As a youth from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Adam Siehr began tattooing in 1994. He learned the fundamentals and developed his skill in an apprenticeship, then moved to Las Vegas where he continued to learn, grow and gain experience with a celebrity clientele. From the flash of Vegas, Tattoo Adam relocated to O‘ahu in 1999 to build his custom portfolio. He opened his private studio in May of 2004—434 Tattoo. On one of his travels, Tattoo Adam sought out Japanese tattoo icon Horiyoshi III in Yokohama, Japan. Over many trips to learn from this tattoo master, Tattoo Adam was also tattooed by Horiyoshi. Passing on a specific skill set from master to apprentice is an important practice in Japanese tradition. Although diminishing in today’s culture, it’s still alive in some areas. One of these areas is in the practice of tebori, traditional Japanese hand tattooing, that rose in popularity in Japan in the late 18th and early 19th century. Hori or Horishi is an honorific, meaning “trained artist”; shi means “master” or “teacher.” This honorific is traditionally given from the master to his apprentice at the end of the apprenticeship. Tattoo Artist Adam Siehr was recently bestowed with the name of Horiyume, which translates to “Curving Dream,” from Horiyoshi III. This formal name represents the passing of tebori tradition from one generation of artist to another, and holds deep meaning between master and apprentice.

HONOLULU
owntown Honolulu is a rich mix of beautiful historic buildings where ali‘i (members of Hawai‘i’s nobility) once lived and modern-day structures reflect the mid-day sun. Architectural buffs will not be disappointed. Hawai‘i is unique to the nation’s states in many ways, but a visit to downtown

Honolulu best illustrates the state’s unusual place in history. It’s the only one to have once been ruled by its own monarchy. At the cross section of South King Street and Punchbowl, visit Ali‘iolani Judiciary Building with the statue of Kamehameha the Great in front, then cross Punchbowl to Kawaiaha‘o Church and Mission Houses Museum. Across the way is Honolulu Hale, then cross Punchbowl again to ‘Iolani Palace, ‘Iolani Barracks and the Coronation Pavilion within the same block. On Beretania Street, see Washington Place behind the wrought iron fence. ‘Iolani Palace is one of three of Hawai‘i’s royal residences— the only ones in the nation. Architecture buffs will find a treasure trove of jewels in Honolulu’s Capital District of which ‘Iolani Palace is a great example. Three architects were employed in its design, which features double lanai (porches) lined with Corinthian columns. It was the first building in Honolulu to have electricity. After the overthrow of the monarchy, ‘Iolani Palace served as a legislative building for the new government until 1968. The construction of Ali‘iolani

Hale, now the State Judiciary Building, was commissioned by Kamehameha V who died before it was finished. King Kalakaua dedicated the building two years later in 1874. This palace, meant to be a place of grandeur for the monarchy, was the site of its dissolution on January 17, 1893. The churches of downtown Honolulu are destinations in their own right. St. Andrew’s Cathedral, located next to Washington Place, was built by the Anglican Church, using stones that were shipped from England. Many of Hawai‘i’s monarchs worshiped here. Both still function as houses of worship and all are welcome to attend Sunday morning services.

Think pineapples, coconuts, orchids and plenty of spirits! Known as balmy weather thirst quenchers, tropical drinks are a must in Hawai‘i.
Tomas del Amo
Mai Tai (at left) It’s bright like a tropical moon. Bartenders argue on how best to make it—and who invented it. Supposedly Don the Beachcomber used two rums, lime and grapefruit juice, bitters and Cointreau in his concoction, while Trader Vic’s was totally different. However it’s tweaked, the sweet flavor is fruity, juicy and packs a punch! Blue Hawaii (above) Named after the 1961 Hollywood blockbuster starring Elvis Presley, a Blue Hawaii sports an ocean blue thanks to the ingredient Blue Curacao. A combination of vodka, pineapple juice and sweet/sour syrup makes it a pucker-upper and transports you to where the film was made—Kaua‘i.

NAME THAT FISH? Choosing the right fish from the menu is like selecting fine wine—each has its own taste, aroma and texture. People eat
twice as much seafood in Hawai‘i as the U.S. per capita national average. What does that mean to you? Every restaurant has fresh fish on the menu with a not-so-familiar Hawaiian name. See if you can name any of the favorites pictured. Answers below.

nvesting in a vacation property in Hawai‘i can be fun and profitable depending on your goals, usage and timing. If you plan to make Hawai‘i a regular destination for your family, a corporate incentive for your employees, or even as a second home, one possible option might be a condo-hotel. Q: “What’s the difference between a regular condo and a condo-hotel?” A: A condo-hotel is generally a wholly owned property you can purchase that is zoned for transient accommodations. This means

it can be utilized for daily, weekly, or longer-term rentals. Regular condominiums often have restrictions that disallow short-term rentals. Condohotel units are also operated under the Innkeeper Laws, as opposed to the Landlord Tenant Code, which allows for easier access for management. They are also usually sold fully furnished and often have onsite management as an option for owners to use to manage their unit (i.e. Trump, Outrigger, Ritz-Carlton, Aqua). Most guests of these properties do not even

have in-room laundry and all are taxed at the commercial property tax rate (higher than the residential rate). Financing can also be more difficult. So do your homework and consult with an expert when deciding if a condo hotel is the right purchase for you.

realize the hotel room they are in is actually owned by an individual. This allows for hassle-free ownership, daily upkeep and, hopefully, a reasonable return on investment. Most condo hotels, however, do not include parking, some do not

ON THE ROAD
t
Take the Wheel
There’s something to be said for exploring the island via a guided tour. It’s comfortable, worry free, plus you’ll invariably learn tidbits about Hawai‘i’s history and culture through a narration. But if you prefer taking your vacation into your own hands, and believe that wrong turns are just another opportunity for adventure, then you’ll want to look into a vehicle rental. The choices abound so do your research. You can also opt to “Cruise Paradise in Style” with a motorcycle, bicycle, moped or Baby T-Rex rental from Paradise Cruisers. Imagine cruising around the island under a warm tropical sun on a solid V-Twin HarleyDavidson—it doesn’t get much cooler than that. Or how about zipping along on a 150cc or 600cc motorcycle. Bicycles and mopeds are perfect for shorter distances.

Atlantis Submarines takes you down to depths of 100 feet without getting wet! Ride out to the Atlantis dive site ensconced in an air-conditioned, Coast Guard-approved, state-of-the-art submarine. Peer through large view ports to see colorful marine life, green turtles, sharks, eels and stingrays. Gold Certified by the Hawai‘i Ecotourism Assoc., Atlantis has recycled sunken ships and other objects to create undersea “homes for fish” and contributed to the growth of marine life. Transportation is included from select Waikiki Hotels. Dolphin Star—a member of Hawai‘i’s Dolphin Smart program—takes you to see wild dolphins off the sunny Wai‘anae Coast. Ride aboard the eco-friendly catamaran, a 65-foot, twodeck power vessel designed with dolphin watching in mind. Spy spinner, bottlenose and spotted dolphins; sighting guaranteed or get a raincheck. Ask about charter cruises for special occasions. Dolphin Excursions takes passengers on a marine safari aboard the fast and maneuverable Nai‘a 1 to see dolphins. If they’re awake and playful, an in-water “drop” allows guests to get wet with the dolphins and experience the sights and sounds of dolphin interaction from an underwater perspective. Snorkeling and safety gear is provided, including prescription masks. Afterwards, enjoy a sit-down meal at Spinners Café. Transport provided between Waikiki and Ko Olina hotels.
Dive in for an intimate ocean adventure
Scuba diving is a peaceful, intimate experience with the underwater world. Big Kahuna Watersports Hawaii offers a variety of dives that showcase healthy coral reefs and an array of marine life that includes vibrant fish, turtles, eels and perhaps an endangered monk seal. Dive down 40, 55, 80 or 135 feet.
