UCLG CULTURE SUMMIT: CULTURE AND SUSTAINABLE CITIES
BILBAO 18-20 March 2015
Culture has always been at the heart of the world organization of United Cities and Local Governments - UCLG. In May 2004, the Agenda 21 for culture was adopted and in November 2010 the Policy Statement “Culture: Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development” was approved; culture is also at the core of UCLG´s advocacy efforts related to the Post-2015 Agenda. UCLG prepares a new document on culture and sustainable development: “Culture 21: Actions”. It will (a) build on the success of Agenda 21 for culture, (b) update its recommendations, with a clear orientation to the implementation of policies, and (c) be used in 20152019 to promote intelligence, networking, good practices, exchanges, peer-review and more expertise.
“Culture 21: Actions” will be approved at the UCLG Culture Summit, hosted by the City of Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain on 18-20 March 2015. The city of Bilbao has an extensive background in the implementation of cultural policies and programmes in sustainable development. The implementation of a sound cultural policy over the past two decades has consolidated Bilbao’s position as an international reference, with important cultural infrastructures and projects that protect heritage, promote diversity, increase the freedoms of all citizens and contribute to the economy, social cohesion and urban design. The UCLG Culture Summit is a learning event: the good practices of Agenda 21 for culture will be presented, the best projects of the first edition of the “International Award UCLG - Mexico City – Culture 21” will be disseminated and the results of the Pilot Cities programme will show cased. The Summit is a networking event that connects you with the organizations and the networks which are advocating in the #UrbanSDG and #culture2015goal global campaigns. The Summit will mark the beginning of a programme to support the implementation of “Culture 21 Actions”, in partnerships among cities, local and regional governments that recognize the important place of culture in sustainable development.
