SDSU EOTY Banquet //Thien Doan As another year of great service comes to an end, Circle K has an End of the Year Banquet to reflect on all the events and experiences that the club has gone through. This year, I had the opportunity to spend my first “EOTY” Banquet at our neighboring club, San Diego State University’s Circle K. Though I am not part of their club, I was able to go to their Thursday General Body Meetings long enough to meet new friends over there. UCSD CKI was warmly welcomed into a lively atmosphere; everyone was waiting for yummy tacos and churros and for feelings to be exchanged and shared. There were even a few cool K-Pop dances hosted by some of the members there (I kind of squealed hearing the first song... Back by Infinite). Old board was retired; new board was instated. The president reflected on her club’s achievements in the past year. Many photos were taken (THANKS ALVIN) and lots of dancing here and there, including Gerald’s Zumba routine from STC. Overall, I had lots of fun with SDSU, as they have always welcomed me with open arms regardless of the club that I came from. Thank you SDSU CKI for having me and letting me experience your EOTY Banquet with you!

I remember my first SDSU GBM, I was honestly super nervous and scared because I only knew like 2 SDSU members at the time. However, by the end of the meeting I felt like they were all old friends who I was so happy to reconnect with again. I went a few times this quarter, and something strange kept happening....they kept forgetting to announce that we were there. At first I was a little salty that they forgot us, but then I realized something. They see us so much, and love hanging out with us so much that they see us as one of there general members. I do not think they forgot us on purpose, but they subconsciously knew that we were one of them and their new board does this in spades. They are so open and excited to talk to not only their new members, but ours as well. They are always super happy to see us and they make each time we visit more inspiring then the last. My favorite moment of this quarters SDSU adventures would have to be when Josh won a freaking chocolate cake and then started feeding random members his left overs of the cake. I mean seriously you expect to go as a favor to them but then they show you that we don't keep showing up as a sign of friendship, but because we want to go. Because they make each and everyone of us feel special by just being them. I always cry whenever my academic schedule overlaps with SDSU GBM, but I can tell you this. For my last two quarters at UCSD, I refuse to miss another moment with them. UCSDSU LOVE.

RESTORE // Edward To

UCSD Circle K is known for their weekly service events. Whether it is Feeding America or Reality Changers, there are always members who attend them. This week, UCSD Circle K had the opportunity to volunteer at a new service event called ReStore. This was the first time we all volunteered here and soon, this will be a weekly event that we offer. ReStore is a hardware store that is sponsored by Habitat for Humanity. It collects donations of doors, sinks, rugs, and more! Our jobs were to help out in whatever they needed us for, whether its hanging up rugs and labeling them with price tags or organizing their inventory. This was a very hands-on event which was nice and they appreciated our help immensely! Soon, we hopefully will be able to build furniture and more so if you are reading this, you should definitely come out and learn some skills!

How Many Circle K Members Does It Take to Hang a Rug? Restore was really fun. It is like a Goodwill for building materials and furniture and helps families in poverty. We do whatever the owners need us to do around the store. For our first time volunteering, we hung up the rugs that needed to be displayed to be sold. The owner said that as we start becoming more regular volunteers, we can start having our own projects, like building or repairing furniture or coordinating some of their weekend events. I think that it is definitely worth it.

This time we sorted through donations and put them on the shelves. There were so many light switches. Is it a common thing to break a light switch? Why were there so many light switches? Anyways Mike and Jeffrey measured and priced carpet. For everyone that doesn’t know, carpet is pretty heavy, trust me. It was fun overall and we got free popcorn again, so if you really like free popcorn, you should come to ReStore. We also went through TTACS for the first time and it was really convenient. They were on time picking us up going to and coming back from the event.

Rides to ReStore are made possible by our new friends on campus, TTACS. By using the app Dispatchur and filling out the waiver, you will be eligible for rides as well.

Reality Changers // Thien Doan In my opinion, Reality Changers is the place where, quite literally, realities change. Students from the area must sign up to get into this high demand, life-changing program, which gears them to be ready for college. Usually they come from a poor socioeconomic upbringing and are the first in their family to either finish high school or even think about obtaining a college degree. They are personally tutored by college students; not just with academics, but also with life. As a tutor of Reality Changers, you have the ability to make a change in these students’ lives as a whole. Due to the long-standing relationship with students, tutors usually settle on helping out on a specific day during the week and continue coming once a week. Students are also broken up into different groups, with names of different Ivy League universities, so that it is easier to have a closer bond with them. Tutors may not feel like they are doing much, by answering a few questions here and there and talking to the kids. But after continually going, you can really see the difference in their grades and their expressions on their faces when they see you back every week. Even one day of helping out could make a difference: the first student that I helped out with AP Calculus AB at Reality Changers told me a few months later when he saw me again (he usually goes to Reality Changers on a different day) said that I really helped him understand the subject and he did well on his exams for the topic we went over on that one day session. Even though you should not expect one, one of the nicest things to hear as a tutor is that you were able to really help them out and make a difference. I really think that really motivated me even more to come to Reality Changers and enrich these students’ lives.

Pure Breeds, Mutts, Goats? OH MY! This is the event that the members of Circle K have been waiting for over 3 years. I can confirm this, I was there haha. We went out to a beautiful park to cheer and help lead little puppies(and goats......no seriously someone brought 2 goats-Guess it wasnt limited to just paws) on their journey to be the very best in the most adorable Marathon OF ALL TIME. Personally, I loved this event for 3 key reasons. First of the three, I felt this event helped embody all three tenants in one. A service project about leading little ones while they help bring a smile to your face. It gave me a warm feeling in my heart and reminded me of when I was a part of my first leadership position in this organization. Second, PUPPIES SO MANY PUPPIES!!!! Not going to lie, but a lot of these puppies reminded me of my family (KNIGHT FURIES) because they looked just as cute and just as derpy. Finally, free pancakes....OH YEAH! During this whole event my favorite part had to be when my little, Cindy, and our VPS, Brad, made friends with a garbageman. They were so nice and opening to him that it made me proud to know them and call them Fam and Little haha. I also noticed at this event that there was a medical tent for dog walking. Then I realized it wasn't for the dogs and it wasn't for the owners. The medical tent was there for us, the volunteers, because we almost died of cuteness. May the puppy lords have mercy on our souls.

PUPPIES! PUPPIES EVERYWHERE! And dogs too. AND GOATS!! GOATS!!! I KNOW RIGHT??? Cue goat sound *baaaah*. Anyways, UCSD Circle K members had the opportunity to volunteer and be course marshals at the San Diego Humane Society's annual Paws in the Park, a fundraising walk where owners and their dogs all participated together! There were probably hundreds of dogs and puppies ranging from various sizes to breeds, and many of our members were squealing for joy after each dog passed by. Some of our members also got kissed by many dogs too! Although the event started off early in the morning, it was well worth because of all the energy that was present and the dogs there. I would definitely recommend going to this event if you are a dog lover or a service lover!

SD Humane Society x Cindy Sou It was the cutest volunteering event ever! We mainly washed cages and folded laundry but afterwards we got to hold kitties and they were the most adorable babies! My heart melted. It was perfect. Our volunteer coordinator also gave us a tour of the whole building, which was huge and mazelike. I would love to become a regular volunteer there because what is better than working with/for animals? Nothing.

Dream Festival //

Thien Doan

Dream Festival is a relatively new, free event, starting only a year ago, created from the need for self worth and love as students often become lost in the mist of studying and midterm season. The purpose of this festival is encourage students “to take a leap of faith with pursuing their passion, regardless with what fears that may come with it” with a variety of different performers and vendors. They help students open their minds to the possible futures out there for them and to be inspired by others around them. After finishing my volunteer shift to help out make stands for signs, plug in extension cords, set up booths and put up lights (sounds simple, but it’s quite a bit of work for larger scale events), I really got to see how Dream Festival worked. The event was split into two regions: concert stage and vendor booths. Students were encouraged to take stamp cards to explore each vendor booth and learn a little bit of what each had to say. There was also a really cool Photo booth bus! (Hopefully we can get that for M Ball or something) If you collected ten stickers from each booth, you could redeem it for food and free prizes! The concert stage housed many performers: Bad Boys Club (Gina hong), Bodyrock, Brotatoes (Hip Hop Dance), Daughters of Triton, MC Gill Sotu, Huj, Lawrence park, Rush Hour, The Beat, and The Filharmonic. Overall, I felt really inspired by each of the performances and learned quite a bit from each booth and I encourage others to volunteer at this event and then stick around after!

FEEDING AMERICA // Tuan Pham Feeding America takes food donations and redistributes them across San Diego. A lot of the food is fruit that is aesthetically off, but perfectly fine to eat. So for this week, we handled food processing; we went through oranges and made sure they were good enough to be redistributed. So mold and gashes are no bueno. It felt like I was a college admissions officer, deciding whether or not these oranges were "good enough." It's not too bad at first until you go through the first three crates and they seem to never end. Overall, it's a fun experience with other people and not too bad if you listen to music. Would recommend (:

RELAY FOR LIFE // Tuan Pham Relay For Life is a campaign held by the American Cancer Society with proceeds going towards cancer research. Prior to the event, members spent weeks trying to garner donations for the cause. The event itself consists of participating teams walking around a track for TWENTYFOUR hours, meanwhile side events are occurring. The most emotional part of Relay For Life is the Luminaria Ceremony, during which glowsticks and candlelights are lit to commemorate lives lost to cancer. The funniest part by far is the "Miss Relay Competition", a male pageant. Mike Mullen got revenge for two years ago by winning this time around :D My personal favorite part, however, had to be when I went to Wal-Mart to buy a tent for this specific event. Then I returned it. 7

The things I do for service. Waking up at 5:45 am and sleeping only a few hours before. My shoulders and back kind of ache. But, MAN was it worth it. At least to me and the other crazy people who would have the mindset that service is worth it. Okay, and the chili was worth it too, not going to lie. This week, UCSD Circle K went to volunteer at the Junior Olympics hosted by our local Kiwanis at La Jolla High School. After getting our free t-shirts, which showed our contribution to the event, we split up into two groups: one to manage the actual event, and the other to help manage the food. This time, I followed my stomach and followed the food. While the others were sweating in the hot sun, helping out with coordinating and managing the elementary students participating in the Olympics, there was a team of us ready to do what we must be done when there is a large gathering of families: feed this agglomeration. As the day went on, there were times when we struggled to meet the demand – for example, the idea of free refills for $1 of popcorn cleaned the popcorn machine of its contents. After rushing back and forth in the little tent that we had to house all the food and the food preparers, we managed to appease the crowd with our delicious hot dogs and chili and popcorn. Many stomachs were filled with our powers of service. On top of that, the great thing about working with food is that we were rewarded with that same food. At the end of the day, the greatest feeling was the sweat from all our hard work and the occasional thanks and compliments from the people we served. In our hearts, we knew that our service had improved the lives and stomachs of others.

Every year, La Jolla Kiwanis hosts a huge event called Junior Olympics where elementary school kids from all over La Jolla are invited to participate and compete in fun activities such as track races, softball throws, broad jump, obstacle courses and more! All of the kids who participated had a good time and got to exercise their competitive spirit against each other during these competitions. Also, the winners of these competitions earned medals and had a chance to be recognized in front of everyone! UCSD Circle K members had the opportunity to help run these events and make sure all the kids are where they are supposed to be. Although the event was early, long, and tiring (most of us got sunburned. WOOO!) Overall seeing the kids' happy faces and all of them enjoying their time made it definitely worth it in the end. Everyone who attended had fun in the end.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Just Keep Swimming Wednesday x Thien Doan This week on work out Wednesday, Mike hosted his workout at Canyonview Pool, where Larry and I swam laps and did different and various exercises in the water. Even though it was a little bit chilly out of the water, once you jumped in, swimming felt comfortable since it wasn't as cold in the water. Mike really caters a workout to whatever you want to focus on. You could ask him for help on your form for say freestyle (I only swim free~) or ask him for help on a flip-turn, something that I've never been able to do. After much struggling and water in my nose, I was able to sorta do it. With more practice, hopefully I'll be able to do it by the next swim day with club! After we called it a day, Larry and I hopped into the hot tub and let our aching muscles relax and our troubles of the day simmer away.
