THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team (#13-AP, #14USA Today) will play nationally-ranked Florida (#15-AP, #13-USA Today) in a non-conference clash at Gampel Pavilion. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and be televised by ESPN2. The Huskies, 7-0, are coming off a 76-66 victory over Loyola (Md.) last Tuesday, their seventh win in 19 days to start the season. UConn is led by senior guard Shabazz Napier in scoring (15.0), rebounding (7.7), and assists (6.1). Junior forward DeAndre Daniels (13.4) and junior guard Ryan Boatright (11.7) are also averaging double figures. Florida, 6-1, is coming off a 67-66 win over Florida State on Friday, its fifth straight victory. Senior forward Casey Prather (19.1) leads the Gators in scoring.

TOURNAMENT TITLE: UConn captured its 19th in-season tournament championship on Nov. 22 at Madison Square Garden when it topped Indiana, 58-57, to win the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. Senior guard Shabazz Napier, who scored 27 points against Indiana, was named the tourney MVP. The game featured 13 lead changes and eight ties. The Nov. 22 win followed a narrow 72-70 UConn win over Boston College in the Nov. 21 semifinals as junior DeAndre Daniels scored 23 points. It marked UConn’s 19th in-season tournament title overall, and its fifth in the past AMERICAN PLAYER OF WEEK: After being named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the first two weeks of the season, UConn senior Shabazz Napier was named the league’s Player of the Week on Nov. 25. Napier scored 47 points, had 9 rebounds, and handed out 5 assists in wins over Boston College and Indiana in Madison Square Garden in the 2K

nine seasons --- the 2005 and 2010 Maui Classic, the 2006 Hispanic College Fund Classic, the 2008 Paradise Jam, and the 2013 2K Sports Classic. The other tournament wins include the 1956 Orange Bowl Tournament, and UConn Classic/Conn. Mutual Classic wins in 1966, 1974, 1975, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992. It was also UConn’s ninth tournament championship won at Madison Square Garden. UConn captured the 1988 NIT at MSG, as well as Big East Conference Championships in 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2011. Sports Classic. In the win over Indiana, seven of Napier’s 10 field goals either tied the game or put UConn ahead. Napier is averaging 15.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, all team highs. UCONN HUSKIES IN THE NBA At the start of the 2013-14 NBA season, UConn ranked among the top seven college programs in the country in current number of NBA players. Kentucky tops the list with 21 players in the NBA, followed by North Carolina (16), Duke (15), Kansas (14), UCLA (13), and UConn and Florida with 12 each. The Huskies will tie UCLA should 14-year NBA veteran Richard Hamilton, a free agent, signs with a team as is expected. The 12 former Huskies are with eight different NBA franchises, and total a combined 88 seasons of NBA experience. grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Huskies to a 76-66 win over Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 26 at the XL Center. It was Daniels’ third 20-plus game of the season. Junior Ryan Boatright had a solid all-around game with 13 points, a career-high 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Grad student Lasan Kromah (12) and senior Niels Giffey (11) also scored in double figures. The Huskies had 11 blocked shots against the Greyhounds. DANIELS FOR 24: Junior DeAndre Daniels scored 24 points and senior Shabazz Napier recorded a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) as UConn defeated Boston University, 77-60, in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic at Gampel Pavilion on Nov. 17. Junior Ryan Boatright was also in double figures with 16 points. The Huskies let a 20-point first-half lead slip away and trailed by one, 43-42, with 17:31 left, but after the game was tied at 46, UConn regained control with an 18-6 explosion and recorded its fourth victory of the season. DOUBLE TIME: The Huskies put six players in double figures as they ran away from Detroit, 101-55, in the first game of the 2K Sports Classic on Nov. 14. It was the first time the Huskies scored 100 points since they defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga, 103-47, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. For the second consecutive game, sophomore Omar Calhoun led UConn in scoring, this time with 17 points, and for the second straight game senior Niels Giffey tied his career high with 15 points, all in the first half. Junior Ryan Boatright (12), junior DeAndre Daniels (11) and seniors Shabazz Napier (10) and Tyler Olander (10) were the other Huskies in double figures. TRIPLE THREAT: Senior Shabazz Napier added to the UConn record book on Nov. 11 when he became the only UConn player to ever record a second triple double in his career, scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and handing out 10 assists to lead the Huskies past Yale, 80-62. Napier’s previous triple double came during his sophomore season, on Nov. 20, 2011, when he had 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists against Coppin State. Napier owns two of the 10 triple doubles in UConn history. Also helping the Huskies defeat Yale was sophomore Omar Calhoun, who scored a game-high 18 points, senior Niels Giffey, who tallied 15 on 5-of-6 three-pointers, and junior Ryan Boatright, who poured in 14 points, as the Huskies went to 2-0 on the season. STATE OF THE ART: UConn’s 80-62 win over Yale on Nov. 11 was the 68th straight win for the Huskies over an opponent from Connecticut. UConn’s last loss to an in-state foe came against Hartford, 49-48, on Dec. 29, 1986. Since that game, the Huskies are 17-0 vs. Fairfield, 13-0 vs. Hartford, 13-0 vs. Yale, 10-0 vs. Quinnipiac, 9-0 vs. Central Connecticut, 5-0 vs. Sacred Heart, and 1-0 vs. Southern Connecticut. The Huskies do not play any more Connecticut teams during this regular season.

THRILLING START: UConn’s 2013-14 season got off to a thrilling start on Nov. 8 with a 78-77 victory over Maryland before 12,687 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Huskies led from start to finish, but watched their 17-point lead melt to two before senior Tyler Olander canned a threepointer with 1:58 left. Maryland came within one, but three straight defensive stops clinched the win for UConn. Senior Shabazz Napier led the Huskies in points (18), rebounds (7), and assists (7), while senior Niels Giffey had 13 points and sophomore Omar Calhoun added 10. The Huskies shot 51.7 percent for the game, handed out 16 assists and had 10 steals. TOP 25: UConn is ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 and No. 14 in the USA Today Top 25 in the latest polls, the highest the Huskies have been ranked since the AP poll of Jan. 16, 2012, when they were also ranked No. 13. It is the fourth straight week that Huskies are ranked in the polls. The first week was UConn’s first appearance in the Top 25 since the Huskies were ranked No. 21 on the poll of Nov. 19, 2012. Six of UConn’s 2013-14 opponents also appear in the AP Top 25 or ‘Others receiving votes.’ NATIONAL LEADERS: According to ESPN. com, the Huskies rank among the NCAA leaders in a few categories. As of Monday, Nov. 25, senior Shabazz Napier ranked No. 14 in total assists with 36 and 26th in assists per game at 7.8. Senior Niels Giffey was fifth in three-point shooting percentage at .700 (12-20) and Napier was 19th in the same category (.625). Freshman Amida Brimah was tied for 10th in total blocks with 21 and was 23th in blocks per game at 3.5. As a team, the Huskies were 20th in 3-point field goal percentage at .450 and 26th in three-pointers made with 49. UConn ranked 26th in blocks per game at 6.7. BLOCK PARTY: Although it is early in the season, UConn is showing signs of returning to the elite group of the top shot-blocking teams in the nation, mainly due to freshman center Amida Brimah. NAPIER ON WATCH LISTS: UConn senior guard Shabazz Napier has been named to the preseason watch list of candidates for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award as well as to the list of the final 30 candidates for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award, the list of 15 candidates for the 201314 Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Preseason Top 50 for the John R. Wooden Award, and the Top 50 for the Naismith Trophy. The Cousy Award watch list includes 45 of the top point guards in the nation. That list will be narrowed to 20 in early February and then to a final five by early March and the winner will be announced on Championship Monday in Dallas. UConn’s Kemba Walker won the Cousy Award in 2010-11. The Senior CLASS Award, which combines on and off the court achievements, will be narrowed to a list of 10 finalists. The winner will come from a vote by the public and will be announced during the Final Four. The Robertson Trophy, awarded to the Player of the Year, will be announced the week following the Final Four. The Wooden Award, presented to the top collegiate player by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, will cut its list to 20 at midseason and the award will be presented the weekend of April 11-12. The Naismith Trophy is awarded at the end of the season by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the Player of the Year. In 30 games last season, the most points the Huskies got from their bench players was 25, against Wake Forest on Nov. 16, 2012. UConn only reached 20 points from its reserves in one other game last year, when the bench scored 20 against Villanova on Feb. 16, 2013. In this season’s first seven games, the top scorer off the bench is senior Niels Giffey, averaging 9.7 ppg. Grad student Lasan Kromah is averaging 5.6 ppg, while freshman Amidah Brimah is averaging 3.3 ppg and senior Tyler Olander is averaing 3.1 ppg. ALL-TIME LISTS: With 4 points against Loyola, UConn senior Shabazz Napier now has 1,344 career points, and has moved up to No. 23 on the Huskies’ all-time scoring list. No. 22 on the list is Toby Kimball with 1,361 points. Napier also had 7 assists against Loyola, upping his career total to 494 assists, No. 8 in that category. Perennially two of the top college basketball programs in the country, it is surprising that UConn and Florida have only met once on the court -- a memorable 69-60 Florida victory in overtime in the 1994 NCAA East Regional semifinals in Miami Arena. Of course, Florida coach Billy Donovan is quite familiar with the Huskies from his college playing career at Providence. He played in seven games against UConn and went 5-2. The 2013-14 edition of the Gators, currently ranked #15AP, #13-USA Today, is coming off three straight NCAA Elite Eight appearances and has won six of its first seven games, including the last five. Florida has plenty of experience

in its starting lineup, which includes four seniors. Forward Casey Prather (19.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg) is the leading scorer for the Gators, while guard Scottie Wilbekin (9.5 ppg, 7.5 apg) is the floor general. Center Patric Young (9.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and forward Will Yeguete (5.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg) are the other two seniors in the starting unit, which is completed by sophomore sharpshooter Michael Frazier (14.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg), the Gatorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; top three-point threat (22-41, .537). Sophomore forward Dorian Finney-Smith comes off the bench to scoring in double figures (11.8) and lead Florida in rebounding (8.6). Florida is 1-1 on the road this season.

ing the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regularseason championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. UConn coach Kevin Ollie accepts the Ben Jobe Award from Jobe, the former Southern University coach. 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas Eve,” said Ollie. “What a Christmas present that was.” Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach. Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be

all about, and when you say that, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy. Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.” Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
