The unlikely legalization of marijuana would do wonders for the economy
SENNA OMAR Assistant Features EditorDue to the federal ban on marijuana, many states who legalized pot have surpluses of weed trapped within their borders. Many growers are being forced to either liquidate or turn to the black market for a chance at turning profits. Federal legalization of marijuana is the best solution for these growers. With the current affairs of Congress, many find this unfeasible and are hoping for the legalization of marijuana trade between legalized states. This bill would require President Biden to do something productive. Still, it would allow the West Coast to supply the rest of the country, thus removing the financial burden on growers and bolstering the economy.
Lawmakers in Washington, Oregon and California, the country’s top marijuana producers, in anticipation of the Justice Department’s new marijuana policies, approved a “trigger bill.” This bill authorizes the government to begin the interstate

cannabis trade, should the federal government allow for it. Washington and Colorado, spearheading the road to legalization, have stricter regulations on their markets in comparison to the bolstering markets of California and Oregon. The current market presents the probable dominance of West Coast weed growers in the interstate market. Washington and Oregon, the first to legalize marijuana in 2012, were forced to make concessions to the Department of Justice. Washington cannabis producers are banned from accepting “out-of-state investments,” and growers have facility size restrictions preventing them from expanding the industry. California’s lax regulations have allowed for the legal weed market to thrive within the state and will likely give them an edge within the interstate market. Desert disaster — The downfall of Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated return to the music scene left a salty taste in the mouths of music lovers everywhere. After a six-year hiatus, fans were ecstatic to see Ocean headline Coachella. People lined up hours before his set, eagerly anticipating the performance of their lives. As the section opened, the crowd had multiplied, filling every corner of the floor, and the excitement in the air was palpable.
For those who could not make it to the festival, there was the promise of a live stream which many eagerly awaited. Each year the festival live-streams later sets on YouTube for the first weekend of the musical performances. But an hour before his performance, it was announced that his show would not be live-streamed on any online platforms. This left many fans at home feeling excluded and miffed.
At long last, the artist emerged onto the stage, an hour later than scheduled. The crowd erupted as he launched into his hit song “Novacane.” For a moment, it seemed as though the show was going to live up to all the hype. Unfortunately, it was not long before things began to go downhill.
Throughout the concert, Frank Ocean spent most of his time hiding behind the stage, leaving fans with just a big screen that displayed recordings of the show. Songs such as “Lost” and “Chanel’’ were performed as remixes that filled up half of the performance. To make matters worse, he did not sing through a microphone for the majority of his show, leaving fans with a pre-recorded version of each song.

As the remixes finally came to an end, Ocean finally sang a handful of his wellknown songs, and it seemed like the show might have taken a turn for the better. Amid his disastrous show, he held a moment with his fans, sharing a personal story about his brother Ryan who had passed away from a car crash in 2020. Ocean expressed his reluctance to perform at Coachella but said that his brother Ryan has always loved going to the festival. At that moment, the undertone of the show shifted, becoming more sympathetic. It felt intimate and personal as the crowd reciprocated his energy.
Despite Frank Ocean’s instance of honesty, this illusioned connection began to fade. The show went on, and the lack of substance and energy became more

Poverty is a leading cause of US mortality rate
HARU CHANG Assistant News EditorThe U.S. has a far higher poverty rate than other affluent democracies. Considerable research demonstrates that poverty is likely “fundamental causes” of disease that also affect its outcome. Poverty embodies access to important resources which consequently can mean the maintained association with disease even when intervention mechanisms change.
A study led by David Brady, a UCR professor of public policy, estimates the association between poverty and mortality: quantifying deaths associated with poverty. They measured poverty relatively as less than 50% of the median income. “Current poverty” was observed within each year, and “cumulative poverty” was grouped to the past 10 years. Current poverty was associated with a 1.42 greater mortality hazard while cumulative poverty - which compares the data of being always in poverty and never being in poverty in the past 10 years - was associated with 1.71 greater mortality hazard.
The survival of individuals in poverty begins to decrease significantly in their 40s than people with higher income and more adequate access to resources. The gap between the survival rate of those in poverty and those that aren’t increases until 70 years of age when the survival rates converge. The research found that current poverty was a larger threat to public health than accidents, lower respiratory disease, and stroke. In 2019, current poverty resulted in 10 times as many deaths as homicide, 4.7 times as many deaths as firearms, 3.9 times as many deaths as suicide, and 2.6 times as many deaths as drug overdose. Cumulative poverty showed approximately 60% greater mortality than current poverty and was associated with great mortality than obesity and dementia.
High poverty rates in the US begets lower life expectancy. These estimates can help understand racial inequalities in life expectancy as those of the global majority are more likely to be affected by poverty in the US. The study also considers the benefits of reduced economic costs from lower mortality that can be prompted by poverty-reducing social policies. Of course, COVID-19 had seriously aggravated socio-economic conditions; the effects of which have not been fully represented in the study. The researchers note that the study’s estimates may be conservative about the numbers of deaths associated with poverty. Researchers propose that poverty requires serious consideration as a major risk for death in the US.
The UCR community rallies behind the street ven- dor who was unjustly removed from campus
AMARAY ALVAREZ Opinions EditorA video that went viral two weeks ago featuring a street vendor being kicked off of UC Riverside campus has led the campus community to rally in support of the woman affected. In the video, which was mainly reposted through TikTok and Instagram, UCR Vice Chancellor of Planning, Budget and Administration, Gerry Bomotti, is seen telling a woman fruit vendor that she must leave the campus and that she is not permitted to sell there. The video, captured by a UCR student, resulted in an uproar of backlash from several campus organizations and has garnered support for the vendor who shall remain unnamed to protect her identity.
Following the viral video, a statement was released by MECHA de UCR condemning the incident and requesting an apology from Vice Chancellor Bomotti. Students also went to his office asking why he removed the vendor. Although the campus is public property and the vendor did have a permit, they were not authorized by the school resulting in the request to leave.
Many students, however, felt that her removal was an attack on the Latine community and was uncalled for as she was not harming anyone, but simply trying to support herself and her family. Vice Chancellor Bomotti has not yet responded to the statement or apologized for his actions.
“It’s enraging and annoying. Admin knows we’re out here, we’re literally outside of Hinderaker Hall. It’s not right that they’re just brushing this off,” said Gabriel Astilleros, a 3rd-year sociology law and society and Spanish major, as well as a member of MECHA.
Other similar incidents have occurred in Riverside with the city also previously making a post criticizing street vendors claiming that their services are unclean. In years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, food trucks and vendors were commonly seen around campus and utilized by students and staff. Today it is rare to see any vendors at UCR, instead they are further out around the nearby shopping centers and less accessible to those on campus.
On Wednesday April 19, MECHA organized a fruit sell out for the vendor starting at 11 A.M. until the vendor sold out. A long line was seen with about 80 to 100 students constantly present. The original woman vendor, along with another cart operated by a man, were present to meet the high demand. Speaking to students in line, many waited an hour to an hour and a half, but did not mind knowing the cause was important and that their wait would be worthwhile. Campus groups including MECHA, PODER, Baile folklórico, Latino Union, Basic Needs, Greek life and the general student body were all present to back the street vendor.
“We came to support our local Riverside vendors. I’m from LA and I’m used to seeing vendors and supporting them,” said 4th-year psychology major and Marketing Chair for Latino Union, Valeria Alvarado Flores.
“I was shocked by the video and that this happened at UCR. I’ve always felt that we were diverse and seeing the vendor kicked out in a disrespectful way was eerie. I came to show support and that the community stands together.”
Throughout the event, Vice Chancellor Bomotti, nor anyone else from campus administration or security, came out to speak to the vendor or those present. Since then, the original vendor and others have remained around the campus and have no longer been asked to leave. The amount of love and gratitude that the campus community has shown the vendor and others from similar backgrounds and experiences is heartwarming and a message to administration that incidents like this will not be taken lightly.

Elections Director faces heavy criticism
The Senate pushes to redo the elections after determining the elections were faulty due to several errors made by the elections committee.
HARU CHANG AND ABHIJIT REGE Assistant News Editor and News EditorThe third Senate Meeting of the quarter was called to order at 7:03 PM. All Senators were present except CHASS Senator Jules Yang, CHASS Senator Alex Lu, CNAS Senator Kyle Cheng, and CNAS Senator Brenden Cano. CHASS Senator Andrew Bui, CHASS Senator Brandon Huang, and BCOE Senator Chloe Au were late to the meeting. All ECAB members were present as well except VP of Campus Internal Affairs Nassar, Transfer Student Director Shelton, and Personnel Director Ahluwalia.
After approving the agenda and the previous meeting minutes the senate opened the podium for the public forum. Connor, a 3rd-year student, approached the senate with an app proposal to help student organizations make online connections with the student body and make club events more accessible online. EVP Usmani recommended sending an email with a presentation and to prepare to present the idea formally at the next meeting.
The Elections Director Trinh entered the meeting at 7:09 PM. Angel Renteria, the relations director for ASUCR external affairs, approached the podium to discuss several issues with the election results. Angel spoke on personal concerns as a student about the numerous errors in the election processes: including unaccounted votes, unclear instructions on the ballots, and inadequate voter turnout which hit a low of approximately 10%. Miss Simpson from the residential hall association noted that a lot of students were unaware about the election, and some did not receive ballots.
According to the Elections Director, the only votes that were miscounted were the Monday CNAS votes, CNAS Sen. Camilia Mohamed was not included on the ballot, the original votes were lost in order to resend and confirm votes. However, CNAS Sen. Shukan Shah and multiple people during the meeting noted that they didn’t receive the notice or multiple notices about re-sent votes within an adequate time frame to reasonably confirm the votes. The Election Director did not refer to the Elections Code instead confided in administrators Amy and Mayan, however both admin and ballot techs had limited access to the ballots. The Elections Director also reported difficulties with the elections site. According to the Elections Director, the administration had the most control over the votes. PPT Aalani Richardson confirmed with Brenden O’Brien about whether or not the Elections Code had specific instructions on voiding votes. O’Brien noted that there is a lack of directions for such procedures and advised the senate to consider new bylaws that would address similar issues moving forward.

107 CNAS votes were voided, leaving only 17 votes to represent CNAS. President Assaf, Sen. Shah, and Sen. Mohamed expressed disappointment in the Elections Director and with the way the elections process was handled. PPT Richardson clarified that, while they were familiar with technical errors that previous elections directors have faced, the errors observed from Elections Director Trinh were identified as human errors made in the information provided on the ballots, communication errors, as well as organizational errors made in preparation for the elections. PPT Richardson also noted that there was an effort to aid the Elections Director. However, the relevant information about the elections process that was organized by the PPT committee was not reviewed by Trinh. Several students, senators and ECAB members called for a revote. The assembly moved to dissolve the involvement of Elections Director Trinh from the new elections or at least have oversight from administration.
President Assaf encouraged a motion to make the election result and committee for 2023 invalid. After confirming with the senate PPT Richardson motioned for a new 2023-24 ASUCR elections to address the errors that need to be corrected under a elections committee and director that are oversighted by qualified members. While the motion passed 5-0-2, the motion requires 2 out of 3 student government bodies, either from the Judicial or the Elections Committee, before the new election is fully approved.
During the Ex-Officio Reports, Chief Justice Arias reported that Law Week went successfully and surpassed last year’s turnout. Judicial will be focused on finding a candidate for VPDEI. The Chief Justice raised concerns about the lack of violation reports made by the elections committee after hearing about several unreported violations. There will be a search for a new Chief Justice elect earlier than usual because Arias will be stepping down from her role early due to personal reasons. PPT Richardson asked for clarifications about the current violations strikes would affect candidates in the new elections processes. Candidates are allowed to appeal the strike, however, the Judicial court will have final say to determine if the strike will be revoked. Assuming that the new elections are approved by a second government body, candidates can expect to re-campaign. The new elections will be held online in order, rendering posters useless, to make the elections fair for candidates who cannot afford to buy more posters.
The EVP announced that Sen. Cano has resigned from his position due to his commitments to military training. His position is now open. In order to end the senate meeting in a timely manner, the State of the Association was tabled to next week’s senate meeting.
As part of committee reports, two pieces of legislation were discussed and passed. A motion to open senate resolutions, SR-S23-001 Menstrual Product Resolution, was called by Sen. Elkatat and seconded by Sen. Mohammed. As described by PPT. Richardson, the resolution called for a greater availability of menstrual products for students on campus. Sen. Barman, a primary author of this piece of legislation, discussed the statistics of how difficult it is for students’ to access menstrual products at UCR and noted how our university should follow Assembly Bill 367. After an amendment to add secondary authors was passed, the legislation passed 13-0-0.
Senate Bill, SB-S23-002 VPDEI Disability Rights and Awareness Committee Enactment, established a new committee, Disability Rights and Awareness committee, under the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. SPP Sen. Nguyen expressed concerns that the legislation may need to be tabled given the current state of our elections, however, PPT Richardson, Sen. Shah, and Sen. Hunt clarified that the legislation will stand in queue for consideration by the next senate. With a friendly amendment, the bill was passed 13-0-0.
In addition to legislation, Finance Hearing Minutes were reviewed as part of committee reports. Notably, Finance Hearing Minutes #3 saw the Black Student Union receiving an Event Grant and Black Cultural Fair that will take place on May 28th and Finance Hearing Minutes #4 saw Pro-staff Amy Carizzosa requesting an Exception for the use of Outreach Funds. Both Hearing Minutes were approved 13-0-0.
For roundtable announcements, Sen. Elkatat is planning an event with the Middle Eastern Student Committee event. Sen Mido is Trying to plan an event for next week and has worked with Afghan refugees in Riverside. Sen. Barman noted that it was Denim Day, and collaborated with CARE for care kits. Sen. Nguyen registered for a CalFresh event that will take place Wednesday May, the 24th. Sen. Shah announced that the South Asian Federation is having a cultural show coming soon and Sen. Huang announced that the CSA is having a cultural fair this Saturday. PPT Richardson announced that she is currently planning the R’Gear distribution and reminded the senate to have legislation to be submitted to her before 9am on Fridays. The meeting was adjourned at 10:13 P.M.

The GOP’s new tactic to suppress voting for the left by targeting college students is another feeble attempt to skew upcoming elections
Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Republicans have already begun trying to find ways to suppress votes for the left. By once again using false claims of voter fraud, America’s youth, specifically those who are college students, are the current demographic being persecuted. In a recent Nashville GOP fundraising event, a presentation titled, “A Level Playing Field for 2024,” was given by lawyer and Republican political activist Cleta Mitchell, where calls to limit voting on college campuses were proproposed. In another effort to skew the vote towards the right, the GOP has exposed how it is threatened by education and the upcoming generations through their unjust targeting of college student voters.
In the presentation given, Mitchell criticized the way in which most college campuses conduct their in-person and early ballot voting. The main criticisms involved the ease in which students are able to vote. Preparing ballots early for mail-in voting, using student IDs as a form of identification and being able to vote at a location near dorms were cited as reasons why Mitchell and others felt that the process was oversimplified and allowed more votes for the left. Instead of working to make the right appeal more to college voters, the main objective seemed to be limiting and preventing these votes from even taking place, exposing a fear of those who are educated. They are actively denying the public a safe opportunity to participate in democracy.

In past months, the GOP has been active in persecuting education and trying to approve educational plans that favor their
ideals. Through the banning of books labeled as “inappropriate” that often just feature content dealing with race and sexuality, the right is working to brainwash the next generation into believing what they want them to. A 2016 study by PEW Research Center found that highly educated adults, particularly those who have attended graduate school, are far more likely than those with less education to take predominantly liberal positions across a range of political values. The attacks on education are not to protect the youth, but rather to limit their freedom of critical thought and expression.
The rhetoric and ideas proposed at this event are harmful not only for the youth, but to other demographics that the right may want to target next. Instead of college voters, an ethnic group could be inserted and “blamed” for the reason why recent elections have favored Democrats. Leveling the playing field should mean providing more polling places and voter literacy so that each side has an equal chance at gaining support. Republicans, however, would rather resort to unethical voting tactics and blaming Democrats for submitting false votes. The matter of fact is, there is no proof of large scale voter fraud in the country and no one demographic is abusing the system. To help prevent these ideas from taking place, there needs to be legislative action to fight voter suppression and protect these vulnerable votes.

Biden’s re-election campaign threatens to split the Democratic vote

Biden officially announced his re-election campaign last week. Currently, three candidates are running for president out of the Democratic party. Aside from Biden, Democratic candidates include Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It’s unlikely that either candidate will win the Democratic nomination over Biden. However, there is one primary contestant who was likely to receive it, had Biden not elected to launch his own campaign.
Marianne Williamson announced her campaign for the 2024 election before either one of her Democratic competitors, despite indication that Biden would be running for re-election. Williamson has been steadily campaigning on TikTok since she announced. This is a controversial decision, especially considering the recent controversy about the platform in the news and the fact that neither of
her competitors even owns a public TikTok account. However, among the three, Williamson appears to be the most dedicated to connecting and advertising to younger voters.
Younger voters seem to be the demographic that Williamson is targeting, and it’s not hard to see why. Most of her concerns and stances align with most young voters. This is the same group of people Biden disappointed with his decision to approve the Willow project, despite protests that included more than 1 million letters received by the White House and over 3 million signatures on a change.org petition which followed a fierce TikTok-based social campaign. All this indicates that younger voters, especially Gen Z, are more likely to put their weight behind Williamson in the primary. But, this may prove to be an all-or-nothing kind of situation.
As voters realised during the 2016 election,
sometimes it’s best to go with a lesser of two evils. If Democratic voters are split between two choices and neither candidate can garner the kind of national support necessary in 2020, then the numbers might not be able to match up to the dedicated followers of the Trump campaign. While there is no guarantee as of yet that he will be running for the Republican party, Trump does still hold a vocal following of people eager to return him to office.
The bottom line is this: Trump holds a dedicated following and somewhat widespread Republican support. With Biden and Williamson competing for the Democratic vote, there is a substantial risk of a 2016 repeat. Democratic voters will need to agree on and throw their support behind a single candidate if they hope to win the coming election. ■ H
Fox’s Tucker Carlson gets the boot
AYLIN MORENO Contributing WriterThe face of fake news and Fox’s Trump era has finally been dismissed. “Fox News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to mutually part ways,” Fox News announced. Tucker Carlson has been with Fox News since Nov. 14, 2016. He was a subsequent replacement for Bill O’Reilly who was fired due to a series of sexual assault allegations. Carlson was a ticking time bomb – his downfall was imminent. His show was often laced with racist remarks and anti-semitic comments that worried even the heads of Fox. While his rhetoric seemed popular amongst far-right viewers, his racist and misogynistic attitudes inside and outside the studio littered road blocks for legitimate journalists everywhere.
The Dominion defamation lawsuit was the last straw; a case in which several, now redacted, text messages were publicized. Carlson called a senior executive the c-word and admits his passionate hatred for Trump, although he’s cheered him on faithfully since day one. Jonathan Greenblatt, director of the anti-defamation league, ADL, tweeted “It’s about time. For far too long, Carlson has used his primetime
show to spew antisemitic, racist, xenophobic and antiLGBTQ hate to millions.”
Just last month, Carlson was a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Abby Grossberg. Grossberg says, to MSNBC, “I knew as a female I would never get the executive producer title, The opportunity came up to go to Tucker. It was a promotion.” However, she also comments on Carlson making her life “a living hell.” She comments to Rolling Stone of the “frat-style culture” within Tucker Carlson Tonight. Grossberg felt she was punished for speaking out against, what she called, a “bro-fest.” She was shut down, left out of meetings, and eventually demoted. Abby Grossberg’s lawyers describe her firing as retaliatory. This inner depiction of Tucker Carlson only makes his firing that much sweeter – someone so used to demoralizing women and anyone working alongside him deserves nothing but contempt.

Carlson has quite the repertoire when it comes to the fabrication of news stories that align with his political beliefs. Even if these stories defame marginalized people. One such conspiracy he
fashioned was the FBI’s involvement in the Capitol attack of January 6. According to Abby Grossberg, Tucker had it in his head that an FBI agent was placed in the crowd and was responsible for the insurrection. This irresponsible broadcasting and contribution to further doubt in the Fourth Estate is one of the many reasons Tucker Carlson deserved the boot.
These occurrences are just a few recent debacles in the midst of years-long journalistic wrongdoings committed by Tucker Carlson. Only now, in the wake of the Dominion case, can viewers of news media outlets understand the gravity of Carlson’s journalistic malpractice. His stories have hurt marginalized groups and spun stories to fit his personal beliefs without regard for basic journalistic standards or the truth. However, while Tucker Carlson may have been the face of these fiascos, it is up to Fox News to clean up their ac. Being a prime-time host of a network should not absolve anyone of consequences no matter the amount of revenue cashed in for the network and their owners.■ H

New federal rules limiting sugar in school lunches attempts to undo the damage done by the sugar industry

BETTER NUTRITION STANDARDS FOR CHILDREN TO TAKE EFFECT IN 2025-2026.
YSABEL NAKASONE Assistant Opinions EditorThe first limits on added sugar in school meals were just announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this past February. The goal is to reduce added sugars to less than 10% total calories per week by the start of the 2027 academic year. These new rules will also limit sodium content. These new guidelines are overdue after years of work by the sugar industry to prevent such an outcome.
These changes are necessary after years of ignoring the role of sugar in childhood obesity. The sugar industry has invested time and resources into deceiving the public. During the 1960s, a literature review did untold damage by blaming heart disease on fat content instead of sugar for cardiac disease and other negative health effects. The study ignored sound research for arbitrary reasons that seemed like they were drawn out of
thin air.
The study was funded by the sugar industry, a fact that was not disclosed anywhere in the review. The reasoning for this deception was said to be that the standards for transparency in the scientific community did not dictate a disclosure. Research published in legitimate journals has the power to shape scientific conversation, and this paper did just that.
Because of research such as this and the influence of the sugar lobby, nutrition standards favored a low fat content without regulating sugar intake. Over 90% of school breakfasts had a calorie content of at least 10% added sugar, while almost 70% served lunches with a calorie content of at least 10% added sugar. This is a longterm and widespread issue.
The harm done by high sugar content school meals can’t be
understated. Since the 1970s, the number of youths who have been affected by obesity has tripled. The limited budget schools have to feed children, and ineffective recommendations are a driving force behind childhood obesity. Furthermore, school lunches are a major source of nutrition for some children, specifically those living in food deserts.
There’s no way to fully quantify how much of an impact industryfunded research and the far-reaching efforts of the sugar lobby have had on federal nutritional guidelines, but it is extensive. These new nutritional guidelines are a step toward addressing the sugar addiction that has been pushed onto students since the 1960s.
The unlikely legalization of marijuana would do wonders for the economy

Many growers are being forced to either liquidate or turn to the black market for a chance at turning profits. Federal legalization of marijuana is the best solution for these growers. With the current affairs of Congress, many find this unfeasible and are hoping for the legalization of marijuana trade between legalized states. This bill would require President Biden to do something productive. Still, it would allow the West Coast to supply the rest of the country, thus removing the financial burden on growers and bolstering the economy.
Lawmakers in Washington, Oregon and California, the country’s top marijuana producers, in anticipation of the Justice Department’s new marijuana policies, approved a “trigger bill.” This bill authorizes the
government to begin the interstate cannabis trade, should the federal government allow for it. Washington and Colorado, spearheading the road to legalization, have stricter regulations on their markets in comparison to the bolstering markets of California and Oregon. The current market presents the probable dominance of West Coast weed growers in the interstate market.
Washington and Oregon, the first to legalize marijuana in 2012, were forced to make concessions to the Department of Justice. Washington cannabis producers are banned from accepting “out-of-state investments,” and growers have facility size restrictions preventing them from expanding the industry.

California’s lax regulations have allowed for the legal weed market to thrive within the state and will likely give them an edge within the interstate market. Washington weed is also amongst the most heavily
taxed cannabis in the country, raking in over half a billion dollars in government funds.
Oregon producers face similar issues from government regulations on weed production. TJ Sheehy stated that “Cannabis in Oregon is like corn in Iowa,” forcing Iowa corn growers to only sell corn within their borders would kill Iowa producers. Oregon cannabis growers are in “an existential crisis,” possessing 3 million pounds of excess marijuana, the nation’s worst oversupply. Without the legalization of interstate commerce, Oregon’s hundreds of licensed growers will continue to lose. For Oregon’s recreational users, this surplus has drastically decreased the price of weed, with a pound that once went for upwards of $3,000 now costing anywhere between $100-$300.■ H

End Overdose - Harm Reduction Is In, Drug Stigmas Are Out!
BOBBI MANDOUR Contributing WriterBased in Los Angeles, the non-profit organization, End Overdose, exists to promote harm reduction and prevent opioid overdose. On campus, UCR’s chapter strives to cultivate a safer culture surrounding drug use by providing free overdose response training to other student organizations, and by distributing free fentanyl test strips every Wednesday at the Belltower. According to Ruchi Shetti, one of the organization’s members, “By having conversations surrounding mental health, addiction and overdoses, students can exist in a safer space both on campus and off campus just by becoming more educated about substance use.”
End Overdose is an open space to provide resources and information to anyone - and they respect your anonymity and safety above all else. On a college campus, organizations that promote harm reduction are important because opioid overdose deaths are one of the main leading causes in the deaths of people from ages 18-45. “This group, which consists of college students, is uniquely vulnerable,” says Ruchi, “and around 42 percent of drugs that are tested come up positive containing opioids like fentanyl.”
Because of this, End Overdose provides judgment-free accessibility to naloxone (Narcan) and fentanyl test strips to ensure that even college parties can become safer spaces for people who are, at the end of the day, adults making their own decisions.
In an effort to maintain realistic expectations, EO stresses the importance of preventative measures to opioid overdose rather than shaming the use of drugs in general. UCR’s chapter of End Overdose has even been recognized by major event organizers, like Insomniac Events, where student members got to attend festivals like Beyond Wonderland and Countdown to provide free and fast trainings to event goers to promote education on how to save a life in a drug-related emergency using overdosereversing medications, as well as promoting testing drugs before taking them.

March 19, 2023 marked UC Riverside’s first ever Blossom Fest. The indie and rock festival, aimed at showcasing new up and coming artists from across California featured the artistic talents of BEL, Sir, Please and DWLLRS. Along with food, merch, performances from UCR’s dance clubs, and of course, flowers, the festival is a great opportunity to enjoy a break from school and listen to good music. With so much to offer, Blossom Fest is set to become a treasured annual event.
The first musical act was BEL, aka Isabel Whelan from Clovis, California, whose music bridges “the intersection of indie, pop, and folk” (@aspb_ucr). BEL performed her two singles “Are You Okay?” and “Woman on Fire.” She was the perfect start to an indie music festival with slow and almost moody music key to the indie music genre. While BEL lamented the fact that she only had an acoustic guitar to play her music, this instrument perfectly set the mood for her music and crooning performance. BEL led the crowd in a mini along by asking the audience to help
her sing the chorus and put the audience in the mood to continue enjoying the concert.
Sir, Please describe themselves as a band of four best friends from Agoura Hills, California. Sir, Please captured the attention of all by an intriguing introduction to their band before beginning to play, citing that the origins of their band are a mystery that all have tried and failed to uncover, and that their band is dedicated to making funk history and getting their revenge. Kicking off their set with their song “Different,” they showcased their talent at creating music with a distinct beachy vibe and almost dreamlike quality.
During a brief technical difficulty, Sir, Please entertained the crowd with the familiar and well loved “Here Comes the Sun,” delivering a delightful tribute to the Beatles.
Sir, Please played other songs including “Holding You Like You’re Mine” and “Win Me Over,” their newest single. Towards the end of their set, Sir, Please led the audience into a dance with their aptly named song “Dance With Me.” With incredible charisma and stage presence between the four best best friends, Sir,
joined the organization because of its progressive approach to caring for the lives of our student body at UCR. She is also passionate about making an impact on reducing the amounts of traumatic events people experience in their youth. “We don’t encourage drug use, but we do encourage education about using drugs safely because the intersectionality between mental health, substance abuse and death is important to be blunt about - it’s important to keep people educated and aware.”
You can find End Overdose on Wednesdays tabling at the Belltower, where they provide a judgment-free zone to ask questions, obtain free fentanyl test strips, and free merch! On May 10, the organization will host a public training pop-up at the Belltower to show students how to use naloxone and testing strips. End Overdose strives to make a difference in student lives, especially ahead of major campus events like Spring Splash.

DWLLRS, a musical duo consisting of Bren Eissman and Joey Spurgeon are from San Clemente, California, and have been greatly inspired by artists such as Frank Ocean, Brockhampton and Tame Impala, and their music consists of themes such as “existentialism, nostalgia and heartbreak” with an undercurrent of hope. Like Sir, Please, DWLLRS had an underlying element of surf rock to their music which paired excellently with the slight rapping in their music. DWLLRS kept up the upbeat tempo that Sir, Please had left with and the audience was dancing and singing along to all of their songs.
Blossom Fest was an incredible music festival hosted by UCR to support up and coming artists. If you did not have a chance to make it to Blossom Fest this year, make sure to go next year. And if you liked Blossom Fest, make sure to tell ASPB UCR so that a festival like that can continue to occur. ■ H
Choosing to be single is NOT the new Scarlet Letter
THRISTINE M. MAGALLANES Contributing WriterHave you ever felt like something’s off when everyone gets in relationships, but you? Let me tell you: it’s not bad. While the hopeless romantic in us does wish for a certain someone to change our lives for the better, there’s some good that can come out of it. Choosing to be single in a culture where everyone is constantly scrambling for a partner gives us more time to do things we’ve never done before. New movie you want to see? Buy the ticket. Fancy a dinner with yourself? Treat yourself.
The point is that there is nothing wrong with choosing to be single in this day and age. I’ve been single for a couple years now; it really is an opportunity to make the world your oyster. I can go on and on, spewing the classic sayings of ‘love yourself first before you can love another,’ but it goes a lot deeper than that. It’s an opportunity to get to know yourself more, and what you desire for yourself. What are some of the qualities you truly look for in a partner? Are you emotionally mature enough to handle the hard situations that come with a relationship? A relationship is a 50/50 even split where both sides have to put in the same amount of effort in order to try and best help your partner. I do realize there are certain circumstances that can’t be resolved easily, but it’s all a gradual work in progress that requires effort from both parties. Most relationships begin to crumble because

they lack a strong foundation set by effort or the gradual lack thereof. Once you become comfortable with your partner, effort starts to decrease and soon, issues start to arise. It’s important to communicate your problems clearly to prevent further conflict.
Communicating what you want and need should extend outside romantic relationships. A lot of the building blocks that form a relationship are simple people skills that are applicable to the real world. While there may be no official rulebook when it comes to dating and relationships, I will say this: don’t leap before you look. We, as a society, constantly think that we have to abide by the social norms that others have set for us. So, in a state of panic, we leap into a relationship without even being prepared for the toll it’ll take. Staying single to help develop these skills would also help to minimize the endless cycle of hurt that’s become prevalent amongst our peers. They say ‘hurt people hurt people,’ and they are right. Just because one person hurt you, doesn’t make it right to emotionally hurt the next person who wants to try and establish a connection with you. ■ H

LA Times Festival of Books: literary fun for everyone
EVELYN HOMAN Managing EditorMy trip to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books was pretty last-minute. My professor alerted me to its existence, and that it was the very weekend that was coming up. So I cobbled together a plan to go with my friend (who, luckily for me, knew the metro system of LA very well) and see what was to be seen at the festival. Once we had transferred over to the E Line to Expo Park at USC, we were surrounded by fellow public transporters who were very eager to get to the fair. My friend Sam and I were fi rst-timers, so we were not sure what to expect other than there would be books, books, books.
Upon arriving, we overheard someone promise that this was the “Coachella of books,” and they were not lying. Everywhere we looked, there was an author signing, a local bookshop booth and various publishers putting themselves on display for the public to be made aware of them. There was a large stage in the approximate center of all the activity where a jazz band was playing as we came in, and a rotating cast of other acts throughout the day.
Although our last-minute decision to come meant that we did not get to see any of the author panels that the Festival is quite well known for, we still had plenty to do as average folks just walking in. There were booths upon booths upon booths, and in everyone that we stopped at, a friendly person told us about their literary magazine, publishing mission or books.
My friend and I spent an hour at the Pathfi nder press’ booth discussing unfair railroad conditions, and even being quoted for their socialist newspaper for workingclass people, ‘The Militant.’
One thing that was most wonderful about the festival was the number of independent authors and presses that were there. PM Press, a publisher of punk rock literature and wonderful feminist nonfiction (which had me sold immediately — I bought three books), was another spot where we found ourselves spending time at. Numerous booths had independent authors signing their books there, and still other booths were collectives of independent authors sharing their work.
For those who might not want to spend a lot of money on new books, there was also a huge collection of shelves full of used books at the far corner of the festival, where my friend and I stocked up on many $4 paperbacks. In the distance was another stage where authors were doing readings, one of which was a book for children that led to much youthful laughter from the crowd. There was a section at the entrance we went through as well for children, and a handful of booths of children’s authors as well so the little ones had something to enjoy as well.
The fun did not end there; while waiting in line for an overpriced buffalo chicken wrap ($23, it was tiny, and the truck did not have prices posted anywhere),
a golf cart taking authors to one of the panel events ended up getting stuck right next to our line, and that’s how I ended up sharing air with the incomparable Roxane Gay for about five minutes while the tram got unstuck. I was a star-struck mess throughout the whole ordeal. It was all but a religious experience, only rivaled in glory by the LA Public Library booth, where both my friend and I got the holy grail of all library cards.
In a country that is continuing to challenge the human right to literature, the LA Times Book Festival was a beautiful space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together to celebrate literature, authors and reading. It was a real treat to speak with fellow book lovers, with independent and volunteerrun presses and support independent purveyors of books across the board and scoring some absolutely amazing literature in the process. Even if you’re not a book person, the festival really has something for everyone, whether it’s the sumptuously regal USC campus, the author panels, or the lively people publishing a variety of amazing books. Go next year, bring your family, bring your kids and support the thriving community of literature in a nation that needs it now more than ever.

The Aggrolites reignite Riverside spirit at The Barn
BRENDA JOVEL Radar EditorThe Barn opened its doors on Apr. 20 for a night of music with friends and family as part of its fi rst paid ticketed concert. Patrons gathered inside to order their food and drinks as the tunes of old-school tracks hung in the evening air from DJ Quiñones’ nifty playlist.

Soon enough, MC Junor Francis took over to welcome the audience into an evening of enthralling music from great performers.
Francis greeted Chris Murray onstage, the event’s opener, who quickly eased the audience into a night of dancing and singalongs with his acoustic guitar. Expressing their gratitude and reminiscing on being back at The Barn before their set began, Murray said, “[It’s] my pleasure to be here. [It’s] my fi rst time here at the new Barn and thanks for having me.”
Known for focusing on the genre of ska, a music genre originating from Jamaica, Murray sang “Rock Steady” as his fi rst track. Its foot-tapping beat along with Murray’s raspy voice created a pleasurable atmosphere.
Though there was a small turnout at the start of the event, Murray encouraged everyone to hit up the dance floor with his songs. The mood transformed into a happier setting as more people settled outside and cheered with the singer’s energetic personality.
The Barn’s lights soon flooded the night sky as thumps of drums reverberated off the ground, welcoming The Aggrolites, the night’s headliner. The dance stage became fi lled with excited fans that welcomed the band back to UCR. The Aggrolites had performed at the old Barn years back, and it was fulfi lling to see its members rejoice in seeing the renovated venue.
“Riverside make some noise!” Jesse Wagner, the band’s lead guitarist, shouted.
“How we doin’ tonight?” The audience cheered in response before Wagner thanked them for joining their night of fun.
The group’s tantalizing sounds were heard in songs like “Don’t Let Me Down” and most of all, “Countryman Fiddle,” a playful track that Wagner sang with passion and soul. Roger Rivas, the group’s pianist, shined during this track as he excellently played the fast-paced rhythm to audience members.
The Aggrolites have come a far way in their musical career, and their enigmatic “Banana” song from “Yo Gabba Gabba!” was a must-see that night. “This is for the kids out there,” Wagner said before diving into the children’s song that had all the adults swinging their hips.
The night ended with a fi nal conjoined performance with The Aggrolites and DJ Quiñones. Quiñones’ smooth vocals in “Don’t Let Me Down” was a tranquil way to end a night of joyful music and interactive performances.
The Highlander sat down with Senior Manager, Moses Preciado, and Manager of The Barn and Events, Patricia Ramos on a previous Thursday afternoon. Preciado, who had been asked to lead the renovation of The Barn this year, explained the process of fi nding different artists. “In short, we are experimenting with a lot of different genres. Funk, rap, reggae and student performers. We have a talent buyer who is in tune with the local community and helps us with the selection process to invite bands,” Preciado said.
Ramos, who has been working a little over three years at The Barn expressed their desire in wanting the restaurant to evolve as a center where paid concerts could take place, both for UCR students and Riverside community members. Though both free and paid events require
entry tickets, Ramos noted that the sales of this event’s tickets were being monitored a bit more as they were worried that ticket sales would be low. Fortunately, ticket sales rose the night before the event which left Ramos and Preciado satisfied with the turnout.
The Riverside community, in particular, expressed their excitement about the event after hearing that The Aggrolites would be performing once again. Preciado and Ramos explained that the band’s lead singer, Jesse Wagner, had previously performed at The Barn with various bands before fi nding The Aggrolites. From then on, the band performed during the 80s and 90s at The Barn, and as a way to reminisce, several community members stepped back on UCR grounds to see one of their favorite groups.

“This specific event’s biggest draw was the Riverside community,” Preciado said. Ramos further added, “Someone flew in from another state. We had another person come from Bakersfield. There was a burst of people coming and [they were] happy to see the openers and most of all, the Headliner.”
“I’d like to add beyond the events we plan on hosting, [we are] open from 11-8 P.M. for lunch and dinner. [We have a] large menu from burgers to salads to sandwiches. In addition to hosting events, we’re a restaurant too,” Preciado said.
“And the bar is open as well from 12:308 P.M. Monday through Friday. [There is] alcohol available to those who can partake. The UCR Citrus Beer is brewed exclusively at UCR,” Ramos added.

Based on true events, “Love and Death” brings this crime story back on a new streaming platform. Despite the case of Candy Montgomery being told on the Hulu show “Candy” last year, HBO decided to produce its version of the story. The show takes on a different creative approach to the series as it tries to look at the case from a different perspective. The first three episodes premiered on HBO Max on May 27 with new episodes to follow each Thursday.
Set in the small town of Wylie, Texas, the show follows the true story of Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) being accused of brutally killing her friend and lover’s wife Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) with an ax. The first three episodes review the two years from 1978 to 1980 leading up to Betty Gore’s death.
The show follows churchgoers and seemingly normal typical suburban lives. However, after Candy has a moment running into fellow churchgoer Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), she proposes to start an affair with him. After going back and forth on some rules, the two start the affair by meeting in a cheap motel. During the affair, the duo ends up liking one another’s company and the time spent together. However, Allan eventually calls off the affair, wanting to care for his wife who struggles with anxiety and suspicions of the two. The three-
Although the episode’s main highlights are the development of the story and the actors’ performances, it does struggle in some aspects of the show in which it can be slow and fail to explore other interesting outlets. The show is slow when there are various conversations between characters. It would be more beneficial to show the actions rather than convey them in conversation. These actions include demonstrating scenes rather than discussing what happens between characters.
An interesting aspect that the show has yet to explore would be looking more into Betty, the victim. While it touches on some aspects of her life that audiences can sympathize with, it would be intriguing to delve into her anxiety and suspicions that would eventually lead to her murder. This can add more depth to her character and add more layers rather than focusing on Candy and her affair.
With the show’s title being “Love and Death,” the series’ premiere handles the love aspects of the story as the rest of the show will deal with death. The first few episodes feel like any other typical drama show. However, with the knowledge of what the show is about, there is a foreboding sense of what is to come. This creates a level of tension that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats and engaged in the show. Despite Candy and Allen not wanting to cause any trouble or hurt their spouses, their plan still causes many issues.
While the first three episodes focus on building the plot and setting before delving into the case, the audience needs to understand the characters and their stories before the case. The audience can see perspectives from both Candy and Betty and feel sympathy for both women. While the murder has not yet been committed in the first episodes, the show helps to build up toward the big moment as secrets are uncovered.
The biggest highlight of this show is the performance of the actors, most notably Elizabeth Olsen. With her spectacular performance of Candy, she is convincing in her outwardly bubbly and welcoming demeanor with a darker and mysterious inner personality. It is an eerie performance that only enhances the show and displays Olsen’s acting range. While the audience has yet to see the darker side of Olsen until the latter episodes, there are hints throughout the first episodes that allude to the hidden layers of her character. Additionally, Rabe and Krysten Ritter, portraying Sherry Cleckler, give wonderful performances as well that add to the chemistry between the actors.
Verdict:
“Love and Death” is a typical crime drama miniseries, which thrills audiences at various points but also lacks in exploring the different perspectives of the case’s victims.

Florence Welch’s consistent vocal evolution makes ‘Mermaids’ a welcome treat to fans

Besides her innate songwriting talent, Florence Welch’s unbounded, esoteric expressivity always manages to shine through on every project. Whether it be from her physical soul-stirring movement in the visual accompaniment of the “Florence + The Machine” 2015 album, “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful,” “The Odyssey” to the grounded vocals of “Ceremonials,” Welch’s talent knows no bounds. She is a personal artist at her core, and this single reaffirms her ability to craft personal pathos into ethereal soundscapes.
The band’s most recent album, “Dance Fever,” perhaps features the most distinct identity of their work yet. Gothic fiction and folk horror elements are at the heart of the project, with both the dark and light sides of each respectively weaving their influence on the tracklist. “Mermaids,” released on Apr. 21, is only featured on the deluxe version of the album, but slots right into the overarching theme and tone perfectly.
The dichotomy created by the aforementioned sides is best alluded to through Welch’s referencing of her home country. “England is only ever grey or green
/ The girls glitter striding glorious and coatless in the rain / I remember falling through these streets / Somewhat out of place, if not for the drunkenness.” Beauty is somehow found within the omnipresent gloom of rainfall. Welch’s lyrics coincide with her personal experiences; her wide-ranging vocal capabilities only enrich the plethora of subjects that are touched upon.
Nature and its ever-changing state are juxtaposed with the underlying themes alluding to Welch’s pain on her path to sobriety. The repeated phrase “Cheerful oblivion” sums up this feeling, emphasizing the safety of performing on stage presents. This escape would not be possible without the embrace of all of life’s struggles, a wonderful ode to how solace can be found where it is least expected.
However, this time is short. The mythical nature of mermaids is compared to a fleeting feeling, with each only presenting themselves following a physical act of sacrifice. “And the mermaids, they come once a year / They climb the struts of Brighton Pier / They come to drink, they come to dance / To sacrifice a human
heart / And the world is so much wilder than you think / You haven’t seen anything till you see an English girl drink.” While the mermaids are beautiful, their act is borne out of harm. This is similar to how addiction promises to temporarily offer a sense of security that only becomes even more unattainable as the cycle repeats.
A shadow-like ambiance arises through the graceful production. The listener is ushered by a celestial choir that steadily increases in volume, eventually serving as backing to an even larger build-up of a graceful blend of incantations. The song’s structure is rather similar to “Delilah” off of her 2015 record, serving as a masterful exercise in pure power that crescendos and fades. Each verse pushes the pendulum back and forth, thereby balancing the album’s overarching concept of the presence of darkness in light. It is because of these simple yet poignant ideas that the band creates such a unique sound, and why they will continue to do so. ■ H

Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated return to the music scene left a salty taste in the mouths of music lovers everywhere. After a six-year hiatus, fans were ecstatic to see Ocean headline Coachella. People lined up hours before his set, eagerly anticipating the performance of their lives. As the section opened, the crowd had multiplied, filling every corner of the floor, and the excitement in the air was palpable.

At long last, the artist emerged onto the stage, an hour later than scheduled. The crowd erupted as he launched into his hit song “Novacane.” For a moment, it seemed as though the show was going to live up to all the hype. Unfortunately, it was not long before things began to go downhill.
Throughout the concert, Frank Ocean spent most of his time hiding behind the stage, leaving fans with just a big screen that displayed recordings of the show. Songs such as “Lost” and “Chanel’’ were performed as remixes that filled up half of the performance. To make matters

Amid his disastrous show, he held a moment with his fans, sharing a personal story about his brother Ryan who had passed away from a car crash in 2020. Ocean expressed his reluctance to perform at Coachella but said that his brother Ryan has always loved going to the festival. At that moment, the undertone of the show shifted, becoming more sympathetic. It felt intimate and personal as the crowd reciprocated his energy.
Despite Frank Ocean’s instance of honesty, this illusioned connection began to fade. The show went on, and the lack of substance and energy became more apparent. The audience began to trickle out of the section. Even worse, the concert abruptly ended, with Frank Ocean’s set cut short to accommodate Coachella’s curfew.
The aftermath of it all shines a negative light onto Frank Ocean. There were a plethora of postings online about his awful performance and people felt scammed due to the amount of time and money they paid. This horrible backlash has gained the attention of other celebrities such as Justin Bieber. He supported Frank Ocean and
Shockingly enough, Frank Ocean had announced that he has dropped out of performing for Weekend Two of Coachella — his excuse being because of a fractured ankle. This left his fans betrayed, as hundreds of people were expecting his presence the following weekend. The band to cover his spot was Blink-182.

In the end, Frank Ocean’s long-awaited return to the music scene left many fans feeling disillusioned. It was a missed opportunity to reconnect with his audience and make a statement with his music. Instead, it was a lackluster performance that failed to live up to the expectations of his fans.
Frank Ocean’s reputation has been shattered and fans are left to pick up the scraps. His career had been set the second he stepped on Coachella’s stage, but his lack of effort and care for his audience displays his true character for the music industry. Frank Ocean is still a great and impactful artist, but his music alone is not enough to satisfy his supporters.■ H

‘Oshi no Ko’ is the hottest new anime series to hit the spring season

“Oshino Ko” has recently surged to the top of anime rankings, claiming the number one spot over supreme, powerhouse anime series like “Fullmetal Alchemist “ and “Attack on Titan: The Final Season.” The show also premieres among gigantic anime series such as “Hell’s Paradise” and “Heavenly Delusion.” Written by the author of the zany and beloved “Love is War,” “Oshi no Ko” gives fans of Aka Akasaka a view into the darker and grittier story that takes an unfiltered look into the entertainment industry. And this all starts with the premiere, a movie-length, episode that grabbed its audience spectacularly.
The premise of the show follows a beloved idol, Ai, who is pregnant with twins. Those twins are revealed to be reincarnated from a previous life, with one twin being her doctor that helped her deliver and one being a cancer patient. Both were fans of her and started on their own respective paths into the idol and movie industry, unveiling the politics and secrets of being a star.
The new number one anime possesses many elements that masterpiece anime have. The first notable aspect of “Oshi no Ko” lies in its fantastic animation. The power of its animation is its mission to imbue the narrative with its art by, animation studio, Doga Kobo. Certain scenes also look like they are painted with watercolor and some contain the bright lights that shine upon idol performances contrasting
For the ears of anime fans, the music made for the Spring idol anime is also notable. While the background music of the anime reaches a satisfactory level, the opening song of the show has reached over 23 million views on Youtube in one week. The song, made by Yoasobi, was crafted especially for the anime series with its lyrics alluding to the corrupt nature of the idol industries and agencies. The actual full-length music video for the song was also created for the anime, featuring its characters and hinting at the dark nature of its story.

The core of the show is in its narrative. Intertwining themes such as idol culture, reincarnation, and murder mystery, the show’s premise captures the fascination of its audience. All the while, the mature and transparent look into the entertainment industry serves as a jumping pad for not only a darker story but also a persistent and unrelenting criticism of its corruption and sense of politics.
The story of the show, while praised by many, has also garnered its criticisms. Many have seen its characters as stereotypical and bland, undermining its uprising to the rank 1 spot. Critics have pointed to that as a source of weakness that makes “Oshi no Ko” undeserving of the spot. What reinforces this opinion is also the fact that the anime series does little to innovate anime as a medium, unlike the thoroughly plotted “Attack on Titan,” or the bold and thought provoking “A Silent Voice.” Bringing no new ideas to the table, the new number one anime seems to rely mostly on its stunning animation and striking premise to elicit hype and attention.
Verdict:
Whether or not it keeps its crown at the top of the anime rankings, the show demonstrates promise through its mature plot and unfiltered look at the lives of content creators, idols and movie stars. With a bold and high-quality premiere, “Oshi no Ko” is a must watch for all anime fans.

Coach Palmer gets 200th career win as softball head coach in rout versus Saint Mary’s
KIANOOSH NOOSHI Assistant Sports EditorOn Tuesday afternoon, Nikki Palmer achieved a significant milestone in her softball career as she picked up her 200th career win. The UC Riverside Highlanders routed Saint Mary’s, 9-1, at the Amy S. Harrison Softball Field in a game where the Highlanders showed their dominance with great performances from various players.
Freshman Jackie Alday had an impressive game, recording her third multi-RBI game of the season and first since March 13. She hit an RBI single into left field to score Nadia Witt and Kat Montuya, who had put the Highlanders on the board after Saint Mary’s go-ahead run in the first inning. Alday later put the game out of reach with a two-run home run in the third inning. This marked a significant achievement for Alday, as she became the first Highlander freshman to record four RBIs in a game since Sarah Parten on March 6, 2017.
Alday and Montuya combined to drive in seven of UCR’s nine runs for the afternoon. Montuya reached on an error in the first inning and slapped a two-run

single into left field in the fourth inning. Nadia Witt also had an impressive game, recording three RBIs against the Gaels. Witt, who only managed to score once in the marathon series against CSUN, was the star player of the game. She went 2 for 2 at the plate with a leadoff double in the third inning that set up a three-run inning for UC Riverside. Rebeca Cabezas also collected a multi-hit outing, going 2 for 3 with a run.
In the pitching department, Brooke Perez threw a complete game in the shortened run-rule contest. She went all five innings with a pair of strikeouts while giving up just three hits. Saint Mary’s found a hole in the first inning for the opening run of the game, but Perez shut down the Gaels with 1-2-3 innings in the second and third to get into her rhythm.
UC Riverside’s win over Saint Mary’s was a dominant performance that showcased the team’s depth and talent. Despite their struggles overall, the Highlanders have performed great at home boasting a 14-10 and have made it difficult for visiting teams to steal a win at the
Amy S. Harrison Field.
Overall, the UC Riverside Highlanders had an excellent day on the field, with a solid performance from their players.
Nikki Palmer’s 200th career win is a testament to her dedication to the program, and the team’s impressive win against Saint Mary’s is a sign that the team can put together dominant performances in their final stretch of games.
