Home Games at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion * - BIG EAST Conference Match
GAMPEL PAVILION The UConn Huskies play all of their home matches in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, a spacious, state-of-the-art building that opened in January of 1990 and houses more than 10,000 spectators. Gampel Pavilion was a $28 million project and totals more than 171,000 square feet in the domed area. The brilliant aluminum dome of the building towers more than 130 feet in the air from ground level. Following the 2009 season of volleyball, new scoreboards and video boards were installed, along with separate displays that showcase team and individual statistics. The 2012 season marks the 19th year in Gampel for the Connecticut volleyball team, which has compiled an impressive overall record of 176-63 since beginning play in the Pavilion in 1993. This season, Connecticut will play at least 11 matches in front of a home crowd at Gampel Pavilion, including BIG EAST contests against Villanova, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers, Seton Hall and USF. The UConn volleyball team has access to two different weight rooms in Gampel Pavilion along with the Field House Weight Room for use during their strength and conditioning workouts. The weight rooms feature custom made multi-use racks and platforms, dumbbell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.
Outside Hitters
Senior Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) provides three years of starting experience to a young group of outside hitters. She set a career-high in kills with 323 last season, averaging 3.05 per set, while hitting .184. Quayle brings a competitive energy combined with experience that will have a major impact on the team’s success. She enters her final season as a Husky prepared to lead the squad on and off the court as head coach Holly Strauss-O’Brien will rely on her to be a major point scorer and help guide Connecticut back to the post season. Sophomore Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) had a solid rookie season, appearing in all 106 sets. She registered 236 kills at a rate of 2.23 per set. Maugle brings a winning attitude to the team and knows what it takes to be an impact player and statistical leader. StraussO’Brien expects her to continue her steady ball control and to be a silent killer playing alongside Quayle. “Devon has worked hard in the weight room and volleyball court over the past year and is prepared to step up into a leadership role,” said Stauss-O’Brien. Fellow sophomore Karson Ratliff (Wake Forest, N.C.) returns after playing in 27 sets as a freshman. She totaled 20 kills and hit .181 coming off the bench. Ratliff is a versatile attacker who can hit from both pins. She and freshman Madeline Kuppe (Palo Alto, Calif.) will both look to make an impact this season after the departure of Jordan Kirk to graduation. Kuppe has a great understanding of the game which will enable her to compete for pin positions. “The consistency of her passing and attacking game will add depth in the outside hitting position,” stated Strauss-O’Brien.
Middle Hitters
Junior middle blocker Jackie Wattles (Liberty Hill, Texas) is the lone returner in the middle for UConn. After playing sparingly as a freshman in 2010, she hit .264 a year ago, totaling 167 kills and led the team with 0.87 blocks per set. This year, Wattles appears to be posed for a break out campaign. “She has invested herself in improving every aspect of her game,” said Strauss-O’Brien. “We need Jackie to be an efficient terminator for us and continue to be a defensive presence at the net.”

A pair of freshmen will be given the opportunity to contribute immediately with Wattles in the middle. Immanuella Anagu (Culver City, Calif.) and Erika Thomas (Ocoee, Fla.) step up to take the place of the graduated Allison Nickel. “Manny is a special athlete who comes from a great club program and is ready to compete for a spot in the middle,” started StraussO’Brien. “Erika will provide depth in our middle as well as compete for a right pin spot.” Anagu is expected to be a strong Schedule blocking presence and impact the transition “I believe that the 2012 schedule will provide us game, while Thomas is also a natural blocker with many challenges and prepare this team for and fierce competitor. the competitive goals we have for the season,” said Strauss-O’Brien.
Setters
“We have depth at our setting position this year which will automatically increase the level of play in our gym,” stated Strauss-O’Brien. Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) returns for her senior season after dishing out 1,722 assists in 2011 and hitting .214 with 45 kills. She has a lot of match experience under her belt and will be counted on to lead the Huskies on the court. Sophomore Katie Robinson (Los Altos, Calif.) returns after minimal playing time a year ago. She played in just 11 sets and collected 48 assists. Robinson will compete for a chance to command the offense after working hard in the off season to fine tune her consistency and decision making on the floor.
The season gets underway at the LMU Invitational in Los Angeles on August 24, with game one coming against the host, Loyola Marymount. Early season tournament play continues when the Huskies host the UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion on August 31 and September 1. Connecticut welcomes Dartmouth, Fairfield and Michigan State for the annual tournament. The Spartans finished 22-12 overall in 2012 and placed sixth in the Big Ten, which has boasted four of the last five national champions. From there, the Huskies take part in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Mo. and New England Challenge in Boston, Mass. BIG EAST play kicks off when Villanova visits Storrs on September 21. Georgetown (Sept. 23), Cincinnati (Oct. 12), Louisville (Oct. 14), Rutgers (Oct. 27), Seton Hall (Oct. 28) and USF (Nov. 9) round out the home conference schedule for UConn.

North Carolina ’03, Connecticut G’05 108-97 Overall Record • 48-50 BIG EAST Holly Strauss-O’Brien is the sixth head coach in the 34-year history of Connecticut volleyball and is entering her eighth season at the helm. In the past seven seasons, Strauss-O’Brien has transformed UConn volleyball into a competitive program in the challenging BIG EAST Conference and led the team to four-straight BIG EAST Tournament berths from 2006-2009. Entering 2012, Strauss-O’Brien owns an overall record of 108-97. She has posted a 48-50 mark in the BIG EAST over the last seven seasons. In a 3-0 victory over New Hampshire at the Holly Young Invitational on September 10, 2011, Strauss-O’Brien recorded the 100th win of her career. Under the direction of Strauss-O’Brien, seven players have garnered post season awards from the BIG EAST. Most recently, Jordan Kirk (2011) and Rebecca Murray (2009) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. In 2008, Annie Luhrsen earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year, becomming the first major conference award winner since 1995, while Chauncey Mickens was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Prior to that, Sadé Chambers (2007) earned a spot on the First Team and Bridget Denson-Dorman (2006, 2007) and Jenny Neelands (2005) each made their way on to the Second Team. In 2011, Kirk became the 13th player under Strauss-O’Brien to record 1,000 career kills.Chambers and Luhrsen marked the first time in program history that UConn student-athletes have been named to the first team in consecutive seasons since a back-to-back effort in 1998 and 1999. Murray was the offensive leader on the 2009 squad that finished the season with a 14-17 overall record. An even 7-7 record in the conference and led the team to the BIG EAST Tournament, letting the senior class graduate with four-consecutive post-season appearances. StraussO’Brien’s 2008 squad finished the year with a 21-11 overall record whilst compiling a 10-4 BIG EAST mark for the most conference victories since the program captured a share of the regular season championship title in 1998. The double-digit win effort also gave the team the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament for its third-straight postseason appearance and highest seeding under Strauss-O’Brien’s direction. In 2007, the Huskies reached the BIG EAST Tournament, finishing the regular season in a three-way tie for sixth place with an identical record from a year before. The 2006 squad finished the year with a 19-11 overall record and 8-6 mark in conference play earning a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2002. That squad fell to a highly talented Louisville program in four sets as the seventh seed. The leadership Strauss-O’Brien possesses extends far beyond the court, as 19 team members have earned Director of Athletics Scholar-Athlete
Honor Roll status and 17 have been named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars for their achievements in the classroom. “The program is rapidly laying down the foundation for future success on the court and in the classroom,” said Strauss-O’Brien. “Our program is full of change...an exciting change.” The 2008 season marked the highest season winning-percentage of Strauss-O’Brien’s career, leading the team to its first 20-or-more win season since the 2003 season. She was acknowledged by her peers as one of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) “30 Under 30 Award” recipients in 2008. In its inaugural year, the AVCA award recognized 30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches at all levels of the sport. Strauss-O’Brien began her mentorship at UConn as an assistant coach with the Huskies prior to being named the head coach in 2005. As a graduate assistant during the 2003 season, she helped the team to a 20-12 record, a six-match improvement from the previous season, before StraussO’Brien became the program’s full-time assistant at the start of the 2004 campaign. She was appointed as the interim head coach midway through the 2004 season. The team responded to Strauss-O’Brien’s guidance by winning six of seven matches under her leadership. The 2004 team concluded the season with a 17-11 record, posting a 6-4 mark in BIG EAST play. Prior to Strauss-O’Brien’s arrival in Storrs, she served as a coach for the Triangle Volleyball Club 17s in Durham, N.C. where she led the team to a Regional Championship title. Strauss-O’Brien enjoyed an illustrious playing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she helped put together a 115-22 (.839) record in her four seasons with the team. In that span, the Tar Heels went 32-4 in 2002 with a trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in addition to three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament titles and a pair of ACC regular season crowns. Strauss-O’Brien was a two-time team captain and remains UNC’s career-leader in blocks per game (1.24 bbg), totaling 311 block assists to place her second on the all-time career list. In addition, Strauss-O’Brien posted the fifth-best single-season total with 36 solo blocks in 2001. She has twice etched her name on the season block assist record list with 128 in 2001 (fourth) and 24 in 2000 (fifth). She graduated from North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in psychology before receiving her master’s degree in kinesiology, sport management and sociology of sport at UConn in 2005. A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Strauss-O’Brien gained international playing experience as a member of the Canadian Junior National Team from 1996-98, making the All-Star team at the Cuba Invitational. She and Tim O’Brien were married on May 24, 2008 and they reside in Vernon, Conn.

Assistant Coach | First Season Boston College ’07, Harvard G’12
Kristin Kenney joins the Connecticut coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach at Harvard for five seasons from 2007 through 2011. In her first two seasons, Kenney was the team’s secondary assistant before being promoted to primary assistant in the summer of 2009. A 2007 graduate of Boston College, Kenney was a four-year starting defensive specialist for the Eagles. Kenney was also the team’s second setter and averaged 4.05 assists per set during her senior season. She received the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Achievement all four seasons and was the recipient of the 2006 Boston College Coaches Award. “We are really excited and proud to welcome Kristin into the UConn volleyball family,” stated Strauss-O’Brien. She joins us, having great experience in recruiting and coaching. Kristin’s energy and hard work will be contagious in our gym and on the recruiting trails. More importantly, she shares in our programs mission of developing champions in the classroom, on the volleyball court and in life.” Outside of Harvard volleyball, Kenney has worked at numerous camps throughout New England and the West Coast. She also represented the Ivy League on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Assistant Coaches Committee. Kenney was also a part of Harvard’s Athletic Department Recruiting Committee and Coach Development Committee. Kenney graduated from BC with a bachelor’s of arts degree in history and human development. At Harvard, she continued her education and will complete a master’s of education in human development and psychology, following the spring 2012 semester.

Assistant Coach | First Season Emmanuel College ’07, Concordia G’10 Steve Yates joins the Connecticut coaching staff after spending the 2011 season as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University. Prior to arriving in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Yates spent three years as a coach and the assistant director of operations at Complete Athlete Inc.; TCA Volleyball Club in Fountain Valley, Calif. In 2011, he was the head coach for the 13-1s and 16-2s. As an assistant coach, Yates worked with the 18-1s in 2009 and the 17-1s and 16-1s in 2010. “We are excited to welcome Steve into the UConn volleyball family,” stated Strauss-O’Brien. “He brings great energy, knowledge and aspirations to help make a difference. With the combinations of Steve’s strong character and work ethic, I believe he will have an immediate impact on our student-athlete’s development and overall team success.” In 2009, Yates spent the fall season as a graduate assistant at Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. After spending the spring season as the head boy’s volleyball coach at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School in New Bedford, Mass. Yates earned a bachelor of arts in American studies from Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass. in 2007 and later earned a master’s of arts in administration and coaching from Concordia in 2010.

Connecticut claimed the title at the 2011 UConn Toyota Classic, its first since 2008, in a three-game sweep of the competition on September 2 and 3. The Huskies opened play with wins over Holy Cross and Howard before beating Binghamton, 3-0, in the championship to take home the hardware. Jordan Kirk, who tallied 35 kills and 20 digs against the Crusaders, was named the tournament MVP after posting her first double-double of the season in a 10-kill, 10-dig performance in the title match. Kelsey Maving and Mattison Quayle joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

Young Invitational, Holly Strauss-O’Brien earned her 100th career victory. She became the 10th active BIG EAST coach to reach the 100-win milestone. Strauss-O’Brien is the fourth coach in UConn history to reach 100 career wins and passed Ruth Mead for third all-time by season’s end with 108 wins.

On October 2, Jordan Kirk recorded the 1,000th kill of her career in a home match against Syracuse. She needed just four entering the contest and after netting three in the first set, fired home number 1,000 late in the second. Kirk became the 12th Husky to reach 1,000 kills and the fourth to do so playing for Holly Strauss-O’Brien. In the very next game on October 4, Kelsey Maving became the 10th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs as she totaled 20 in a 3-0 sweep of Hartford at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies fought off threestraight match points en route to a five-set win over Notre Dame at Gampel Pavilion on October 29. Trailing 1411 in the fifth, Jordan Kirk recorded her 15th kill of the match to keep UConn alive. Devon Maugle delivered a service ace on the next point to pull within one and Connecticut later tied the game at 14 as Allison Nickel and Mattison Quayle teamed up for a crucial block at the net. Jackie Wattles came through in the clutch by registering the final two points on a kill and a solo block to win the final set, 18-16. Maugle led all players with 18 kills and Angela Roidt picked up 56 assists. Kelsey Maving set a program record with 40 digs.

Player of the Week, Times Two
Mattison Quayle was named the BIG EAST and ECAC Player of the Week after posting 20 kills or more in back-to-back matches. She tallied a career-high 21 in a win over Fordham (10/11) and posted a double-double, her fifth of the season, with 20 kills and 11 digs in a 3-1 win over conference rival St. John’s (10/15).
Record Setter
Angela Roidt set a personal-best with 62 assists at Seton Hall (11/13) in the season finale. She finished the season with four matches of 50 assists or more and nine of 40 or more. Roidt also collected seven double-doubles, including a season-high 14 digs at Villanova (10/21).
All-BIG EAST
The UConn volleyball team was represented on the All-BIG EAST second team by outside hitter Jordan Kirk. In her final season, she led the Huskies with a 3.27 kills per set average and 337 kills. Kirk left UConn tied for seventh all-time with 1,143 kills and became the 31st player in program history to earn All-BIG EAST status.

nly six players in the history of Connecticut volleyball have collected both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs during their Husky careers, including two members of the class of 1998. Kim Lobach was the first to accomplish such a feat when she collected 1,189 kills and 1,332 digs from 1990-93. Jennifer Halusek became the second member of the elite group after just three seasons at UConn, and upon finishing her four-year career, she totaled 1,165 kills and 1,393 digs from 1993-96. Heather Sokol joined the group in 1996, finishing a stellar career with 1,005 kills and 1,729 digs from 1993-96. Annette Rynn (1995-98) became the fourth Husky to reach the milestone, accomplishing the feat as a junior in 1997, and recorded 1,508 kills and 1,722 digs by graduation. Jenelle Koester (1995-98) became UConnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-time career kills leader as a junior, finishing her collegiate career with a total of 1,724, and joined this elite group when she completed her senior season with an even 1,000 digs. Most recently, Jamie Hadenfeldt (2001-04) joined the list her senior season, totaling 1,357 kills and 1,399 digs.

The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past five years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Gavin Potter Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaisons to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA Counselor CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, nine full-time counselors, one graduate assistant and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet, as well as reference tools in the Homer Babbidge Library.

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their respective sports. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The sports medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, M.D. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include: Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Team Physician Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Thomas DeBerardino, and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff on the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the Burton Family Football Complex. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 650 male and female intercollegiate studentathletes, who are a part of 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

The Strength and Conditioning staff, under the direction of Jerry Martin, provides services for all 24 of the University of Connecticut’s intercollegiate sports. UConn volleyball players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available to all UConn athletes. The weight room in Gampel is a free weight facility and supplies the team areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn players can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength program. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual athlete. Specific testing is done to each student-athlete to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. These tests provide coaches and the medical staff with an accurate athletic program of each player.

THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league. The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut field hockey reached the NCAA semifinals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA finals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the first time in program history. The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the secondstraight year. BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her second-straight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12. BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 studentathletes.

• Minority students make up 28% of the 2011 incoming undergraduate class. • Since 1995, 1,394 valedictorians and salutatorians have enrolled at all campuses. In fall 2011, 43 percent of freshmen entering the Storrs campus were ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class and 82 percent were ranked in the top 25 percent of their class. • 92% of freshman including students of color, return for their sophomore year. • Over 50 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.0 or better grade point average last year and 26 student-athletes had a 4.0 grade point average in the spring 2012 semester.

AmAzinG fACiLiTies A Campus for the 21st Century • UConn continues to renew, rebuild and enhance our campuses through an unprecedented $2.8 billion, 20-year investment in the University’s infrastructure. UCONN 2000 has been the most ambitious publicly financed university building program in the country. • Now in its 17th year, UCONN 2000 has invigorated the University’s living and learning environments, helped advance faculty research, and stimulated public and private investment. This investment revitalizes the state’s future by providing the means for the University to attract high-achieving students, prestigious faculty, and funding from public grants and private donors. The multibillion dollar facelift has facilitated UConn’s ascent to national prominence among public research universities. • Applications continue to be on the rise with over 30,000 applicants competing for 3,225 seats at the main campus in Storrs and 1,250 seats at the regional campuses. • For the seventh consecutive year, more than half of the applicants are out-of-state students, comprising 25 percent of the incoming class.

• An award-winning building for the department of chemistry — the Chemistry Building is one of the best-designed buildings in the world according to the International Architecture Yearbook. • New buildings for the Schools of Business and Pharmacy. • The modern Biology/Physics Building, Information Technologies Engineering Building, and Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory. • Additions to the William Benton Museum of Art. • Renovations to numerous facilities, including the Homer Babbidge Library, the historic Wilbur Cross Building, the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. • Construction that includes the latest innovations in student residential communities, ranging from traditional residence halls to suites to apartments. • Revitalized downtown campuses in Stamford and Waterbury, a sophisticated marine facility at our Avery Point campus, and new buildings on our Greater Hartford and Torrington campuses, as well as the UConn School of Law. • At the Storrs campus, a new facility for the Social Sciences and Humanities departments, and a dynamic new building dedicated solely to state-of-the-art classrooms, both notable for their environmentally conscious, sustainable energy features.
Forthcoming projects made possible by UCONN 2000 include: • The UConn Technology Park project will be managed through the authority of the • UCONN 2000 Program. This project provides for the development of the first building in a technology park located along the North Hillside Road Extension. The initial facility will consist of a 125,000 square foot Innovation Partnership Building that will house world-class equipment and offer shared laboratories for use by industry scientists and business entrepreneurs as they work side-by-side with the University’s research faculty. The initial building will be completed in 2015-2016.

10 huskymania Division I in all sports, we have a variety of men’s and women’s varsity athletics. Home of Huskymania, sports at UConn include baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, and volleyball. Since 1995, UConn athletic teams have captured 11 NCAA national championships, including unprecedented dual men’s and women’s basketball championships in 2004 —the first University to do so in NCAA Division I history. UConn’s standard of athletic excellence extends to the gridiron, where the Huskies, who have played in four bowl games in the past five, play for sellout crowds of 40,000 roaring football fans at the ultramodern Rentschler Field.

ATHLeTiCs The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics enjoyed another outstanding year in 2011-12. The women’s basketball team advanced to its 13th Final Four as it also won the BIG EAST tournament championship. The men’s basketball team once again played in the NCAA tournament as did UConn teams in men’s soccer and field hockey. The field hockey team also won the BIG EAST regular season championship. The UConn women’s track and field team finished 24th at the NCAA Indoor Championships while diver Danielle Cecco earned a spot in the NCAA Championship for the secondstraight year. UConn individuals from both the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams appeared in NCAA competition. UConn also made the exciting announcement in June that it will elevate its men’s ice hockey program to the Hockey East Conference for the 2014-15 season. Hockey East in considered the finest league in the country in that sport and will further advance to the Division of Athletics.
Victoria Flowers and Heather Wilson continued the success UConn has achieved in recent years in women’s track and field. The Huskies had a total of seven All-Americans in 2011-12.
UConn and state officials made the exciting announcement that the school will be joining the Hockey East Conference in 2014-15.
