Head Coach Bob Goldberg
27th Season • Record: 351-131-3 (Men and Women combined) Head coach Bob Goldberg is entering his 27th year at the helm of the UConn swimming and diving program. While that may seem like long time for many, the time has passed so quickly to Goldberg that he still feels the same energy that has earmarked his program since he arrived 1988. “I believe that I have been so fortunate to coach, work with and get to know so many great student-athletes over these years. I have had the chance to spend time with all the quality assistant coaches who have worked with us on our staff and seen so many changes in athletics in general, including changes within our program specifically. They say that time does pass quickly when you are having fun, and right now I am having a lot of fun” – comments Goldberg. Since Goldberg assumed the reigns of the program, consistent improvement in three fundamental areas has been a team trademark. First is the focus on performance. Last season Connecticut broke 16 team records, had nine NCAA “B” cuts and four conference champions. That success is derived from consistency has been a reoccurring theme in the Wolf-Zackin Natatorium. Goldberg is a believer that consistency in all you do will lead to success. In practice every day the structure he promotes is to get a little better every day in every way. Eventually that will lead to long lasting and permanent changes that bring about success and the coach feels this is far better than a roller coaster of high and low approach to practice. Throughout the country there have been so many programs that have had a year or two of quick success, then drop back into years of average performances. The UConn program under Goldberg has steadily improved individual times, school records, conference performance and personal success through this approach. “The majority of swimmers who come to UConn compete for the team for four years, get better and more accomplished during their time, and finish their career on a very positive note.” To Goldberg, the approach of consistency also applied to work in the classroom, his second area of emphasis. “Our students cannot achieve personal success in school without learning to be consistent in their study habits. UConn has become a university that is very academically challenging and the only way to survive that challenge and excel is a consistent effort over a period of time. “I always try to stress consistency in the pool and in the classroom.” Here again, a history of performance proves this approach works. The UConn women’s swimming team has never had a team GPA below 3.0 since Goldberg has arrived. They have had many individuals that have achieved extraordinary success in undergraduate school and beyond. The men’s team has also been very successful being selected for CSCAA All Academic recognition many times. “It is quite rewarding to see so many of our swimmers and divers go on to successful professional lives, graduate and professional school, and to come back to visit and tell us the lessons and discipline they acquired while here were instrumental in their lives”. The third area the coach feels is so important is the overall social development of the student athletes. “College kids are in a transition from the protected confines of their family home to being sent out into the ‘real world’. I always hope that over their four years at UConn our team members learn the social skills, develop diplomacy and learn respect for others that is so vital to their eventual success in the world.” Last season was a very good one for the Huskies. Starting with dual meets, the UConn women’s team posted a record of 4-2, while the men’s team finished a perfect 6-0. Goldberg feels the team chemistry was at an all-time

high throughout the season and instrumental in the great in-season swims. In November, the team went to swim in the Hokie Invitational and competed unrested and unshaved yet had many great swims and personal best times. The conference meet was also very successful and rewarding producing eight team records and four conference champions. Several swimmers had outstanding times posting multiple NCAA “B” cuts. This season the Coach sees a lot more of the same successes, and the team has an eye on the conference championship meet with a goal of performing at the level needed to win. Additionally there are several swimmers in the pool very capable of heading to the NCAA National Championships and several international swimmers who will compete at the highest level in their home country. Goldberg has a very extensive background in every activity in and around the water. Competing at the Huntington School for legendary Coach Al Houston and at Springfield College under sport icon coaches Charles Silvia and Charles Smith provided him great professional role models. Fifteen years coaching at Penn State including being a tenured assistant professor was a most rewarding experience. An additional three years at NC State in an administrative and faculty role led him to UConn. A Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Springfield College, Master’s degree in Biomechanics from Penn State and selected graduate work at NC State complete his academic preparation. Goldberg has produced a teaching film, a teaching book and has authored or been part of several published articles over his career. He has expertise in just about every area of aquatics from Scuba to lifesaving, competitive diving to beginning swimming, and from competitive swimming to swimming pool design construction. Coach Goldberg and his wife Alyce have three children and six grandchildren. David lives in Austin, Texas with three children, Scott resides in Cincinnati with one child, and Sarah lives in Connecticut with two boys.

Head Diving Coach John Bransfield 16th Season
University of Connecticut diving coach John Bransfield is in his 17th year with the program. Bransfield, the 2012 Big East Women’s Diving Coach of the Year, led Connecticut to a very successful season last year. Throughout a first semester of tearing down and rebuilding, the program made its greatest strides during the rigorous training trip in January. Upon returning for the 2nd semester competition, UConn divers had a great showing in dual meets, particularly at Princeton and Dartmouth at home. Six divers scored at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships, with each of them making finals in at least one event. Junior Taryn Urbanus was the top scorer on the team, becoming the first 3-Meter Champion in the history of the program. Taryn followed the 3-Meter with a third place finish in the 1-Meter. Junior John Brice was fourth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter, and Alli Butera was also in the finals in both events, finishing fifth and eighth respectively. Sophomores Michelle Kalupski and Spencer Beaulieu made the finals on one board and consolation in their second event. Five UConn Divers qualified to compete in the NCAA Zone Championships in March. Urbanus had a terrific showing at the meet, making the finals on both boards and just missing a berth at the National Championships by one spot on the 3-Meter. Brice also made finals at the Meet in the 3 Meter event. The diving program graduated three divers in May and has a young squad on the boards this year. With one senior, two sophomores and five freshmen, they are working hard to advance their skills following a regimen of advanced training methods and technical progressions. Bransfield is both confident and excited with the current team, seeing opportunity to create more depth in the program with the necessary focus already visible in his athletes. Developing champions is not something new to Bransfield. In his 37 years of

Assistant Swimming Coach T.J. Natal enters his second year at UConn and his first season as a full-time assistant coach after spending the last three seasons at Tulane University. In his first season with UConn, the Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team finished a perfect 6-0 in dual meets, while the women’s swimming and diving team saw several strong performances at the conference meet. He was an assistant coach for the Green Wave for two years before becoming the interim head coach for his final year there. Before Tulane, Natal held coaching positions at several places. He coached the men’s and women’s swimming team at the University of New Orleans, where he helped eight swimmers earn NCAA B Cuts and had several top eight finishers at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet during the 2009-10 season. Prior to New Orleans, he coached the USS Elmwood Sharks in Harahan, La. Under his guidance, 22 swimmers qualified for sectionals, while four swimmers qualified for Junior Nationals. Natal, who is from the New Orleans area, began his coaching career at Jefferson Country Club, serving as the head coach there until 2007. His own swimming career took off at Archbishop Rummel High School, as he was a four-time all-district honoree and claimed all-state honors three times. In his junior year he won the state title in the 100-meter freestyle and as a senior he won the title for both the 100 and 50-meter freestyle. While swimming for the Sharks he made six Junior National cuts and one Senior National cut. After transferring from Loyola University, he swam for Louisiana State University from 2001-03. He would later complete his bachelor’s degree from Our Lady of Holy Cross in 2006.

college coaching, he has had many conference champions and at least one conference champion at each and every school that he has worked at, including Army, Maine, Springfield and Northern Michigan. Bransfield has coached several national qualifiers, including a four-time NCAA Division II Champion. In 2003, Melissa Kull became the first Connecticut diver to compete at the NCAA National Championships. Stephen Ferreira (‘10) competed at the NCAAs, followed by All-American Danielle Cecco (’13), who competed at the National Championships three straight years, in ‘11, ‘12 and ‘13. With a background which extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving, Bransfield enjoyed many years of success with U.S. Diving as a Junior Olympic coach. He was been recognized by the National Governing body twice in that phase of his career with stipends to work with two U.S Olympic Coaches. Bransfield has considerable experience in the sport away from the pool deck as well. Four times he served on the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee, and in the early 90’s he was appointed as a Regional Technical Director of United States Diving. While coaching at Army, he hosted numerous clinics for U.S Diving Coaches involving several U.S Olympic Team Coaches. In 1998, he served as the Competition Manager of the Goodwill Games in New York. Bransfield has taught numerous coaching clinics for Grass Roots fundamentals, Spotting Training and Safety Certification. In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’s Republic of China. The opportunity allowed him to closely observe the training programs at two Provincial sites and attend the Asian Junior Championships. Bransfield is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College. He earned a master’s at Northern Michigan and continued to study biomechanics while coaching at Springfield College. Bransfield and his wife, Ginny, have four sons, and presently reside in Storrs.
Matt Donovan
Assistant Swimming Coach Matt Donovan enters his first year with the Huskies after being hired in November. Donovan, who has extensive coaching experience at both the collegiate and club level, joins the Connecticut swimming and diving team as an assistant coach. The former Keene State swimmer earned a varsity letter in all four of his years with the Owls, and he qualified for the Conference Championship each season. He was a team captain at Keene State, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, finishing with a 3.0 GPA. Following school, Donovan served as an assistant coach at Farmington High School in Connecticut. He helped lead the school to four Nutmeg Conference team championships from 1998-2000, and seven swimmers earned All-State honors throughout his time there. Donovan jumped to the college ranks in 2004 as an assistant coach for Rutgers University, where he was supervised by four-time Big East Coach of the Year Chuck Warner. He took on many roles while with the Scarlet Knights, including supervising team practices and organizing Group Swim lessons. In May of 2000, Donovan was named the head swim coach of the Somerset Valley YMCA Swim Team. He spent 15 years with the team, overseeing a program of over 400 participants. His primary responsibilities included training the senior athletes and looking over all aspects of the club’s aquatic business. Donovan saw great success while with Somerset Valley, leading the team to the New Jersey State Championship in 2006, and 2010-14. He was tabbed as the New Jersey All-Star Team Coach in 2003 and 2004. Prior to UConn, Donovan held a brief coaching stint with the YMCA of Broward County it Florida, starting in August of 2014.

2014-15 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving As the Huskies head into a new season optimism runs high on the deck for the men’s swimming and diving team. A very good squad last year, Connecticut has improved though recruiting and experience, and the coaches, captains and team together all expect great things. “As is true with our women’s team, we have a men’s team that can challenge for a conference championship. Our expectation is that everyone in the pool is working towards that challenge. As a group, this men’s team has the energy and ability to be something special. They will be fun to watch!” “One of the best senior classes in UConn school history is in charge now,” says Coach Goldberg. Led by Lachezar “Latch” Shumkov, this is a formidable group. Shumkov is an eight-time Bulgarian National Champion with wins in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke in each of the last two years. He holds both team breaststroke records and has the skills to win a conference championship and advance to the NCAA’s. Equally impressive is Sawyer Franz. “Sawyer’s rate of improvement at UConn has been striking, culminating in his win in the 400 Individual Medley at last season’s conference meet. He is so valuable to the team since he can swim about any event, any distance and any stroke, all effectively.” A quality breaststroker on his own, Wyatt Boliek would be a star on any team. “Wyatt has had some incredible races for us, and his presence along with Latch gives us a great breaststroke event.” Luke Zalewski has been impressive in his mid-distance events with the 200 being his strong suit. He is also very good in the 100 and 500 and has range to be effective in the longer freestyle events. Finally, second year senior transfer Felix Samuels can post times that can get him a return trip to the NCAA Championships and he is critical to all the Connecticut relays. The senior class is backed up by some very good juniors. Jeff Magin has shown steady improvement and is ready to make his presence felt in the backstroke and freestyle events. He is deceivingly fast in the water. Joining him in rate of improvement is Greg Baliko, a breaststroke and IM specialist. “Greg has increased his strength so much that he will be dominant in the IM for us.” Ryan Walsh has been good in the pool since his arrival with one of the best fly strokes around. This should be a great year for him. Finally, school record holder Mike Lennon returns and can
dominate the distance events at the conference meet. “Mike is as good as anyone in the pool, and I expect he should contend for the conference championship”. - Goldberg There is a quality sophomore class also and now they have experience from last season. Leading the way is Chris Girg, the conference champion is the 500 freestyle. “It is hard to believe that Chris missed NCAA’s last year posting a 4:19 for his 500. I think he can certainly qualify this year!” Chris is also very good in the butterfly events. Another bright spot for the Huskies is James Donlevy. An impressive sprinter, he is just scratching the surface of his ability. Good things are expected from James. Jerry Burton and Kevin Konarski strengthen the mid-distance free events and give the Huskies a lot of depth in the 100, 200 & 500 freestyle events. Mike Hopkins has greatly improved his breaststroke events and Keon Songui-Samuel will be a factor in the sprint free and backstroke events. There are some strong swimmers in the freshman class with Kyle Kimura proving to be a real surprise. He has very good times and a big future for the Huskies in the free and fly events. Connecticut natives Brandon Cole (Breast/IM), Dan Krentsa (Free), Jack Malespini (Sprint) and Greg Dziopa (Breast) all will be strong contributors for UConn. Walker Hill will combine with Franz and Magin in the backstroke events for a strong 1-2-3, and Vince Camin will look for a spot in the breaststroke. Pat Kavanaugh will certainly make his mark in the distance free and fly events and should emerge as a very good swimmer for the Huskies. This year’s diving squad is arguably one of the better teams there has ever been at UConn. Having graduated only one senior from a successful campaign in 2013-14, the Huskies have six divers back, along with three promising freshman. Junior John Brice heads up the men’s side, having made Finals in both the 1 and 3-Meter in last year’s conference meet. Three sophomores also scored in both the 1 and 3- Meter at the conference meet, and the freshman are all capable of challenging for spots at the Conference Championship as well as the NCAA Zones. What differentiates this group from some in the past is having the number of athletes with a common focus, motivation and potential. “We have no seniors in the program, and yet while we have one designated captain, everybody in the program is stepping up to the challenges each day with maturity and resolve. This should be an exciting year for the diving program, particularly in the championship stretch.” - comments Bransfield. All this adds up to a very well-rounded team for UConn with leaders and very strong back-ups in every event. “If this team can come together as I expect they will, they can be a very good group. Last season they were undefeated, and they have the potential to make that happen again. The question will be whether we can stand up to the challenge of the other teams in the conference and swim to our ability. If so, we certainly have a shot at winning it in Greensboro in February.” - Goldberg

Sophomore backstroke specialist Christine Pedersen set two school records in her first season at Connecticut last year.
The UConn women’s swimming and diving team in 2014-15 looks to be a formidable group this season. The squad is deep, talented and so varied that every event has more than one elite quality swimmer or diver. Goldberg has a wealth of talent to choose from when making a line up. Coming off a dual meet record of 4-2 with solid performances at their mid-season invitational and a third place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship meet, the Huskies are looking forward to a very goal orientated season. “We are making our conference meet the focus of our season with an eye to compete to win the championship”, says the coach. “It is a realistic goal that can be accomplished if we are all on the same page in training and work ethic throughout the year.” Leading the way for the Huskies are five seniors who have been the rock of the team. Unquestionably, the performance leader is sprinter Chinyere Pigot. Pigot is a two-time Olympian representing Surinam, a school record holder, a Team MVP and the American Athletic Conference Champion in the 50 freestyle. She is also a solid NCAA “B” qualifier with a 22.6 personal time in the 50 freestyle and a school record time of 49.40 in the 100 free. “I have seen so much growth in her from the way she competes to her growth in the classroom and in the way she leads our team in the pool”. A senior who has really improved and made an impact on the team is captain Kate Munzenmaier. A true ‘jack of all trades’ in the pool, her freestyle took off last year to produce a 1:49.6 in the 200 and a 4:54.9 in the 500, both personal bests by far. She was also impressive on relays for the Huskies. Holly Gallagher is another senior who has really helped the Huskies cause. Her fly and free have been remarkably consistent and dependable to UConn in both dual meet events and at championship time. Hannah Perna is another team captain and a role model for the younger swimmers. “Hannah never takes a set off,” remarks Goldberg, and she is consistently good in distance free and fly events. The final senior is Tessa Pena, who is another swimmer who can swim in many places. She is extremely talented and can be a real wild card for the Huskies as they look towards the conference meet. There are five juniors who are very important swimmers for the Huskies. Two quality breaststrokers are part of an international flavor on

the team in Laura Hyland from Great Britain and Canada’s Laura Ruttan. Both had two really great seasons for the Huskies and look to extend their success this year. A second Canadian, backstroker Kennedy Meier, is an elite level talent who could easily challenge for a conference championship in the 200 backstroke, while Emily Boyko is a locally grown butterfly specialist who continues to give the Huskies great depth in the fly events. Finally, Caitlin Cole is a powerful distance swimmer for the Huskies and will continue to be a big contributor. The sophomore class, the largest group on the team, is a very talented group of swimmers. They are 13 swimmers strong and a group any coach would love to have. Leading the way is Norwegian National Champion backstroker Christine Pedersen. An elite level talent, Christine set the 100 backstroke record as a freshman and should break both backstroke records again this year. There is no doubt in Goldberg’s mind that she can meet NCAA standards. Backstroke is the strength of this class with Jaimie Lynn Brookover, Sam Park and Nicole Ricci part of this outstanding group. Brookover had a terrific conference meet last year after a season of training that had interruptions because of injuries. Samantha Park came out of nowhere to post a 2:04 in the 200 back and should continue to improve as a sophomore, and Nicole Ricci was right on her best times and can break into the lead group this season. There is also a strong freestyle influence in this class. Margot Manning has the ability to be a major force in mid-distance free along with Dee Parsons. Both are very high quality swimmers. Shelley Faykes anchors the distance lane and posted a very impressive time in the 1650 free at the 2014 conference meet. Tara O’Prey, Maddie Hoopes, Jordan Drake and Darah Jampo also cover the sprint free events and they can combine to be a relay team in themselves. A true surprise last season was Sophie Nothnagle, who came within an eyelash of setting the 200 fly team record. She has teamed up with Caroline Finkle to give UConn a great fly event. Nothnagle was also impressive in the 500 freestyle at years’ end. New faces on the team will really help the Huskies. Emily Parillo figures to be a factor in the fly and gives the Huskies a great event for the conference championships. Sammi Bassman will add to the breaststroke lane and has quick explosive speed. Emilia Weihenig has already posted fast times in the backstroke and Christina Cirillo increases the impressive depth UConn has in that event. Sophie King has natural speed in free and fly and can become impressive. Sara Nestrowitz has great mid-distance free speed, and transfers Rachel Mulligan and Emily Caplis round out a very good group of newcomers to the team. This year’s diving squad is arguably one of the better teams UConn has ever fielded. Having graduated only one senior from a successful campaign in 2013-14, the huskies have six divers back, along with three promising freshman. Leading the charge is the defending American Athletic 3-Meter Champion, junior Taryn Urbanus, who is also this year’s team Captain. Three sophomores also scored in both the 1 and 3- Meter at the conference meet, and the freshman are all capable of challenging for spots at the Conference Championship as well as the NCAA Zones. What differentiates this group from some in the past is having the number of athletes with a common focus, motivation and potential. “We have no seniors in the program, and yet while we have one designated captain, everybody in the program is stepping up to the challenges each day with maturity and resolve. This should be an exciting year for the Diving program, particularly in the Championship stretch.” - comments Bransfield. “Our goals are very clear for this group,” says Coach Goldberg. “We have talent, depth, front line swimmers and high quality back-ups. We also have great leadership in our seniors and team captains. If we can train throughout the year, race ourselves every day and remain focused on our conference championships, we can have a wonderful opportunity to challenge for the American Athletic Conference Championships.“

WOLFF-ZACKIN NATATORIUM UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT

T
he Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. The 39,000-square foot natatorium provides one of the finest facilities on the East Coast. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are the only varsity programs housed in the facility. The Natatorium was built in part of the university’s $28 million Sports Center Complex, which also includes the 171,000-square foot Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, home to the UConn men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. It features several high-tech innovations making the pool one of the fastest in the region. The facility is a 50-meter “stretch pool” that includes two moveable bulkheads, allowing the pool to assume several different configurations. The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deepwater course in the Wolff-Zackin pool, featuring eight-foot wide lanes and a flow-through bulkhead. A second bulkhead provides an enclosed warm-up and warm-diving area, while also allowing for a separate diving area. The diving area includes two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards mounted on concrete. A dry board and trampoline with spotting rigs, and one and three-meter boards with rigs over the top makes for excellent training. Some of the other features of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium include a state-of-the-art Colorado Electronic Timing System V, men’s and women’s team record boards, a videotape replay system and an underwater viewing window. In addition, there are individual coaches’ offices, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms and visiting team locker rooms. The spectator area can accommodate 800 Husky fans. Adjacent to the Natatorium is Brundage Pool which is available to UConn coach Goldberg and his staff to enhance the Husky training program. Between the two pools, the Huskies have 18 lanes available to them for training purposes. The $14 million remodeling of Connecticut’s athletic facilities included complete renovation of Brundage Pool, extending and expanding the great

facilities UConn has to offer its swimming and diving programs. The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium houses a terrific training facility for divers on the UConn team. There are two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards on shorts stands, with a spotting rig above each level. On deck, there is a dry board and a trampoline, each with a spotting rig, along with two state-of-the-art camera/Tivo systems and flat screen televisions for each side. As part of the remodeled athletic complex project, UConn swimmers have the use of a new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room, featuring all of the latest in strength and conditioning equipment. The Huskies also have daily access to a spacious athletic training facility with the latest technology for rehabilitating athletic injuries.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE
he strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Matt Balis. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn swimming and diving athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. Each program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This format provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each swimming and diving athlete.
he Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care. The team is spearheaded by Robert Howard, MA, ATC, the Head Athletic Trainer. Walter Trisdale is in his second year of handling the dayto-day training needs of the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving team. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Giselle Aerni, the Director of Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Matt Hall. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES
E
stablished in 1986, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) provides comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. In her third year working with the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs is Lindsay Darcy. Darcy recently joined the UConn staff from Manhattan College. Darcy earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange field hockey team, and earned BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors and at the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Darcy monitors student-athlete academic performance, counsels individuals regarding major and career options, facilitates registration in courses that accommodate practice times while ensuring progress toward a degree, coordinator tutor support and assists student-athletes in the developing of learning and time management skills. The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team takes great pride in the academic and leadership accomplishments of its team members. The women’s team consistently has been recognized for academic excellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover (2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest award recognizing academic and athletic achievement and improvement, service, leadership, perseverance, and character). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last eight Kinsman Awards, with Craig Orski winning in 2003 and Bobby Folan in 2005 and Tristan Jones in 2007. Folan was also selected by the NCAA as the sole UConn representative to its 2005 Leadership Conference.

Community Service and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are highly-involved in the SAAC. The 2003-04 SAAC president was Kate Jelus from the women’s team. The 2006-07 vice-president was free-styler Emily Karel. The Committee consists of representatives from each one of UConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to community service, it promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The SAAC also holds an annual Talent Show for freshman student-athletes and an ice cream social at the end of each semester during the study period for final exams.

ince 1995, the State of Connecticut has invested nearly $5 billion in the University’s infrastructure. UConn 2000, 21st Century UConn and, now, Next Generation Connecticut have been the most ambitious publically financed building programs in the country, totaling nearly $4 billion. The state has committed to spending $200 million on the Bioscience Connecticut initiative at Farmington’s UConn Health campus, and $172 million on the development of the first building of the UConn Technology Park in Storrs.

Connecticut continues to lead the way in the areas of stem-cell research and energy alternatives.
Connecticut Loves Its Sports Residents of Connecticut go wild over Husky sports‌ but there are also several other big time sports attractions in the state. The Travelers Championship in Cromwell is a regular stop on the PGA Tour and part of its FedEx Cup series. The Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies is a prominent part of the U.S. Open Tennis Series while Lime Rock Park in Lakeville has been in existence since 1957 and hosts events each summer as part of the American LeMans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series. The Connecticut Sun of the WNBA and several minor league baseball and hockey teams are also part of the state’s sports scene.
Hartford: UConn’s Capital Town • The UConn School of Business has classroom facilities in downtown Hartford and soon the UConn Greater Hartford Campus will move directly downtown. • “The Insurance Capital Of The World” – home of Aetna, Cigna, ING, The Phoenix Companies, Travelers, United Health Group and The Hartford Financial Services Group. • Home of the multi-billion dollar conglomerate United Technologies Corporation and its subsidiaries Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, UTC Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, UTC Power, Otis and UTC Climate Controls and Security. • A population base of 23 million people within a 100-mile radius and 100 million within an eight-hour drive. • Hartford has the nation’s highest percentage of individuals over the age of 25 who have a college bachelor’s degree or higher. • Cultural attractions include: The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, the oldest public art museum in the United States, and The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. The Connecticut Convention Center opened in 2005 and is the largest convention center between New York and Boston.
Storrs Center: A New Downtown
Our Campus is Connecticut In addition to the main campus in Storrs, the University of Connecticut has a number of other campuses and schools around the state, which truly makes the state into the campus. The UConn Health Center and John Dempsey Hospital is located in Farmington, just west of Hartford. Today, Bioscience Connecticut, an $864 million initiative, is transforming the campus of the UConn Health Center. Bioscience Connecticut is a forwardthinking plan to create thousands of construction and related jobs in the short-term and generate long-term, sustainable economic growth based on bioscience research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization. It is a multifaceted plan that also includes initiatives to improve access to healthcare services in the region and beyond. Renovations have begun in the original research tower and work is underway to build the new outpatient care center and the new hospital tower. In addition, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in January 2013 for the new $1.1 billion Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, the first return on the state’s Bioscience Connecticut investment, which will be housed on the UConn Health Center campus. The Jackson initiative is a collaboration between the globally prominent Jackson Laboratory, UConn, the Health Center and leading academic and healthcare institutions in the region. The UConn School of Law is one of the leading public law schools in the country. Its campus, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, is among the most beautiful of any law school in the United States. The newly-completed law library is perhaps the finest facility of its kind in the world. Two miles from the center of Hartford, the Law School is located in a neighborhood of large Victorian homes. UConn has long had an undergraduate campus in the Greater Hartford region and plans have been announced to relocate that campus to downtown Hartford in the former home of the The Hartford Times. That campus is expected to open in 2017. The UConn campus in downtown Stamford is surrounded by a cluster of corporate headquarters including a number of Fortune 500 companies, such as Pitney-Bowes and Charter Communications. The UConn campus in Waterbury is housed in a new state-of the-art facility. Options exist to transfer to the Storrs campus after two years or earn a degree right in Waterbury. UConn’s “campus by the ocean” is located at Avery Point in the southern portion of the state in Groton. Avery Point is the home to the Connecticut Sea Grant Program in conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Project Oceanography, and education program for middle school and high school students, is also on the Avery Point campus. The Torrington campus, located in the hills of the western portion of the state, is home to the famed Litchfield County Writers Program. The program attracts visits by some of the country’s most preeminent writers including Roxana Robinson and the late Madeline L’Engle and Arthur Miller.

The UConn men’s basketball team has long considered Madison Square Garden a home-away-from-home. This was proved yet against when the Huskies won the NCAA East Region there in 2014 en route to a national championship. UConn fans dominated the MSG crowd and filled the city’s hotels and restaurants with Husky pride. UConn football makes its debut in New York City when the Huskies play Army at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 8.

President Susan Herbst Dr.
Susan Herbst is the 15th president of the University of Connecticut and began her duties at the school in June of 2011. Prior to coming to her position in Storrs, Herbst was the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for The University System of Georgia. Herbst is the first woman to be selected as the University’s president since the school’s founding in 1881. In her position with The University System of Georgia, Herbst led 15 university presidents and oversaw the academic missions for all 35 public universities in Georgia. She worked closely with the system’s Board of Regents on all aspects of finance and higher education policy for the state. The system has more than 311,000 students, roughly 10,000 faculty members, and a budget of more than $6 billion a year. She had been with the Georgia system since 2007.
In addition to those duties, Herbst continued to hold a faculty appointment as a professor of public policy at Georgia Tech. She is the author of many scholarly journal articles and books, including her most recent book about incivility in American politics, Rude Democracy, released in September 2010. Herbst was previously provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at SUNY-Albany from 2005 to 2007, and also served as acting president of the school for a year. She also served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University from 2003 to 2005. Herbst joined Northwestern University as an assistant professor in 1989 and remained there until 2003. There, she rose to become chair of the political science department and associate dean for faculty affairs.
She received her BA in political science from Duke University in 1984 and her Ph.D. in communication theory and research from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communications in Los Angeles in 1989. Herbst was born in New York City and raised in the mid-Hudson Valley town of Peekskill, N.Y. She and her husband, Doug Hughes, have two children: Daniel Hughes and Becky Hughes.
Director of Athletics Warde Manuel
W
arde J. Manuel, who has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics, became the Director of Athletics at the University of Connecticut in March of 2012. Manuel, a 1990 graduate of the University of Michigan where he played both football and track and field, had most recently been the Director of Athletics at the University at Buffalo for six years. His first academic year of 2012-13 was a highly successful one for UConn teams, highlighted by the women’s basketball team winning the NCAA Championship. In addition, UConn teams from men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and baseball all took part in NCAA tournament play while the women’s diving and men’s and women’s track and field programs were all represented in NCAA individual championships. This success more than continued into the 2013-14 academic year as UConn won three national championships for the first time in school history – men’s basketball, women’s basketball and field hockey. In addition, the men’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. UConn was just one of four schools nationally that finished in the top ten of the Capital One Cup on both the men’s and women’s side. Manuel directed UConn’s acceptance into membership of Hockey East, the nation’s premier men’s ice hockey conference, as the Huskies begin play in the league in 2014-15. Ground was broken for the UConn Basketball Champions Center in the spring of 2013 and the facility opened in the summer of 2014 to service both the Huskies’ men’s and women’s championship basketball teams. Manuel oversaw a coaching transition in men’s basketball with the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun and the hiring of former Husky student-athlete, NBA player and UConn assistant coach Kevin Ollie. In December of 2013, Manuel hired former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco as UConn’s new football coach. During his tenure, Manuel also hired new head coaches for the UConn men’s and women’s ice hockey, volleyball, women’s track and field and softball program. The UConn Division of Athletics once again had an outstanding rate performance in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) in 2014 as all three national championship teams posted a perfect 1000 single-year score while field hockey also had a perfect 1000 four-year score. A total of 14 UConn teams posted perfect single-year scores of 1000 and five had multi-year scores of 1000. The men’s basketball team has had APR scores of 978, 947 and 1000 in the past three years as Manuel has helped develop a comprehensive academic plan for all UConn programs. Manuel has already become a key leader in the American Athletic Conference and has been named a member of the league’s Finance Committee.
Manuel led a 20-sport program at Buffalo, an institution that is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities. Buffalo enjoyed an unparalleled period of success during his time there from an athletic, academic and community service perspective. From an academic standpoint, teams at Buffalo enjoyed incredible success. When Manuel arrived at UB, there were four programs - football, men’s basketball, wrestling, and baseball - that fell far below the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) cut score of 925. With a focused academic plan, all four teams posted a four-year APR rate above the cut score and at the end of 200910, 10 of UB’s 20 sports had scores of 975 or above. Buffalo enjoyed great on-field success during Manuel’s time as the football team participated in the 2009 International Bowl and the men’s basketball team made postseason appearances in three of the past seven years. Olympic sports also thrived under Manuel’s leadership with accomplishments such as three-straight Dad Vail Regatta titles by the rowing team, six wrestlers earning spots at the 2011 NCAA Championship and the women’s tennis team making an appearance in the 2008 NCAA tournament. The sports of baseball and softball won a record number of games during his tenure and student-athletes earned All-American and all-conference honors at record rates. Manuel was honored by Sports Business Journal as a 2008 national 40-Under-40 honoree after receiving the same honor from Business First of Buffalo in Fall of 2007. Manuel has served on a number of national and conference committees and boards. In September of 2011, he was one of only three Athletic Directors asked to serve on the Collegiate Model Rules committee, a working group of the Division I Committee on Academic Performance, charged with broad overview of the current NCAA Rules Manual. He also currently serves on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and served for four years as a member of the NCAA’s Academic Cabinet. During that time, he was selected as Chair of the NCAA Academic Eligibility & Compliance Transfer Ad Hoc Committee. He is a member of the Boards of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the D1A Athletic Directors Association. He also serves as a member of the Council of Presidents Budget & Finance Committee and served for three years as the Chair of the Mid-American Conference Director of Athletics Finance Committee. In June of 2007, Manuel accepted the Opportunity Award by all-time tennis great Billie Jean King, as Buffalo was recognized by the Women’s Sports Foundation as one of four “standout” colleges and universities in the nation for outstanding achievement in providing equitable athletic opportunities for its female student-athletes. Prior to his time at Buffalo, he was the assistant and associate director of athletics for the University of Michigan, where he oversaw that school’s football and men’s basketball programs. In February 1998, he was named an assistant athletic director at Michigan with responsibilities for overseeing operational facets of the university’s athletic program. He was named an associate athletic director in September 2000. Born May 22, 1968, Manuel is a native of New Orleans, who was a high school All-American football player and played for the University of Michigan under its legendary coach, Bo Schembechler. Manuel earned multiple letters and started at defensive end in his sophomore year. His football career was cut short by a neck injury and he subsequently earned two letters on the Wolverines’ track and field team. After graduating from Michigan, Manuel was coordinator of the university’s Wade H. McCree, Jr., Incentive Scholars Program from June 1990 to August 1993. The program is a partnership with The President’s Council of State Universities and Detroit Public Schools that helps students prepare for higher education at public universities in Michigan. He subsequently worked briefly as an academic advisor with the Georgia Tech Athletic Association before being named assistant athletic director of academic affairs. In the course of working on a PhD in social work and psychology at Michigan, he earned a master’s degree in social work in 1993 and an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School of Business in April 2005. Manuel and his wife, Chrislan, have a daughter, Emma (19), who is in her junior year at UConn, and a son, Evan (15).

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the hall’s long list of inductees now includes UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. Once you finish your tour of the Hall of Fame, Springfield’s neighboring suburb of Agawam is the home of Six Flags New England, the region’s largest amusement park.
The largest city in the country and the “media capital of the world” is a UConn city. New York City is located approximately two hours from Storrs and when the Huskies are in town, they make their presence known. UConn took over Madison Square Garden in March 2014 when the Huskies won the NCAA East Regional on their way to the national championship. The Huskies make their football debut in the Big Apple this year when they play Army in November at the new Yankee Stadium. From the glimmer of Times Square, to the vast expanse of Central Park, to the majestic skyline, New York City can be easily reached by the Metro-North train lines that run into southern Connecticut. The metro New York area also boasts 10 major professional sports franchises.
BOSTON (86 miles) The birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is a living history textbook, covering everything from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Meanwhile, the city blends its old world charm with a cosmopolitan new world attitude that is evidenced by some of the trendier shops and restaurants that line both historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Back Bay’s Newbury Street. One of the world’s foremost centers of education, Boston is home to over 50 colleges and universities; perhaps the entire world’s most concentrated collection of colleges. The greater Boston area also includes the summer beach resorts on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A hub of sporting activity, the 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox have called fabled Fenway Park home since 1912. The 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics and the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins also call Beantown home, while the 2002, 2004 and 2005 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots and MLS’ New England Revolution play outside of the city in Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium.
PROVIDENCE (51 miles) Rhode Island’s capital city shows that one of the nation’s smallest states also has plenty to offer its visitors. The multi-cultural capital city, which dates back to 1636, is the Ocean State’s centerpiece. The best known hamlet on the Rhode Island shore, the ocean town of Newport is world famous for its mansions and is a popular vacation destination for those seeking aquatic activities. Newport’s renowned music festival is also a well-attended annual event.

he University of Connecticut Division of Athletics enjoyed one of its finest years ever in 2013-14. UConn was just one of four schools nationally to finish in the top ten of the Capital One Cup standings on both the men’s and women’s side. UConn won NCAA national championships in three different sports for the first time in school history – men’s basketball, women’s basketball and field hockey.
