A Look at the American Athletic Conference Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2014-15 consists of 11 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa.

The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only.

The American Athletic Conference holds television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which will give the conference unprecedented national exposure. The football portion of the contract, which begins in the 2014 season, calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played in 2015, will be carried either on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday.

In men’s basketball, the television deal calls for all conference-controlled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for national broadcast or national cable – a minimum of 107 games. The entire postseason tournament will be televised, including the championship game, which will be either on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of the American’s women’s basketball games will be carried on either national cable, regional sports networks or ESPN3.

Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, has immediately taken a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in four Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won nine NCAA women’s basketball championships since 1995.

American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure. An American representative would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. J.J. Clark Head Coach First Season J.J. Clark, who has two NCAA national championships to his credit, was named the Head Women’s Track and Field Coach at the University of Connecticut in late June of 2014.

Clark mainly due to his great character and work ethic,” said USC women’s track and field coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert, who served with Clark on the Tennessee staff from 2003-07. “He is a very honest person who mentored me at Tennessee and taught me how to think with an NCAA Championship mentality. UConn will be the perfect place for him to continue his legacy of building and graduating student-athletes and winning championships.”

In international competition, Clark had 11 Lady Vols perform for Team USA and others represented Trinidad and Tobago, Ireland, Canada and Jamaica in international competition. Dee Dee Trotter won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in the 4x400 meter relay and also was fifth in the 400 meters.

Clark advanced two athletes (his wife Jearl and his sister Hazel) to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Hazel also qualified for the 2008 Games in Beijing.

1992-2001 -- Assistant Coach University of Florida Cross Country/Track & Field

A native of Maplewood, N.J., and a graduate of Columbia High School, Clark won the New Jersey high school state title in the mile and two-mile as a senior in 1982.

2001-11-- Head Coach University of Tennessee Women’s Track and Field

Clark is a 1986 graduate of Villanova with a degree in communications. With the Wildcats, he developed into a sub-four minute miler in his competitive days en route to qualifying for the 1988 U.S Olympic Trials.

2008 -- Middle Distance Asst. Coach U.S. Olympic Team Women’s Track and Field

Clark returned to his prep alma mater in 1986 and served as assistant track coach. While at CHS from 1986 to 1989, he worked with the girls’ and boys’ middle distance and sprints corps. Then, in 1991, he made his transition into collegiate coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Florida for one year before being hired full time there.

Clark studied anatomy and physiology coursework in graduate school at UF. Bridging the gap between his high school coaching and college experience, he also took courses in nutrition and exercise physiology in 1990 at Kean College in Union, N.J., and became certified as a licensed sports massage therapist in 1991 from the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville.

Clark and his wife Jearl have a son Jorell. Clark is the son of Jetta Clark and Joe Lewis Clark, the bat-wielding principal of Paterson, New Jersey’s Eastside High School, depicted by actor Morgan Freeman in the 1989 movie “Lean on Me.”

Clive Terrelonge

Associate Head Coach 11th Season Coach Clive Terrelonge enters his 11th year with the University of Connecticut Women’s Track and Field Team. Since his hire in 2004, the Connecticut program has become an increasing force on the National stage. His sprint/hurdle group has garnered multiple Big East and ECAC titles, as well as NCAA All-America Honors. For his efforts, Terrelonge has been a five-time recipient of the USTFCCA North Eastern Region Coach of the Year.

In 2014, Terrelonge assumed the role of interim head coach and led the squad to runner-up and third place finishes at the indoor and outdoor American Athletic Conference Championships, respectively. Under his watch, eleven Huskies qualified to compete at the NCAA East Regional and five Huskies (all sprinters) booked tickets to the 2014 Outdoor NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, to earn four All-American honors.

The 2013 season was a very rewarding year for coach Terrelonge and his athletes. The associate head coach helped lead the team to second place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor Big East Championships.

Indoor saw two of his athletes earn All American Honors on the DMR. Celina Emerson collected her third All-American Honor by running the 400m leg and Ana Groff netted her first All-American Honor by running the 800m leg at the NCAA Championships. The sprinters also set new program records in both indoor and outdoor in the 4x 400 relay. Emerson help lead the 4x400m relay to the NCAA East Regional along with Tiffany Daley, Paris Taft and Deysha Smith-Jenkins. The quartet ran 3:37.61 at the ECAC Outdoor Championships which is a new school record.

The 2012 season was no exception to Terrelonge’s successful tenure at Connecticut. The Indoor season was highlighted by the Distance Medley Relay, which earned NCAA All American Honors, running 11:10.24 to earn eighth place at Nationals. Two-time All American and DMR 400 meter leg, Celina Emerson, followed her successful indoor season by reaching the NCAA East semifinal during the outdoor campaign. Joining Emerson from the sprint/hurdle group, were teammates Ana Groff and Madeline Smith in the 800 and 100H respectively. The outdoor season also included a record breaking 4x400 relay team, to help the Huskies reach an overall 2nd place finish at the ECAC championships.

During 2012, it was an exciting year for the Connecticut track and field team, as well as for the alumni. Former Husky hurdler, Phylicia George, represented Canada in the Games of the XXX Olympiad. She reached the final of the 100 hurdles running a personal best of 12.65. Coached

by Terrelonge during her collegiate career, George made history by becoming the first UConn alumni to reach the Olympic games in the sport. Competing in the 2012 Olympic trials were 2011 graduate Trisha Ann Hawthorne and 2005 graduate April Garner. Both athletes reached the semifinal in their respective events; Hawthorne in the 100 m dash for Jamaica and Garner in the 100 Hurdles for the USA. The UConn sprinters have been extraordinary since Terrelonge’s addition to the program. Between 2005 and 2011, the title of BIG EAST Champion in the 60m and 100m has been in the sole possession of 2014-15 UConn women’s cross country/track and field

The 2010-2011 campaign saw then senior Trisha Ann Hawthorne and freshman teammate Celina Emerson named second team NCAA Indoor All Americans in the 60m dash and 4000m DMR respectively. Emerson became the youngest UConn sprinter to receive All America honors, while Hawthorne added to her already extensive list of accolades. Now graduate Trisha-Ann Hawthorne remains the most decorated sprinter in the history of UConn track and field. She has dominated the sprint events in the Big East, winning an unprecedented four straight outdoor titles in the 100m and 200m. She also owns the Big East record for three straight indoor victories in the 60m and 200m, tallying an impressive 17 individual titles. Hawthorne’s name is cemented on the record board as she holds school records in the short sprint events from the 55m to 200m. She was the first athlete in UConn history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two sprint events and the first track athlete to earn NCAA All-American honors by placing seventh in the 100m at the 2010 Outdoor NCAA Championships. Hawthorne has represented her native country Jamaica on several occasions beginning in 2008 at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She went on to earn a silver medal for Jamaica as part of the 4x100 relay at the 2010 NACAC U-23 National Championships. During the indoor 2011 season, she competed at the storied Milrose Games as part of the Jamaica vs. USA 60m sprint event.

Terrelonge also helped guide 2010 graduate Phylicia George to success both regionally and nationally during her career as a Husky. George was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA National Championships in the 2010 indoor season for the 60H, and in 2009 as part of the Outdoor 4x100 relay team. She currently holds the sprint hurdle records for the 55H, 60H and 100H. Off the track, she received NCAA Academic All-America, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honors. More recently, George represented Canada at the 2011 IAAF World Athletic Championships, placing seventh in the final of the 100H. She competed at the 2009 Canadian World Championship Trials, and the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials in the 100 hurdles and 200m dash.

The 2010 season saw another excellent year for the Huskies and Terrelonge. Once again, Terrelonge was honored as the indoor and outdoor Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Huskies claimed both the indoor and outdoor ECAC Championships as well as the New England Championships. UConn also placed third in the Big East Indoors while finishing second at the Big East Outdoor Championships. Hawthorne claimed seven titles overall,

UConn Women’s Track and Field including four Big East Championships. She was crowned Athlete of the Meet at both ECAC Championships as well as the Big East Outdoor Championships. She then went on to become an NCAA Outdoor All-American in the 100m.

The Huskies saw three sprinters qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hawthorne joined Mandela Graves-Fulgham, George and freshman Kristen Brown to compile the NCAA Qualifying 4x100m relay team. In total, UConn saw nine sprinting records broken on the season.

During the 2009 season, Terrelonge led four of his athletes to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor National Championship in their individual events. At the Regional meet with Terrelonge coaching five of the ten total athletes representing UConn, the program recorded its best finish in school history. Earlier that season, the Huskies won their second consecutive ECAC Championship title.

Hawthorne was named ECAC Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet, while just two weeks earlier she had been dubbed Big East Outdoor Championship Track Performer of the Meet. At Sea Ray Relays, Coach Terrelonge’s 4x200 led the UConn team with a win and then season best time. A short two weeks later, at the historic Penn Relays, the 4x200 team bettered their time, which eventually earned them a ninth place National ranking as released by Track & Field News. The 4x100 team also met success as they became the first in program history to make the “Championship of America” final.

During the indoor campaign, UConn defended its title as Big East Champions as Hawthorne won both the 60m and 200m, while Graves-Fulgham broke her own school record to claim the 400m title. In the process, both gained a berth to the NCAA National Championship. With two champions in three events, and four athletes in the finals of the 60m dash, Terrelonge’s sprinters amassed over 50-percent of the team’s total Big East points.

Terrelonge and the Huskies had an outstanding year in 2008. En route to the Huskies’ first ECAC Outdoor Championship title, his sprint group led the way accounting for nearly half the Huskies’ points. At the conclusion of the season, four new school records were set. The 2008 indoor season proved to be historic as UConn pulled off the “triple crown” in the championship season, winning the New England, Big East and ECAC Championship titles. It was the team’s first ever Big East Indoor title, their second consecutive ECAC crown and their third straight New England Championship victory. At the conclusion of that historic season, the program was recognized by the USTFCCA with Northeast Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Field Athlete of the Year honors in Bill Morgan, Clive Terrelonge, and Tamara Highsmith, respectively.

During Terrelonge’s first year with the University of Connecticut program, he wasted no time in making an impact. In 2005, he led current volunteer coach, April Garner, to new and presently unbroken school records in the high hurdle events. That year she was the Big East runner up in the 60 hurdles and 100 hurdles, following her ECAC indoor hurdle title from the previous year. As a post collegiate, she competed on an international level under the leadership of Terrelonge. During that time, she reached the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, 2006 and 2007 US Indoor National Championship 60 hurdle finals.

Prior to coming to UConn, Terrelonge worked at Brown University and his alma mater, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. While at Brown, he helped guide the team to a second place finish in the Ivy League in 2004. Over the two years he served at Brown, his sprinters broke two school records that stood for over ten years in the 100 and the 110 hurdles.

In 2004, Brown had its first women’s Ivy League 100m champion over six years. At Lincoln, Terrelonge helped lead the women’s squad to a NCAA Division III Championship and produced eight All-American sprinters/hurdlers that year. During his time as an assistant coach, the men captured six NCAA indoor and outdoor titles and two runner-up trophies. The men’s sprinters also set five NCAA records and earned over sixty All-America honors.

As a collegiate competing for Lincoln University, Terrelonge earned 19 Division III All-America honors in the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay. He is a former NCAA two-time 400m champion, three-time 800m champion, and still holds the 800m NCAA Division III outdoor record. He was an accomplished professional athlete as a World Champion and two-time Olympian for Jamaica.

Terrelonge was inducted into the NCAA Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Track and Field Championship Banquet in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. He received his bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Lincoln in 1994. Terrelonge currently resides in Storrs, Conn.

Terrelonge and the Huskies performed well during the outdoor campaign in 2007, where five of the Husky sprinters competed in the NCAA Regionals. The 2006-07 squad captured two titles during the indoor season; the ECAC and the New England Championship titles. The Huskies were third at the Big East Championship, which was the highest finish in school history before the UConn victory in 2008. In recognition of his achievements, Terrelonge was named one of the United States Emerging Elite Coaches and was selected to participate in the United States Track and Field (USATF) Elite Men’s and Women’s event camps, which were held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. July 14-19, 2007.

In 2006, Terrelonge coached fourteen athletes to New England Championship titles, and ten athletes to All-Big East status. He finished the season with four athletes competing at the USA Jr.

Trisha-Ann Hawthorne

Assistant Coach First Season Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, one of UConn’s most decorated athletes, has been named an assistant coach for the University of Connecticut women’s track and field program, head coach J.J. Clark announced on Dec. 30, 2014.

Hawthorne, who competed as a sprinter for the Huskies from 2007-11, makes the transition into coaching after serving in Connecticut’s compliance office, assisting student-athletes in gaining knowledge of the rules and regulations that govern the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program.

The Elmsford, N.Y. native will coach alongside firstyear leader Clark as well as associate head coach Clive Terrelonge. In addition to her duties on the track, Hawthorne will assist the program in recruiting, as well as aid in the completion of administrative activities.

“We’re thrilled to add Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to our staff,” commented Clark. “She brings a wealth of experience on the track and comes from a compliance and administrative background. She rounds out our staff and we’re excited to have her on board as we get ready to begin the indoor season.”

“Happy would be the word to choose upon accepting the position,” said Hawthorne. “ I feel honored to work alongside two great, experienced and knowledgeable coaches. The best part is being able to work with a program I was once a student-athlete of as well. I’m looking forward to a great season for the program as a whole.”

As a student-athlete, Hawthorne set the school record in the indoor 100m, 60m, and 200m and also ranks first in the program in the outdoor 100m and 200m. The Big East’s most decorated female athlete,

2014-15 Media Guide she finished first in the 200m at the New England Championships, tying her own school record and setting a new meet record (23.55) during her junior season in 2009-10. During the outdoor campaign she was tabbed as the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year and anchored the Jamaican U23 4x100 meter relay to a silver medal (44.20) at the NACAC Under-23 National Championships.

She was tabbed as the Big East and ECAC MVP after her senior season, during which she won the conference indoor 60m and 200m and took gold at the outdoor 100m, 200m and 4X100m.

She was selected as an NCAA All-American in the outdoor 100m as a junior and qualified for the IAAF World Jr. Championship. Additionally, the sprinter earned 12 ECAC championships (100m, 200m, 4X100m) and was a four-time New England Champion (55m, 200m, 4X400m)

2013-14 Season Review The 2013-14 campaign marked UConn’s inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference, and the Huskies wasted little time cementing their spot as top contenders in the new league.

The 2013-14 season saw 2008 Olympian Amy Yoder Begley join the staff as the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach working primarily with UConn’s distance runners. Long-time associate head coach and sprints specialist Clive Terrelonge assumed the role of interim head coach and led the squad to runner-up and third place finishes at the indoor and outdoor American Athletic Conference Championships, respectively. Under his watch, eleven Huskies qualified to compete at the NCAA East Regional and five Huskies (all sprinters) booked tickets to the 2014 Outdoor NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, to earn four All-American honors.

The 4x400m relay team of Celina Emerson, Nyanka Joseph, Faith Dismuke and Deysha Smith-Jenkins became the first UConn 4x400 team to reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 12th with a time of 3:34.89 to earn Second Team All-American honors. Celina Emerson, who became the first Husky to qualify in the 400m dash, earned Honorable Mention All-American honors after finishing 17th.

Eleven Huskies qualified for competition at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida. Freshman Taylor Anderson earned a spot in both the 100m and 200m events. Deysha Smith-Jenkins also posted a qualifying time for a spot in the 200m after running a 23.60 at the ECAC Championship, representing the second-fastest time in program history behind Trisha-Ann Hawthorne’s 23.22. Smith-Jenkins also competed with the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, which marked the first time in program history both relays earned the chance to compete in the NCAA East Regional in the same season.

Four-time All-American Brigitte Mania and junior transfer Faith Dismuke represented UConn in the 800m run while Emily Durgin competed in her first-ever NCAA East Regional in the 10,000m run. Saija Bikanova battled the field in the high jump and narrowly missed qualifying for the National Championship, while Odrine Belot was the lone Husky to compete in the triple jump. Celina Emerson competed in the 400m along with both relay teams.

Under Terrelonge’s guidance, six indoor and outdoor school records fell in 2014. The 4x400m team that

reached the NCAA Championship lowered the school’s standard three times during the outdoor season, posting one of the top times in the nation at 3:32.83 to earn the silver medal at the American Athletic Conference Championship. UConn’s 4x200 set and reset school records n consecutive days at the historic Penn Relays, with Smith-Jenkins, Emerson, Joseph and Taylor Anderson clocking 1:33.38 to take fifth place. Celina Emerson established herself as the premier 400m sprinter in school history, setting both the indoor (53.38) and outdoor (52.79) UConn records in her senior campaign.

A pair of Husky distance runners garnered The American’s Most Outstanding Track Performer awards at both conference championships. Sophomore Emily Durgin was superb at the indoor championship, winning three events in two days as an individual in the 5,000m and 3,000m runs and the anchor of the distance medley relay. Her efforts helped UConn to a runner-up finish at the first-ever American Indoor Championship. Senior Brigitte Mania earned the same honor during the outdoor season after capturing the 800m and 1,500m runs, becoming the first Husky to win the 1,500m at a conference championship.

Standout Celina Emerson became the first Husky honored by The American when she earned Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 11 after a record-setting campaign at Armory College. The senior registered a time of 53.38 in the 400m to establish the new UConn indoor record. Freshman Taylor Anderson earned her first collegiate honors during the outdoor season, taking home Track Athlete of the Week honors on Apr. 29 after anchoring the 4x200m squad to a pair of records at the Penn relays.

Multi-events athlete Saija Bikanova became just the second Husky to capture the heptathlon at the ECAC Championship on May 17 in New Jersey. Her total of 5,352 points, which ranks second-most in school history, provided UConn its first ECAC heptathlon title in 19 years. Terry Roy was the only other Husky to do accomplish the feat, doing so in 1992 and 1995.

UConn would go on to win its fifth ECAC Outdoor title in the last seven years. The Huskies have been dominant in the championship, claiming eleven overall titles as a program. After winning the 2014 indoor title as well, the Huskies have swept both the indoor and outdoor crowns four times in the last eight years.

In The Classroom

The University of Connecticut women’s track and field and cross country teams have been a success not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. The cross country team has been named an NCAA Division I All-Academic team for the past nine years, while the track team has earned that distinction for the past eight. The main criteria for the award is that the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 or higher. In 2010, Phylicia George and Sara Leslie were named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners. Last year, the Huskies had six student-athletes earn USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Honors for the 201314 season. Ana Groff was named to the 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in the spring.

In 2008, George was one of 10 individuals chosen for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. In 2007, former UConn distance standout Jillian Sullivan earned Third Team Academic All-America honors by ESPN The Magazine as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

USTFCCCA All-Academic Honorees The program attributes its success to its work ethic and support staff. The team devised a plan to help enhance academic performance and promote team unity through organized learning groups. The plan is flexible, low-impact and positive. All historical feedback from programs like this have indicated it is successful at achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve the team’s objective are its support staff, including now retired John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. The Huskies welcome a new support staff with Lindsay Darcy who has taken over the women’s track and field program.

CPIA is a unit within the Division of Athletics with the primary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.

In The Community The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service plays an integral part of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The UConn Women’s Track and Field team places tremendous importance on staying active in the community and each year they dedicate hours of their time to young children and their families.

The squad has started a charitable initiative on the team since the 2009-10 season, “Team Hand-Off”. Each month, student-athletes from the program can give a presentation to their coaches and teammates for a specific charity that has affected their lives. On a monthly basis, the staff and program donate $50 to a pair of charities chosen by the student-athletes. Some organizations that have been chosen include, Chituka Village Project, Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, Sail to Prevail, Samaritan Purse, Teen Challenge and Malawi Desk Program.

The women’s track and field/cross country teams have been active in several community service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Over the past year, the team has been heavily involved in the University’s Husky Reach program. During the year, Women’s Track and Field athletes travel to Verplanck Elementary School in Manchester, Connecticut to read with students in grades K-5 and talk with them about the importance of working hard in the classroom. The girls kicked off the year with the Verplanck BBQ where they met the students and their families. In the Fall, they visited the school on a weekly basis to read in each classroom and during their intersession training, the team took another trip to Verplanck to hold a Flashlight Reading Night with children and their families.

The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a 2006 graduate and former UConn volunteeer coach, was chosen to represent UConn at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one representative to the event. Williams now works with HuskySport at UConn, working with student-athletes in the local Hartford communities.

The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.

Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’ potential to benefit significantly from a leadership development experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletic eligibility remaining for the following academic year.
