a day of loss On the quiet morning of December 7, 1941, 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet sat in the calm waters of Pearl Harbor. Seven of nine battleships were tied up along Battleship Row and naval aircraft were lined up at various air stations. At 7:55 a.m. the first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived, and at approximately 8:10 a.m., the USS Arizona exploded. It would be the first of many explosions around the island that morning.
pearl harbor historic sites The USS Arizona Memorial is one of four memorable sites, collectively known as the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. Pearl Harbor is a historic location with four distinct destinations, each with its own story to tell. They include the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum, Battleship Missouri and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. Check in for all destinations is at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For reservations, visit pearlharborhistoricsites.org or call 1-877-444-6777. No matter where you go or who you meet, you may notice the extra special friendliness of Hawai‘i’s people—that’s the aloha spirit. It’s the same spirit that permeates all our local events. An arts and crafts fair, hula performance, carnival, theatrical show, sports event, rodeo, cultural festival, food and wine event, live concert, surf contest—no matter what the event is, you’ll find it done local style—all with the warmth of the islands. Join the fun and take the spirit of aloha with you wherever you go.
more than just shopping Many of Hawai‘i’s shopping centers offer weekly cultural performances and fun activities. Enjoy keiki hula halau (children’s hula group); cultural demos such as lei making, or learning to play the ‘ukulele; musical performances of all kinds; and even farmers markets that sell locally grown products and handmade gifts.

O‘ahu’s large family attractions take learning out of the classroom and into real life. At the Polynesian Cultural Center, visit seven different villages and get to know a bit about each Polynesian culture while participating in hands-on activities. Visit Pearl Harbor Historic Sites for an in-depth experience of December 7, 1941, and learn how the U.S. responded to this tragedy. Kualoa gets you out onto the saddle, ATV or bus to explore an area that ancient Hawaiians considered a sacred place. As for Wet’n’Wild Hawaii, well, it’s just plain fun!
enjoy the sunny outdoors Hawai‘i’s nearly perfect, year-round weather makes it possible for all visitors to enjoy outdoor activities. Go hiking in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon. We love our tradewinds that keep the vog or volcanic haze—courtesy of Kilauea on the Big Island—at bay. However, when winds blow in from the south, there is an upside to the added humidity—gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. On those days, just sit back on the beach and drink it all in. Bring the camera too!

A Hawai‘i vacation just isn’t complete without experiencing a lu‘au. Whether you’re a “novice” or returning guest, you’ll never tire of the aloha shared by all, the spirited performances and tables laden with delicious Hawaiian fare. Step off the bus and you’re transported into the Hawai‘i of yesteryear. The rush of Waikiki is beyond sight and sound, and all you hear are warm greetings of “Aloha!” set against the backdrop of a setting sun. Even if you’ve come solo or as a couple, you’re all now part of an extended family that includes fellow guests. The various elements that make up a lu‘au are basically the same—the uncovering of the kalua pig from the ‘imu (underground oven), perhaps some cultural demonstrations, a bounty of food and Polynesian entertainment that includes a fireknife dancer. However, each lu‘au has its own unique flair that sets it apart from the rest. You’ll have to experience them all to know which is your favorite—that’s all part of the fun! Just remember that casual attire is adequate, alohawear is the dress of choice, and elastic waistbands are recommended!

The calm waters surrounding the village at Paradise Cove Luau give no indication of the fun and hilarity that ensues each night at this secluded “village.” Visitors are greeted by friendly escorts, musicians and frothy sweet mai tais. After sipping the delicious beverage, pose for pictures with a beautiful wahine (woman) or handsome kane (man) dressed in pareo (a sarong-style wrap). Meander through the Paradise Cove village and learn Hawaiian games such as ‘ulumaika and moa pa‘akea. You can also try your hand at Hawaiian crafts such as making a lei, and even get a temporary tattoo styled after traditional polynesian designs. Before the lu‘au itself begins, several group activities are available for participation. Learn how to wear a pareo— there really is an art to creating different looks. Did you know that men can wear them as swim trunks? Another highlight is the hukilau, which is a demonstration of how the villagers pull the day’s bounty from the sea. Right before dinner, guests witness the ceremonial unearthing of the pig that

The meal also includes other lu‘au fare such as lomilomi salmon, mahimahi and haupia (a coconut dessert). Throughout the show, guests are entertained with dances of Polynesia. The great thing about it is that you learn about each dance and its origin. Volunteers are even brought on stage to try out their own hula hips. An experience at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) in La‘ie is an immersion into the exotic cultures of Polynesia. It’s the one location in the state that closely depicts the traditions of Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga. - breath of life” “ha: Everyday, thousands of visitors learn what lies at the heart of these cultures through demonstrations, exhibits and hands-on activities at each respective village. This year, PCC celebrates 50 years of preserving and perpetuating these cultures. Visitors can anticipate either an annual cultural festival or special event each month leading up to a week of festivities, September 1-8. The actual canoe tour 50th anniversary date is October 12. Join the celebration and look for special promotions in the coming months. PCC’s roots began in 1948 when members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) started a hukilau as a fundraising event. Students aotearoa from Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i, then known as the Church College of Hawai‘i, learned Polynesian dances from the community, who pitched in to teach the students each culture’s distinctive dance moves. “Polynesian Panorama,” samoa tahiti a production of authentic South Pacific island songs and dances, was born. In 1962, more than 100 labor building missionaries volunteered to build PCC’s original 39 structures on a 16-acre site. Skilled artisans and materials from the hawai‘i South Pacific were brought in to ensure authenticity. On October 12, 1963, PCC opened to the public. Admission was just $1.50 for adults, children were 75 cents. See the renovated Hukilau Theater offering a high caliber, interactive theater experience. tonga An onscreen film will immerse audiences on a journey unlike any other. The Polynesian Cultural Center continues to evolve. More importantly, the light of aloha whether from a cultural or spiritual source, continues to burn within every individual. Combined with the spirit of collaboration and unity, all merge to create a consummate experience for every guest. ali‘i lu‘au

North Shore
The pace on this side of the island is slow and relaxed during the long days of summer. Big waves aren’t the norm unless there’s a strong storm brewing across the Pacific, so you’ll likely find conditions more suitable for snorkelers, scuba divers and swimmers. But always check with lifeguards on ocean currents and heed signs. Looking for a bite to eat or some shops to browse? Leisurely explore Hale‘iwa with its cool surf shops and clothing boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, eateries and popular sweet shops. If you’re into art, check out the Hale‘iwa Art Walk, 5-9 p.m. every last Saturday of the month. Get to know the folks behind local shops, galleries, eateries and restaurants and enjoy entertainment, artists and sidewalk sales. Visit the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, 808-637-4558, GoNorthShore.org.
