Connecticut ’89, ’93 20th Season

In his 15th season as the Director of Tennis at the University of Connecticut, Glenn Marshall enters his 20th season working with the tennis programs overall. He has served as the men’s tennis team head coach since the 1992 season and took the helm of both the men’s and women’s programs in 1997.

Throughout his tenure, the women’s tennis team has continued to rise within the BIG EAST Conference. Last season, he led the team to its fourth consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Marshall continues to look to guide the team back to a .500 record as he did in 2006-07 when UConn finished the year with an 11-11 record and a seventh-place finish at the conference tournament.

Men’s tennis concluded the year last season 5-8, while picking up impressive wins over Boston University (6-1) and Villanova (4-3). The squad finished the 2008-09 season above .500, with an 8-7 record, for the first time since the 2000-01 (13-8) and reached the BIG EAST Tournament as well.

Marshall was elected the president of the BIG EAST Tennis Coaches Association by his peers in 2004. In this position, he represents the interests of all of the BIG EAST tennis programs and facilitates the development of new conference rules and all the details pertaining to the conference championships.

In the 2001 fall season, Marshall’s men’s and women’s tennis teams combined for a 27-14 record, for a .659 winning-percentage, the highest for the women’s program since he took over in the 1997-98 season. The women’s tennis team captured the New England Championships that season. Individually, UConn took championships in five of the six singles brackets and two of the three doubles brackets at the New England Championships.

Prior to that, Marshall led the men’s tennis team to a 20-5 season in 1999-2000. Twenty wins set a single-season record for total wins while the Huskies capped off the season with a seventh place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. That year, UConn earned notable wins against Maryland, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Providence.

Marshall has guided the men’s tennis team to four championships, including in his first year as head coach. In the spring of 1993, he led the Huskies to the New England Championship with men’s tennis capturing the ECAC Championship title that fall (1993). UConn defended each crown the following season, winning the New England Championship and the ECAC titles the following spring and fall of 1994.

Off the court, Marshall has assisted in the research and development of tennis racquets for professional players at Bosworth International in Boca Raton, Fla. Marshall serves as the Director of Tennis at the Madison Beach Club during the summer months. He and the staff at Madison instruct over 130 juniors and run an extensive adult program that includes USTA league play and lessons.

He attended Keene State College in New Hampshire for a year prior to transferring to the University of Connecticut in the fall of 1986. He was a threeyear letterwinner with the men’s tennis program at UConn, graduating in 1989 with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in music. Marshall was the top singles and doubles player for the Huskies and was voted the team captain for the 1988-89 season. He completed his master’s degree in sport management in 1993.

Marshall resides in his hometown of Glastonbury, Conn., with his wife, Carolyn, and their two children, Carter (16) and Christine (14).

• Earned his 100th career women’s tennis victory when the Huskies defeated Villanova, 6-1 on April 6, 2008.

• Led the women’s team to a .500 finish in 2006-07 for the first time in four years and its highest finish at the BIG EAST Championship (seventh) with the program under his direction.

• Helped the Huskies to an overall record of 27-14 in 2001-02 and the highest combined winning percentage (.659) in his tenure.

• Led UConn men’s team to a single-season school record 20-5 (.800) year in 1999-2000.

• Guided the Husky men to back-to-back New England Championships and ECAC Championships in 1993 and 1994.

• Appointed Director of Tennis in 1997. Recorded his 200th coaching victory, men’s and women’s combined, in the 2004-05 season.

• Led the men to a second place finish in the ECAC Championship in 1997 and 1998.

• Aided the men’s tennis team to two-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament berths in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

• Helped the women’s tennis team reach the BIG EAST Tournament for the past three-consecutive seasons.

Daniel Gal Assistant Coach

Bloomsburg ’08 Second Season

Dan Gal begins his second year at Connecticut in 2011-12 as an assistant coach with the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa, Gal was a standout at Bloomsburg University. He was a team captain for three years and played No. 1 singles and doubles his last three years.

During his time at Bloomsburg, he won the PSAC singles, doubles and team titles. He was a two-time PSAC men’s tennis Athlete of the Year, two-time PSAC Top-Ten Award recipient and an ITA Scholar Athlete. In 2008, he was awarded the ITA/DII Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. This award, which dates back to 1984, is given to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men’s and women’s players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, humanitarian and tennis achievements.

Prior to his arrival at Connecticut, Gal taught tennis at a local club in Pittsburgh, Pa, where he taught nationally-ranked juniors and traveled all over the country to national tournaments.

Gal received a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Bloomsburg in 2008. He currently resides in Vernon, Conn.

Monica Purice Assistant Coach

Oklahoma ’98 First Season

Monica Purice begins her first season on the UConn tennis staff as an assistant in 2011-12.

Purice comes to Connecticut after three seasons as the assistant coach of the men’s and women’s programs at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. As an assistant at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), Purice led the women’s team to the 2010 and 2011 Summit League regular season and tournament titles. The women’s squad also captured the 2009 regular season championship.

An experienced collegiate player, Purice graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in social science and organization studies in 2008 and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a senior. She excelled at Oklahoma, playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles with the Sooners.

Purice has also coached at several youth and adult clubs, most recently serving at the Stamford Yacht Club in Stamford, Conn. She previously served as the Tennis Instructor at Lifetime Sports Academy in Fort Wayne, Ind. and at The Bridges Family Resort and Tennis Club. At the youth and amateur level, Purice competed and coached in her native Romania and was ranked in the top-5 in 2003-04.

The University of Connecticut Tennis Courts were dedicated in August 2005 and feature four practice courts and six for competition.

Spring Preview UConn opens the spring season with a road trip to West Point, N.Y. to face Stony Brook and Army. They will then travel to Massachusetts on February 22nd to play Boston University. Right before the Huskies leave for their spring break trip, they will face off with Colgate on March 9th in Albany, NY. They will then travel to San Diego, Calif. for the annual Spring Break trip. Connecticut will play matches against Point Loma, Imperial Valley College and UC-San Diego to prepare for the upcoming BIG EAST schedule.

Following their spring break trip, they will open up at home against Fairfield on March 20th followed by Bryant on the 25th. The Huskies’ conference schedule begins with a trip to Georgetown and Villanova on March 31st and April 1st, respectively. They will then travel to play Marist and then end the BIG EAST regular season competition at St. John’s on April 12th. Senior day will be played against Sacred Heart on April 14 in Storrs. This year’s BIG EAST tournament will take place in Tampa, Fla. and will be hosted by University of South Florida on April 19-22.

Scott Warden was named team captain for the 2011-12 campaign and will be the undisputed No. 1 for his final campaign. Warden recorded a 14-7 overall record in doubles this fall, teaming with freshman Jacob Spreyer for all but one match.

Fall Review The Huskies started off the Fall Season at the Sacred Heart Doubles Invitational. All four teams made the semifinals in their respected brackets. The next weekend was the Brown Invite, which also saw some solid doubles results with three out of four teams advancing to the semifinals in their respective flights.

At the UConn Invite, the team finished the weekend with an impressive 20-6 record, including a 14-4 overall mark in singles play as a team.

The doubles units also performed well, finishing with a 6-2 mark on Friday afternoon.

At the Quinnipiac Invitational, the Huskies had the duo of Jacob Spreyer and Scott Warden make the finals in the “A” Flight draw. Jacob Spreyer won the “C” Flight in singles and Scott Warden and Matt Burns lost in the finals of the “A” and “D” Flights, respectively. At the Connecticut State Championships, Wei Lin and Jacob Spreyer made it to the finals of the back-draw.

In dual matches this fall, the Huskies went undefeated at 3-0. They defeated Siena, Hartford and Quinnipiac. In those matches, the Huskies went 8-1 in doubles and 16-3 in singles play. This is the second year in a row that the Huskies finished the fall season undefeated.

The women’s tennis team will prepare for a full slate in the spring, starting with six matches away from home before spring break. UConn opens with two matches in West Point, N.Y. against Army and Stony Brook on February 11 in preparation for the difficult BIG EAST slate.

Connecticut then travels to Marquette to face the hosts on February 17 and West Virginia the next morning on February 18. BIG EAST opponents continue on the schedule with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati scheduled for February 25 and 26 with both matches to be played in Cincinnati, Ohio.

UConn will play Colgate in Albany, N.Y on March 9 before heading west to sunny San Diego, Calif. for the annual spring break trip. UConn will play Point Loma on March 13 and UC-San Diego on March 14 before heading back to Storrs for the first home match of the season against Providence College. March ends with matches at Seton Hall, home vs. Bryant and on the road at Georgetown.

With the BIG EAST Championships approaching, UConn will play at Villanova and Rutgers on April 1 and 4, respectively before finishing the regular season with home matches against St. John’s, DePaul and Hartford on April 5, 7 and 14. The 2012 BIG EAST Championships are set for Tampa, Fla. to be hosted by USF from April 19-22.

Fall Review The UConn women’s squad finished the 2011 fall season with a 2-1 record in dual matches and had several student-athletes perform well throughout the slate of tournaments.

In dual action, the Huskies dropped a close match to Massachusetts, 4-3, before taking a 5-2 decision over Bowdoin and a 4-3 result over in-state rival Quinnipiac.

Sophomore Lucy Nutting went undefeated at 3-0 in singles during the dual matches while sophomore Jennifer Learmonth and freshman Maxene Weinberg finished the dual matches with a perfect 3-0 record in doubles play.

The tournament slate saw UConn finish with an overall singles record of 38-30, led

by Lauren Wilmarth at 8-3. At the Quinnipiac Invitational to start the fall season, Wilmarth, Weinberg and junior Julia Allen each lost in the semifinals of their draws.

Jennifer Learmonth had a great run in the Flight A singles before losing in the final to a very solid player from the University of Hartford.

Connecticut’s top performance of the fall campaign saw UConn win 4-of-6 singles flights and 2-of-3 doubles flights at the New England Invitational hosted by Sacred Heart University. Weinberg, Nutting, Wilmarth and Abby McKeon won Flights 2, 3, 5 and 6, respectively. Alexa Gregory also went on to win the Flight 1 consolation draw. Learmonth and Weinberg combined to take Flight 1 doubles with Gregory and Marie Gargiulo taking Flight 2 doubles.

The reason why she chose a university in England is because it was in Europe so she can travel easily and they also have a number of classes that relate to her major that are not offered here at UConn. It will be a great experience for her and we are sure she will take advantage of everything England has to offer.

The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes.

Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. The University of Connecticut men’s tennis program began in 1932, when coach Marcel Kessel first launched men’s tennis at Connecticut.

Through the years, the program has been led by outstanding coaches, including Dr. John Y. Squires, John Chapman and Ben Kirtland. For one year, UConn men’s tennis was guided by legendary Husky men’s basketball coach Hugh Greer, who in 1953 led Connecticut to its first of three Yankee Conference tennis titles.

Connecticut, which also won Yankee Conference titles in 1954 and 1964, became a member of the BIG EAST Conference in 1980. Guiding the move to the BIG EAST was veteran head coach John Chapman, who directed the men’s tennis team for 28 years (1956-1984).

Current UConn head coach and director of tennis operations, Glenn Marshall, has continued the successful tradition of Husky tennis coaches by leading Connecticut to back-to-back New England Championships (1993 and 1994) and ECAC Championships (1993 and 1994), since taking over for Ben Kirtland in November of 1992. The men’s tennis team has reached the BIG EAST Tournament for the past four seasons and doubled its total wins from the 2006-07 season to the 2007-08 season.

The Huskies compete each academic year in both a fall and spring season, with the ambitious spring schedule featuring a spring break trip and several non-conference contests in preparation for the BIG EAST Tournament Championships. This season, USF will host the conference’s championship competition in Tampa, Fla. During the University’s spring break, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to San Diego for its spring break competition.

In recent years, the UConn men and women have taken annual spring trips to Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Southern California, Florida, Arizona and South Carolina.

Women’s Tennis History Women’s tennis excellence is an annual occurrence at the University of Connecticut, where current head coach Glenn Marshall is in his 13th year in charge of a program with a long and proud winning tradition dating back to the inaugural 1974-75 season.

Entering the 2011-12 season, the Huskies’ overall women’s tennis record for 37 years (69 seasons) is at an impressive 393317-3. Along with annual success in head-to-head matches with various collegiate rivals, the program has also performed well at the New England Championships. The Huskies placed third at the New England Championships in 1992 and 1993, to go along with the consecutive second place finishes in 1990 and 1991.

After founding the UConn women’s program in the fall of 1974, former head coach Pat Babcock led the team to winning records each and every fall and spring season. In fact, from 1974-90, a total of 16 years, the Huskies played all 32 consecutive seasons (fall and spring) with winning records.

Connecticut is a charter member of the BIG EAST Conference and the Huskies have competed in the BIG EAST Championship 23 out of 28 years. For the past four-consecutive seasons, women’s tennis has competed at the BIG EAST Championships.

Consensus All-American Kemba Walker and the men’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship and made the customary trip to the White House.

ATHLETICS It was a remarkable year for UConn Athletics in 2010-2011. The men’s basketball team won its third NCAA Championship in school history and, in the process, UConn became the first school to ever advance to a BCS bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four in the same academic year.

UConn sponsors a total of 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won 11 national championships since 1990 and has won 100 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships.

Danielle Cecco became the first UConn’s women’s diver in history to qualify for an NCAA Championship.

The UConn men’s track and field team hit the “BIG EAST Double” as it won both the indoor and outdoor championships.

The fall of 2010 was highlighted by three UConn team all taking part in NCAA Championship action – the field hockey (quarterfinals), men’s soccer and women’s soccer squads.

All-American George Springer and the UConn baseball team won the NCAA Clemson Regional and advanced to the program’s first-ever Super Regional.

All-American Jordan Todman and the football team won the BIG EAST Championship and played in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – UConn’s firstever BCS game.

National Player of the Year Maya Moore and women’s basketball team set the all-time record for most consecutive wins in college basketball history and later in the season advanced to its fourth-straight final four.

Trisha-Ann Hawthorne earned All-America honors in the 60-meter dash as the women’s track and field team enjoyed one of their finest seasons ever.

n Wednesday, June 29, 2011, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership joined with the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut, and Storrs Center master developer LeylandAlliance, LLC and their partner Education Realty Trust (EDR) in welcoming Mansfield residents and friends in celebrating the ceremonial groundbreaking of Storrs Center.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy, United States Congressman Joe Courtney, Secretary of State Denise Merrill, State Senator Don Williams, State Representative Gregory Haddad, Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, UConn President Susan Herbst, and Mansfield Downtown Partnership Board President Philip Lodewick addressed the crowd of over three hundred who gathered at the intersection of Dog Lane and Storrs Road (Route 195) in Mansfield. Mansfield resident and current UConn student Spencer Hamlin performed the National Anthem to begin the ceremony.

Following remarks from the visiting officials, the ceremonial groundbreaking took place near the site of the first building to be constructed as part of the future downtown.

Storrs Center, which has been in planning and development for almost ten years, will be a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented town center located within an easy walking distance of the UConn Storrs campus, Mansfield’s Town Hall and Community Center, and E. O. Smith High School. The new downtown will host a wide variety of shops, restaurants, offices, and cafés, along with new residential options, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.

The new, market-rate residential units will appeal to young professionals, empty nesters, faculty, graduate students, and other residents of the area – anyone who desires a quality lifestyle in an upscale town center with all of the social and cultural advantages found near one of the nation’s top universities.

Storrs Center has been planned as an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable downtown that combines residential, commercial, civic, and recreational uses within a walkable area. Of the nearly fifty acre site, only about fifteen acres will be developed (twelve acres of which were previously developed). The remaining acreage will be set aside as a conservation area,

which abuts the Whetten Woods, a preserved area held by Joshua’s Tract Conservation and Historic Trust. An intermodal transportation center, adjacent to the new parking garage, will accommodate buses, shared cars, electric cars, and bicycles. Mansfield residents and visitors will have convenient access to many amenities without needing to make multiple car trips.

The first phase of Storrs Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, will be located north of Dog Lane, near Buckley residential hall, and will include 127 apartments and 27,000 square feet of commercial space. The second phase, consisting of 160 apartments and 40,000 square feet of commercial space, will be south of Dog Lane and is scheduled to open in fall of 2013.

“It is one of the most exciting public/private initiatives in the state,” Governor Malloy remarked during the groundbreaking ceremony. “This project does all the right things: It maximizes the value of the University of Connecticut, puts people to work, and creates a town center to enhance the quality of life around a great university.”
