-back USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, went 5-0 in the circle at the WCWS with a 1.75 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 36 innings. She also hit .333 (5-for-15) with two homers and eight RBI, belting a three-run walk-off homer against Washington and one other round-tripper in game one of the WCWS Finals. 3

Maxime Cressy/Keegan Smith, Gabby Andrews/Ayan Broomfield guided their respective programs to NCAA doubles championships.
M. POLYAKOVA – DIVING Senior Maria Polyakova captured the NCAA crown in 3-meter diving on Friday, March 22, becoming the program’s firstever individual diving national champion and UCLA’s first individual champion in any event since 1996. She won the title with a score of 396.00, less than three points behind her program recordscore of 398.75. The last Bruin to win an individual championship was Hall of Famer Annette Salmeen, who won the 200 butterfly crown in 1996. Polyakova concluded her career as a seven-time first-team All-America (1M, 3M diving).

This marked the first time in 31 years in which one school had swept both doubles titles at the NCAA Championships. Like their 1988 predecessors, men’s champions Patrick Galbraith and Brian Garrow and women’s champions Stella Sampras and Allyson Cooper, the 2019 champs came from UCLA.

Rachel Garcia Wins Fifth Honda Cup in School History
Cressy and Smith achieved perfection in their only season as doubles partners. They didn’t even drop a set, en route to a 21-0 record. Cressy and Smith played exclusively on Court 1 in dual matches, going 16-0 in those contests. They surrendered three or fewer games on 10 occasions. The tournament portion of the schedule proved more of the same, with Cressy and Smith storming through five top-50 opponents to secure the 14th NCAA doubles title in program history and third in four years.
Garcia was the back-to-back winner of the Honda Sport Award for Softball. She became the third UCLA softball player to be named the winner of the Honda Cup, joining Lisa Fernandez (1993) and Natasha Watley (2003) and also became the fifth Bruin in any sport to have won the Honda Cup (joining former basketball player Ann Meyers, 1978, and track & field athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 1985).
The deciding win for Cressy and Smith took place against Alabama’s tandem of Patrick Kaukovalta and Mazen Osama. UCLA’s doubles duo dispatched the team from Alabama by a 6-3, 6-4 score at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Sensational season by Garcia ends with softball team’s national championship. Rachel Garcia, a redshirt junior, was the winner of the 2019 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Award and the prestigious Honda Cup, as announced during a live television ceremony at USC’s Galen Center on Monday, June 24.
“We’ve been working so hard, day in and day out for this moment,” Cressy said. “I dreamt of that moment from the moment I stepped in as a Bruin and from the moment I committed as a Bruin. Doing it with Keegan is definitely something very, very special and I’m going to remember it for my entire life.”
The top three finalists for the 2019 award were selected by voting from nearly 1,000 NCAA member schools. The Honda Cup winner was chosen by the Board of Directors of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program. Garcia’s Honda Sport Award for Softball marked the 11th time a UCLA softball player won the honor, joining Fernandez (1991, 1992, 1993), Watley (2003), Lisa Longaker (1988, 1990), Debbie Doom (1984), Janice Parks (1989) and Jennifer Brundage (1995).
Just two courts down and over one hour later, seniors Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield capped their collegiate careers with another championship moment. Michigan’s pair of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor held match point in the final, but the resilient UCLA duo answered, seizing a 5-7, 7-6(6), 1-0(9) victory for the seventh NCAA doubles title in program history and the Bruins’ first since 2008.
The back-to-back USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Garcia was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Women’s College World Series, helping the Bruins win their 13th national title. She became the first student-athlete ever to be named the Pac-12’s Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season. She was also named Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Pitcher of the Year and a firstteam All-America selection by the NFCA and Softball America. Rachel Garcia
Third-seeded Andrews and Broomfield won three third-set, 10-point tiebreakers in the tournament and defeated No. 1 seed Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes of USC in the semifinal round. Andrews and Broomfield finished the season 26-8 and 12-4 versus nationally-ranked opponents, including five top-40 wins in Orlando. “Indescribable,” Andrews said after the win. “The happiest moment of my life, happiest day of my life. One hundred percent. We worked so hard for this, and I think we deserve it. We really pushed ourselves, and we didn’t give up. We strived for every point like how we did [in the semifinal].”

COMMUNITY SERVICE
BRUINS IN THE COMMUNITY UCLA’s student-athletes volunteered over 3,000 hours in community outreach events during the 2018-19 school year. UCLA Athletics hosted over 20 events on campus and attended several community-related outings throughout the Los Angeles area. These service opportunities have allowed UCLA’s student-athletes the chance to mentor youth, give back to their community and serve as ambassadors for UCLA Athletics. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities with assistance and support from the Bruin Athletic Council.
Examples of the past year’s events include: • Dribble for the Cure • Visits to Mattel Children’s Hospital • Mattel Children’s Hospital Halloween Party • Mattel Children’s Hospital Teen Adventure Program • Mattel Children’s Hospital Bruin Run/Walk • Team Prime Time • Prime Time Games: Championship Saturday • ‘I’m Going to College’ Program • Lab School Fit Day • Adopt a Classroom
• Bruin for a Day with Emerson Middle School • Cleveland Elementary School “Reads & Leaders” • Ross Initiative for Sports Equality (RISE) Fan Engagement • Clothing drive for the Veterans Hospital • Veterans Hospital visits • Baseball Fantasy Camp with Veterans Hospital • Bruin Belles at PLAY Day • Kids Play International • Harper for Kids Youth Development Program • RADD (Rockers Against Drunk Driving)

Over 100 student-athletes volunteered at the seventh annual event May 19, 2019, hosted on UCLA’s campus. UCLA student-athletes served as honorary coaches, captains and officials for the inclusive soccer and basketball games. Participants were awarded medals and received high-fives and autographs from the Bruins.
Baseball Camp with Veterans UCLA’s baseball program hosted a Fantasy Camp for residents of the West Los Angeles Veterans Home in conjunction with Jackie Robinson Day. Players offered hitting and fielding instruction to military veterans. Head baseball coach John Savage spoke to veterans in the stands at UCLA’s home field, Jackie Robinson Stadium, on April 10, 2019, five days prior to the date celebrated nationwide as Jackie Robinson Day (honoring UCLA’s legendary alumnus). The event at Jackie Robinson Stadium was free for all veterans and included a free barbeque dinner, along with a baseball t-shirt, that was supported by the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Dribble for the Cure UCLA hosted the 11th annual Dribble for the Cure at Drake Stadium and Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Hundreds of participants helped to raise more than $130,000. The men’s and women’s basketball teams led participants on a dribble tour as they dribbled basketballs and walked around a course through UCLA’s campus. Dribble for the Cure has grown every year with an 11-year event total of more than 8,000 participants contributing over $1.6 million to benefit the Pediatric Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Cancer Research Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.
Mattel Children’s Hospital Throughout the year, several Bruin student-athletes visited playrooms at Mattel Children’s Hospital to spend time with the patients and their families. They are often asked to make special visits to patients who are not able to leave their rooms. Student-athletes also volunteered their time with Mattel’s Teen Adventure Program and the annual Halloween “Trick or Treat” event for patients at the hospital.
Team Prime Time Student-athletes volunteered their time with Team Prime Time (TPT), an after-school program for at-risk children from low-income areas of Los Angeles that combines academics, athletics, leadership training and the arts in order to prepare them for the future and allow them to reach their full potential. During past seasons, the UCLA football team has taken time from its practice schedule to visit Team Prime Time at Webster Middle School in Los Angeles. Over
50 elementary and middle school students enrolled in Team Prime Time’s Sports Camp spent the afternoon participating in interactive activities with members of the football team. The Bruins taught students UCLA’s eight-clap cheer, handed out posters and signed autographs for the participants.
RISE Fan Engagement RISE (Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality) has partnered with UCLA, USC and the Los Angeles Dodgers to bring the message of unity, understanding and respect to fans at the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic. Building on an existing partnership with both institutions, the “It Takes All Colors” fan engagement experience at Dodger Stadium had the support of SAAC groups from UCLA and USC. The “It Takes All Colors” engagement is a digital photo experience that provides an opportunity for RISE partners and their fans to show a commitment to equality. The fan engagement platform embodies RISE’s mission of using the unifying power of sports to improve racial relations and to drive social progress. Fans sign a pledge to end discrimination or harassment of any kind and couple their commitment with a branded photo or GIF that can be immediately shared on social media platforms.
For the past 11 years, members of the UCLA football program have teammed with a local elementary school to celebrate the students’ commitment to academic excellence. UCLA’s football players visited Cleveland Elementary School, returning to an elementary school that was once attended by former UCLA standout Jackie Robinson. The Rose Bowl has recently adopted Cleveland Elementary School, establishing a readership program named “Readers and Leaders.” Dymond Lee, Rahyme Johnson, Ryan Parks and Josh Wariboko volunteered their time to read some of these newly donated books to children.
Prime Time Games: Championship Sunday For the past 10 years, student-athletes have participated in Team Prime Time's fully inclusive sports program, the Prime Time Games. This sports program helps economically disadvantaged and under-served middle school students from Team Prime Time’s after school program ("coaches") 8

COMMUNITY SERVICE Bruin for a Day
Adopt a Classroom Program
RADD – Rockers Against Drunk Driving
Members of the Bruin Athletic Council (BAC) and their teammates hosted over 50 students from Emerson Middle School to experience being a “Bruin for a Day.” Student-athletes coordinated a day of presentations, group discussions, interactive activities, a campus tour and lunch in the dining hall for students. The student-athletes taught them about the Pyramid of Success and gave the students tips on academic success, time management, hard work and leadership.
The Adopt a Classroom pen pal program paired Bruin teams with elementary and middle school classrooms across L.A. Unified School District. UCLA’s student-athletes exchanged letters with students throughout the year, and the classrooms were invited to attend a home event to meet their Bruin pen pals. The Adopt a Classroom program stresses the importance of both education and athletics and aims to motivate students to work toward their goals in school and in life.
UCLA’s student-athletes have become involved with RADD, which stands for Rockers Against Drunk Driving. An internationally-recognized non-profit organization, RADD seeks to empower celebrities and media partners to create positive attitudes about road safety. RADD was founded in 1986 and advocates the use of designated drivers, seatbelts and safe driving through control behind the wheel, making responsible behavior the norm. RADD looks to use messages that are non-judgmental, hip and positive.
‘I’m Going to College’
Harper for Kids Program
UCLA had over 47,000 students from the L.A. Unified School District participate in the annual “I’m Going to College” program. This unique program brings youngsters, aged from kindergarten through the 12th grade, to UCLA events and couples the excitement and tradition of athletic contests with a message about the importance of higher education. Upon arrival at the event, students are greeted by a UCLA alumnus, current students or student-athlete volunteers and are led to the IGTC fair area. Students are immediately immersed in Bruin traditions, as they learn the spirited “eight-clap” cheer and receive educational information about questions they may have regarding education and preparing for college.
The Harper for Kids Youth Development Program is based upon former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success,” striving to teach youngsters how to achieve their personal best in life. UCLA’s student-athletes are able to interact with youngsters and talk to them about how their athletic opportunities are vehicles to heighten personal development and how the benefits of athletic participation can greatly help one’s personal growth.

WOODEN ACADEMY The Wooden Academy is a leadership development program that educates and supports Bruin student-athletes. Named after legendary Coach John Wooden, this program teaches the principles of his Pyramid of Success. These skills help UCLA’s student-athletes in their pursuit to be successful leaders and teammates within the university and beyond. Student-athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Wooden Academy each year by attending seminars to learn practical leadership lessons from coaches, administrators and Bruin alumni. UCLA hosted its annual Wooden Academy Speaker Series on Jan. 15, 2018, with Kevin Plank, the founder, CEO and chairman of Under Armour. Plank, who grew up in Maryland, graduated from the University of Maryland in 1996 with his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He started the apparel company Under Armour in the late 1990s, after graduating from the University of Maryland. UCLA’s Wooden Academy event offered current student-athletes the chance to hear from Plank and ask questions. UCLA’s Athletic Department signed an apparel deal with Under Armour in 2016, a 15-year partnership that officially began on July 1, 2017. UCLA Announces Plans for Mo Ostin Academic Center State-of-the-art facility will be dedicated toward the academic success of UCLA’s student-athletes
The UCLA Athletic Department announced plans to build a new on-campus studentathlete academic facility, to be known as the Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes. UCLA announced this decision in Feb. 2019, embarking upon a capital campaign to fund this project. The new, state-of-the-art academic center will enhance the many academic and student development services that are provided to UCLA’s nearly 700 studentathletes. The new facility will centralize academic and student services to bettter prepare student-athletes to achieve academic success. The facility will be located in the heart of UCLA’s campus, just west of Ackerman Student Union and adjacent to the east side of the J.D. Morgan Center. UCLA’s new academic facility will be named for Morris “Mo” Ostin, a legendary music industry executive and philanthropist who has generously committed the lead gift of $15 million for this proposed project. A proud graduate of UCLA, Ostin earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and is currently Chairman Emeritus of Warner Bros. Records. His legacy in the music world is vast and includes the founding of Reprise Records with Frank Sinatra, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 2003, and receiving the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ Grammy Icon Award in 2007. “It is my hope this academic center for student-athletes will serve as a resource for the most elite student-athletes in the country, at the country’s number one public institution, to excel not only athletically but also academically,” Ostin said. “For decades UCLA has developed talented student-athletes, including Academic All-Americans like Mike Warren, John Sciarra, Bill Walton, Denise Curry, and Jamaal Wilkes, to not only perform at their best athletically, but thrive in a very competitive academic environment. Assisting future student-athletes to reach their academic best is extremely important to me, and I am thrilled to be a part of this new academic center.”
An artist’s rendering of the proposed Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
The new building will span three levels and include offices for UCLA Athletics’ Academic and Student Services staff, individual and group study spaces, tutorial areas, and state-of-the-art technology labs in nearly 20,000 square feet of space. The center’s proximity to the J.D. Morgan Center will centralize the Athletics Department’s academic services with UCLA’s coaching and administrative staff and allow the student-athletes to
be more efficient with their time in order to balance their academic and athletic responsibilities. Additional highlights of this new academic resource center will include dynamic learning environments from casual individual study spaces to regimented one-on-one and group tutorial sessions. The new facility will provide unified
academic and athletic space that helps to promote collaborative learning and more efficient communication, collaboration and problem-solving. The building will alllow for expanded office space for athletic department academic staff and will include an enhanced and relocated Hall of Fame entry area that faces the iconic Bruin Bear.
Tennis Programs Unveil Katz Family Scoreboard UCLA’s men’s and tennis programs gathered at the Los Angeles Tennis Center for the official ribbon cutting ceremony, as they unveiled the state-of-the-art Katz Family Scoreboard on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Situated high above the east end of the Los Angeles Tennis Center, the Katz Family Scoreboard became the latest contribution to UCLA’s tennis programs by the Katz Family, which has also established an endowed scholarship for men’s tennis and has made possible the renovation of LATC’s men’s and women’s team rooms in recent years.
Todd Katz competed as a student-athlete for the UCLA men’s tennis program in the early 1980s under legendary head coach Glenn Bassett. Katz served as team captain during his senior season (1982-83). UCLA won its 14th NCAA title in men’s tennis in 1982. The Katz Family Scoreboard features an 18-foot-high and 31-foot-wide Daktronics high definition display and is among the largest LED video screens in collegiate tennis. Stationed at the east end of the main stadium courts, the board has a 13HD pixel pitch capable of switching between content playback mode and video mode using
Show Control. RGB LED lights allow for a more vast graphics ability. Audio at UCLA’s tennis matches have been improved, thanks to a new custom JBL speaker system. The ceremony began with remarks by Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero, Women’s Tennis Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster, Men’s Tennis Head Coach Billy Martin, and Senior Associate Athletic Director Josh Rebholz, who thanked Ron Katz and Dana and Todd Katz for their generous contributions. Following the remarks, the Katz family was joined by Guerrero and both head coaches for the ceremonial ribbon cutting, followed by a reception for both the men’s and women’s teams and invited guests. The UCLA men’s tennis team was to first showcase the Katz Family Scoreboard in a dual meet vs. Nevada and UC Davis, but was postponed due to rain. They were finally able to showcase the new scoreboard on January 25 with a 4-1 win over Indiana. The women’s team showcased the new scoreboard on January 26 with a 4-0 victory against Minnesota. “It makes us so proud to have a scoreboard like this,” Sampras Webster said. “I want to thank the Katz Family. It really makes a difference. It completes this stadium and it will help in so many ways with our fans, with our recruits, with our student-athletes.” “This tennis stadium would not be here, in my opinion, if it wasn’t for Ron Katz,” stated Martin. “We’re getting a great scoreboard from the Katz Family but this wouldn’t be here. It was his idea, his brainstorming with Leonard Straus that really started the tennis stadium to be here on campus. I’ve always been so grateful for that, much less the other things [he’s] done for our school and for our tennis team.”

UCLA Athletics Makes Key Contributions to University’s Centennial Campaign Athletic department surpasses 2018-19 fundraising goal by 17 percent
UCLA’s athletic department received $41,221,002 in private donations during the 2019 fiscal year (July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019), surpassing its annual gual of $35 million by 17 percent. The year-long total came from nearly 9,000 individual gifts and helped to bring the department total to $317,862,228 raised in private support as part of the University’s $4.2 billion Centennial Campaign, surpassing a recently-increased goal of $300 million. The original goal had been $260 million. The UCLA Centennial Campaign began in 2013 and will conclude in Dec. 2019, moving past its initial goal of $4.2 billion. The UCLA athletic department’s goal of raising $300 million has been among the most aggressive fundraising efforts in the history of intercollegiate athletics. The campaign strives to provide student-athletes with unparalleled experiences, both academically and athletically. Three distinct ways in which this campaign directly benefits UCLA’s student-athletes are through operational support for additional resources (of nearly 650 student-athletes), support through endowments, and capital projects that lead to state-of-the-art facilities. UCLA’s fundraising success was highlighted in 201819 by one eight-figure contribution – Mo Ostin’s $15,000,000 leadership gift toward the planned planned Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes, and four seven-figure donations that included a $1 million gift from Ted and Danielle Ackerley for the planned Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes. It also included an anonymous $1 million gift toward the THEN NOW FOREVER fund in support of UCLA Football, a still-to-beannounced $1 million gift toward UCLA Baseball, and an anonymous $4 million gift in support of student-athlete scholarships through the Wooden Athletic Fund. Eighty-five individuals, members of UCLA’s exclusive 1919 Society, have made contributions of $1 million or more in their lifetime in support of UCLA Athletics. Sixty of those 85 individuals have eclipsed the milestone since the Centennial Campaign began in 2013. During the 2018-19 school year, UCLA established nine new student-athlete scholarship endowments with $1,188,403 received in private support through the Forever Champions initiative. Forever Champions allows
Students and alumni gathered in Royce Quad on May 18, 2019, to celebrate the University’s 100th anniversary.
donors to create an everlasting endowment, directed to the sport of choice, to support the educational and athletic experience of UCLA student-athletes for years to come. These generous donors enjoy exclusive, lifetime benefits through the Wooden Athletic Fund. UCLA has generated more than $18 million in new scholarship endowment funding over the last three years. Capital projects funding amounted to more than $18 million in the 2019 fiscal year. UCLA opened the new home for the men’s and women’s soccer programs, Wallis Annenberg Stadium, in August 2018, and the Bruins’ tennis programs debuted the new state-ofthe-art Katz Family Scoreboard in January 2019. UCLA also announced plans to build the three-level Mo Ostin Academic Center for Student-Athletes which will include study spaces, tutorial areas, state-of-the-art technology, and offices for UCLA Athletics’ Academic and Student Services staff.
Record giving from nearly 17,000 individuals over the past few years has translated into impactful, tangible results in these three areas: Capital Gifts • The addition of the Wasserman Football Center and the Mo Ostin Basketball Center, facilities supporting UCLA football and men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, respectively • Capital renovations and upgrades to Elvin “Ducky” Drake Stadium, Easton Stadium, Jackie Robinson Stadium, Acosta Athletic Center and Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion. • The renovation of Yates Gym, the home of UCLA gymnastics, including the addition of the Don Shepherd UCLA Gymnastics Suite. • The planned addition of Mapes Beach, a facility that will support the Bruins’ beach volleyball student-athletes. • The addition of Wallis Annenberg Stadium, a facility that serves as the primary competition venue for the UCLA men’s and women’s soccer teams. Endowments • The establishment of 105 new Four Deep Scholarship Endowments, providing support for student-athlete financial aid. • Expansion of athletic scholarships to include full cost of attendance. Operational/Student-Athlete Development Support • Expansion of academic and student support services provided to student-athletes to ensure their academic success. • Enhanced comprehensive mental health support system for student-athletes. • Expansion of the Student-Athlete Development Program, which focuses on personal growth, leadership, professional development and community service. • Further development of the performance nutrition program to promote optimal fueling and recovery and UCLA’s studentathletes.

UCLA ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Eight Former UCLA Standouts Inducted into UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame Amanda Freed
Members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2018 included Nikki Blue (women’s basketball), Lynn “Buck” Compton (baseball/football), Larry Farmer (men’s basketball), Amanda Freed (softball), Jenny Johnson Jordan (women’s volleyball), Eric Lindroth (men’s water polo) and Stella Sampras Webster (women’s tennis).
Softball, 1999-2002
Amanda Freed began her UCLA career with a no-hitter and finished it as the all-time winningest pitcher in UCLA history with 97 victories. A three-time All-American and fourtime All-Pac-10 honoree, Freed played in the Women’s College World Series four times, winning as a freshman in 1999, when she contributed two hits and struck out two in three innings of relief to pick up the save in the title game. Freed sits in the UCLA Top 10 in eight statistical categories, including wins (fourth with 97), strikeouts (sixth with 760), shutouts (sixth with 47) and no-hitters (ninth with five). As a hitter, she also ranks in the Top 10 in eight categories, including at-bats (second with 816), stolen bases (tied for third with 51) and runs scored (third with 182). Freed was an alternate for Team USA at the 2000 Olympics and helped the 2004 team win gold.
Nikki Blue
Women’s Basketball, 2002-06
One of the all-time great point guards in Pac-10 history, Nikki Blue was just the fifth player in conference history to be named to the All-Pac-10 team four straight years. She finished her career ranked fifth on the all-time UCLA list in scoring (1,797), second in assists (602), third in steals (325), fourth in made three-point shots (114), seventh in three-point shooting percentage (.355) and second in made free throws (455). Blue, a two-time honorable mention All-American and four-time Pac-10 All-Tournament selection, produced 89 double-figure scoring games in her career and also became the first Bruin ever to lead the Pac-10 in assists with 189 as a senior. In 2006, she helped lead UCLA to its first-ever Pac-10 Conference Tournament title. Blue was a second-round pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft and played in the league for four years before moving into coaching. She is currently an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University.
Jenny Johnson Jordan
Women’s Volleyball, 1991-95 (Beach Volleyball assistant coach, 2014-present)
Kevin Chappell capped an outstanding collegiate career by winning NCAA team and individual titles in 2008 and capturing both the Fred Haskins Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award for National Collegiate Player of the Year. Chappell was a three-time PING AllAmerican, a four-time All-Pac-10 honoree and the 2008 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year. Over his career, he won five tournaments, which tied for fourth-most in school history. He also tied the school record with the best 54-hole tournament score, a 198. Since becoming a professional in 2008, he has accumulated over $15 million in earnings, including a win at the 2017 Valero Texas Open and a third-place finish at the 2011 U.S. Open.
Jenny Johnson Jordan was a member of UCLA’s 1991 NCAA Women’s Volleyball championship team as a player in 1991 and an assistant coach for UCLA’s 2018 NCAA Beach Volleyball championship team. She finished her playing career at UCLA as one of just 12 Bruins to post at least 1,000 kills and digs, ranking No. 22 all-time at UCLA with 1,212 kills and No. 9 with 1,214 digs. Selected in 1997 as one of the 25 greatest volleyball players in UCLA history, Johnson Jordan earned two All-America honors in 1994 and 1995 and was a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 honoree in 1993 and 1995. She played on UCLA’s championship team as a freshman and on two runner-up teams in 1992 and 1994. Following her playing days at UCLA, she formed one of the most successful beach volleyball tandems in the world with former Bruin teammate Annett (Buckner) Davis, finishing fifth in the 2000 Olympic Games and serving as alternates for the 2004 Olympics. Johnson Jordan won 10 professional beach titles worldwide and was honored in 2002 with the AVP Special Achievement Award. In her fifth year as assistant coach for the UCLA Beach Volleyball team, she helped lead the Bruins to their first-ever Pac-12 and NCAA title in 2018. Johnson Jordan and her father Rafer Johnson will become the first father-daughter duo ever to be inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lynn “Buck” Compton
Eric Lindroth
A decorated war hero and later a California State judge, the late Lynn “Buck” Compton was a two-sport star at UCLA, earning all-conference honors as a catcher on the baseball team and playing as a two-way guard on both offense and defense for the football team. Compton’s career batting average at UCLA was around .340, and he was a charter member of the UCLA Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1942, he led the UCLA football team to its first-ever win over USC and its first-ever conference championship. The 1942 Bruins were also the first UCLA team ever to go to the Rose Bowl. Compton joined the Army in 1942 during World War II and earned several military distinctions, including a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He helped the U.S. win Pan American Games gold in 1979 and silver in 1975. He was also a member of the 1983 FINA Cup championship team. Lindroth was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1988 after playing in over 100 international matches.
