The tradition of Obon season lies in the Buddhist practice of welcoming back the spirits of ancestors generally from August 13-16. A traditional lantern is set up to light the way and food is prepared for ancestors’ arrival and stay. Although it’s a Buddhist tradition, you don’t need to be a Buddhist to participate in the lively community spirit of a bon dance generally held at local Buddhist temples. Enjoy local food and be sure to try your hand at the bon dance! but a visit to downtown Honolulu best illustrates the state’s unusual place in history. It’s the only one to have once been ruled by its own monarchy. At the cross section of South King Street and Punchbowl, visit Ali‘iolani Judiciary Building with the statue of Kamehameha the Great in front, then cross Punchbowl to Kawaiaha‘o Church and Mission Houses Museum. Across the way is Honolulu Hale, then cross Punchbowl again to ‘Iolani Palace, ‘Iolani Barracks and the Coronation Pavilion within the same block. On Beretania Street, see Washington Place behind the wrought iron fence. ‘Iolani Palace is one of three of Hawai‘i’s royal residences— the only ones in the nation. Architecture buffs will find a treasure trove of jewels in Honolulu’s Capital District of which ‘Iolani Palace is a great example. Three architects were employed in its design, which features double lanai (porches) lined with Corinthian columns. It was the first building in Honolulu to have electricity. commissioned by Kamehameha V who died before it was finished. King Kalakaua dedicated the building two years later in 1874. This palace, meant to be a place of grandeur for the monarchy, was the site of its dissolution on January 17, 1893. The churches of downtown Honolulu are destinations in their own right. Kawaiaha‘o Church, on the corner of Punchbowl and S. King Streets, was built by the first missionaries to settle in Honolulu. Its walls are made of coral rock and it is the burial site of King William Lunalilo and his parents. St. Andrew’s Cathedral, located next to Washington Place, was built by the Anglican Church, using stones that were shipped from England. Many of Hawai‘i’s monarchs worshiped here. Both still function as houses of worship and all are welcome to attend Sunday morning services.

Hawai‘i vacation just isn’t complete without experiencing a lu‘au. Just remember that casual attire is adequate, alohawear is the dress of choice, and elastic waistbands are recommended! Ali‘i Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center— Located away from the bustle of Waikiki, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a gem on O‘ahu’s northeastern shore. It’s well worth the drive as you take in the chiseled Ko‘olau mountain range, white sand beaches and neighborhoods along the way. Ali‘i Luau, winner of the coveted Kahili Award for the island’s most authentic lu‘au, affords visitors the opportunity to tour eight villages and exhibits. After being greeted with a Hawaiian shell lei, you’ll see the Royal Court of Polynesia, the unearthing of the roasted pig— quite the crowd pleaser!—as well as enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet, then head off on a musical journey to Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand and Hawai‘i in “Dances of the Pacific.” The highlight is a Samoan fireknife dance called the “Tooth of Death.”

74 dining / know your fish

fresh fish anyone?

C

hoosing the right fish from the menu is like selecting fine wine—each has its own taste, aroma and texture. People eat twice as much seafood in Hawai‘i as the U.S. per capita national average. What does that mean to you? Every restaurant has fresh fish on the menu with a not-so-familiar Hawaiian name. Use this guide to find the fish that has the qualities you enjoy the most.

Onaga

Long-Tail Red Snapper: Soft and moist with a delicate flavor, onaga can be baked, steamed or sauteed.

Opah

Moonfish: Popular with chefs, opah has a juicy, rich flavor with a roast pork-like aroma. Texture is very tender.

Shutome

Opakapaka

Pink Snapper: This delicately flavored fish has a tender texture perfectly suited for baking, poaching and sauteing.

Swordfish: This fish is tasty without any seasoning. It has a delicate, slightly fruity flavor and a subtle aroma. Texture is succulent and meaty.

More fish choices Ahi Tuna, Yellowfin/Bigeye Tuna

Mahimahi, Dolphin Fish

Considered one of Hawai‘i’s most popular choices, ahi is served raw as sliced sashimi or cooked rare.

Mahimahi is for the finicky fish eater. It has a mellow, lemony, sweet-rich flavor with a silky, yet flaky, tender texture.

Ono, Wahoo

Eat fresh fish

A distinctive, yet delicate, tangy-citrus flavor simillar to poultry or veal. Chewy and firm texture.

Enjoy fresh cuts of isle fish in sushi rolls, fresh sashimi, in a poke dish, as ceviche or in a seafood chowder. Ono! Delicious!

The two types of sea turtles observed close to shore most often are the green sea turtle and hawksbill sea turtle. It’s incredible to see these creatures up close, but keep in mind that when they come on shore, they are resting. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) urges people to let them rest undisturbed, keeping a six- to 10-foot buffer between you and the turtle. Federal and state wildlife laws differ in some respect, however, feeding or touching turtles in any way is considered a disturbance, and is therefore illegal. Info: hawaii.gov/dlnr.

Your ocean adventure awaits

Under the glare of the island sun, the Pacific’s shimmering surface beckons to beachgoers just as a frothy tropical drink tempts a sip. Boasting miles of coastline and award-winning beaches, O‘ahu offers excellent opportunities for an array of ocean activities.

Turn up the fun a notch

Feel the need for speed? Want thrilling ocean action? Get wet via a host of hurry-scurry activities that will send you soaring, skiing, sailing, surfing and more—it’s fast and furious fun that could even find you flying! H2O Sports lets you fly like a superhero—think Marvel’s Iron Man! H2O Sports is the only place in Hawai‘i where you can do just that via the water-propelled Jetlev Jet Pack. A certified flight instructor gets you up in the air—up to 30 feet high. Wow! Now that’s a vacation memory and photo op! Other activities include parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, surf lessons, plus banana boat and bumper boat rides. Snorkel pristine Hanauma Bay too. Hawaii Water Sports Center has a full lineup of ocean activities available in one place: bumper tube or banana boat rides, jet skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, waterskiing, snorkeling, surfing or scuba diving. Take a surfing lesson at an exclusive surf spot where you can have your own private waves! Carve up the water and ride the wake on a wakeboarding activity behind the luxury Nautiques complete with air towers. Ask about the “3 Ride Special” for savings. At Fly Hi Oahu, it’s all about escaping gravity and walking in air—and it’s all done atop a flyboard. The pros can teach people of all shapes, sizes and athletic ability to glide through the air like a superhero, or at least make you feel like you’re on a magic carpet. You’ll be up in the air and flying before you know it! Koko Head Thriller is a new activity by the folks at Hawaii Water Sport Center that zips you across the water aboard its new High Tech Sea Blade 30. It’s specially designed for Hawai‘i’s waters to reduce the slamming, and keep the vessel “above” the water. The wild and beautiful Ka Iwi coastline is your playground with stops at caves, blowholes and Halona Cove. Get ready, hold on and prepare to get wet!

Spy spinner, bottlenose and spotted dolphins against the stunning backdrop of the Wai‘anae Mountain range; sighting guaranteed or get a raincheck to cruise again. Ask about charter cruises for special occasions. Dolphin Excursions takes passengers on a marine safari to see dolphins aboard the fast and maneuverable Nai‘a 1. If dolphins are awake and playful, an in-water “drop” allows guests to get wet with the dolphins and experience the sights and sounds of dolphin interaction from an underwater perspective.

Snorkel at Hanauma Bay

Dive in for an intimate ocean adventure

The deep blue is a world all its own. Aside from your own breathing, you won’t hear a sound. Scuba diving is a peaceful, intimate experience with the underwater world and Hawai‘i outfitters can suit you up, get you to dive sites and teach you how to enjoy this relaxing sport. Big Kahuna Watersports Hawaii offers a variety of dives that showcase healthy coral reefs and an array of marine life that includes vibrant fish, turtles, eels and perhaps an endangered monk seal. Dive down 40, 55, 80 or 135 feet. Small groups cater to both beginners and certified divers while ensuring personal attention. Ask about certified classes.

A snorkeler’s paradise

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (Map G:S10), the state’s first designated Marine Life Conservation District, is home to abundant marine life in all colors. The scenic bay is a remnant of the island’s volcanism and is edged by a 2,000-foot, crescentshaped beach that’s protected by an offshore reef teeming with tropical fish. Conditions here are ideal for novice snorkelers and the park has an informational video and short, walk-thru exhibit introducing its marine life. See schools of vibrant butterfly fish; black-striped manini, or convict tang; the aptly named trumpetfish; pastel-colored surgeonfish; and multi-colored parrotfish. Restrooms, showers are available bayside. Open 6 a.m.-7 p.m. daily; closed on Tuesdays. Fees: $1 per vehicle, $7.50/person, 808-396-4229. Tip: Go early to avoid long lines and a full lot.

Gear up & H2O go!

Snorkel Bob’s rents and sells its own brand of gear: Seamo Betta and Li‘l Mo Betta RX masks; Bigfoots (15-17) and Moflex fins; Ultima Bubba dry snorkel; plus Mofl02 for fresh air with every breath. Bob’s 250-page fish photo book, Every Fish Tells a Story, is $7.50 with snorkel gear for the week (reg. $28). Free 24-hour interisland gear return. Snorkel Bob’s also offers bookings on a variety of land, sea and air activities. Book two seats on boats, zipline, whirlybird or lu‘au adventures and get a free turtle beach bag or boogie board for the week. THIS WEEK OAHU
