Modeling Station Placement for the Bay Area Bike Share System PROJECT OVERVIEW Bay Area Bike Share is a regional bicycle sharing system located in five cities: San Francisco, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Mountain View, and San Jose. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is interested in understanding what factors are most influential in determining individual station usage within San Francisco. Improved efforts in station planning will help users access a station where and when they want to. If access to the system is improved, other non-users may be attracted to the system and ridership can potentially increase.

Trips Taken: From August to November 2013, over 80,000 trips have been made using Bay Area Bike Share and 70,000 of those trips originated in San Francisco. Average daily trips per month are within the range of 500 and 900. When spread across the 34 bike share stations in San Francisco, each station serves between 18 and 25 daily trips. When spread across the number of bicycles in service, which varies day to day, each bicycle serves between 1 and 2 daily trips. Trip Duration: From August to December 2013, the average length of bike share trips by time has decreased, perhaps as people adjusted to the system’s pricing strategy and became more aware of their personal travel time. Time of Day Traveled: People are using bikeshare at all hours of the day, but more people tend to use it during the morning and evening commute periods on weekdays. On weekends, ridership peaks at noon.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
• How can planners locate bikeshare stations in San Francisco to maximize ridership? • What demographic, built environment, and bike sharing network characteristics are most influential in affecting individual station usage?
RESEARCH DESIGN Review of Strategies for Bicycle Sharing Suitability and Station Siting Review of Bicycle Sharing Demand Indicators (population, non-white population, median income, bikeways, colleges, parks, bus stops, etc.)
TAKEAWAYS • Future research may be improved by incorporating user survey results, network effects, and/or using different sets of independent variables. • Models may be constrained by data availability. • Moving stations may ultimately not be feasible due to streetscape and roadway constraints. • Cities have adapted bike share systems to the match their local context. San Francisco has unique characteristics that sets it apart from other cities, even the four other cities within the regional Bay Area Bike Share system.
