Newspapers and Journals Scan newspapers and journals regularly. All should be in the University Library. Many employers advertise their vacancies through the national and specialist press but some will use only regional or, in the case of Health and Local (Government) Authorities, mainly local papers. These jobs will be for people currently or shortly available for employment, but the advertisements also provide useful information about what is available and what qualifications/experience particular kinds of employer require. Daily Newspapers Each newspaper schedules job advertisements differently. The advertising schedules of selected national and regional newspapers are:

The list seems endless. In fact, most professional bodies produce regular publications which carry vacancies and, as a graduate, you can sometimes apply for student membership of a professional Institution or Association which will entitle you to receive the bulletins. And many of the organisations’ websites have sections carrying job vacancies.

Opportunities that either target people with disabilities or are vacancies within disability-related work can be found in Disability Now, the Ready, Willing and Able bulletin and New Beacon.

Employment Agencies Private employment agencies tend to specialise in particular types of job and operate in specific geographical areas. Most charge the employer, not the applicant, but it is advisable to enquire about registration fees. Many are members of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Recruitment & Employment Confederation, 36 Mortimer Street, London, W1N 7RB - web address http://www.rec.uk.com). For advice relating to jobseekers with a disability and recruitment agencies, there is a very detailed and helpful information sheet (No. 28 in the series) on the Skill website (www.skill.org.uk).
