TUMUAKI | PRESIDENT Hi, I'm Luc. Luke with a C. In deciding whether or not to run for president again, I thought about the tremendous support and recognition I've received over the last year. To those of you who remember me, come say hi around campus! But to those of you who aren't familiar with me yet, keep reading! My policies this year are specifically targeted towards saving the backbone of UC. Clubs. Those of you engaged in the over 160 clubs at UC will be happy to hear that clubs are a core part of my presidency campaign. If you are a part of a club, you should seriously consider casting your vote my way. FOR CLUBS: CLUB BUDGET: Those of you in clubs will have realised that funding has run dry already this year. There is no more money available. This is due to poor management from the UCSA and the budget being treated as a free for all. To change this, we are proposing a quarterly budget. Previously, clubs had to rush to get a slice of the pie, whereas now clubs will be better informed on how to spend money efficiently and have fairer access to funding. CLUB STORAGE SPACE: Ever since the 2011 earthquake, clubs have had next to no space for storage. This has made it very difficult for clubs to expand and has hindered projects that would benefit us as students. We are calling for action from the university. UC flaunts its social life which is upheld by clubs themselves, so having crucial growth be cut off is unacceptable. We are in the process of drafting an open letter to the university, asking for better support for club storage to allow more breathing room for already struggling clubs. Keep an eye out for that email in the following weeks. CLUB EVENTS: Clubs have always struggled to find ways to collaborate with each other. We will enact a clubs day at the beginning of each year where each club may send a delegate to meet other clubs and communicate ideas. This will allow clubs to collaborate between each other easily and pool together resources on common events easier. FOR STUDENTS: FREE FOOD: This will happen more often as getting nutrition is key for students to achieve our best. This means keeping the free food fridge stocked in the UCSA and working with food companies to secure food sponsorships. PAID FOOD: The UCSA owns a majority of the leases on campus for the cafes and restaurants, so we have looked into introducing better alternatives that interest price conscious as well as health conscious students. This means subsiding the price of foods that keep you filled up and ensuring that yummy options for those who want a nice meal on campus are available. This will take time, but we are confident that we can provide better quality food at a lower price by targeting the supply chains as well as the leasing agreements. STUDENT NIGHTS: The student night scene has been itching for a replacement to MONO (RIP). While it did its job well, we need a better form of Thursday student night entertainment. We will work closely with students to figure out a suitable offering. We will also continue to strengthen the current events (quiz nights, themed DJ sets, etc) as they already work very well and are well received by students. So who am I? Well I’m Luc of course. Luke with a C. But what do I do, and why should you vote for me? I study Economics and Operations Management (yikes), so I’m very good at all the nitty gritty business stuff that needs focusing on. But just because I’m in commerce, doesn't mean I have the social skills of a brick. I’m very socially driven and am a part of many different clubs. Being a student, I understand the struggles we go through and want to be our voice to be heard. The love over the past year has been surreal and I want to make great changes to our campus. I am of course here to listen and represent your voice in our community, so best of luck to all! Party hard and study well and I look forward to your vote! Much love Luc Withersea (Luke with a C)

XAvier Moir

TUMUAKI | PRESIDENT Kia ora koutou! My name is Xavier Moir (he/him) and I'm looking for your vote to be the next UCSA President. I'm running because I'm a strong believer in student voice and feel confident in the skills and experience I have under my belt to represent you. Having been on the UCSA this year as Engagement Officer and last year as Law Rep, I'm super familiar with what the position involves and how best to navigate the world of student advocacy. I'm passionate about equity and representation, and want to lead a team that is transparent, people focused, and driven to provide for you. Some things to know about me: I'm a local to Ōtautahi and in my 5th year studying a BA in Political Science. Before UCSA I was a UniLife leader for two years, and have also been involved with a few clubs and worked casually with events. I'm a devoted Swiftie, have a growing LEGO collection, and can often be found out and about playing Pokémon Go (it’s making a comeback). Here's some of the things I’d like to focus on, if elected: SUPPORTING OUR CLUBS: Clubs are the lifeblood of UC. Many of you, myself included, have made great memories and friendships because of our clubs’ scene. Ensuring these clubs are enabled to thrive is a key responsibility for the UCSA and UC. A main focus for me will be ensuring that adequate resources are available to support clubs in their operations. This includes pushing for better storage options on campus, improvements to the booking systems, and stronger handover support. I will continue to take these issues seriously. MAKING HAERE-ROA OURS: Haere-Roa is our student building. I want to reimagine its social spaces to make them a go-to place to relax, take a break, and catch up with mates. I'd like to see the space grow some identity by keeping the space open late more regularly and adding more couches, booths, charging stations, maybe a dedicated board games collection, and more. Haere-Roa should be the social hub on campus. Let’s make it ours. EVENTS THAT YOU WANT: The events scene is changing and the UCSA must be responsive. With Mono coming to an end, there's an opportunity for more experimentation and change. While there's still definitely room for some good ol' DnB, putting on what you want to hear is important to keep events fresh. There's a lot to learn from the success of things like Dusk at the Foundry. I'd love to see a rebranded regular series of free events that focus on fostering a fun atmosphere. We want somewhere we can have a good time, have an adventure on a night out with mates, and maybe groove out to DJ Spinal. We could also have the occasional bigger name act come through for a cheap ticket price. MEANINGFUL ADVOCACY: The most important part of being President is being a voice for students. One of the main areas where this is especially needed going forward is with UC's approach to equity support, given the disestablishment of Te Waka Pākākano. I also must acknowledge that advocacy is a team sport, and involves uplifting and working collaboratively with people from across our diverse student body. The UCSA's relationship with Te Akatoki has made some amazing progress in the past few years, and I will continue to prioritise strengthening this relationship. I'd also like to work on improving accessibility of our campus and services. AND MORE... Those are some of my focuses going into next year, but part of the nature of the UCSA is being reactive and responsive to issues as they arise. I'm always keen on hearing what challenges are most important to you, and how the UCSA can step up more to help. Feel free to get in touch with me or come have a chat if you see me around. I would love to have your vote! Let's keep the UCSA working for you. linktr.ee/Xav4UCSA

TUMUAKI TUARUA PĀHEKOHEKO | VICE-PRESIDENT - ENGAGEMENT Hi, I’m Parthey and I’m running for the role of vice president of engagement of the student association. I’m a mathematics and statistics student with a passion for creating meaningful connections and fostering a sense of community among students. As vice president of engagement, I would be responsible for planning and organizing events and activities that promote student involvement, diversity, and well-being. I would also work closely with other student leaders, clubs, and organizations to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met. I have experience in leadership and event management, as well as skills in communication, collaboration, and creativity. I have been involved in various student initiatives, such as fundraising for various causes, beach cleanups. IF ELECTED, I WOULD FOCUS ON: • Haere-Roa to be accessible by students after hours • Getting us a pool table that doesn’t cost us 2 bucks a game • Increasing student participation and feedback in decision-making processes • Developing innovative and inclusive programs that cater to different interests and backgrounds • Enhancing the online presence and outreach of the student association • Building partnerships with external stakeholders and sponsors • Supporting the mental health and wellness of students I believe that engagement is the key to a vibrant and successful student experience. I want to make a positive difference in the lives of my fellow students and help them achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. I will actively seek partnerships with local organizations, charities, and businesses, providing students with opportunities to make a positive impact beyond campus. By organizing volunteering initiatives, fundraisers, and community outreach programs, we will forge lasting connections and cultivate a sense of civic responsibility among our student body. Together, we will make a difference and leave a profound legacy within our wider community. In conclusion, my fellow students, I stand before you today with passion, dedication, and readiness to champion the role of Vice President of Engagement. TUMUAKI TUARUA AKORANGA | VICE-PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE #Barbenheimer Hello UC, my name is Andrew ‘Wormy’ Wormald, I wish to tackle: • Clashes • Events • Parking • Reddit • Assessment Feedback I am a third-year Law and Arts student studying History and Politics running for Vice President – Academic and General Executive. Alongside me are my running mates Samantha Plows a candidate for General Executive, and Erin Spencer, a candidate for postgraduate representative, we have formed the #Barbenheimer campaign for the UCSA elections. The purpose of our campaign is to focus on current issues facing UC students in their academic or social lives. SUCH ISSUES WE WISH TO TACKLE INCLUDE: 1. Clashes! - A massive issue regards marked attendance, where your presence may count towards your course grade. In some cases, students have had to choose what is ‘most importance’. The practical aspect of both labs and tutorials is something that recordings, when there is one available, cannot replace. To amend this issue 2. A solution regarding an online resource or alternative means of ‘catch up’ sessions could be a solution. 3. Clashes! (Again) - Many students will notice that when you have a clash this will cause your timetable to only display one or none of the courses. This can cause you to either miss or forget about attending or watching. I for one have been guilty of this. 4. CLUB x UCSA Events – While the UCSA currently does an amazing job coordinating various kinds of events, I would like to advocate for more UCSA x Club collaborations. This could include, but is not limited to; LAN tournaments, Arts Expo, Cook Off, etc. I believe it is important for individuals from all backgrounds to be able to share their hobbies with their peers, and there is no better place to do so than at Uni! 5. Parking Ticket Leniency – If you are running late for an exam, I think it would be appropriate to give a degree of leniency if you don’t have the time to find an off-campus park. Would be determined on a case-by-case basis. Further description of this policy will be provided on our socials. 6. Official Reddit Page – After seeing the success of the University of Auckland’s page, I believe that we need one ourselves. It could be a great tool for not just students, but all involved in UC. More on our page… 7. More Individual Feedback on Assessments – Yes. A more detailed assessment will be added to our ‘Barbenheimer’ Facebook and ‘BarbenheimerUC’ Instagram pages. We encourage you to follow them to engage with the ultimate campaign. We hope to meet you during the campaign! Oh, and if you have any questions about plowing or our policies, please do email me on AWO69!

Caleb banks

TUMUAKI TUARUA AKORANGA | VICE-PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora e hoa! My name is Caleb Banks and I am running to be your UCSA Academic Vice President in 2024! I will be in my 5th year of study in Law, Psychology and Philosophy next year. In my spare time, I am passionate about music, sports and trying new things. I am from Queenstown, but have lived in Nelson, Darfield, Japan, and for the last 4 years, Christchurch. I am running for the Academic Vice President as I believe I will be a good voice for the students. The most prominent role of the Academic Vice President is to act as an advocate for the students amongst the University staff. I am not running for the UCSA based upon policy promises which might not get kept. However, I will always promise to act in the interests of the students who elect me in every decision I make. This means working to understand not just any issues themselves, but where the issues have come from. I have studied through a pandemic, worked 30 hours a week during my study, and dealt with my share of challenges during my time at university. But, I also recognise that there is a lot of experiences that I haven’t been through, am yet to have, or can’t have. If elected, I will work to ensure that the voice of every student is heard and understood. Our university has an amazing range of ethnicities, sexualities, religions, ages and abilities. I want the UCSA to build on the work they already do. The UCSA needs to ensure that as representatives of the student body, they hold the University accountable to catering to this diversity in a way that makes every student feel valued. This needs to happen for all students, regardless of who you are. Part of this will come from working to make sure that we have a good understanding of all parts of the student body. If elected, I will ensure that I work to learn about and have empathy for all of the kinds of people we represent. Another issue I hope to address is students lack of understanding of the UCSA. The UCSA has a huge amount of resources and does great things around the university. While it is important they understand the students, equally I hope to help increase the understanding the students have of their representatives roles on the UCSA, and the work they do. I hope that you will consider giving me your vote! It would be an honour to represent you as the Academic Vice President in 2024! Vote Caleb Banks for Academic Vice President.

Ethan Milne

TUMUAKI TUARUA AKORANGA | VICE-PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC I’m studying Computational Linguistics, also known as Natural Language Processing. This field uses mathematical methods to process linguistic data through computer systems. It includes technologies such as voice recognition, text analysis, and language models. The field emerged in the 1950s and has recently gained popularity since 2015. I’m studying to join the team of engineers who are pushing this field forward towards a stronger future for all. I want to improve my skills and become a well-rounded employee to build a strong future for myself and my loved ones. Being able to effectively communicate and turn words into actions is important in all fields. This opportunity would provide me with the skills I desire. As a representative, I would act as the voice for the people, understanding their concerns and communicating them to staff to achieve desirable outcomes. This would also acquaint me with a larger workload, giving me the chance to improve my mental capacity while maintaining a good outward presentation. I am excited to take on this challenge and make a positive impact. If elected, I would like to work on several issues. Firstly, I would like to address the “AI in the room” and ensure that it is being used responsibly and ethically. Secondly, I would like to review the lecture recording policy and make sure that it is fair and effective for all students and staff. Finally, I would like to improve study spaces by providing outdoor areas with Wi-Fi access. I have found studying by the river to be very fulfilling and would like to provide similar opportunities for other students. I’ve recently discovered a love for karaoke, which is something completely out of my comfort zone. I never thought of my voice as being suited for singing, but with encouragement from a good friend, I gave it a try at The Foundry. I also have a passion for stand-up comedy, though I haven’t been able to attend recently. It holds a special place in my heart. I enjoy physical activities and CUBJJ is a great place for me to learn and practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe and fun environment. When the weather isn’t cooperating, I like to play video games like X-COM and Baldur’s Gate. I also love playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends when we have the time. It’s a chance to let my imagination run wild and laughter is always abundant. You’ll often find me at music gigs because I love to dance to loud, rhythmic music. It fuels my soul!

Jenro fortich

TUMUAKI TUARUA AKORANGA | VICE-PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora! My name is Jenro Fortich, a Law and Commerce student. I am running to be your Vice-President (Academics) for 2024 along with Jharmane Catolico, running for Equity Rep. Here are the things that I care about! STREAMLINED ENHANCED INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME: Internships are becoming prerequisites for many firms. Internships equip us with the necessary skills and industry exposure required to prepare us for the rigour of the workforce. While UC does offer papers specifically on internships in our final years, we believe more can be done to provide access to those that seek internships in their early days of studies. We believe a holistic approach should be taken for students' learning, both academically and the realities of the workforce. With the Streamlined Enhanced Internship Programme, UC can take a proactive approach on assisting us to connect with potential firms seeking interns. And this is how it could work: 1. UC receives an invitation from a firm. 2. UC verifies the firm and ensures necessary steps to protect student’s welfare and safety. 3. UC uploads the firm's details into a portal. 4. We apply through the portal and arrange the necessary interviews with the firm. Through this programme, Internship applications are centralised and efficient for us. Who knows, they could offer you a full-time job. TUTORING PROGRAMME: If you struggle with certain concepts sometimes, like me, or find it difficult to comprehend ideas, and no amount of textbook, friends or youtube videos can remedy - you might just need a tutor who can relate. Similar to the Internship Programme, a portal can be created to help those (myself included) in dire need of illumination by our peer tutors - by connecting us with them. Should you need prolonged tutoring, you would be free to make arrangements with that tutor, but within the policy confines and protection of the programme. All things Exam! Following are the non-exhaustive list of priorities: Standardised pre-exam briefings and examination proceedings (e.g. being informed of detailed exam structure, marking schemes) Late night study sessions prior to exams (e.g. extended library hours, dedicated facilities opened to accommodate night owls) Extended cafe hours during exam seasons If you want to know more about our plans, check out what (my amazing running mate) Jharmane has to say. PS: I don’t always run but when I do it’s for VP (academic) :) If you’re keen for some chats email me at jaf163@uclive.ac.nz.

angeline Moneda MĀNGAI TĀURA | POSTGRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE

Kia ora! I'm Angeline Moneda, a masters student in Product Design, and I'm excited to run again for Postgraduate Representative. During my time at the university, I've built meaningful connections with various stakeholders, which will play a vital role in amplifying your voices and pushing for real improvements in our academic environment. Having personally experienced student hardships, I'm dedicated to advocating for a better experience, sparing others from enduring the same challenges. As your current Postgrad Rep, I've acquired valuable experience navigating the system. Re-electing me means entrusting someone who's already surmounted the learning curve of this role, translating into immediate and efficient action for a smooth transition and early implementation of initiatives. My initiatives are centred on your needs. I will continue advocating for dedicated postgraduate study spaces since many of us lack adequate study areas within our departments, especially with an increasing number of students on campus. Every student deserves a supportive and inspiring environment for academic pursuits, fostering collaboration and productivity while providing a place to socialize and connect with peers beyond one's department. Crucial issues like fair TA pay and other concerns demand attention to ensure a fulfilling and rewarding experience for all students. My dedication to seeking solutions remains relentless as I work closely with the university administration and faculty to bring about positive change. Embracing inclusivity, I'm eager to trial diverse events for postgraduates, celebrating our varied backgrounds, interests, and passions. This fosters a sense of unity and belonging within our community. Securing another term empowers me to focus on long-term goals and ensures early implementation of initiatives. With your support, I pledge to continue being a powerful advocate, driving positive change for postgraduate students at our university.

ERIN spencer

MĀNGAI TĀURA | POSTGRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI TAURITE ME TE ORANGA | EQUITY REPRESENTITIVE & MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Hey y'all, my name is Erin Spencer (she/her), I am running for Postgraduate Representative/Māngai Tāura with the Barbenheimer Team: Andrew Wormale (VP Academic) and Samantha Plows (General Exec). I am originally from California but moved to Aotearoa just over a year ago and embarked on a PhD journey under the Faculty of Health (regarding queer perspectives on outdoor recreation). I am passionate about helping students who find it difficult to advocate for themselves while navigating an often intimidating and complex academic system. In my first two semesters at UC I have taken on postgrad representative roles for the Faculty of Health Research Committee and UCSA Postgrad Advisory Committee. I also assisted in resurrecting the Postgrad Student Association or PGSA (club). My prior experience as a local government advisor/analyst and volunteer roles held in multiple nonprofit organizations will inform the following policy initiatives; foster transparency and inclusion for all UC postgrads, seek further insight into how master’s students can access comparable support systems to those offered to PhD candidates, and work toward offering additional postgrad events. These events would give us all more opportunities to network and get to know each other across disciplines. I also hope to include family friendly events for students (like me) who are parents.

When I am not studying, I enjoy reading current and past intersectional, feminist, and queer literature. I also like a good psychological thriller (often by UK authors). I try to get outside as often as possible, visiting the gardens or Sumner beach and browsing the new release section at bookstores. I really hope to get back into snowboarding when my toddler is old enough to join me.

sadiq ali jeddy MĀNGAI TĀWĀHI | INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE

ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Assalamalaikum and Kia ora, I am Sadiq Ali Jeddy, an international student in my 3rd year pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a major in linguistics. With great enthusiasm, I announce my candidacy for the positions of International Representative and General Executive. The life of an international student is a tapestry of diverse experiences - from embarking on road trips with friends to explore the beautiful landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand, to late Undercroft nights of overcoming anxiety and homesickness while striving to complete assignments on time. Beyond academics, my university journey has been enriched by active engagement in clubs. I have served as an executive member in previous years and am currently an executive in three clubs. I find joy in creating a sense of community through volunteering and serving as an ambassador for international students. Motivated by the remarkable work of our past International Representatives, I have been inspired to run for this position. The transition into a new country is an uncharted adventure, unveiling unique experiences. As UC international students arrive, I aim to create a warm welcome and lasting connections through personalized airport pick-up and a buddy system. Thriving university clubs with improved spaces. Empowering students to bring ideas to life, fostering vibrancy on campus. Furthermore, I am dedicated to advocating for diversity and inclusivity, starting with our campus food policy. I will work towards a more diverse menu that caters to the various palates of our multicultural student body, ensuring that everyone feels at home while nourishing their bodies and minds. Outside of my studies and two jobs, I cherish moments with friends, watching cat reels and Anime, baking, and obsessively playing a new sport for a short term (my last one was squash). My wee Subaru serves as the vessel for fun road trips with friends. I am grateful to be considered for this significant role and believe I have the right experiences, qualities, and passion to excel as an International Representative.

jharmane catolico MĀNGAI TAURITE ME TE ORANGA | EQUITY REPRESENTITIVE

ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora! My name is Jharmane Catolico, a 3rd-year Law and Political Science student. I am running to be your Equity Rep for 2024, along with Jenro Fortich, who is running for VP (Academics). I will spare you the details of my adventurous uni journey and go straight to the things that I care about. STUDENT WELL-BEING: As students who also have their fair share of struggles and breakdowns, we care so much about student’s mental well-being. We want to make sure that students are well looked after, especially during the crucial weeks of uni when students tend to be under a lot of stress and pressure. A resting space where students can pop in and have a quick break during study week and exam period is essential. The aim is to provide respite for students from the intensity of academic demands. We also feel that organising mental health talks/ workshops, especially about coping and dealing with stress and anxiety, are important to provide students with practical tools to manage their mental well-being. LIAISON BETWEEN COMMUNITIES ON CAMPUS AND UCSA: We want to be an ally for the diverse array of groups that enrich our campus. The goal we have in mind is to personally arrange discussion sessions with the different communities we have on campus, to understand your needs and concerns and be able to represent your voices and perspectives to the Executive Committee. If you want to know more about our plans for next year, go ahead and check out what (my amazing running mate) Jenro has to say. PS: Remember, I don’t always run but when I do it’s for equity :) If you’re keen for some chats email me at jca184@uclive.ac.nz.

MĀNGAI TAURITE ME TE ORANGA | EQUITY REPRESENTITIVE ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE

Kia ora koutou, Ko Claire ahau (she/her) The girl in yellow. As the 2023 UCSA exec Faculty of Arts rep I've learned heaps about UC and UCSA. I understand how systems work, where improvements can continue to be made, and have built relationships through which change has been achieved. I've brought the voice of students to the decision makers and lecturers to facilitate real change, e.g. staff-class rep pizza lunches (only the second faculty to do this!) to help students and lecturers break down barriers and understand each other, improved lecture recordings, etc. 100% meeting attendance/participation!I also currently serve on UCSA Equity and Wellbeing Committee. Through this I proposed that in the darker months there's free parking 15 minutes earlier (now from 4:45pm!!!) for safer walking after 5pm lectures. UC accepted this; something of a miracle! Also the UCSA rep on Arts Equity and Diversity Committee, we strive for improvements in fairness, representation, and wellbeing of the whole person for students and staff. A few of the things I support: Larger pool for clubs grants More study spaces Increased awareness of advocacy and welfare support

More equitable special considerations process across faculties Higher SAS funding, access Understanding between marginalised and non-marginalised groups to create a more equitable culture

Some projects I'm currently working on: More effective, diverse support for all learners, particularly priority learners Representation for 'mature' students and ākonga raising tamariki Me: Completed this the night before it was due, despite having weeks to do it, like any good uni student! Big fan of UCSA and UC, love representing students, passionately want to keep the momentum going! B.Com in economics and finance, third year Please consider voting for me for equity and general exec. Kia ora!

mel graham

MĀNGAI TAURITE ME TE ORANGA | EQUITY REPRESENTITIVE ALSO RUNNING FOR: MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora, I’m Mel; the one with the purple hair. I am currently in my second year of study at UC. By the end of this semester, I plan to have completed a Certificate in Youth & Community Leadership. For the next few years, I intend to study towards a BA, with a focus on Philosophy, English, and Health Education. I chose to run for the role of Equity Rep, because I am always reflecting on the experiences of myself and those around me. I identify as a member of the queer community. In the past year, I have also (finally) been diagnosed with ADHD, General Anxiety Disorder, and periodic Depression. These aspects of my identity shape the personal insights I would bring to the role of Equity Rep. In addition to these factors, the people I have met during my time at UC (namely through being a member of the UCSA Equity & Wellbeing Advisory Group, and working as an RA at a Hall of Residence,) have provided me with a wide understanding of the experiences that other students are facing within the UC community. If elected, I have two main principles for how I would conduct myself in this role. Primarily, I am committed to maintaining communication with students across the university, so I can remain informed on the current state of equity & wellbeing at UC. Following on from this, my approach when on the Student Exec would be to speak up as the person who has been initiating these discussions on campus, bringing my insights to the table. Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing in a brass band, singing in a barbershop chorus, playing board games, and collecting books that I’ll get around to reading at some point.

MĀNGAI PASIFIKA | PACIFIC REPRESENTATIVE As a dedicated and passionate Pasifika student at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, I am thrilled to be nominated for the position of the UCSA Pacific Representative. With a deep sense of pride in my Pacific heritage and a strong desire to advocate for the needs of my fellow Pacific students, I am eager to contribute my skills and vision to make a positive impact on the Pacific community at our university. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively engaged with various Pasifika-focused initiatives such as the Takere Scholarship Program, the Pasifika Advisory Group, and the Fijian Students Association. These opportunities have provided me with valuable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities faced by our community. Through these experiences, I have honed my leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, essential attributes for representing and supporting the diverse voices within our community. My commitment to diversity has fuelled my drive to create a more equitable environment on campus. As Pacific Rep, I envision fostering a strong sense of belonging for all Pasifika students, ensuring that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed. I aim to collaborate closely with the Tumuaki and other members of the Executive team to develop targeted initiatives that uplift and empower our community. My ultimate goal as Pasifika Rep is to create a more inclusive and vibrant campus community, where every Pasifika student feels empowered to thrive personally. Through collaboration, empathy, and a shared vision, we can celebrate and embrace the richness of our diverse cultures. In conclusion, I am wholeheartedly committed to serving as a dedicated representative of the Pacific community, leveraging my skills, and experiences to make a meaningful difference. I am super excited about the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of our university's Pacific community.

Cathleen wang MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Ni Hao and Kia Ora UC Lecturers, staff and of course Students. My name is Cathleen Wang; born and raised in New Zealand. I am a second-year student studying a Bachelor of Arts in Human Services and Youth & Community Leadership. My motivation for running for the General UCSA Executive Representative position is not only that this position represents the voice of youth, but also that it provides students with the opportunity to express their opinion on how we can make the University a more enjoyable and comfortable place. I want to be part of helping everyone to feel that they belong and can aim for success. One of the issues I would like to work on if elected for this role would be to spread awareness of the effects of exam stress on mental health. Additionally, I would like to work on providing a variety of food options through Foundry and other quick stops so students can have balanced meals. When I am not studying, I am wandering around (JK). But in all seriousness, I work at a Chinese Restaurant and Ilam Oscar, which I consider to be a dream job because I love working (playing) with the kids. My friends always say I live under a rock because I do not have time to socialise, but I love talking and making people laugh.

dallas mcilraith MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Hey, My name is Dallas Mcilraith. I am currently a 2nd year Bachelor of Sport Coaching student. I am running as a UCSA General Executive as I believe that I have the energy and passion to contribute to the voice of students and give health and sport coaching students a vocal point for ideas. As well as ways to make university more enjoyable and supportive to progress in their lives. I also believe that giving to others is a strength of mine and it is important to be social and engaging in helping others to make their experience at University enjoyable. One thing I would like to do if I were elected is to make a sport coaching society group that can engage in and socialise with each other in a sporting context. While also helping some students who enter a sport coaching degree with no friends, find a place to connect with others in a social context. Also being really passionate about sports. I believe that having a sportsoc is a good way to connect with others away from assignments. While doing something fun and practical with others in a social environment. dominic toomey MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE

Hey guys, my names Dom and im running to be one of your general execs for 2024! Im currently a 3rd year studying the new BA specialisation in International Affairs and minoring in International Business. Im running as it’s a big step outside of my comfort zone and is a great opportunity for me to help out at UC. The USCA put on a number of amazing events throughout the year and I look forward to the chance to be able to assist in the creation and running of these events. Last year I was on the general exec for BakeSoc so I am keen to show off some skill I learned while in that position for the club. Some aspects I hope to contribute around UC is: continuing to make the campus a safer and more inclusive place for all, Promoting and assisting clubs and their events through the support of the UCSA and making sure there is transparency between students and the UCSA. I love road trips with friends and keeping up with latest events particularly in politics (broad spectrum I know). I hope to see you all as your new general exec in 2024 as im Exectly the Exec for you! Thanks!

samantha plows MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora! I am asking you to Get Plowed! I am Samantha Plows (she/her), and I am running for General Executive/Māngai Whakahaere, alongside the Barbenheimer Team: Andrew Wormald and Erin Spencer! I am a 4th-year student undertaking a double degree: Science majoring in Biology and Law. Did you know that since 2020, there hasn't been a Science student in the Science Representative role? It's time to change that and have someone who understands how the system works from the inside. With my background in both Science and Law, I am well-equipped to advocate for policies that benefit students and address their unique challenges and stresses. When I’m not studying you can find me actively involved in senior level positions in clubs, coaching sports for my local high school, or playing video games with my mates. As your representative, I will focus on important policies to improve your university experience: - Clarity on ChatGPT usage - Equitable access to N95 masks in Labs - Advocating for a safer campus - Addressing marked attendance and course clashes - Adding V plate onto UCGO If you have any questions, or are just keen for a chat, flick me a message, ' or look out on campus for the Cowboy Barbie! Together Lets Get Plowed and Vote Plows!

silas zhang MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia ora, I’m Silas and I’d like to represent you on the UCSA General Exec. I’m a second-year law and arts student active in the UC community as a member of several clubs and as a UC mentor. I’m running for general exec because I’m passionate about community engagement and making sure the voices of students are heard at the decision-making table. I bring my experience of sitting on governance boards and working with youth advocacy groups. Issues that are important to me include sustainability, student welfare, and the cost of living. I’ve learnt first-hand from my work as a UC mentor and participating in the first year reach out programme the difference that wrap-around support can make to the university experience. Uni is hard, I want to ensure that our welfare systems are serving students. With recent cuts to staff and courses at universities across New Zealand, I will ensure that the voice of students remains strong at a local and national level. Cuts are not the answer at a time when higher education is at the forefront of debate and discussion in an increasingly complex world. I will be an active voice for the needs of students, representing your voice. Vote for a strong and active voice on the UCSA general exec. Vote Silas.

stella meikle MĀNGAI WHAKAHAERE | GENERAL EXECUTIVE Kia Ora e Hoa Ma! My name is Stella (she/her) and I’m running for general executive this election season. I’m two years into a Bachelor of Environmental Science, and 19 into whatever this being alive thing is. When I’m not knee deep in revision notes, you can find me gaming, concerning all the people around me with my wealth of anthrax related facts, or slamming a Tim Tam in my seventh cup of tea that day. Equity will be at the forefront of all the decisions I make. As a rainbow, ND woman I have seen firsthand the barriers people can face while trying to achieve in higher education, and I know that the UCSA can be instrumental in helping to alleviate the struggles of the campus’s underserved groups. Those of you who read UC’s equity benchmark report last year will know that while progress is being made, undoubtedly more can be done. As a general exec I’ll be assigned a subject to represent, where I hope to work alongside our underserved group reps, our advisory groups, Te Akatoki, and other institutions to help implement the reports suggestions and create a more equitable experience for students in that subject and beyond. As a former student representative of my high school and a current executive member of two clubs I like to think myself fairly electable. And unlike your landlord when you email them frantically about your carpet disintegrating, I won’t ghost you when you come to me with the issues you care about. I’m running alongside presidential candidate Luc Mackay, and I couldn’t be more excited to work alongside him and the rest of the UCSA executive team to improve the lives of every UC student this coming year!
