Sounds Imagined Dr Jon Aveyard The main piece in this exhibition is a collection of postcards describing sounds heard by the artist whilst on a six-month journey around England and Scotland in a converted ambulance with his then-fiancée, now-wife. Along the way, he took notes of the sounds he heard – wind and waves, blackbirds and skylarks, buskers on the street and Bonnie Tyler on the radio. This piece presents a selection of these notes in the form of a series of poetic, prosaic and picture-based postcards written four years later in 2018. Through these filters, delays and transformations, the sounds heard become sounds imagined. Other works will also be on display.

Hidden Gems School of Art, Design and Fashion in collaboration with Gawthorpe Textiles

Tuesday 2 October until Tuesday 9 October (weekdays only) 9.00am

An exhibition of scarves and portraits inspired by pieces from the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection. The exhibition is part of an Arts Council funded project collaboration between UCLan and Gawthorpe Textiles Collection involving researchers, local artists, stylists, photographers, schoolchildren and community members.

8 hours

The aim was to uncover hidden gems from the rare samples in the textile collection at Gawthorpe and to find hidden gems from the local Asian community members who had undiscovered artistic talents.

PR1 Gallery, Victoria Building, UCLan, Adelphi Street, Preston PR1 7HD

The title Hidden Gems also makes an oblique reference to the ongoing debate about modesty, religious belief, fashion and women’s rights. Modest fashion has evolved to become an important cultural and economic force over recent decades, even high street labels feature models wearing headscarves meaning that modest clothing is now an international symbol for inclusion and empowerment for women across cultural, ethnic and religious boundaries.

Free No booking required 12+

The project, led by Amanda Odlin-Bates and Bev Lamey, includes four artists, all UCLan graduates, Zareen Wahid, Lisa Scarlett Ryan, Femida Adam and Louise Duxbury who worked with ladies from the local community in Burnley and schoolchildren from Sir John Thursby Community College to produce contemporary textiles for headscarf designs.

Whittingham 1918 by Eric Northey BA (Hons) Acting Alumni and Year 3 Theatre Production This new play written by Eric Northey will be premiered at St Peter’s Arts Centre - directed by Terence Mann, Head of BA (Hons) Acting at UCLan and performed by professional actors, musicians and final year students all from UCLan’s BA (Hons) Acting course. The play depicts the drama of Whittingham Asylum, near Preston, as the First World War comes to its own dramatic end. With more than 900,000 British military killed, two million wounded, 200,000 missing, all UK hospitals and institutions are admitting war-related casualties. Delivered in secret by closed ambulance trains, Whittingham Asylum has to take in 1,000 shell-shocked ‘service patients’, to add to the already desperate numbers of nearly 3,000 civilian mental cases.

Thursday 25 October until Saturday 27 October 7.30pm 2 hours £8 / Concessions, £5 No booking required 12+ St Peter’s Arts Centre, UCLan, St Peter’s Street, Preston PR1 7BS @UCLanActing

This powerful drama is based on research into the Whittingham Asylum papers held at Lancashire Archives. It questions who is ‘mad’ - the warmongers or the peacemakers? It presents a tale of hope not hatred, in a shattered world and it is women who pick up the pieces, and rebuild. After its run at St Peter’s, the show will tour the North West, kindly funded by the health service union, Unison. Whittingham 1918 is part of Whittingham Lives, a two-year Arts and Heritage project, funded by Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery, Unison and partnered by Lancashire Care NHS Trust, the Harris Museum and UCLan.

The Great Northern Creative Expo - Risa Jaroslow Talk

Monday 12 November

BA (Hons) Dance Performance and Teaching

1 hour

4.30pm

Free

International choreographer Risa Jaroslow has created a performance to celebrate UCLan’s 190th anniversary. The creation process and the performance of this work included students from the BA (Hons) Dance Performance and Teaching course, as well as UCLan staff and local community members. Risa will share her practice and process for bringing trained and non-trained dancers together to create and perform. Risa has said: “My dance-making process begins with questions. In the studio, the dancers explore the questions through movement, take the answers and stretch them, turn them into daring partnering, whirl them through space and arrange them in patterns across many bodies. I include both the incredible virtuosity of highly trained dancers and the unique and deeply human contributions of non-trained movers in my work. By combining them, I aim to create a rich, complex picture that is resonant with all kinds of audiences.”

She works on heavy paper making bold, vibrant marks, often incorporating elements of monoprint or collage. Laine’s chosen shapes are inspired by movement and the joy of life; they give the appearance of dancing, shaking, hitting on each other, accordingly the completed works are given movement based titles: Roundabout, Tumble, and Wiggle Woogie.

ILLUME – Skelmersdale Glassball

Wednesday 28 November until Monday 3 December (weekdays only) 9.00am

ILLUME is a three year co-creative public arts project based in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, funded by Arts Council England and Lancashire County Council co-ordinated by Glassball. The project and the artists involved are using open working processes, when making a response to the 5,000 glass slides donated to the project by the Lancashire Archives based in Preston, in order to discuss and articulate views of the former new town of Skelmersdale. It asks how can an artwork become physically and conceptually embedded within the place through the ‘present past’. Working with students from West Lancashire College and artists John van Aitken (UCLan) and Jane Brake (Manchester School of Art), this collaboration has produced a series of photographs looking at several locations within Skelmersdale, collected from photo walks to the original public art works found in the town. The location of these works will physically change soon due to redevelopment, some locations have been forgotten, and others are perhaps becoming more political. This exhibition looks at these places as unanswered questions. The project aims to converse with these spaces etched with the passing of time but filled still by hope.

Worldwise International Book Club - Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi

Wednesday 12 December

Worldwise Learning Centre

Free

2.00pm 1 hour

No booking required

Join us once a month for our book club, where we review a variety of wonderful international books (English copies are available). This month’s book will be ‘Frankenstein in Baghdad’ by Ahmed Saadawi: A prize-winning horror novel from war-torn Iraq. From the rubble-strewn streets of US-occupied Baghdad, the scavenger Hadi collects human body parts and stitches them together to create a corpse. His goal, he claims, is for the government to recognise the parts as people and give them a proper burial. But when the corpse goes missing, a wave of eerie murders sweeps the city, and reports stream in of a horrendous-looking criminal who, though shot, cannot be killed. Hadi soon realises he has created a monster, one that needs human flesh to survive - first from the guilty, and then from anyone who crosses its path. An extraordinary achievement, ‘Frankenstein in Baghdad’ captures with white-knuckle horror and black humour the surreal reality of a city at war.

Love of the Nightingale Year 3 BA (Hons) Acting “I always felt a shadow hanging over me. I asked too many questions”. Tereus King of Thrace deceives and seduces Philomele, his sister in law, then silences her by tearing out her tongue. The horrific act leads the characters down a dark and dangerous path of revenge and violence in Wertenbaker’s electrifying play. Based loosely on the Sophocles tragedy of Tereus and the story of Philomele in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Wertenbaker combines elements from Greek myth and the history and drama of classical Greece to make a play that is as original as it is modern. Dealing with issues around the silencing of a woman’s voice, power and corruption, more than ever the play feels as relevant and as pertinent to a contemporary audience as it did when the RSC first premiered the play in 1988.

Ēkhe Alex de Vol and Josh Horsley This durational, mixed-media installation examines the intersections of design and sound. The Greek ‘Ekhe’ describes a sound, which to be heard, needs a resonating space. Vessels placed throughout the space are struck with falling objects. The resulting percussive sounds create evolving layers of tones that shift from note to noise as the vessels become full. Ekhe represents the continued collaboration and research of artists and UCLan music lecturers Alex de Vol and Josh Horsley.
