Photo credentials allow access to both the sideline and press box/row areas, and must be displayed at all times. NCAA rules require photographers to remain in their designated areas. Any questions should be referred to the UCM Athletic Media Relations Office.

Game Services

A limited number of telephones and telephone lines for electronic transmission of stories are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be several network cable lines available for home basketball, baseball, and football games as well as wireless internet in those three venues. A fax machine is available on a limited basis.

Student-Athlete Interviews

Student-Athlete interviews during the week must be arranged through the Athletic Media Relations Office. Please make arrangements in advance. For telephone interviews, players will be instructed to return all calls collect or toll free. Home telephone and cell phone numbers, and email addresses will NOT be released. All postgame interviews are to be conducted outside of the locker room area following a customary 10-minute “cooling-off period.”

Multipurpose Building Considered one the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, the Multipurpose Building is in its 36th year of service to the university. The $5.5 million facility was built at no expense to the State of Missouri, as financing was accomplished solely through student fees. The “Multi” truly lives up to its name, as it is one of the busiest places on campus. In addition to being the home of Mules and Jennies basketball and indoor track and field, Jennies volleyball, and Mules wrestling, the facility is used by university students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public. Designed primarily for recreational use, the building features a spacious main arena with a sixlane track, a swimming pool, five indoor and two outdoor handball/racquetball courts, areas for free and universal weights, an activities area, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and offices for UCM’s Intercollegiate Athletics staff. The main arena can accommodate four basketball or six volleyball courts at one time or all of the events for an indoor track meet. Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 8,500 for basketball and volleyball, making it the largest such facility in the MIAA. It also seats 1,640 fans for indoor track meets and 10,000 people for concerts. Numerous special events take place in the Multi each year. It hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s state volleyball tournament from 1988 until 2008, and state high school playoff games for basketball are also played annually in the building.

In addition, the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are contested in the Multipurpose Building. The facility is also used for UCM’s annual commencement ceremonies, major concerts, and other UCM events. The Multi underwent a major renovation during the summer of 1998. An inlaid-wood floor was installed in the main arena, replacing most of the original Tartan surface and eliminating the need for the portable-wood floor that had been used for basketball since 1988. Additionally, the running track was resurfaced and new jumping and vaulting pits were created for track and field.

The 2013-14 season is Justin Ensign’s fourth season as the head coach of the Central Missouri Mules Wrestling squad. In his first season as head coach Ensign guided the Mules to a 7-7 dual record with three individual national qualifiers, finishing tied for 30th in the nation. In his second season the Mules were plagued with injuries, finishing with a 3-14 record in duals. However, the Mules had numerous top finishers at several tournaments throughout the season. Ensign also helped coach 2011-12 All-Region honoree Nick Viterisi, who posted an impressive 28-15 record for the Mules in his redshirt-sophomore year. Last season the Mules finished 6-7, with a 2-3 conference record. Ensign finished the 2012-13 season coaching Eric Mateo, a redshirt sophomore, in the NCAA-II Wrestling Championship, who went 21-21 in the 2012-2013 season. Prior to being named the eighth bench boss in Central Missouri history, Ensign spent two years as a graduate assistant coach under legendary Mules Wrestling coach Robin Ersland, who left UCM for the head coaching position at Minot State (N.D.) following the 2009-2010 season. During the two years Ensign was a graduate assistant under Ersland the Mules compiled a 1416 dual record, while finishing in the top 25 at the NCAA National Championships both seasons (18th in 2009, 22nd in 2010). Ensign also helped guide the Mules to five individual All-American performances. Before coming to Central Missouri, Ensign spent one season as an assistant coach at Division I Wagner University in Staten Island, N.Y., after a four-year career for the Seahawks. During his time at Wagner, he was named team MVP two times and spent two seasons ranked in the top five in the CAA. He was also a two-year team captain, and two-time Iron Man award winner. Ensign was a four-year starter, twice at both 141 and 149 pounds. As an assistant coach during the 2007-08 season for Wagner, he helped the Seahawks finish fourth at the Virginia duals. Ensign also had two NCAA-I East Region third place winners. The Cherry Hill, N.J. native earned his bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education and Sociology from Wagner in 2007 and earned his master’s in Sports Management from Central Missouri in spring, 2011.

Blake Gillis Blake Gillis is in his second season as top assistant for the Mules wrestling program. Gillis cames to Central Missouri from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where he was a four-time All-American, fourtime NCAA Finalist and won a national title in 2007. Gillis also won two team national championships and had a pair of runnerup finishes. Gillis previously coached the Mules from 2008 to December of 2009 on a team that had three All-Americans before he left to train full-time in freestyle wrestling. He placed fourth in the 2010 U.S. Open and qualified for the 2010 World Team Trials. The Spencer, Iowa native earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Public Relations from Wartburg in 2008 and is currently working towards his master’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science Administration at UCM. Gillis and his wife, Krystal, have two children, Grayson and Avery.

Sean White

Sean White is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Mules wrestling program after spending the previous two years on the coaching staff at Neosho County Community College. While at NCCC, he helped coach the Panthers to an 11th place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in 2012, including a national champion at 125 pounds and two All-Americans and a 13th place finish in 2013, with a national champion at 133 pounds and four All-Americans. Prior to NCCC he was the assistant strength & conditioning coach at Colorado Mesa Unviersity, where he worked with 600 student-athletes in the area of strength, power, agility and speed. He also assisted with the Colorado Mesa wrestling team. White is a graduate of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He was a Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion and helped lead the Knights to four conference titles and two NCAA-III National Championships. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fitness Management from Wartburg and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sports Management at UCM.

Assistant Coaches Dylan Azinger Dylan Azinger is in his first season as a graduate assistant with the Mules wrestling program, following a career at Wartburg College. He was a two-time NCAA-III All-American and two-time Iowa Conference Champion for the Knights, helping Wartburg to four straight conference titles and three NCAA National Championships.

Azinger was a two-time Iowa State Placewinner at Central DeWitt High School and was also an all-state football player. He graduated from Wartburg in the spring of 2013 and is currently pursuing his masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Sports Management at UCM.

Brad Hughes Brad Hughes enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Mules after wrestling at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa last year. Hughes was a two-time national qualifier while at Northwestern College in the 285 pound weight class.

Clarence Neely Clarence Neely is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Mules wrestling program. Neely wrestled for the University of Central Missouri last season. He finished the sesason with a 11-5 overall record. Neely also wrestled at the University of Missouri and Missouri Baptist. During his time at Missouri Baptist, Neely was an NAIA All-American.

He is originally from Knob Noster, Missouri and is a 2006 graduate of Knob Noster High School. Hughes placed fourth in the state of Missouri at 189 pounds in 2005.

In high school Neely wrestled at Blue Springs High School, where he was a three year starter. Neely was the Missouri State runner-up in 2006, and the Missouri State Champion in 2008. Neely was a two time district champion, and a three time All-American. His senior year Neely was ranked 13th in the United States. Neely studied communications in his undergrad.

As a sophomore Balty wrestled at 125 pounds and had a 6-15 overall record with 19 takedowns, and one fall. He was named to the NCAA Division-II honorable mention All-Academic Team. As a freshman he wrestled at 125 pounds and had a 5-28 overall record with three takedowns, 25 escapes, six reversals and one win by fall. In high school Balty was a two-time conference champion while at Logan-Rogersville High School as well as a one-time district champion and state qualifier. Balty is the son of Lyn and Debbie Balty. He is a Physical Education major.

As a freshman he had a 9-28 record last season, with three falls, one tech fall and 15 take downs. In high school Boyd was a four year letterwinner. He made the All-State, All-Conference and All-District teams. His senior season he had a 48-6 overall record, and a career record of 114-56. Boyd is the son of Mike and Patty Boyd. He is an education major.

As a junior Brier wrestled at 197 and 184 pounds. He finished the season with a 20-19 overall record, with 11 falls, 34 takedowns and one win by major decision. He was named to the NCAA Division-II honorable mention All-Academic Team for the second time in his career. He led the team in pins (11), and was second in reversals (10). He was fourth in escapes (37), and had the third fastest fall on the team (:40) As a sophomore Brier wrestled at 165 pounds and compiled a 13-18 overall record with six wins by fall, 28 takedowns, 30 escapes and seven reversals. Brier was named to the NCAA Division II honorable mention All-Aademic Team, and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. As a freshman Brier had a winning percentage of .333 and an overall record of 13-26 while wrestling at 165 pounds. He had two falls, one technical fall and one major decision as a freshman. In high school Brier was a State medalist as a senior, and twotime state qualifier. He was a four-year letter winner, and voted the teams most valuable wrestler twice. Brier is the son of Steve and Karri Brier. He is majoring in Safety Management.

As a freshman Clark competed unattached, and finished 10-10 with three falls and three takedowns. In high school Clark was a four-year letterwinner. His senior year he went 42-12 and finished fourth at State. He was also named to the All-Conference and All-District team his senior year. Clark is the son of Rick and Kim Clark. He was second in reversals (10) and in three-point near falls (9) As a redshirt freshman Mateo wrestled at 133 pounds, and had a 25-13 overall record with four wins by fall, 47 takedowns, 39 escapes, and three reversals. In high school Strope was All-State twice, and qualified for state four times. He was the State Champion his senior year. Strope is the son of Michael and Irene Strope. He is a Pre-Physical Therapy major.

In high school Thomson was a four time letter winner, and qualified for state all four years. He finished third at State his junior year and was the State Champion his senior year. He made the All-Conference Team twice and was the District Wrestler of the Year and won a sportmanship award his senior year. Thomson also lettered in tennis twice. Thomson is the son of David and Traci Thomson. He is majoring in Business Managment.

Evan Young Freshman| 157 lbs. Odessa, Mo. Odessa HS

In high school Young was a four time letter winner and two time District Champ. He finished fourth at State as a freshman, third as a junior, and second as a senior. He also made the Academic AllConference team three times. Odessa High School was the District Champion in 2011 and 2012, they were also Conference Champs in 2012. They went on to place fifth at State in 2012. Last year, Odessa High School was second in the District and finished third in State. Young also played football for Odessa. He made the AllConference Defense and Offense team twice. He was also name All District Running Back, and All District Defensive Back. Young is the son of Brian and Stephanie Young. He is majoring in Design and Drafting.

2013-2014

Season Preview The University of Central Missouri Mules Wrestling squad begins their season ranked fifth in the MIAA 2013-2014 Preseason Poll. The Mules finished third in the MIAA last season, with a 6-7 overall record. This year the Mules have 12 returners, including Eric Mateo, the only National Qualifier from UCM last season. The Mules will look to their returning members, along with some fresh faces to make an impact this season. Mules head coach, Justin Ensign breaks down the Mules weight-by-weight below. 125 pounds: “Freshman Malacai Collins from Warrensburg is looking pretty slick, he’s pretty good, and he is someone we recruited because he is talented, not just because he is a local kid. He’s a good athlete. He’ll be pushed by Ty Balty who is a junior and former Academic All-American. Ty works really hard so that will be a good battle there, with two guys that work really hard.” 133 pounds: “Hunter Neighbors is looking like the favorite. Last year he started the year at 125, and by the end he was wrestling 133. He had some good wins, he’s looking better, he’s improved in a lot of the areas he was looking weak in last year.” Andy Robinson is also expected to wrestle at 133 pounds. 141 pounds: “We have a returning national qualifier Eric Mateo. It’s going to be a battle between him and Aaron Engle, who had a pretty good off season. Aaron is very talented, and has a brother that has had a lot of success at the Division III level, which I think is pushing him to want to be more successful.” 149 pounds: “Frank Cagnina is our big transfer this year. He was a top recruit, and has wrestled at the Division I National Tournament before. Frank had an off season knee surgery, so the big thing with him will be to stay healthy. Frank works really hard. Depth-wise we’re pretty deep there, we have several guys that can slide into that spot if we need them to. Behind Cagnina, we have a freshman, and state champion, Logan Carier.” 157 pounds: “We have Zeb Spicer who was a starter two years ago, last year he was injured. He’s coming back, and he’s looking good. It’s taking some time to get him back to a high level, because he had hip surgery, but he is still looking good. Zeb, is a pinner and with his experience all we really need is to keep him healthy.” Aside from Spicer, the Mules have Alex Schmersahl, a transfer from Arizona State, and freshmen Brennan Johnson and Evan Young at 157 pounds.

165 pounds: “ We have our returner Ty Loethen and Josh Thomson, who is a transfer from Maryville in St. Louis. Thomson had a pretty good redshirt year for them, and still has four years left. Ty and Josh actually wrestled each other in a tournament, and Ty won 3-0, but it was a close match. But that right there is the competition that will keep Ty honest. Josh is a former Missouri State champ, we’ll find a spot somewhere.” 174 pounds: “Joshua Ploof was the starter last year, but he has to sit first semester because he only has one semester of eligibility left, so he won’t start until second semester. In the meantime we have Mike Boyd, a freshman that has really looked good so far, he’s got a big strong frame and is working really hard.” 184 pounds: “ Jacob Reiman will likely be our guy. He was out most of last season with a shoulder injury. He is a redshirt sophomore. He just needs to step up, the talent is there.” 197 pounds: “ Todd Brier started the year at 184 and then moved up to 197 last year. He looks good, he won over 20 matches last year. He’s also a good student, and has been Academic All-American twice. This is his senior year, and this is all he has left. “ Roy Hickman and Nick Lovejoy will also be wrestling at 195 pounds. Hickman is currently playing football for the Mules. 285 pounds: “ We have Jake Clark, who we red shirted last year, placed in some tournaments. There is also Derek Morgan, a freshman from Knob Noster. He’s a hard worker, and looks better each day. When we recruited him we knew we had something special. “ Season Outlook “The big thing for us is getting tough. We were picked dead last in the conference last season, and then we ended up finishing third behind two teams that got trophies at the national competition. We have a tough league, and we’ll have a rough road to get guys to the National tournament. We just need to be tougher, battle and compete. I think we want it, we just need guys to step up and place. We need to be more consistent. They’ve been working hard, and they’re pretty positive so far. I think it will really depend on how they react when they get knocked down, we are going to wrestle some tough competition. We’re going to wrestle some tough teams, to help get us ready for the post season. We want to finish stronger. “

Central Missouri started their 2012-13 season hosting the UCM Open. Ty Loethen and Hunter Neighbors both were place winners in the tournament. Loethen finished third at 165 pounds, and Neighbors finished sixth at 125 pounds. The Mules also competed in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open in the opening weeks of the season, but had no place winners in the tournament. The Mules won their first dual of the 2012-13 season against Benedictine 28-13. In December the Mules competed in the Simpson Invitational where the team finished fourth out of thirteen teams, with five place winners. Laramie Allembaugh was the 125 pound runner-up, Nick Viterisi at 149 pounds and Tim Tauquoi at 285 pounds finished third, Nolan Smith finished fifth at 285 pounds, and Todd Brier finished sixth at 184 pounds. The Mules won their following two duals against Wentworth, 54-6, and Arkansas Baptist 53-0. At the Newman Jet Invitational the Mules placed sixth as a team, with two members of the Mules squad placing in the top three, and four place winners total. Tauquoi placed for a second time in the month of December, this time finishing second at 285 pounds. Loethen finished third at 165 pounds, while Viterisi and Eric Mateo finished fourth at 149 and 141 pounds respectively. Central Missouri finished out the month of December with the NWCA Midwest Classis, where the team finished 16th out of 26 teams, with Viterisi finishing second at 149 pounds, and Tuaqoui finishing seventh at 285 pounds. After a few weeks off for winter break the Mules picked their season back up in January, hosting the UCM Duals and the Roger Denker Open. The Mules went 0-6 at the UCM Duals. At the Roger Denker Open the Mules had five place winners, including Tuaquoi placing second at 285 pounds, Mitchell Bradley and Allembaugh placing fourth and fifth at 125 pounds, Brandon Russow placing sixth at 157 pounds, and Jacob Clark placing fifth at 285 pounds. Dual Record: 6-7 Also in January, Central Missouri beat Truman State at Truman 24-9, Home: 0-7 | Away: 5-0 | Neutral: 1-0 before competing in the Missouri Valley Invitational were they finished sixth of sixteen teams, with four place winners. Mateo and Clarence Benedictine College....................W 28-13 Neely both claimed the top spot, while Brier and Tuaquoi both finished Wentworth Military....................... W 54-6 fifth. The Mules rounded out the month of January with two wins over Arkansas Baptist............................ W 53-0 Lindenwood and McKendree on the road, and a loss against Central Nebraska-Kearney*.................... L 9-37 Oklahoma at home. The Mules also attended the Missouri Valley Open, Newman................................... L 19-25 where they had seven place finishers. Charles M. Ambrose, Ed.D., became the 15th president of the University of Central Missouri on Aug. 1, 2010. A career educator who is a fervent advocate of servant leadership and engaged learning, he is committed to promoting academic quality, excellence in teaching and the collegiate experience. During his first year at UCM, President Ambrose helped guide the institution through the building of a new Strategic Governance Model in partnership with the Association for Governing Boards. He also provided leadership through an extensive administrative and academic review process designed to provide a stronger, more viable educational experience for students, while also cutting operational costs.

Ambrose sought to build student enrollment, an effort that continues to pay off with the largest enrollment in the university’s 140-year history. He has also begun a major initiative to encourage and provide assistance for students to graduate college within four years with less debt. The president continues to build strong relationships with the men and women who serve this country. This includes the establishment of the Whiteman Advantage Program, which brings together personnel from Whiteman Air Force Base and the university to work cooperatively in creating new educational opportunities for military members. The university also developed the Military Tuition Package, which provides savings on an education for military men and women currently serving their country, as well as their spouses and dependents, and veterans. Under his direction, the university developed a new strategic positioning initiative to provide a more articulated understanding of what makes UCM unique and helped guide the institution in establishing its future priorities. In fall 2012, Ambrose launched the new Missouri Innovation Campus, in collaboration with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and private industry, which will allow students to begin college during their junior year of high school and complete a degree in four years with little or no debt. President Ambrose attended Furman University, where he was a four-year letterman and captain of the soccer team. After graduating from Furman with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, he earned two advanced degrees in higher education administration, a master’s from the University of Louisville and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Georgia.

Jerry Hughes Athletics Director Under the leadership of Jerry Hughes, UCM’s athletics program has enjoyed unprecedented success, highlighted by the dual NCAA basketball championships in 1984 by the Mules and Jennies, the 1994 and 2003 NCAA baseball championships, and the 2003 women’s Intercollegiate Bowling Association national title. In 2005, Hughes was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Entering the 2013 fall semester, the Mules and Jennies have won 139 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships, five national championships, had 44 other top four NCAA finishes, and made more than 250 NCAA post-season appearances during Hughes’ tenure. The Central Missouri athletic program also won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association All-Sports Trophy each year from 1998-99 (the year of the award’s inception) until the award was discontinued in 2002-03. UCM finished second in the NACDA Director’s Cup in 2010-11, the best finish in school and MIAA history after finishing third the previous two years. Hughes was named Central Region Athletics Director of the Year for the 1998-99, 2001-02 and 2010-11 seasons as selected by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He is the first three-time winner at any NCAA level--in the history of the Athletics Director of the Year program. Hughes has been Central Missouri’s athletics director since Jan. 25, 1983. Prior to that, Hughes had served as associate athletics director since July of 1981. In 1991-92, he served as the Mules’ interim head basketball coach and guided the team to a 15-13 record. Hughes has been a Division II member of the NCAA Executive Committee and chairman of the Division II Championships Committee. He also served a term as NCAA Vice President for Division II and has been a member of the NCAA Council, making him the only person to twice hold the highest-ranking office available to athletics administrators in NCAA Division II. Other NCAA committees on which he has served are the Membership Structure Committee, Administrative Committee, and Post-Season Football Subcommittee. He has chaired the NCAA Division II Management Council and Membership Growth Project Team and been a member of the NCAA Budget and Finance Committee and NCAA Administrative Review Panel, as well as the NACDA Sears Directors Cup Committee. He has spearheaded fund-raising efforts for major renovations of the Central Missouri football and baseball stadiums, as well as the development of UCM’s South Recreation Complex and Keth Memorial Golf Course Clubhouse. He is the founder of the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, a highly regarded NCAA Division II basketball tournament, which was held each December for 17 years in Las Vegas, Nev. In addition to his service at Central Missouri, Hughes has served as Regional Director of the Show-Me State Games, and on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health.

Hughes has been at Central Missouri since October 1979, when he took a position as business placement director. The following year he became director of student recruitment. In 1981, Hughes was chosen for the new position of associate athletics director. A native of Versailles, Mo., Hughes received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1971 from Central Missouri, with a minor in safety education. He was a three-year letterman on the Mules’ golf team, receiving All-MIAA honors in 1971. He also obtained a master’s degree in secondary school administration, which he received in 1979 from Central Missouri. Following his graduation in 1971, Hughes spent a year of active duty in the Army National Guard. In 1972, he returned to his hometown and took a position as physical education instructor, head golf coach and assistant basketball coach at Morgan County R-2 High School. From 1977-79, he served as the school’s athletics director and assistant principal. He and his wife, Vici, have four children – Greg, Chad, Parker, and Ashley. They have seven grandchildren – Tanner, Rylie, and Dalton from Greg and his wife Catrina; Fallon, Kaiser, and Logan from Chad and his wife Jennafer; and Sofija from Ashley and her husband Matt Ruzich. Vici works for UCM as Director of the Midwest Center for Urban Education and Charter Schools.

It could be said Kathy Anderson’s athletic life has come full circle. She was an All-America student-athlete at the University of Central Missouri, she’s had her number 32 retired in Jennies basketball, and is a member of the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame. Now Anderson helps UCM student-athletes achieve their own goals, as she begins her ninth year at her alma mater. She was elevated to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator in 2011 after serving the previous six years as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator. Anderson had served previously as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services at Northwest Missouri State University. Prior to assuming her role at Northwest, Anderson served a brief stint as admission and eligibility coordinator at the University of Washington. She added those duties in the summer of 2002 to her responsibilities as operations coordinator for men’s basketball for the Huskies. In addition, Anderson was assistant basketball coach in 2000 for the Seattle Storm and in 1998 for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. Her coaching career began in 1980, when she was hired as assistant women’s basketball coach at California State-Fullerton. She served there from 1980-85 before moving on to the University of Washington as assistant basketball coach from 1985-96, and as assistant director of basketball operations from 1996-98. Anderson received a bachelor’s degree from UCM in 1980, graduating cum laude in physical education and mathematics. While wearing the Cardinal & Black, she lettered four years in basketball, three years in softball, and once in track & field. In 1979-80 she was named second-team Academic All-American, and in 1980 she was honored as UCM Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete and Outstanding Senior in Physical Education. With the Jennies belonging to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and playing today what would be considered a Division I schedule, she helped lead the Jennies to an 82-31 record. She also was named to the Jennies Basketball All-Decade Team for 1970-80 and the Jennies Basketball Silver Anniversary Team for 1970-95. Perhaps her most outstanding accomplishment was being a member of the USA Women’s National Basketball program for the three years leading to the 1980 Olympics which the USA boycotted. In 1977, Anderson served as captain of the USA Women’s Junior Basketball team to Taiwan. In 1978 and 1979, she was a member of the USA Women’s Senior Basketball teams that traveled to China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Russia. In 1979, Anderson also was selected as an alternate to Team USA for the Pan-American Games. During the summer of 2010, Anderson was inducted into the inaugural MIAA Hall of Fame class for her outstanding accomplishments at UCM. Along with her brother, UCM head men’s basketball coach Kim Anderson, she was honored by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as one of the 2011 “Filbert Five” honorees. Anderson has also served as past chair for the Division II softball committee and Chair of the Insitutional Representatives for the MIAA. She is currently Chair of the NCAA Division II women’s basketball committee. Anderson earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Seattle Pacific University in 2000.

Shawn Jones

Shawn Jones is UCM’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and his efforts have made the department a recognized leader in NCAA Division II across his many areas of responsibility. Jones has implemented many new initiatives during his tenure and his responsibilities include the oversight of external and revenue generating functions of the department to include the Mule Train athletic annual fund, corporate sponsor program, athletic marketing and promotions, media and public relations, special events, video board operations and broadcasting. He also took over direction of the university-wide licensing program for UCM in 2011. In addition, he serves on the department’s senior leadership team. He was originally hired by his alma mater in 2000 as Manager of Athletic Marketing/

Broadcasting. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Assistant A.D. for Marketing and Broadcasting. Jones spent six years as Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and was elevated to his current position in 2011. As the Voice of UCM Athletics, he serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for Central Missouri Athletics on radio, and as the host and coordinating producer of UCM’s weekly one-hour television show, Central Missouri Sportspage. He Shawn, Hayden, Melissa and Lauren Jones also emcees and coordinates special events in addition to other administrative duties. During his time at UCM, Jones has served on the committees that have brought seven current head coaches and several full-time staff members to campus. A member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Directors, Jones launched and now oversees UCM’s highly successful corporate sponsor program. He has played a major role in the success of UCM’s biggest fund raising event, the Celebrating Central Missouri Athletic Auction. That event has raised over $1.4 million in net profits for UCM Athletics in its 12-year history. UCM’s efforts in promotions have been recognized by the NCAA News, NACMA and the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Initiative. In 2012, UCM was honored as both the NCAA Division II and MIAA Game Environment Award winner for promotional and community engagement efforts surrounding the football home opener. Jones also holds membership in the International Collegiate Licensing Association, nearly doubling licensing royalty revenues for UCM since taking over the program in 2011. 2012 was a big year for his External Relations team. The department launched its first dot com website, UCMAthletics.com, creating a modern web presence and a new revenue generation vehicle. Additionally, new video scoreboards were added to Walton Stadium/Kennedy Field and the Multipurpose Building, providing a high-level fan and student-athlete experience in the venues. The addition of the new boards also allowed Jones and his team the vehicle to secure the largest corporate sponsorships in department history. His team also worked with faculty and students from the Department of Communication & Sociology to launch and coordinate video webcasts of many UCM sporting events through the UCM Media Network. This group, along with staff from KMOS-TV, were awarded the 2012-2013 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award in the Broadcast Category for excellence in advancement of coverage of volleyball. Jones served a four year term on the NCAA Division II Football Committee, as the co-chair of Super Regional Four. He was twice elected to serve as National Chair, serving in that role from Sept. 1, 2009 to Sept. 1, 2011, the longest allowable tenure under NCAA regulations. Jones was one of the youngest chairs in NCAA Division II football history. In January of 2009, Jones served as a featured panelist at the NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C., speaking on the topic of Building Relationships and Telling Stories: Engaging the Local Media. In January of 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia, Jones once again served as a panelist at the NCAA Convention, speaking on the topic of Fans: How to Find and Keep Them. Prior to his time at UCM, Jones worked for ESPN Regional in the University of Kansas Athletics Department. He served on the broadcast team for Jayhawk Baseball with the legendary Tom Hedrick and as the host of the Marian Washington Show on KLWN radio in Lawrence. As an Account Executive for ESPN Regional, he sold sponsorships for KU Athletics on the Jayhawk Radio and Television Networks. Jones also provided radio play-by-play for UMKC women’s basketball during the 1999 season. In 1998, Jones was Business Development Manager for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, where he created new revenue streams for the 20,000 member organization. While a student, the Moberly, Mo., native worked at KOKO Radio in Warrensburg as assistant sports director covering Warrensburg High School and UCM sports. He also worked as a student assistant in the sports information office. Jones holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCM, earning his bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication from UCM in 1997. He also earned his master’s degree in Physical Education/Exercise and Sport Science with specialization in Athletic and Sport Business Administration from UCM. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Warrensburg. Melissa, who holds an MBA from Central Missouri, is the Technology Development Manager in Information Services at UCM. They are the proud parents of an eight-year old daughter, Lauren, and a four-year old son, Hayden. His mother, Carla, rounds out the families strong connection to UCM, working on campus as an Academic Advisor.

Mike Knipper

Mike Knipper is in his third year as a full-time staffer at Central Missouri and his second as Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations. He is in his fifth year overall with the department after serving as a graduate assistant in the UCM media relations department from 2007-09. Knipper is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is in responsible for all publications (media guides, game day programs, camp/fundraising brochures, etc.), press releases, and the UCM athletics website, UCMathletics.com, as well as the statistics and staffing of home athletic events. Interview and media requests also go through Knipper. In the summer of 2012, Knipper spearheaded the redesign of the UCM Athletics website and the move to website host, SIDEARM Sports. The UCM Athletic Media Relations office was honored in the spring of 2013 with the AVCA Grant Burger Division II Central Region SID of the Year Award for their work with the UCM volleyball program. Prior to rejoining UCM, he was the Assistant Sports Information Director at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., where he served as the media contact for the volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball programs. In his two plus years at Washburn, Knipper received six CoSIDA publication awards for his media guides, including three “Best in the Nation” awards. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in communication from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. As a collegiate wrestler, he was a part of four teams that placed in the top 20 at the NCAA-III National Championships, including fourth and fifth place finishes during his sophomore and senior seasons, respectively. The Iowa City, Iowa native earned his master’s degree in Athletic Administration from UCM in the spring of 2009.

Bob Jackson

Bob Jackson has been employed at the University of Central Missouri since 1999, but has been involved with the University’s athletic department since September of 1981. Jackson currently serves as the Mules and Jennies Marketing and Promotions Director. He is also part of the broadcast team on the Central Missouri Sports Radio

Network. In addition, Jackson coordinates the advertising sales for UCM’s football and basketball game programs. He came to Warrensburg in 1981 to serve as sports director at KOKO Radio. There he was the play-by-play voice of Mules football, basketball, and baseball and for Jennies basketball, a position he filled until joining the staff at UCM in 1999. Prior to assuming his role at KOKO, Jackson was sports director at KWOS Radio in Jefferson City from 1976-81, where he provided play-by-play for Lincoln University football and basketball. Jackson’s wife, Sherri, is employed with the Warrensburg School District. They have two daughters, Cassie and Sherri, Bob, Cassie and Jamie Jackson Jamie. Cassie graduated from Central Missouri in 2012 with a degree in corporate communications with a minor in public relations, while Jamie is a sophomore at UCM.

Ron DuBuque became Central Missouri’s Head Athletic Trainer in August of 2010. He has more than 30 years experience at the college and professional ranks, and has spent most of that time in the state of Missouri. DuBuque came to UCM after serving the previous three years as the Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, while also teaching at St. Louis University and doing rehabilitation consulting with the St. Louis Rams of the NFL since the summer of 2009. Prior to that, DuBuque spent a season as an athletic trainer for the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. From 1995-2006, he was an athletic trainer with the St. Louis Rams, and was present for both of their Super Bowl appearances in 2000 and 2002. DuBuque was also the Head Athletic Trainer for the St. Louis Blues of the NHL in the fall of 1994. He also spent 11 years from 1984-1994 at the University of Missouri as the trainer and travel coordinator for the men’s basketball program, working with legendary head coach Norm Stewart. During his time there, he also worked with UCM Head Men’s Basketball Coach Kim Anderson. He was a part of three Big Eight regular season titles, and four Big Eight tournament crowns, as well as several NCAA Tournament berths. During his time at Mizzou, he also served as a sports medicine consultant for the Columbia Orthopedic Group and as a member of the Community Advisory Committee at Columbia Regional Hospital. He is listed as one of the co-authors of the 1985 book, ‘Missouri Power Basketball’. Since 1985, he has been a National Athletic Trainer’s Association Certification Test Examiner as well. DuBuque was at the University of Colorado in 1983 and 1984 as a graduate assistant, and spent a season in 1982 with the Montreal Expos Single-A affiliate in Jamestown, New York. He also interned with the Rams in 1980 and 1981 during training camp. The Webster Groves, Missouri native attended the University of Missouri from 1978-82 and received his bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical education. He earned his master’s in education with an emphasis in human performance from Mizzou in 1987.

Crystal Meeks

Crystal Meeks came to the University of Central Missouri in January of 2008 from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. She also worked for Jasper County Hospital and Renssalaer Central High School while there. Prior to her time there, Meeks was at the University of Arkansas where she earned her masters degree in kinesiology. She worked with the football, men’s basketball, track and field, and gymnastics programs while also helping at Bentonville High School. She has also been involved in several post-season events, including the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament and the SEC and NCAA Track and Field Championships. Meeks earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Ball State (Ind.) University in July of 2004. She also ran cross country and competed for the Cardinals track and field squad from 2000-04. After college, she also served as an EKG technician at Washington Regional hospital in Indiana. The Demotte, Ind. native is a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer.

193 MIAA Titles, 7 National Titles The University of Central Missouri has a long and rich history of excellence in athletics, both on the field of play and in the classroom. Outstanding teams, combined with some of the finest facilities in Division II athletics give UCM’s students, faculty and staff one more aspect of college life to enjoy with pride. Always a contender for conference titles, Central Missouri belongs to the 14-member Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which is recognized nationwide as one of the strongest conferences in all of NCAA Division II. Since 1983, the tenure of Athletic Director Jerry Hughes, UCM has won or shared 139 MIAA championships, more than any other league school. All-time, the Mules have taken home 136 titles, while the Jennies are at 57. Central Missouri has won five national championships since 1980 (men’s and women’s basketball in 1984--the first school in NCAA history to win both titles in the same season--baseball in 1994 and 2003, and women’s bowling in 2003), and seven overall. The Jennies volleyball team has been to the NCAA

Tournament every season for the past 30 years, and the Mules have won 17 MIAA Indoor Track & Field titles in the last 19 years, and 10 of the last 13 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field crowns. The Mules baseball squad has made 20 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including 13 Division II World Series berths in that span. Three UCM teams captured MIAA Championships in 2012-13 and three teams finished in the top 10 in the nation via ranking or place. Jennies Bowling finished in fifth, while Mules Indoor Track was seventh and Jennies Volleyball came in eighth. Individually, UCM had 21 different All-American seasons and performances. They also took home two individual national championships in track and field. Erin Alewine captured the pentathlon (indoor) title, while Brent Vogel won the heptathlon crown (indoor). UCM student-athletes once again excelled in the classroom as they were awarded 375 academic awards from the MIAA, including 33 Academic Excellence Awards for student-athletes having 4.0 GPAs and 37 Scholar-Athlete Awards with student-athletes having at least a 3.5 GPA and earning All-MIAA honors in their respective sports. In addition, 10 UCM student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Region Teams in their respective sports with eight earning Academic All-America honors.

Take a Mule Refresher and Learn What’s So Special about Missouri’s State Animal

Often called mankind’s most successful hybrid, mules are the offspring of crossing a male donkey or jack with a female horse or mare. Since they can’t reproduce, mules have been bred one generation at a time for more than 3,000 years. A strong, resourceful beast of burden, the mule can outwork, outpull, outlive and outsmart a horse of similar size and type. In 1995, the mule became Missouri’s official state animal, but the long-eared creatures have been known as “Missouri Mules” long before then. The term, “Missouri Mules,” was used casually until it became famous at the historic 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. At that exposition a six-mule hitch belonging to W. A. Elgin of Platte County swept all competition, and a mule from a Morgan County farm received the $10,000 Mayor’s Award. Newspaper accounts of this show-ring prowess brought worldwide attention to the state’s mule breeders and helped assure that the largest and finest animals would be known as “Missouri Mules.”

Many people assume that the relationship of mules and jennies is the same as that of siblings, but jennies are female donkeys. So, the relationship of mules and jennies is really the same as nephew/niece and aunt. Jenny is a common name but technically a female donkey is a jennet. Popular with farmers and settlers because of its hardy nature, Missouri Mules pulled pioneer wagons to the Wild West and played a crucial role in moving troops, artillery and supplies in several wars. In fact, many of the mules used in World War I were shipped by train from Warrensburg. The mule’s affiliation with Central Missouri dates back to the early 1920s. When the 1921-22 school year began, school officials decided “Normals” and “Teachers” were no longer appropriate nicknames for UCM’s athletic teams. Therefore, the school’s Athletic Committee established a contest that promised the winner a three-year postgraduate subscription of the school newspaper. More than 80 suggestions were received, but the winning entry was submitted by John Thomason of Chilhowee, class of 1924, who felt at least one Missouri team should be known as “Mules.” Central Missouri’s fifth mascot - Mancow - is the university’s first real Missouri mule. The line-back brown mule comes from Paradise Mules in Belle, Mo. It took several months for farm manager Dave Ewing to find the perfect mule. He was determined to acquire the right mule trained to remain calm around big crowds and loud noises - that game cannon gets loud! Mancow the Mule is the second UCM mule to be tall (14.1 hands), a result of her thoroughbred heritage. The university’s first three mules were Shetland Pony breeds. She’s the second mule to be presented to the university as a gift. Erich “Mancow” Muller, ‘88, made a gift to purchase the new mascot. Abbedale, her immediate predecessor, was donated to the university by 1938 alumnus and well-known mule producer, Sam Smiser from Newhall, Calif. The 10-year-old mare mule represented the university at home football games and other events. UCM agriculture students care for her at Prussing Farm, a few miles east of Warrensburg on Division Road. Following her first appearance at the 2004 Missouri State Fair, Mancow saw her first game action, as Central Missouri hosted MIAA-rival Northwest Missouri State on Sept. 11.

Warrensburg, Missouri is a friendly community of 18,000 people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 13. It is located just 40 miles southeast of suburban Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment options and professional sports franchises. The county seat of Johnson County, Warrensburg is just four hours from St. Louis and three hours from Branson, Mo., with easy access by highway, Amtrak, or Greyhound bus. Other recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast. Warrensburg is a city that emerged from a frontier gathering place more than 150 years ago. In 1833, a blacksmith from Kentucky named Martin Warren chose a well-travelled spot along an Osage Indian Trail to build a cabin and set up his blacksmith shop. His shop served as an informal gathering place for local farmers. Three years after moving to Missouri, Mr. Warren’s shop was named the county seat of the newly created County of Johnson. The township was named Warren’s Burg in honor of the local blacksmith, and in 1855, the township was incorporated and became the City of Warrensburg. It is that same strong midwestern work ethic displayed by its founder, and the same friendly atmosphere shown by his neighbors that may be seen in Warrensburg today. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Warrensburg was considered the Missouri Mule Capital because of the Horse and Mule Barn operated by the Jones Brothers on Railroad Street. Mules from the area won prizes at the State Fair (located just 30 minutes east in Sedalia, Mo.) and at even larger expositions like the one in St. Louis in 1904. The mule barn carried the motto, “Through these portals pass the meanest mules on earth.” Warrensburg is home to many historic sites, including “Blind” Boone Park, the historic Johnson County Courthouse, the Missouri Pacific Train Depot, and many historical churches. It is also the site of the Old Drum Memorial Statue, in honor of Old Drum, the hound shot and killed by his owner’s neighbor in 1869. Old Drum was eulogized

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 15-member conference (beginning in 2012-13) of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, more than 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

Central Missouri Athletic Training The Dr. Ron “Doc” VanDam Athletic Training Facility was dedicated on January 22, 2011. In his 30-year tenure at Central, Doc treated and advised thousands of athletes, was an integral part of 78 MIAA Conference Championships, 41 MIAA Conference Tournament Championships, 26 NCAA Regional Championships and 3 NCAA National Championships as well as leading, teaching and mentoring the athletic training students at Central Missouri. Doc was foundational in setting the standard for success within the Athletics Department and the Physical Education Department at Central Missouri. His leadership was respected and appreciated while he served as the President of the Missouri Athletic Trainers’ Association, and as a member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
