2011-12 UConn men’s cross country/track and field
University of Connecticut 2011-12 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field
2011-12 Season Outlook After a banner year that saw both the Indoor and Outdoor BIG EAST Championships delivered to Storrs, as well as the “Triple Crown” Indoors of the BIG EAST, New England and IC4A championships, the Huskies are poised to tackle the challenge of the defense of all these titles! Leadership is a criticial component of any team, and there will be no lack of that in 2012 as second year Captain Kyle Duggan(Staten Island, N.Y.) is joined by juniors and brothers Jake and Ben Waruch(Kerhonkson, N.Y.), and Mike Alleman(Scotch Plains, N.J.). This campaign will find the defense of the Indoor title taking place at the Armory in New York City, and the outdoor meet features a first ever trip to Tampa, Fla. for the Championships to be hosted by the Bulls of South Florida. The Indoor schedule has been totally revamped, with a triangular meet at home on January 7 with instate rivals Central Connecticut and Southern Connecticut, as well as a return to the great facility at Penn State for the Sykes Sabock Meet. The Great Dane at the Armory and New Balance Collegiate Games at Reggie Lewis round out the scoring meets that precede the Championship season. Head Coach Greg Roy proclaims that “This schedule presents competitive opportunities against the best in the Northeast, as well as competition at some of the finest venues in the United States.” The outdoor schedule has some new looks as well with the Huskies at home for the first time ever in March, as well as for the 3rd renewal of “The Dogfight” with SUNY Albany. The “Battle on the Bayou” in Baton Rouge, La. will present a formidable challenge as eight top-notch track and field teams from around the country will converge on LSU’s outstanding Track and Field Complex. The Huskies will compete at The Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The rest of the schedule is traditional, with the NCAA first round taking place in Jacksonville, FL. The only other change of note is within the staff as long time Associate Head Coach Ted Gibbons has retired with Rich Miller moving into his spot, while alum and three-time All American Will Thomas made the trek cross country from Cal-Berkeley to return to coach at his alma mater. Middle Distance
Senior Kyle Duggan Jumps
For only the second time in the last 13 years, the Huskies lack a returning All-American in the middle distance events. Coach Greg Roy is looking to the talented Bennatan twins, Tim and Alex, to fill the big shoes of top middle distance runners in Storrs. Both have been BIG EAST scorers, Tim in the 800 and Alex in the 1000 and figure to blossom after getting out from under the large shadow of four-time All-American Mike Rutt. After the twins, Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.), a strong anchor on last year’s distance medley bids to become an individual and Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) hopes to return to the form that saw him finish sixth in the mile and split 1:51 for the BIG EAST Champion Huskies. Chris Dailey (Dallas, Pa.) and Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.) were reliable relay men last year and hope to continue their transition from the 400 to the 800. A large group of freshman will also bid to contribute here. Multi Events Always a strength for the Huskies, 2012 should prove no different. The Waruch twins, Jake and Ben (Kerhonkson, N.Y.), return from a redshirt year to join junior Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) to form a trio of past All-BIG EAST performers. Chapman has posted a runner-up finish in the decathlon, while Jake Waruch has done the same in the heptathlon, while Ben has been third in both. The trio hopes to garner a pair of Championships amongst them while all three aspire to top 7,000 points in the decathlon, a reasonable goal according to Associate Head Coach Rich Miller. Veteran scorer Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) rounds out the indoor lineup, while Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) will return from a redshirt year for the outdoor season. Sophomore Sean Walsh (Freehold, N.J.) garnered a pair of 6th place finishes as a freshman and will redshirt the year along with frosh Zach Taylor (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.).
Junior Jake Waruch Multi-Events
Jumps Proven veterans dominate the vertical jumps, while newcomers with potential should be at the fore in the Horizontals. The Duggan brothers of Staten Island,N.Y., Kyle and sophomore Cory have both been All-BIG EAST in the pole vault, Kyle a runner-up. Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) placed third at both BIG EAST Championships for the high jump. Look for backup in the pole vault from past BIG EAST scorers seniors Matt Alexander (Tolland, Conn.) and Zach Meverden (Wexford, Pa.), along with sophomore Justin 2011-12 UConn men’s cross country/track and field

University of Connecticut 2011-12 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field
2011-12 Season Outlook Blades (Griswold, Conn.), while a pair of freshman, Tobey Belton and Mark Fuller (Monroe, Conn.) show potential at the conference level and beyond. Even with no past scorers in the horizontals, the prospects are bright. Freshman Amanze Williams (New Haven, Conn.) may lead both the events and score in the BIG EAST, but not without a fight from classmate Treval Hatcher (Riverhead, N.Y.) in the triple and Claudio Delli Carpini (West Harrison, N.Y.) in the long jump. Throws BIG EAST javelin champion will miss the season after an off season rotator cuff surgery, while Coach Miller looks for the duo of Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and Justin Siekierski (Wilbraham, Mass.) 5th and 8th last year to step up along with freshman Brian Eilers (Simsbury, Conn.). Junior Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) was 3rd in the weight and 2nd in the hammer throw hopes to mount the top step on the podium this year as does senior Mike Alleman, 2nd and 3rd a year ago in the shot put. A big breakthrough is hoped for in the discus, where the Huskies didn’t score a point last year in the BIG EAST, but have a large group with a ton of potential. Faboyede was a non-scoring finalist and Alleman has thrown distances that indicate potential, while Siekierski looks to score in two events. The biggest hope in this event may be from sophomore Eric Masington (Trevose, Pa.) a former Pennsylvania State Champ and versatile freshman John Wlasuk (Newtown, Conn.), who was New England State Champ a year ago in the shot Put and discus. Look for freshman Chris Ackell (Brookfield, Conn.) to provide back up and potentially score as a freshman in the hammer throw. Sprints & Hurdles The deepest and most accomplished group of sprinters in the history of the program return, as evidenced by the fact that the school record setting and BIG EAST Champion 4 x 100 returns four individual scorers, three of whom were AllBIG EAST. Junior Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) scored 22 individual points as he was All-BIG EAST in the 60m, 100m, and 200m, only a conference Individual Championship eluding him. Sophomore Darnell Senior Mike Alleman Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) wasn’t far Throws behind with 19 points and All-BIG EAST honors in the 60m. Senior Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.) battled hamstring issues stemming from the 60m finals, but managed to gut out his All-Conference performance in the indoor 200m. Add Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.), a 100m finalist, and the future is bright for this accomplished group. A pair of newcomers figures to handle the chores in the high hurdles. Delli Carpini, a Clemson transfer and ACC scorer in the 110HH and freshman Selwyn Maxwell (Monroe, N.Y.) both hope to score high in their specialty at the BIG EAST. Junior Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) leads a young and unproven group in the 400. Whyte missed All-BIG EAST honors in the flat 400 by .01, while he hopes to see a return to freshman form in the 400 intermediates outdoors. Tyler Hopson (Andover, Conn.) returns from double hip surgery to join sophomore Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.) and newcomer John Rettenmeier (Sherman, Conn.) as aspiring conference scorers. distance
If there is a group that is the x-factor, the distance runners are it! Scott Johnson is a threetime scorer(best of four in last year’s steeplechase), but is the only scorer in the group. Potential abounds with Ryan McGuire (Orange, Conn.), cross country captain Nick Aguila (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Bryan Fowler (Tolland, Conn.), Connecticut cross country and 3200m Champion last year. In the distance-rich BIG EAST, if the Husky distance runners are able to hold their own, they may be the key to continued program success.

Greg Roy Head Coach 27th Season University of Rochester ‘78
Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men’s track and field head coach, enters the 2011-12 season with a strong returning group of Huskies and a skillful incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Roy enters his 27th season as the head coach of the men’s cross country team and his 23rd season at the helm of the track and field program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have produced a remarkable 258-41-3 record in dual competitions during his tenure, along with nine BIG EAST track and field titles. He has also produced 31 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including 2011 graduate Husky Michael Rutt. Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid foundation for the cross country and track and field programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year. Roy guided the Huskies to one of their best seasons in 2010-11 as UConn earned both Indoor and Outdoor BIG EAST Championships along with claiming the triple crown of the indoor season with the BIG EAST title, New England and IC4A crowns. Roy was named the Northeast Region Indoor Track And Field Coach of the Year after UConn’s success. The Huskies saw Mike Rutt earn All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor seasons under Roy’s leadership. In addition to Rutt, nine Huskies qualified for the Outdoor NCAA East Regional. Roy and his staff were named the 2011 BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year accolades. During the 2009-10 campaign, Roy led his team to six first place finishes, including a fifth straight victory at the New England Indoor Championship and the first ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time since 2004 that the UConn men’s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplishments during the conference Championship. In 2008-09, Roy earned the first back-to-back BIG EAST Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and field team won the 2009 Indoor BIG EAST Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career. Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the 800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-American in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFCCCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the Northeast Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season. During the 2007-08 season, UConn won the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Outdoor title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached six of his athletes to eight BIG EAST individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of BIG EAST Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot streak after the BIG EAST Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship
in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2006-07, UConn was unable to win a BIG EAST Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year. During the 2005-06 season, UConn won its fifth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last five years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of first place finishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy’s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular season. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional finalists, finished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his first NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and finished in 18th place. In the 2004-05 season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program’s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas advanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-consecutive season, but was injured during the competition and could not finish. UConn finished in ninth place at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also finished in a tie for seventh at the New England Championship. Outdoors, UConn finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship and third at New Englands. With Roy’s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump. Roy’s squad captured its fourth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in 2003-2004, its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Championship. The team took second at the IC4A Championship and saw two of its members take home All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship as Will Thomas finished fourth in the heptathlon to become a three-time All-American and Logan Jones earned All-America honors in the 800-meter run. The Huskies took third at the Outdoor BIG 2011-12 UConn men’s cross country/track and field

University of Connecticut 2011-12 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field EAST Championship and Paul Pisano became the first-ever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter. In 2002-2003, Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecutive year. Will Thomas earned the honor for a second time in the decathlon, placing second at the NCAA Championship. Thrower Paul Pisano also earned All-America status for the second straight year, as did Joe Mendel in the sprints. Mike Deibler earned his first All-America honor by placing eighth in the high jump. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title. The 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in Roy’s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the BIG EAST Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-American status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the first five-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson finished 14th at the NCAA cross country championship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fifth All-America title at the outdoor track and field championship, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel finished among the top eight in the indoor 400-meter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place finish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title. Along with a pair of New England titles in 1999-2000, Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place finish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson finished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9:33.85. Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The first 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA competition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fifth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy’s squads finished 81-5-1 in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding .934 win percentage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the 1999-2000 season, Roy had accrued five NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, 1993-94-Indoor, 1995-96 Outdoor, 1996-97 Indoor and 199899 Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-to-back BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards (1995-96-Outdoor, 1996-97-Indoor). In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, finishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. Rich Miller
Will Thomas
Associate Head Coach 17th Season Connecticut ‘95
Assistant Coach 1st Season Connecticut ‘05
Rich Miller enters his first season as the associate head coach at the University of Connecticut and his 17th season overall working with the Huskies. Miller spent 10 years as a part-time assistant working with the multi-event performers as well as those competing in pole vault and javelin. Miller has produced two All-Americans during his time at UConn in Paul Pisano and Will Thomas. Pisano earned the accolade during the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the javelin, while Thomas was named an All-American following his performance in the heptathlon during 2004 and the decathlon in 2002 and 2003. Prior to joining the Huskies full-time, Miller was employed as a physical therapist with Health South/PTSMA in Storrs. While at Health South, Miller provided direct patient care in an outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine clinic while also collaborating with local physicians on implementing treatment plans to rehabilitate patients with a variety of ailments. Miller also served as a member of the BIG EAST Track and Field seeding committee. Miller, who was a 1995 UConn graduate, enjoyed both academic and athletic success during his undergraduate years. He served as co-captain of UConn’s track and field teams in both his junior and senior years, two years in which the Huskies won back-to-back New England Indoor Championships. He was a four-time All-East performer in the decathlon while also earning All-New England and All-BIG EAST honors in the pentathlon and pole vault events. His academic achievements set a standard of excellence for all student-athletes, as he was a member of the 199495 BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star team and was named a UConn Club Outstanding Scholar-Athlete in 1995. A native of Cresskill, N.J., Miller attended Cresskill High School where he lettered in soccer, basketball and track. Will Thomas, a 2005 UConn graduate, enters his first year as a fulltime assistant coach at the University of Connecticut. Thomas will be working mainly with jumps and throws. He is also the recruiting coordinator. Thomas, a two-time team captain, was an outstanding athlete for the Huskies from 2001-2005 as he earned eight BIG EAST titles and was a three-time All-American. His accomplishments include four Outdoor Decathlon BIG EAST titles, two Indoor Pentathlon BIG EAST titles, an Indoor Heptathlon BIG EAST title and a High Jump BIG EAST title. Thomas most recently served as the assistant coach at the University of California at Berkeley for men’s and women’s track and field. At UC Berkeley, Thomas was responsible for recruiting and coaching pole vault, men’s multi-events and recruiting and assisting with the throwing events. During his year stint with the Golden Bears, Thomas coached three All-Americans, aided in meet management, assisted in coaching the 2011 NCAA Decathlon Champion and created a Big Brother weekly academic program for freshman and at risk athletes. Thomas also has experience as an assistant coach with Dartmouth College where he trained and developed the jumps and multi-event athletes, was the recruiting coordinator for the program and coached eight All-Ivy selections, two Heptagonal champions and one regional Qualifier in the long and triple jumps. Prior to his year at Dartmouth, Thomas spent four years with Harvard University as the coaching assistant for men’s and women’s track and field. He was responsible for training and developing the vertical jump and multi-event athletes while also focusing on strength and conditioning. While assisting with the Crimson, Thomas coached 14 All-Ivy selections, eight Heptagonal champions, four AllAmericans and one Olympic Trials finalist in the pole vault and high jump events. A 2005 graduate of UConn, Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. As a student-athlete at UConn, Thomas earned the Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year and BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year awards.

2011 Indoor Season The 2011 indoor campaign saw the Huskies enjoy tremendous team and individual success as the Huskies captured team titles at the New England, IC4A, and BIG EAST Championships. Head coach Greg Roy earned Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors for the indoor season, while Rich Miller and Ted Gibbons, along with Roy, were recognized as BIG EAST staff of the year. The Huskies opened their season at the Yale Intercollegiate Track Classic, capturing victories in seven events. The Huskies also achieved IC4A qualifying times in seven events. Darnell Cummings, Kevin Steinberg, and Jesse Drinks all qualified in the 60m dash, while Mike Rutt (1 mile) and the 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams also qualified on the track. Field events saw Tyrone Faverey (Triple Jump), Mike Alleman (Shot Put), and Noel James (High Jump) hit IC4A qualifying marks.
King and Chapman both took victories in individual events, with King winning the 60m Hurdles and Chapman winning the pole vault.
The Huskies then traveled to New York City taking the team title at the Great Dane Invitational. The Huskies took home six individual crowns, with Rutt winning both the 800m (1:51.45) and the 1000m (2:24.47). To go with their six titles, the Huskies posted top-3 finishes in seven events.
Next up were the BIG EAST Championships in Akron, OH, where the Huskies took the team title with 136.75 points. The BIG EAST meet saw the HusAaron King kies put their depth on display, as the Huskies took 4 of 8 scoring places in both the 60m dash and heptathlon, while more than one Husky scored points in in the 200m, 800m, pole vault, and high jump. King (Heptathlon) and Rutt (800m) scored the Huskies only individual or relay victories of the weekend. King was named Outstanding Field Performer of the meet for his victory. The team title was the programs seventh under Roy, the program’s eighth overall, and their third title in the last four years.
The Huskies then headed back to the Armory for Saturday Night at the Races. Clearing 2.15m, James scored the Huskies lone victory on the night winning the high jump. Rutt took second in the mile, running 4:05.21. The Huskies took top-3 finishes in seven events and took third overall as a team.
The Huskies then went on to the New England Championships where they took their seventh straight team title. The Huskies scored five individual victories, with Rutt setting a school record in the 800m running 1:47.41. This time was also good enough to qualify Rutt for the NCAA Championships in March.
The following weekend saw the Huskies send athletes back to New York for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, and athletes to New Haven for the Giegengack Invitational. At New Balance, Kyle Duggan tied the school record in the pole vault, clearing 5.25m. James cleared 2.20m in the high jump to record his best clearance of the season, and Rutt took second in the 800m. Josh Faboyede took the weight throw in an IC4A qualifying distance of 17.56m, and Cory Duggan won the pole vault competition clearing 4.80m.
At the IC4A Championships, the Huskies again earned a team title, as Rutt (1000m) and King (Heptathlon) earned individual titles. King’s victory marked his fourth heptathlon title of the indoor season.
The following week, the Huskies hosted the UConn Indoor Heptathlon in Storrs that saw Aaron King take the individual victory with 5413 points. Sophomores Jesse Chapman (5057 pts.) and Sam Smith (4745 pts.) finished second and fourth respectively. King and Chapman both qualified for the IC4A Championships with this result.

2011 Outdoor Season The Huskies went into the outdoor season looking to build on the success of their indoor campaign. Behind veterans Aaron King and Mike Rutt, the Huskies captured the outdoor BIG EAST Championship marking just the second time in head coach Greg Roy’s tenure that his teams have captured both the indoor and outdoor BIG EAST title. At the LSU Invite, Mike Alleman won the shot put competition, while Noel James (High Jump) and Scott Johnson (3000m ST) recorded runner-up finishes. Johnson’s 9:09.45 clocking was good for an IC4A qualifying mark. The following weekend at the UConn Decathlon, Jesse Chapman scored the victory with 6,541 points. The Huskies then traveled to Albany for the second annual “Dog Fight” dual meet between UConn and Albany. After winning this meet in Storrs in 2010, the Huskies were defeated by the Great Danes in 2011, 105-89. The following weekend saw the Huskies travel to Philadelphia for the famous Penn Relays Carnival. Johnson recorded his season’s best time in the 3000m ST, running 9:04.80. Alleman was tenth in the shot put Championship of America, an event he won as a high school junior. The 4x800m relay team of Rutt, Dan Holst, Tim Bennatan, and Johnson ran 7:22.89, earning them seventh place in the Championship of America race. The Huskies returned to Philadelphia, this time to the campus of Villanova, for the BIG EAST Championships. The Huskies got individual victories from King (Decathlon), Unger (Javelin), and Tyrone Faverey (Triple Jump), while also getting a win from the 4x100m relay team. King, who also took second in the triple jump, was named the Outstanding Field Performer of the meet, an honor he also won during the indoor season. The Huskies failed to score points in just two events in which they entered an athlete, while recording 17 top-5 finishes across 12 events. The victory marked the program’s third outdoor BIG EAST title, their first since 2002.
2011 Cross Country Season Review With captains Nick Aguila and Scott Johnson leading the way for 2011, the UConn Men’s Cross Country team scored victories at both the UMASS Invitational and the New England Championships. In September, the Huskies opened their season with a victory behind top-10 finishes from senior co-captain Scott Johnson (3rd, 22:41), junior co-captain Nick Aguila (4th, 22:44), and junior Jordan Magath (8th, 22:49). Junior Ryan McGuire and freshman Bryan Fowler rounded out the scoring for the Huskies in 13th and 14th position respectively. The Huskies best race of the season came at Franklin Park in Boston during the New England Championships. Johnson (14th, 25:11) and Aguila (19th, 25:17) again lead the way for the Huskies as they earned the programs first New England title in cross country since 1969. McGuire (29th, 25:33), Magath (32nd, 25:37), and Fowler (55th, 25:59) rounded out the scoring for the Huskies. At the BIG EAST Championships in Louisville, the Huskies recorded a 10th place finish with Aguila finishing first for the Huskies in 43rd place, running 24:46. McGuire (57th, 25:07), Johnson (62nd, 25:13), Magath (73rd, 25:51), and Fowler (77th, 26:03) completed the Huskies scoring. The NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in Buffalo saw the Huskies again take 10th, as Aguila (48th, 32:36), McGuire (73rd, 33:03), and Johnson (74th, 33:07) were the first three Huskies across the line. The Huskies capped their season at the IC4A Championships on the fabled layout at Van Cortlandt Part in the Bronx. Aguila was the first Husky across the line in 13th. Magath (34th) and Johnson (47th) each recorded top 50 finishes, while McGuire (59th) and Fowler (82nd) completed UConn’s scoring 5 on the day, capping a season that saw the same 5 runners score in each meet they competed.
The Huskies then competed at the IC4A Championships the following week on the campus of Princeton University. After taking the IC4A title in 2010, the Huskies finished 6th in 2011. Alleman notched the Huskies lone individual title in the shot put, while Rutt added a 2nd place finish in the 1500m, running a personal best of 3:46.32. During the outdoor season, nine Huskies qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships at the University of Indiana. Kyle Edmonds (400m IH), Holst (800m), Unger and Justin Siekierski (Javelin), Alleman (Shot Put), Josh Faboyede (Hammer Throw), and King (Long Jump and Triple Jump) all completed their seasons at the East Regional. Rutt was the lone Husky to advance to the NCAA Championships, finishing 6th in the 800m to qualify for his second NCAA Outdoor Championship. Rutt concluded his season by finishing fifth in his heat during the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, IA. This race marked the end of a career that saw Rutt earn All-America recognition both academically and athletically, while winning seven major individual championships. 16
