This is Central Missouri The University of Central Missouri has provided quality postsecondary education to the state and nation for nearly 140 years. UCM was founded in 1871 as a regional normal school for teacher preparation and has grown into a comprehensive university that offers more than 150 areas of study. More important than numbers, however, is the high quality of its regionally, nationally and internationally known programs. UCM is Missouri’s lead institution in professional applied sciences and technology. Just take a look at why Central Missouri is right for you.
The Right Size
Central Missouri is a state leader in discipline specific accreditations. The university’s quality programs, small class sizes, opportunities for hands-on experience right from the beginning, and personalized attention from a dedicated faculty are all UCM hallmarks. In addition, nearly 11,000 students from all over the state, nation and world help to make the university’s learning environment positive and friendly.
The Right Place
The University of Central Missouri is located in Warrensburg, a friendly community of 18,000 people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 13. Warrensburg is only 35 miles from suburban Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment options and professional sports franchises. Other recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast.
The Right Price
Central Missouri’s Office of Student Financial Services disburses nearly $90 million annually in federal, state, institutional, and private assistance. More than 75 percent of the students who enroll at UCM receive some form of financial assistance, making an already reasonably priced Central Missouri education even more affordable.
The Right Time
Because of Central Missouri’s outstanding reputation, hundreds of leading businesses, industries, schools and government agencies actively recruit its graduates each year. UCM currently has a 92 percent job placement rate of graduates within six months of graduation. Central Missouri is dedicated to training Missouri’s workforce and emphasizes programs that are critical to Missouri’s future. The university also works with business and industry to retrain and continually educate people who are already in the job market.
The Right “Stuff”
Central Missouri’s 1,500-acre campus includes the 300-acre Pertle Springs biological research area and recreational park with the 18-hole Keth Memorial Golf Course; Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport; Missouri Safety Center; 100,000-watt public broadcasting stations KMOS-TV and KTBG-FM; Prussing Research Farm; South Recreation Complex; and the main campus with its instructional buildings, 19 residence halls, Audrey J. Walton Stadium at Vernon Kennedy Field, Elliott Union, James R. Crane Stadium at Robert N. Tompkins Field, and UCM Multipurpose Building. As a well-known cultural center, UCM provides abundant opportunities to attend events and exhibitions of the fine and performing arts.
The Right Programs
Central Missouri is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. All of its teacher education programs are dually accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. All undergraduate and graduate business administration degree programs in Central Missouri’s Adrian and Margaret Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies have earned the prestigious accreditation of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business-International. In addition, programs that include art, athletic training, aviation, chemistry, drafting technology, education, industrial hygiene, manufacturing and construction, music, nursing, occupational safety, social work, and speech pathology and audiology are all nationally accredited.

This includes the establishment of the Whiteman Advantage Program, which brings together personnel from Whiteman Air Force Base and the university to work cooperatively in creating new educational opportunities for military members. The university also developed the Military Tuition Package, which provides savings on an education for military men and women currently serving their country, as well as their spouses and dependents, and veterans.

It could be said Kathy Anderson’s athletic life has come full circle. She was an All-America student-athlete at the University of Central Missouri, she’s had her number 32 retired in Jennies basketball, and is a member of the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame. Now Anderson helps UCM student-athletes achieve their own goals, as she begins her seventh year at her alma mater. She was elevated to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator in 2011 after serving the past six years as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator. Anderson had served previously as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services at Northwest Missouri State University. Prior to assuming her role at Northwest, Anderson served a brief stint as admission and eligibility coordinator at the University of Washington. She added those duties in the summer of 2002 to her responsibilities as operations coordinator for men’s basketball for the Huskies. In addition, Anderson was assistant basketball coach in 2000 for the Seattle Storm and in 1998 for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. Her coaching career began in 1980, when she was hired as assistant women’s basketball coach at California State-Fullerton. While wearing the Cardinal & Black, she lettered four years in basketball, three years in softball, and once in track & field. In 1979-80 she was named second-team Academic All-American, and in 1980 she was honored as UCM Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete and Outstanding Senior in Physical Education. She also was named to the Jennies Basketball All-Decade Team for 1970-80 and the Jennies Basketball Silver Anniversary Team for 1970-95. UCM Athletic Success 183 MIAA Titles, 7 National Titles The University of Central Missouri has a long and rich history of excellence in athletics, both on the field of play and in the classroom. Outstanding teams, combined with some of the finest facilities in Division II athletics give UCM’s students, faculty and staff one more aspect of college life to enjoy with pride. Always a contender for conference titles, Central Missouri belongs to the 12-member Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which is recognized nationwide as one of the strongest conferences in all of NCAA Division II. Since 1983, the tenure of Athletic Director Jerry Hughes, UCM has won or shared 129 MIAA championships, more than any other league school. All-time, the Mules have taken home 129 titles, while the Jennies are at 54. Central Missouri has won five national championships since 1980 (men’s and women’s basketball in 1984--the first school in NCAA history to win both titles in the same season--baseball in 1994 and 2003, and women’s bowling in 2003), and seven overall. The Jennies volleyball team has been to the
NCAA Tournament every season for the past 28 years, and the Mules have won 15 MIAA Indoor Track & Field titles in the last 17 years, and 10 of the last 11 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field crowns. The Mules baseball squad has also made 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including 13 Division II World Series berths in that span. 10 UCM teams finished in the top 10 in the nation via ranking or place in 2010-11: Mules golf and volleyball finished third, men’s indoor track and field was fourth. Football finished ranked fifth, women’s indoor and outdoor finished sixth and Jennies bowling was seventh. Baseball ended the season ranked seventh, men’s outdoor track came in eighth and Jennies soccer was ninth. Individually, UCM had 46 different All-American seasons and performances. They also took home three individual national championships in track and field. Lindsay Lettow captured the pentathlon (indoor) and heptathlon (outdoor) titles, while Brent Vogel won the decathlon (outdoor). Eric Czerniewski won the Harlon Hill Award as the NCAA-II Football Player of the Year and Shawn Boss earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award for the top GPA at the Indoor Track Championships. Many schools brag of an overall grade point average between 2.5 and 2.9 for their 300 or so student-athletes. For the past 11 years, though, UCM’s more than 500 student-athletes have enjoyed an overall GPA of at least 3.00.

Welcome to Warrensburg, Missouri Warrensburg, Missouri is a friendly community of 18,000 people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 13. It is located just 40 miles southeast of suburban Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment options and professional sports franchises. The county seat of Johnson County, Warrensburg is just four hours from St. Louis and three hours from Branson, Mo., with easy access by highway, Amtrak, or Greyhound bus. Other recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast. Warrensburg is a city that emerged from a frontier gathering place more than 150 years ago. In 1833, a blacksmith from Kentucky named Martin Warren chose a well-travelled spot along an Osage Indian Trail to build a cabin and set up his blacksmith shop. His shop served as an informal gathering place for local farmers. Three years after moving to Missouri, Mr. Warren’s shop was named the county seat of the newly created County of Johnson. The township was named Warren’s Burg in honor of the local blacksmith, and in 1855, the township was incorporated and became the City of Warrensburg. It is that same strong midwestern work ethic displayed by its founder, and the same friendly atmosphere shown by his neighbors that may be seen in Warrensburg today. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Warrensburg was considered the Missouri Mule Capital because of the Horse and Mule Barn operated by the Jones Brothers on Railroad Street. Mules from the area won prizes at the State Fair (located just 30 minutes east in Sedalia, Mo.) and at even larger expositions like the one in St. Louis in 1904. The mule barn carried the motto, “Through these portals pass the finest mules on earth.”
by George Graham Vest on September 23, 1870: “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” Today the city’s Park Department has eight park areas with a total of 326 acres, and a Community Center which offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Two public golf courses are available in town -- one at the Hidden Pines Country Club, and another at Pertle Springs, operated Photo courtesy of United States Air Force by the University of Central Missouri. Other attractions in the area include Powell Gardens, a 1,250+ botanical garden just 12 miles west of Warrensburg on Missouri Highway 50 that contains hiking trails, picnic areas, and seasonal displays; Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo., home of the B-2 Bomber; Knob Noster State Park; and the Missouri State Fair, held each August in Sedalia, Mo. Of course, visitors to Warrensburg can also take in the exciting athletic events and various cultural experiences provided at the University of Central Missouri.
Warrensburg is home to many historic sites, including “Blind” Boone Park, the historic Johnson County Courthouse, the Missouri Pacific Train Depot, and many historical churches. It is also the site of the Old Drum Memorial Statue, in honor of Old Drum, the hound shot and killed by his owner’s neighbor in 1869. Old Drum was eulogized

Women’s Bowling – NCAA’s 88th Championship Women’s Bowling is one of the most recent addition of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 23 sponsored sports and became the organization’s 88th National Championship. Although this winter-season sport is relatively young by NCAA standards, its growth and bright future is reshaping the way bowling is viewed within and outside the world of college athletics . . .
From the Beginning . . . In September 1994, the National Collegiate Athletics Association recognized Bowling as an “emerging sport” for Women’s Athletics. The classification was made to assist the NCAA member institutions in providing greater participation opportunities for female student-athletes. As an emerging sport, Women’s Bowling needed to reach a minimum of 40 or more sponsoring institutions to become a NCAA Championship sport. Until Championship status was reached, the NCAA recognized the United States Bowling Congress – Collegiate Division as the governing body for the sport, and the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships as the National Championship of all women’s collegiate bowling programs. Between the years of 1994-2003, seven NCAA -sponsored programs earned spots as competing teams at the IBC, with two schools (including Central Missouri) winning National Championship titles. In late 2002, the NCAA announced that its membership schools sponsoring the sport had exceeded the 40 school minimum to apply for Championships status. In January 2003, the NCAA passed history-making legislation to elevate Women’s Bowling to Championship status. The inaugural NCAA Women’s Bowling National Championship was held in Houston, Texas on April 12-14, 2004. The first-ever finals were contested between Central Missouri State University and the University of Nebraska, with Nebraska winning the first NCAA title. CENTRAL REGION SCHOOLS Schools from the state of South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee NORTHEAST REGION SCHOOLS Schools from the state of Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Virginia, Massachusetts, W. Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Delaware
. . . to the current Championships today. Since 2004, the NCAA has hosted its all-division National Women’s Championships during the second full week of April. The 8-team event is the culmination of a full season of conference, regional and national competitions. The Championship, similar to the regular season, incorporates two formats of NCAA play – 5-person Team Matches and Baker Match Play. Qualifying rounds of 5-person Team Pinfall Matches establish competition seeding, followed by Baker Match Play (4 of 7) for the Championship double - elimination bracket. The final two teams compete in the National Championship Finals, televised live on ESPNU and by tape delay on ESPN. Selection to compete in the NCAA National Women’s Bowling Championships is done on an at-large basis by the NCAA Women’s Bowling Committee. As with all other NCAA sports, specific criteria (ex. win/loss records, strength of schedule, quality of wins, etc.) are used for the selection process. Only matches and competitions played against other NCAA sponsored programs may be used for the National Championship selection process. All teams, no matter what its normal Division classification, compete together in this Division I event.
Playing the NCAA way . . . As with all of it’s other sports, the NCAA utilizes its own playing rules and administration guidelines. Although the USBC is recognized as a national governing body and resource, NCAA bylaws do not allow its competitions or the approximately 70 member schools to supersede NCAA rules that are based on outside organizations. Examples of differences between the two groups can be seen in student-athlete initial eligibility, continuing eligibility, recruiting, transfer rules, regular season structure (such as dates of play, formats of competitions, etc.), and other competition playing rules.
Recognition as a varsity sport . . . As a member of the NCAA-sport family, coaches and studentathletes are provided with outstanding resources and experiences previously not always accessible for the sport of bowling. From allaround athletic skill development to student-athlete services and public relations support, women’s bowling is now breaking out of previous stereotypical molds. NCAA Bowling provides amazing opportunities for student-athletes to function at the highest levels of the academic and athletic spectrum . . . opportunities which are primary goals for student-athletes in any sport.

Becoming a Student—Athlete at UCM
13 ~ 2011-12 UCM Jennies Bowling ~ 13
Bowling at Central Missouri 2011-12 marks the 10-year anniversary of a special landmark for women’s bowling . . . the program’s elevation to varsity status. Throughout this period, Central Missouri has annually been recognized as one of the nation’s best among all National Collegiate Athletics Association schools. Due to post-season requirements, Central is limited in playing against women’s collegiate squads outside the NCAA system. However, UCM maintains membership with the sport’s governing body and uses select events against USBC teams to provide elite-caliber competition and experience during the year. Student-athletes come from all over the United States to compete on the squads, bringing with them a wealth of talent and knowledge to share on and off the lanes. The ladies learn immediately that academics must be the first priority and life as a UCM student-athlete must be build around balance and giving of yourself for your teammates, school and community. The women serve as tremendous ambassadors for UCM and learn a great deal about themselves and the United States during their travels.

Central Missouri student-athletes compete at an NCAA Division I level in this National Collegiate championship sport. Although the program is relatively young compared to others on campus, several teams and individuals have already left lasting impressions. Amber Gazverde became the first bowling athlete to be become National Player of the Year and inductee in the UCM Athletics Hall of Fame. Bryanna Caldwell and Tina Peak have earned spots on the U.S. National Teams while at UCM. Bryanna Caldwell became the first female alumni of the varsity era to earn national event title in 2010.
Before varsity level play . . . The women’s bowling program began on Central’s campus in 1971 and functioned as a club-sport until 2001. Throughout it’s years as a member of the United States Bowling Congress collegiate program, UCM competed against over 100 other junior college, AIAW, NAIA, NCAA and club-sport teams in an effort to win the women’s Intercollegiate Bowling Championships and Individual national titles of their era. Central Missouri earned numerous tournament and conference titles in addition to qualifying for the national championships twelve times in the final twenty years of club-level play. Included as part of these years were a 2nd place finish at the 1998 Intercollegiate Championships, 4th place at the 1999 Championships and 5th place honors at both the 1990 and 2000 Championships. Two Central Missouri women also won collegiate Individual titles.

Multiple teams and elite-level players helped lay the foundation for the standard of success maintained today, including women such as Terry Eddy, Michelle Day, Cheryl Gibson, Jana Ohlendorf and Lisa Stack. These are just a few representatives of the women who earned the top conference and national awards of their time, including Player of the Year and All-American honors.
Ms. Stack was Central’s first four-year All-American, first player to earn a spot on the U.S. National Team and first to win an international gold medal. Ms. Olhendorf and Amber Gazverde won collegiate individual titles. Michelle Day has the honor of the highest women’s professional finish, just missing out on two different Women’s Professional Bowler’s Tour regional titles with 2nd place honors.
Women’s bowling is not the only game . . . UCM continues to support a bowling program for men on campus as a club sport through the Office of Campus Activities. Their program was also established in the early 1970’s and is one of over 200 in the United States who annually compete to earn the USBC Collegiate men’s national title. Most men’s program in the U.S. function at this level. The men have competed at the highest levels of collegiate play and were the #1 ranked team in the nation for a portion of the 1998 season. Their teams have won numerous top-5 awards in the regular and postseason, highlighted by winning the 1996 ACUI Team Championships and 3rd (1998) and 5th (2001) place finishes at the Men’s Intercollegiate Championships. Accomplishments of alumni male players include a Professional Bowler’s Association title (’85), PBA Rookie of the Year honors (’85), a Team USA member and multiple collegiate All-Americans. Art Brown is the most recent Central male alumni who has come close winning a another PBA title, finishing 3rd at the U.S. Master’s Championships in 2006. Eight players are now or recently have been equipment staff members with Columbia 300, Ebonite, Brunswick, Storm and Hammer.

Coach Holmes enters his 11th season as varsity head coach of Jennies Bowling, his 21st year coaching the bowling program at UCM. Holmes is looking for the squad to reach an elite level once again, a standard of excellence for which Central Missouri has become internationally recognized. The young squad returns most of it’s starting members from a 2010 team which finished 7th at the 2010 NCAA Bowling Championships last year. The six-time Coach of the Year has led his UCM squads to the post-season each of the last ten seasons, with five teams competing on the final day of the year for a National Championship. The 2003 Jennies team earned the program’s first national title at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships, the NCAA’s recognized championship for varsity women’s bowling prior to 2004. Since the program’s “varsity” birth in the fall of 2001, Holmes’ teams have also earned eight top-5 Championships finishes, including three national runners-up (2004, 2005, 2009). UCM has won 28 tournament titles and its players have earned 28 regular AllAmerican awards during his tenure. In addition, players on these teams have been selected for 13 national honors, and 4 women have earned spots to represent the United States as members of the U.S. National Team (Jr. Team USA and Team USA). Promoting the NCAA’s motto of student-athletes, Holmes also stresses the importance of classroom work. His squads have maintained a team GPA of 3.34 during the last ten seasons and produced 66 Academic All-Americans. Holmes has also been instrumental in the growth of NCAA women’s bowling at the administrative level. Since 2003, he has functioned as a member of the NCAA Women’s National Bowling Committee, including serving the last five years as the Secretary/Rules Editor. From 2001-03, Holmes functioned as a Consultant for Varsity Bowling on behalf of College Bowling USA, including a short role as interim CoDirector. He also has served on several Coaches’ Association committees, most notably as the VicePresident for the NCBCA from 1999-2003. Holmes currently serves on the National Tenpin Coaches Association All-American and Coaches’ Poll panels. A current USBC Gold-Level Coach candidate, Holmes has been a USBC-certified Coach since 1991 and was recognized from 2006 to 2010 as one of Bowler’s Journal International’s Top 100 Coaches. Holmes’ first 11 seasons as head coach were spent at Central Missouri as a volunteer coach for the Women’s and Men’s club-sport bowling programs. During these seasons (1990-2001), both squads qualified for postseason competition every year and 11 teams (6 women, 5 Coach Holmes and student-athlete men) earned spots to the National Championships. CMSU’s Samantha Swanson plan the next teams also earned four Conference titles, two National move at the 2005 NCAA Bowling Championships. Championship Finals awards, five top-5 Championships Photo by Bob Badalucco finishes, and produced 30 All-Americans (11 Regular) and two Team USA system players. An Independence, Missouri native, Holmes’ personal bowling career has also been quite successful. He was a four-year All-Conference player (1987-1990) and 1990 Conference Player of the Year for the Central Missouri men’s program. Holmes was also a member of the 1987 team which played in the National Championships and was the first CMSU player to roll a perfect game in intercollegiate competition in 1986. His personal accomplishments include honor scores of 300 (3), 800 (2), and a high average of 224. Holmes earned his Bachelor’s (1990) and Master’s (1992) degrees in the areas of Physical Education, Exercise, and Sports Science at CMSU. In 1992, he accepted a teaching position as an Instructor of Health Education and taught full time until 2001 when he was named the school’s first Women’s Head Coach. Holmes continues to teach courses as a portion of his current position on behalf of the Department of Kinesiology. He is also a Coordinator of Athletic Special Events & Camps for the Department of Athletics. 21 ~ 2011-12 UCM Jennies Bowling ~ 21
2011-12 Preview Jennies Bowling Set For Success in 2011-12 The University of Central Missouri will strive to make another trip to the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championships this season and will need a successful 2011-2012 season to get there. Though the Jennies only had one senior last season, the talented group of underclassman found their stride quickly and once again took Central Missouri to the NCAA Bowling Championships, marking the eighth straight season the Jennies advanced to the event and 10th consecutive year to nationals. “We are really excited about this year. I believe we have a really good group of ladies that can compete with any team in the country. If we can consistently do things well can be in the mix for a national title opportunity. The team has a number of young, skilled players and a great deal of experience that has been missing the past two seasons,” head coach Ron Holmes said. The Jennies will once again have a very tough schedule in 2012. “We traditionally try to schedule a really tough set of events and a difficult group of teams every year. We believe the hard matches provide us with great tests during the season and allows the squad to become experienced enough for a post-season run,” Holmes said. Leading the Cardinal and Black this season will be lone senior Kim Wallace. “Kim is a great resource for us. She’s been in the National Championship all three years here and competed in the Finals.” Holmes added, “last year she earned AllAmerica honors, which will really provide some confidence.” Last season Wallace had a game average of 198.2, second highest on the team, and a strike percentage of 49 percent. Kim Wallace A strong group of juniors will provide the Jennies with added skills and depth. The junior class for 2012 is highlighted by Natalie Jimenez. Last season the Rowland Heights, California native was named National Player of the Year by the NTCA and she led the Jennies with a 206.5 average and strike percentage with 52 percent. “Natalie was the D-II Player of the Year last year and finished third place for National Player of the Year honors in alldivisions,” Holmes said. “We hope she can continue that level of performance and on-lane leadership into this season.” Two other juniors that will also make a significant impact on
year’s team are Kelli Schroeder and Larissa Lantto. Schroeder had a 193.4 game average last year while Lantto’s mark was 177.3. “The growth of our junior class(Kelli and Larissa) will be a key to our team’s success this year,” Holmes said. Sophomore Kara Richard, last season’s Division-II Rookie of the Year as a freshman, will look to contribute to the Jennies’ success as well in 2012. “Kara has worked very hard on her Kara Richard game in the off-season and she has some additional skills that can be added to this year’s squad,” Holmes said. The Jennies also have a very talented and diverse group of freshmen, led by Gabriella Mayfield, Shannon Dexter, and Megan Bentham. All three will see significant playing time, with Mayfield earning the starting nod. “I really like this year’s group of freshmen because they bring such a solid yet different set of skills, Holmes said. “Gabby (Mayfield) has the physical tools to play the game more dynamically than most female players can perform. She will just need some time to gain collegiatelevel experience but has a chance to contribute and help us right away.” The Jennies open up the 2011-2012 campaign October 15-16 at the Newman Mid-States Invitational in Wichita, KS. Meet the Jennies Kim Wallace Coach Holmes on Kim Wallace: ”Last year Kim was finally able to put together a year in which she was able to relax, stay within her game and was able to limit her mistakes. Kim’s physical game evolved a great deal last year, which allowed her to stay aggressive and more consistent with her shot making. This year I am looking for continued focus and aggressiveness from Kim, in addition to making adjustments quickly. If she can continue her progress, Kim will have a great senior season and provide the leadership the team will need this season.” As a Junior: Had a break-through season as a regular starter in 201011, finishing 2nd overall for the Jennies by averaging 198.21 while playing in 106 matches...Kim was recognized for her accomplishments by being chosen as an NTCA Honorable Mention All-American...finished four events among top-15 competitors, including her selection to the AllTournament teams at the Mid-States Classic in Kansas and the Jeannette Lee Invitational in Virginia. As a Sophomore: Spent the year starting for the Jennies or coming in as the first-substitute but was playing behind two All-Americans on the depth chart...played in all 13 events, averaging 180.54...earned two Top 25 finishes, including the Jeanette Lee Invitational and the Holiday Classic. As a Freshman: Led all Jennies in season average at 192.63 for 45 team games... also led the season in player strike percentage at 42.1 percent. Kim earned her first All-Tournament Team selection at the Fontbonne Griffin Invitational. Meet the Jennies Natalie Jimenez Coach Holmes on Natalie Jimenez: ”Natalie had a tremendous second season, establishing herself as one of the nation’s best in the country at all levels. I think Natalie would also be the first to admit there were times that she struggled and could have possibly performed better if she would have possibly been a little more aggressive with her adjustments. I have challenged Natalie this year to become more proactive and visionary with her adjustments so she can be smarter and quicker with them. I think she can be even better and more consistent if she figures out what pre-adjustments are going to work best for her.” As a Sophomore: Natalie picked up right where she left off as a freshman by earning NTCA all-division 1st Team All-American honors and was named the DII/III National Player of the Year. Natalie led the team with a 206.49 average during 117 matches, collecting five AllTournament Team selections and seven top 10 finishes. Natalie’s season average, strike percentage, and spare percentages earned her spots in the Jennies All-Time record books. As a Freshman: Named NTCA Division II Rookie of the Year and Honorable Mention All American...played in 123 matches over 13 events...averaged 191.43...earned two top 10 finishes, including Most Valuable Player honors at the Alabama A&M Holiday Classic where she averaged 230. In High School: Was #1 in the nation for youth females competing on USBC Sporting Bowling conditions. She was selected to the 2009 California All-Star Team and was the California Scratch All-Events Champion in 2006 & 2007.

Season
27 ~ 2011-12 UCM Jennies Bowling ~ 27
Meet the Jennies Kelli Schroeder Coach Holmes on Kelli Schroeder: ”Kelli really made some great strides last year in improving her physical game and learning more about what adjustments she can use to be successful. Kelli’s always had very good spare shooting skills and the ability to keep the ball close to her target, but now she has expanded her abilities and these changes have made a major difference in her performance. Kelli has not become a very solid, diverse player and I expect her skills to now grow more efficient as she gains more experience. I look for Kelli to have a very productive season as a player and co-captain.” As a Sophomore: Made major advances in her game and moved into a regular starting role by the end of the season. Kelli played in 100 matches in 2010-11 and finished the year fourth on the Jennies with a 193.44 average. She led the team with a 95.3% single pin spare conversion rate , which is good for 2nd on the All-Time Records list. Kelli earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Big Red Classic and had three top-25 finishes. Meet the Jennies Amanda Mulcahy Coach Holmes on Amanda Mulcahy: ”Amanda continued to progress with her skills last season to a level which allowed her to be a valuable contributor and spot-starter for the team. The only thing that limited her playing time last season was a super-demanding academic schedule and other athletes on the team with more experience in front of her. She worked tremendously hard to improve her ball roll and hand positions to create better options to the pocket. This year should allow Courtney to make additional strides with her physical game and she will be called upon to fill a couple of specialty roles from the right side of the lane. “Gabby arrives at Central Missouri after an outstanding senior season and summer youth campaign which demonstrated a wealth of ability against elite-level competition. Gabby will have an opportunity to step into the line-up immediately and provide a high-quality addition to the young roster. She has the ability to create very heavy ball roll and should match up with collegiate conditions quite well. It is my hope that Gabby has the opportunity to discover more about her own game and expand her physical adjustments this season; however, her biggest challenge will be learning to manage the stressors of NCAA play and multiple activities associated with higher education. If Gabby can become comfortable with collegiate bowling and college life, she should have a very productive season and career at UCM.”

“Shannon comes to Central after a very productive youth and high school career in the upper northwest United States. Due to her geographic location, Shannon has not had access to some of the higher level national youth events but she done a wonderful job in the competitions she has played in. Shannon’s physical game is very simple to manage and she should be able to pick up the collegiate game very quickly. Shannon’s ball roll will be useful for us when we need a straighter player and she will be counted on early to fill multiple roles as a substitute until she learns our system. I believe her bowling skills will expand very nicely as she becomes more familiar with NCAA competition. Shannon will fill several roles throughout her career and I hope she uses this season to get comfortable with college life.”

“Megan comes to Central Missouri after a great high school and youth career in Texas. Megan’s senior year of high school play was limited by a hand injury but she shows no reoccurring effects as she has moved to this level of competition and is back to full activities. When you watch Megan play, it is very easy to see that her physical game and type of ball roll can be of tremendous benefit at the collegiate level if she can maintain her consistency and speed control. Those two areas of improvement are what we are looking to help Megan gain this year while she also learns about NCAA bowling. Megan is a very energetic, hard working individual and I believe her bowling skills will expand very nicely as she becomes more familiar with the physical game adjustments she can create. Megan will function in several roles for us during her freshman year and I believe she will be a very solid player for us at UCM.”

The keys for her during this season will be to build a more consistent release, learn better ball speed control and improve her ball roll. Morgan is a very hard worker and I believe her bowling skills will expand very nicely as she becomes more familiar with her own physical game options. It is my hope that Morgan will be able to use 2011-12 to become comfortable with all the elements of studentathlete life and build her bowling skills to a more consistent level.”

“Courtney came to Central Missouri last season and used 2010-11 to become oriented to life as a collegiate student-athlete and to establish a greater understanding of her physical skills. Courtney showed steady improvement throughout last year and appears ready to take a couple more steps forward with her skills. I believe she has a much better handle on what parts of her game need improvement, especially when it comes to speed control and playing on collegiate lane conditions. The key this year for Courtney will be to maintain her academic standards while participating in the full set of student-athlete activities that go along with life as an NCAA student-athlete. I believe Courtney is well on her way to managing these areas efficiently and I look forward to watching her progression during the season.”

“Amber comes to Central after successful youth bowling career in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Although Amber did not get to compete in high school bowling, she has earned valuable experience while bowling in youth tournaments in the mid-west United States. Amber has also been able to play in various national level events and had a decent amount of success in those contests as well. Amber’s wonderful enthusiasm and desire to improve her skills will help her tremendously and I wouldn't mind if her energy rubbed off onto the other members of the team. NCAA Women’s National Championships— Taylor, MI
Although they were a fairly young team, the Jennies thought their body of work during the 2010-11 regular season would put them in a position to be considered for the National Championships. On March 30, they were granted their wish . . . A berth to the compete as one of only eight teams to with a chance to win the 2011 NCAA Bowling title. The #5 Jennies arrived at the Championship with great optimism after finishing the spring semester with four top-three event performances, including one tournament title. During the qualifying rounds of competition, the Jennies held their own against the most competitive championships field ever assembled. Central Missouri would complete the day with victories over #1 ranked UMES, #6 Arkansas State and #8 Sam Houston State. The 3-4 match record resulted in a #5 seed heading into Championships bracket play. Natalie Jimenez led the way with a 206.1 average, followed closely by Kelli Schroeder with an average of 205.5; both student-athletes finished in the top 20. Kara Richard was third with 199.1. Day two would find Central Missouri against a very familiar foe this season—Vanderbilt University. The Jennies jumped out to an early match lead with only the last shot of Game 1 not resulting in a strike for an almost perfect 297 game. However, UCM could not fend off the consistent, high level play of the eventual 2011 national runner-up and lost their opening bracket match 1-4. Round two of the double-elimination format positioned UCM against #6 Kutztown University. Again, the Jennies would start our with a solid beginning and led 2-0, only to fall behind at key points of the contest. Ultimately the Jennies would lose the match 3-4, thereby eliminating them from the competition. Central Missouri finished the season with an 87-35 record. The 2010-11 Jennies learned a great number of things during the season, including glimpse of what their young and talented team is capable of. The ladies also gained a great deal of valuable experience and solidified several roster positions for the future. Sophomore Natalie Jimenez (1st Team), Freshman Kara Richard (Honorable Mention) and Junior Kim Wallace (Honorable Mention) were recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association for their outstanding play during the season as All-Americans. Elite Level Players Central Missouri is commonly recognized for developing elite-level players and providing them an opportunity to showcase their talents. Throughout the program’s history, several members have been honored as one of the finest collegiate players in the country by being selected as an All-American. The various Coaches’ Associations select the top athletes of each season for these awards, with the top five women of the group earning 1st Team honors, followed by 2nd Team, 3rd Team, and Honorable Mention. In just the last decade, 14 Central Missouri women have earned a total of 25 regular All–American honors. Post Season Success through the Years Central Missouri Women’s Bowling has accomplished many things throughout its history, including a high level of success in the post-season. The Jennies are one of only three teams to qualify for every NCAA Bowling Championship and have played in the Finals five of the last ten years. In addition to the NCAA years, the women have earned their way to another two Championship-day appearances during the last 15 years. Along the way, various story lines have developed and great experiences are worth reflecting on . . . 2003 . . . An Unlikely Cast Shall Lead Them . . . During the 2002-03 season, the Jennies played very well during the regular season and had earned a record of 144-25. They won three regular season tournaments and top-5 finishes in three others. Eight individuals, including 2002 National Player of the Year Amber Gazverde, earned event honors during the season. For a team that returned all but one starter from the previous year’s 3rd place Championship finish, this experienced squad was very good, but was not considered as a front runner for the national title. The team began the post-season by earning their way to the national finals through a 2nd place finish at the West Sectional Championships. The Jennies entered the Championships ranked #5 in the nation. The 2003 Championships were held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 24-26. During the qualifying rounds, Central’s women experienced very sub-par performances and buried themselves in 12th place by the end of the first day. At the start of Day 2, a line-up change resulted in the removal of the left-handed Gazverde, and a complete shuffling of the roster order. Inserted into the anchor position was senior Tracie Driggs, a part-time starter who had performed very well during the preliminary rounds. The first match against #3 ranked Nebraska began with two game losses, followed by four straight victories in the best 4 out of 7 match. Next came match victories over #2 ranked West Texas A&M University and #1 ranked Wichita State University, winning 10 games in a row and 15 of their last 16 games. Championship Day found Central Missouri undefeated and in the Winner’s Bracket against #1 Wichita State for a second time. Although they had been defeated on the previous day, WSU had won their way back through the Consolation Bracket to reach the Semi-Finals and had knocked CMSU out of the exact same position at the 2002 National Championships. This time however, Central never wavered and was up to the challenge. The Jennies defeated Wichita State for a second straight day (4-1) to advance to the Championship Finals against Florida State University. Florida State had earned their way to the Championship match by finishing second after the qualifying rounds and winning their side of the bracket Saturday morning. The Finals would be a winner-take-all best 2 out of 3 Baker Match, with FSU as the higher seed. Feeding off a very high level of emotion and enthusiasm, Central Missouri rolled strikes on four of their first five shots and won Game 1 by a score of 199 - 183. During Game #2, lane changes and great shot making by FSU forced CMSU into an early deficit, ultimately losing 177 - 233. At the start of Game #3, Central made several adjustments to compensate for the quickly changing lane conditions. A spare by senior Becky Graffia and key strikes by senior Erin Landford and sophomore Amber Lester propelled Central Missouri to an early lead. Two more spares and another Landford strike extended the lead margin. With a filled 10th frame by senior Tracie Driggs and junior Amber Gazverde, the ladies had sealed their 187 - 123 victory and first National title. Even without their traditional starting line-up, Central Missouri found a way to use their team depth and talents to accomplish the ultimate goal. For her outstanding performance throughout the All photos provided by USBC National Championships, Tracie Driggs was named to the 2003 Women’s All-Tournament Team.

P o st Se ason Succe ss th ro ugh th e Ye ars 2008-09 . . . A Gutsy Bunch of Athletes . . . In 2008-09, the team was going to have to win the title a completely different way – succeed without a dominant player. Gone were a four-time national player of the year and three starters who had led the team for several seasons. This squad would have plenty of experience with five seniors, but most of this year’s ladies were former role players with limited starting experience. The upperclassmen and a group of freshman were put into action immediately. Through lots of growing pains and hard work, UCM finished the season with a record of 84-36 and were led by All-American Senior Alyssa Surges and former NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year Jamie Mitchell. Central Missouri competed in the post-season with a renewed sense of purpose after likely being one of the last teams selected for the NCAA Championships. The squad battled through the early rounds with great energy and finished qualifying as the #6 seed. On Day 2, UCM began its bracket play with a 4-0 victory over 2008 Champion Maryland-Eastern Shore, but would fall in the second round to eventual semi-finalist Delaware State 1-4. However, the team rebounded quickly to defeat 2007 Champion and top-ranked Vanderbilt University 4-0 to advance to the national semi-finals. Fairleigh Dickinson University, the 2006 Champion, would be the Jennies’ next opponent. Central would defeat FDU 4-1 on Friday to advance and would defeat FDU again 4-2 on Championship Saturday for it’s fifth trip to the title match since 1998. Senior Allison Gerding-Scully makes a shot during the final match Photo by Megan Raymond
Even though the team played with tremendous heart throughout the Championships, UCM could not maintain it’s momentum and fell to top-seeded Nebraska (2-4) and finished as the National Runner-Up. For her outstanding efforts throughout the Championships, Theresa Christopher was selected to the Championships AllTournament Team.

2004-05 . . . Different Cast, Same Incredible Performances. . . In each of the last two years, CMSU had lost four starters from their lineup due to graduation or personal issues. This season’s team would have to get it done with a young and very inexperienced cast – and they certainly exceeded expectations. The group completed the season using 2 to 4 freshmen and in the starting line-up. They finished the season with a record of 89-21 and were led by All-American sophomore Tina Peak and National Player and Freshman of the Year, Bryanna Caldwell. Senior Alecia Hefter, a 2004 All-American, rejoined the roster during the spring for the post-season run.

At the NCAA Championships, Central used its youthful talent to stay near the top of the leader board and finished as the #4 seed after qualifying. During this performance, Tina Peak again attained perfection by rolling a 300 game and became the only woman to ever shoot two 300s at the NCAA Championships. A first-round loss to New Jersey City University (2-4) in the double-elimination bracket would force Central Missouri to take a different path to the finals this year. (continued next page)

P o st Se ason Succe ss th ro ugh th e Ye ars Great rebound performances and victories against Sacred Heart (4-2), Maryland-Eastern Shores (4-1), and Bethune—Cookman University (4-3) propelled the Jennies to Championship Day for the third straight season. In the Championship Semi-Finals, CMSU soundly defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University 4-0 to earn a trip back the NCAA finals. Unlike last year, Central Missouri would come into Championship Day with one loss and would have to defeat the #1 seed twice to win the title. Although the team played with tremendous effort, CMSU could not defeat the defending national champion Nebraska squad (2-4), and finished national runner-up for a second straight year. For her performance, Peak was selected to the Championships All-Tournament Team.

2003-04 . . . Trying to Make NCAA History . . . The 2003-04 season began with the Jennies as the reigning National Champions – however, this season was to be a completely new and different experience as the NCAA had now adopted Women’s Bowling as a Championship sport. Therefore, all NCAA teams would be competing for the first-ever NCAA Bowling title. The team finished the season with a record of 72-23, became the first NCAA team to shoot a 300 Baker game and was one of the favorites to win the first ever NCAA Championship. Leading the way for the squad was senior Amber Gazverde, the 2004 DII-III National Player of the Year. In addition, the roster included Tina Peak, 2004 Freshman of the Year and three other members of the 2003 national championship squad.

At the NCAA Championships in Houston, TX, Central battled to stay at the top of the leader board throughout the qualifying rounds and emerged as the #1 Seed for the Championship Bracket. Bracket victories over Winston-Salem State (4-1), New Jersey City (4-2) and Nebraska (4-3) vaulted Central into Saturday. Championship Day found CMSU vs. Nebraska again, as they had won their way through the Consolation Bracket to reach the Finals.

Unfortunately, CMSU could not finish their run, as Nebraska defeated the Jennies in both Championship matches (2-4, 2-4) to earn the first NCAA title. For her performance, Amber Gazverde was selected to the NCAA Championships AllTournament Team. Tina Peak also put her name in the Championship record books as one of two individuals to roll a perfect 300 game during qualifying.

P o st Se ason Succe ss th ro ugh th e Ye ars 2001-02 . . . The Start of a Very Successful Decade . . . 2001-02 was the first year the Jennies squad had been elevated to varsity status at Central Missouri but the team was very experienced and one of the top teams in the country. The squad returned four starters from the previous season, including All-American Amber Gazverde and top recruit Erin Landford. The 2001-02 season went extremely well for the Jennies, earning a record of 98-22 and entering the post-season as the #4 ranked team in the country. Amber Gazverde was the consensus 2002 National Player of the Year, averaging over 212 for the regular season. The 2001-02 Championships were held in Buffalo, NY and the qualifying rounds placed the Jennies as the #7 seed headed to match play. Bracket play for the Central Missouri went very well on Day 2 as they defeated everyone they faced (Sacred Heart 4-1, Eric CC 4-1, Indiana St. 4-0) and left the Jennies as the only undefeated team in their side of the bracket. Championship Day began with Central facing off against #3 seed Wichita State
University. After a highly competitive match, the Jennies fell to WSU 3-4. Although they only had one bracket loss, CMSU was out of national championship contention.

In the consolation finals, Central faced off against Florida State University. Although they started the contest very slow due to the previous loss, the team rebounded to win the match 4-3 and earn 3rd place honors. For her performance, Sarah Kelly earned All -Tournament Team honors.

1997-98 . . . Before the NCAA, the Championships Experience . . . Although just prior to reaching Varsity status, the 1997-98 team deserves special recognition of coming within a whisper of earning the team’s first national championship. Due to being prior to NCAA competition, the team played in the same post-season system as the 2001-03 squads. The Jennies finished the regular season ranked #5 team in the country and were led by two-time All-American Lisa Stack and former Rookie of the Year Erin McDonnell. The Championships were held in Madison, WI, with final matches being held in the firstever college stadium fieldhouse. The squad finished the qualifying rounds as the #5 seed, with Theresa Dames leading the early team performances. Championship Saturday involved Central defeating #2 seed California State—Fresno and #4 seed Sacred Heart University to reach the final match. The ESPN-televised finals pitted the Jennies against top-seeded and #1 ranked Morehead State University in a two-game, total pinfall match. Although the team started the match slowly in Game 1, Central quickly made up the difference to begin Game 2 with

three consecutive strikes and held the lead into the middle portion of the final game.

Team Roster (front row to back, left to right): Sherree Bell, April Erickson, Carrie Hayes, Jodi Meese, Theresa Dames, Erin McDonnell, Lisa Stack, Linda Frye
Unfortunately MSU rolled key strikes during the two final frames, with ‘98 National Player of the Year Kelly Kulick rolling a double in the 10th frame to win the title (374-390).
