GAMPEL PAVILION The UConn Huskies play all of their home matches in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, a spacious, state-of-the-art building that opened in January of 1990 and houses more than 10,000 spectators. Gampel Pavilion was a $28 million project and totals more than 171,000 square feet in the domed area. The brilliant aluminum dome of the building towers more than 130 feet in the air from ground level. Following the 2009 season of volleyball, new scoreboards and video boards were installed, along with separate displays that showcase team and individual statistics. The 2011 season marks the 18th year in Gampel for the Connecticut volleyball team, which has compiled an impressive overall record of 167-59 since beginning play in the Pavilion in 1993. This season, Connecticut will play at least 13 matches in front of a home crowd at Gampel Pavilion, including BIG EAST contests against Marquette, Syracuse, St. John’s, Notre Dame, DePaul, West Virginia and Pittsburgh. The UConn volleyball team has access to two different weight rooms in Gampel Pavilion along with the Field House Weight Room for use during their strength and conditioning workouts. The weight rooms feature custom made multi-use racks and platforms, dumbbell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

Outside/Right Side Hitters The outside and right side will be UConn’s deepest positions this season, as four veterans return in Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas), Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.), Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) and Julia Hamer (Burlington, Ont.). The four returners will be joined by two incoming freshmen; Karson Ratliff (Wake Forest, N.C.), a former Under Armour Preseason All-American nominee and Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), a 2010 all-district honoree. “I’m excited for both Devon and Karson to join our offensive attack this year. Devon has the ability to terminate and brings tremendous ball control to our program, while Karson has a solid skill set and a relentless work ethic,” said head coach Holly Strauss-O’Brien. Kirk will be a mainstay for the Huskies on the outside, as she returns for her senior season after posting 234 kills last year to rank second on the team. “Jordan has emerged as an offensive weapon for us throughout her career. She has also proven herself as a primary passer and now has all of the tools necessary to help lead us to a championship and dominate in BIG EAST play,” said Strauss-O’Brien. As sophomores, Quayle and Broadwater were two of five Huskies to tally 100 or more kills last season, while they also made an impact on the UConn defense; Quayle averaging 2.17 digs per set and Broadwater posting 0.45 blocks per set. “I believe we are going to witness Mattison having a breakthrough season, she now has all of the tools and the match experience. We will look to her for her constant energy, relentless intensity and solid play,” said Strauss-O’Brien. “We also expect Cayla to be a physical force for us at the net this year. She has worked hard in the weight room and continues to improve her offensive transition game which will lead her to be a consistent terminator and blocking presence for us this season.” Through 18 matches played as a freshman, Hamer posted a .153 hitting percentage last season and will be a leading force at both the outside and right side positions. “This season Julia has the ability to be a difference maker for us. We will look to her to bring fire, consistency and depth to our pin positions,” said Strauss-O’Brien.

Middle Hitters Senior Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) will be UConn’s key middle hitter this season, after posting 91 kills and 62 blocks last year. “Allie brings calmness, stability, efficiency and leadership to the court everyday. She has a wide range of shots and knows what it takes to be a presence in the middle position. Her volleyball IQ along with her match experience has prepared Allie to have a great senior season,” said Strauss-O’Brien. Nickel, who was second on the team in blocks, will once again be called upon to be a leader for the UConn offense as she is joined in the middle by sophomores Colby Billhardt (Darien, Conn.) and Jackie Wattles (Liberty Hill, Texas). Last season, Billhardt and Wattles saw action in just 12 matches combined and will rely on the leadership of Nickel to continue the dominance of UConn’s middle hitters. “Jackie and Colby have both transformed their games over the past year with their work during the off season. Jackie is hitting a heavy ball and has established herself well as a slide attacker, while Colby has a fast snap on the ball and the versatility to play in the middle or right side,” said Strauss-O’Brien. Setters This season’s offense will be driven by junior setter Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.), who captained last year’s squad as the Huskies tallied 1,029 kills. In her first season at UConn, Roidt averaged 9.12 assists per set while also posting a .231 hitting percentage. “Angela is healthy and equipped to run our offense this season, she committed herself to gaining physical strength, consistency and forcing a tempo during the off season. I believe she will come back stronger than ever and determined to help us capture a championship,” said Strauss-O’Brien. Backing up Roidt at the setter position will be three-time All-League honoree and incoming freshman Katie Robinson (Los Altos, Calif.). “Katie is a calm, competitive and hard working setter. Her athleticism combined with her knowledge of the game will allow her to compete to run our offense this season,” said Strauss-O’Brien.

Libero/Defensive Specialists Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) will once again serve as the backbone of the Husky defense as she will be Strauss-O’Brien’s primary libero for the upcoming season. She led the Huskies with 4.85 digs per set last year, recording 465 total digs on the season. Maving’s experience in the back court will serve as a great asset to the three newcomers who will be joining her this year as part of the UConn defense. “Kelsey is prepared and ready to take control of our serve receive and defense. She has worked hard this past spring on being more disciplined and consistent and her serve has become a weapon for us. I hope to see her as a defensive statistical leader for us in the BIG EAST this year,” said StraussO’Brien. The three newcomers include Sage Esposito (Milford, Conn.), Amy Christensen (Ashburn, Va.) and Brianna Datti (Durham, N.H.). This trio will immediately impact UConn’s back court, as they bring with them multiple honors and accolades, including seven all-state selections during their high school campaigns. “The three newcomers to our defense each bring a different quality to the game; Sage is versatile and is a tremendous athlete with a deep passion for the game. Brianna is a spark plug, highenergy and no-nonsense. She makes it her personal mission to keep the ball off the floor during every play. Amy is reliable, consistent and competitive – all qualities you need in a defensive specialist. She has a great mind for the game and loves to win. All three of them are going to help us become one of the best defensive teams in the conference,” said Strauss-O’Brien. “I am so excited to see what this team can do this season. Both Jordan and Allie have grown tremendously as leaders and players and I believe they will guide this group to a successful season with their leadership both on the off the court. I expect nothing but the best during 2011.”

HOLLY STRAUSS-O’BRIEN Head Coach Seventh Season

94-82 Overall Record 44-40 BIG EAST Record Holly Strauss-O’Brien is the sixth head coach in the 34-year history of Connecticut volleyball and is entering her seventh season at the helm. In the past six seasons, Strauss-O’Brien has transformed UConn volleyball into a competitive program in the challenging BIG EAST Conference. Over the past six years, Strauss-O’Brien has guided the Huskies to 94 wins, becoming the fourth coach in program history to tally 90 or more victories during their career. She has had four teams qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, 11 student-athletes earn 27 weekly conference honors and has posted a .600 winning percentage or better in three of her years at UConn. Strauss-O’Brien’s squads have made it to the BIG EAST Tournament four times, including consecutive appearances from 2006 to 2009. The 2006 appearance also marked the first for the Huskies since 2002. Following the 2008 regular season, UConn was given the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament, the highest seeding under Strauss-O’Brien’s direction. The 2008 season marked the highest season winning-percentage of Strauss-O’Brien’s career, leading the team to its first 20-ormore win season since 2003 as they finished with a 21-11 overall record. The Huskies also compiled a 10-4 BIG EAST record, marking the most conference victories since the program captured a share of the regular season title in 1998. She was acknowledged by her peers as one of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) “30 Under 30 Award” recipients in 2008. Eight student-athletes have received All-BIG EAST first or second team honors with Strauss-O’Brien at the helm, including Rebecca Murray who was the most recent honoree, earning a place on the All-BIG EAST second team following the 2009 season. Annie Luhrsen became UConn’s first major conference award winner since 1995, as she was named the Freshman of the Year in 2008. Under Strauss-O’Brien, the Huskies also had student-athletes named to the BIG EAST first team in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2001-02 when Sadé Chambers and Luhrsen earned a spot following the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The leadership Strauss-O’Brien possesses extends far beyond the court, as 22 team members have earned Director of Athletics Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll status and 17 have been named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars for their achievements in the classroom. Under Strauss-O’Brien, five Huskies have earned Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete accolades from the UConn Club, including Jessica Isaac (2010), Megan Frey (2009), Kate Seabaugh (2009), Julie Pickard (2008) and Megan Silver (2007). Sade Chambers became the first UConn Club Outstanding Senior Athlete honoree during Strauss-O’Brien’s tenure, earning the award during 2008. Strauss-O’Brien began her mentorship at UConn as an assistant coach with the Huskies prior to being named the head coach in 2005. As a graduate assistant during the 2003 season, she helped the team to a 20-12 record, before becoming the program’s full-time assistant at the start of the 2004 campaign. She was appointed as the interim head coach midway through the 2004 season. The team responded to Strauss-O’Brien’s guidance by winning six of seven matches under her leadership. The 2004 team went on to end the season with a 17-11 record, including a 6-4 mark in BIG EAST play. Prior to Strauss-O’Brien’s arrival in Storrs, she served as a coach for the Triangle Volleyball Club 17s in Durham, N.C. where she led the team to a Regional Championship title. Strauss-O’Brien enjoyed an illustrious playing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she helped put together a 115-22 (.839) record in her four seasons with the team. As a two-time captain, Strauss-O’Brien was part of three Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles and two ACC regular season crowns. She remains UNC’s career-leader in blocks per game (1.24 b/g), while also ranking third all-time with 371 block assists on her career. Strauss-O’Brien graduated from North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in psychology before receiving her master’s degree in kinesiology, sport management and sociology of sport at UConn in 2005. CPIA

///

The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past five years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Ingrid Hohmann Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaisons to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA Counselor CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, nine full-time counselors, one graduate assistant and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet, as well as reference tools in the Homer Babbidge Library.

SPORTS MEDICINE

///

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their respective sports. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The sports medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, M.D. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include: Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Team Physician Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Thomas DeBerardino, and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff on the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the Burton Family Football Complex. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 650 male and female intercollegiate studentathletes, who are a part of 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

///

The Strength and Conditioning staff, under the direction of Jerry Martin, provides services for all 24 of the University of Connecticut’s intercollegiate sports. UConn volleyball players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available to all UConn athletes. The weight room in Gampel is a free weight facility and supplies the team areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn players can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength program. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual athlete. Specific testing is done to each student-athlete to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. These tests provide coaches and the medical staff with an accurate athletic program of each player.

THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE 

36

The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
